The York County Sheriff's Office is eager to engage with communities across York County for National Night Out on August 6. The goal of the event is to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the residents they serve. Lieutenant David Godfrey and his deputies at the York County Sheriff's Department look forward to this event each year. “So, in York County this year, we are going to 11 different events throughout the county. Basically, local police departments, jurisdictions, they have their own individual national nights out and we get invited to the events. So that's how we are attending 11 events this evening, “said Lt. Godfrey. This event bridges the gap between local law enforcement, other agencies, and the community. It's an opportunity to earn local trust, while having a great time with the community. “Well, it's a good time, basically. It's a time for law enforcement to let loose a little bit. These events have turned into more of like a party type setting. Tons of them have. They have music, various entertainment, and bounce houses for kids. You have face painters. There are bikes that are given out to the community, TVs, free food, I mean, all kinds of things like that. We have all of our canines going to different events. So, it's your chance to meet the canines, interact with law enforcement, ask us any questions that you've always wanted to ask and just have a real, you know, 1 to 1 on a level playing field with each other, “said Lt. Godfrey. Lt. Godfrey has been with the York County Sheriff's Office for over 20 years. Since he's been involved, he's seen positive impact come out of National Night Out. “All the time, not just opening up the barriers with the public, but the impact that you, as a law enforcement officer has on a member of the public that it really is lasting. I've had so many people come up to me and talk to me that they met me and my K9 ten years ago, and they remember meeting him ten years ago that one time, and it left such an impact. So, things like that, they're just awesome to hear stories like that. And I think it's very vital, “said Lt. Godfrey. A special edition of the Crime Courts & Public Safety Update has exclusive ActionLine details on two recent incidents - one in the North End, the other on Pembina Hwy. - where violent criminals terrorized female victims, with one left homeless. 4:40 Part 2- If she hadn't delayed taking her sleeping pills - because she was on the phone with the cops for the second time Monday night about the tenants upstairs- Tamara Bard could have died. In an extended interview, she says a "very physical" domestic disturbance that ended in a fire joined a long list of trouble from other tenants of the College Ave. house she's lived in for 4 years. It's a story of a vulnerable tenant whose right to a safe home was ignored by a negligent property management company. To sponsor podcasts, or support our reporting via Interac: martygoldlive@gmail.com Despite the cops doing a wellness check after her first call to 911 Monday evening, the fighting flared up again around midnight. After she hung up from the second call, a neighbour alerted her to a fire raging on the first floor. A woman, her son and her boyfriend lived there. One was found dead and 2 are in hospital. The daughter of that woman, and a female roommate, lived in the top floor unit and were unharmed. Tamara has been disabled since 2012 and barely escaped from her basement suite with her dog- but her 4 cats perished. Her daughter set up a Go Fund Me and we are urging listeners to do what they can to assist Tamara. Click here- My mom lost her home & everything to a house fire 16.30- You'll be shocked by the revolving door of unstable 'Housing First' renters placed upstairs from Tamara by Ember Realty in the last 12 months. A mother with 2 teenage boys lived upstairs from Jan.-June. As Tamara describes, no matter how many complaints she made about fighting, screaming, and garbage, it took a naked missing teenage girl emerging from a bedroom window, and a mad dog biting Tamara and a cop, to get them turfed. And that's not all. 21:19 Part 3- After the missing girl was rescued and charges laid, it didn't take long for a new set of problems. A St. Boniface agency referred a woman and her cousin to rent the unit, which lasted until November. You'll hear about piles of garbage and dog crap, and vagrants pitching tents in the front yard. Tamara describes a scene straight out of 'Panic in Needle Park' with rigs sticking out of the arms of zombies. The next door neighbours had to build a fence to protect their young kids and pets. She says that Ember Realty didn't really evict the druggies, they just dumped them into a West End property. Can you believe it? She was almost flooded out by the arsonists who moved in after- and guess who referred them to the landlord? Getting paid direct deposit by welfare was easy, but managing the social disorder of 'Housing First' policies and protect an honest, disabled resident was too hard. When we interviewed her for Episode 6, the landlord still hadn't called to offer help. For Tamara Bard, a disabled tenant, it's become 'Housing Last'. She is sticking up for 'good people on a really quiet street until the problems in the house'. Tamara Bard has a message to City Hall and the province: "They say and do things that look good to the media... The system is very broken... it's not them that is suffering... they're safe, they're warm." "They don't know how the rest of us live and don't care to. It makes them uncomfortable... If I would have taken them (sleeping pills) at 10 and went to bed, I can't guarantee I would have been woken up." Support our work with a donation! 46:50 Part 4- Degenerate criminals doesn't only victimize residents. Family businesses are also under siege by the lawlessness roaming Winnipeg streets. She told Marty Gold it sounded like a car crashing into her restaurant. Then the owner of the Garwood Grill, closing up last Saturday, realized it was a goon trying to break in. What's it costing her to fix the front door? LOTS.

Emily Winston is the CEO and founder of Boichik Bagels. Born and raised in central New Jersey, she grew up eating a LOT of bagels. When her father had business take him to the Upper West Side, he would stop by Zabar's for lox, sable, whitefish, and chive cream cheese, then H&H for bagels, which her family would have as a special treat. These bagels were on a whole different level of unique deliciousness. In 2010 Emily moved to the Bay Area and bemoaned the lack of proper bagels. Emily was so distraught when she heard that her most beloved H&H Bagels on the Upper West Side had been shut down for tax fraud. And so Emily embarked on what became a five year quest, through trial and error, to create a bagel she longed to eat. Five years of experiments later Emily was happy with the results. Friends told her she should sell them! So Emily decided to give it a whirl, got a cottage food license and did pop-ups which were a huge hit. Then took the plunge to brick and mortar, and opened her first store on College Ave in Berkeley in November 2019. Now with locations in Palo Alto, Berkeley and more in the works, Emily had started to create the bagel empire of her dreams.Podcast was recorded on location at the Boichik Bagel Factory in Berkeley , CA https://boichikbagels.comShow Notes https://www.foodoriginspodcast.com/podcast-episode-39Support the show

#042 - Today we are talking to Matt Day, the owner and operator of Planter Day, a mission-driven plant shop located in Rockridge that is dedicated to destigmatizing mental health and promoting mental health resources. Matt decided to pick some weeds one day after visiting his mom in the hospital while she battled cancer. The pain and grief from her passing in October 2018 left Matt unable to work and get through his day-to-day duties. He found solace in gardening, however. He and his partner Yumi landscaped their yard and grew flowers and vegetables. Digging his hands into the soil proved therapeutic and he wanted to share that power of healing with others.“Our primary purpose is for the business is the use of horticultural therapy to help people heal because that's what plants have done for us - really help us heal through personal traumas through the pandemic.”Planter Day is located on College Ave in Rockridge. It is more than just a plant store. The shop serves as a community hub for meetings where independent vendors, artists, and chefs can share their products with the community during weekend pop-ups. They also host after hours events - comedy shows, workshops, poetry meetings, etc… They even had a movie and a Covered California commercial filmed there.Matt is driven by community over profit. He is well aware that he needs profit to keep the lights on and the doors open, but he wants to have a wider impact on the community. They are proud to be a mission driven organization. They donate a portion of all of their sales proceeds to the Oakland based Crisis Support Services of Alameda County. When I asked him about success, he said…..“Success is in the eye of the beholder. For us, money is not a metric of success. What is more meaningful is that we 1) can provide sustainable income for employees - we have 2 people on payroll right now 2) donate to charity - local charities that provide healing for our community - Yumi and I were both raised in the East Bay and 3) providing a platform for other small local businesses to sell their goods at to no cost to them - we like to open up our space and 4) have a wider impact on the community.” Be sure to listen to the whole interview to hear Matt's story about how help starts at home.
Matthew thought he made a real connection with Stella but she's disappeared on him. Let's get her on the phone to find out what's really going on here.

Read the transcript of this podcast: https://therealnews.com/starbucks-and-other-companies-escalate-war-on-unions-with-store-closuresThe union wave is hitting coffee chains big and small, but the bosses aren't going down without a fight. In June, after workers there voted overwhelmingly to unionize, Starbucks permanently closed the popular College Ave. location in Ithaca, New York, in a suspected act of retaliation, leaving workers in dire financial straits. Then, on July 11, Starbucks announced it would close 16 of its branches over alleged “safety concerns.” Workers and organizers have been quick to point out that two of the branches targeted for closure in Seattle also recently unionized, and they allege that Starbucks is breaching US labor laws. Meanwhile, in Louisville, Kentucky, local “progressive” coffee chain Heine Brothers' Coffee has come under fire for its own response to employees' efforts to unionize, including closing the Douglass Loop location, where some of the most vocal pro-union workers were employed. In an urgent panel discussion, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez speaks with worker-organizers from the closed Heine Brothers' store in Louisville and the closed College Ave. Starbucks in Ithaca: Gami Ray, a barista and worker-organizer with the Heine Brothers' Workers Union, and Bek, a shift supervisor and worker-organizer with Starbucks Workers United.Pre-Production/Studio/Post-Production: Cameron GranadinoHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews
In this urgent episode of Working People, we get an update on Starbucks' escalating retaliation against pro-union workers and Starbucks Workers United. As Rina Torchinsky writes for NPR, "Starbucks is closing a store in Ithaca, NY, in what Starbucks union organizers are calling an illegal move of retaliation after workers at the location voted to unionize. The coffee giant gave the employees at the College Ave. location near Cornell University a one-week notice of the closure, the union says, with the store slated to permanently close on June 10. The coffee giant has said the decision to close the store was unrelated to the unionization effort.” In this mini-cast, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez talks with Nadia Vitek, a partner at the College Ave. location and a worker-organizer with Starbucks Workers United, about the sudden decision to close the store and the mounting evidence that this is an illegal act of retaliation meant to send a chilling message to pro-union workers around the country. To read the transcript of this episode and read show notes, visit: Featured Music (all songs sourced from the Free Music Archive at freemusicarchive.org):Jules Taylor, "Working People Theme Song:Pre-Production/Studio: Maximillian AlvarezPost-Production: Jules TaylorHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews
We've adjusted our episode publishing schedule to bring y'all an urgent episode about Starbucks' escalating retaliation against pro-union workers and Starbucks Workers United. The coffee giant has said the decision to close the store was unrelated to the unionization effort. The store was one of three Starbucks locations in Ithaca that voted to unionize on April 8. Workers at the College Ave. location previously went on a one-day strike in April for what the union says were unsafe working conditions—'a waste emergency caused by the overflowing grease trap.' Starbucks later cited the grease trap as reason for shuttering the location, according to the union." In this mini-cast, we talk with Nadia Vitek, a partner at the College Ave. location and a worker-organizer with Starbucks Workers United, about the sudden decision to close the store and the mounting evidence that this is an illegal act of retaliation meant to send a chilling message to pro-union workers around the country.
