SynopsisOn today's date in 1927, a landmark film title The Jazz Singer received its premiere showing at the Warner Theater in New York. The Jazz Singer starred Al Jolson and is usually credited with being the first “talkie”—the first motion picture to successfully incorporate prerecorded music and spoken dialogue. Synopsis In Austrian culture there is a theatrical tradition that pokes fun at anything somber and serious. Mozart's opera “The Magic Flute” taps into this in the person of Papageno, and in the 19th century the Austrian actor Johann Nestroy deflated pomposity in his satirical plays, including one wicked sendup of Wagner's opera “Tannhauser.” In our own time, this tradition is alive and well – and even Mozart is not immune. How else do you explain a 1991 Austrian film titled: “Bring Me the Head of Amadeus!” – a work ostensibly released in honor of the 200th anniversary of the composer's death? That film's soundtrack was written by a musical jack-of-all-trades named H.K. Gruber, who was born in Vienna on today's date in 1943. Gruber has composed what might be called “normal” concertos and such but is best known for “abnormal” works, including a piece he describes as a “pandemonium” for voice and chamber ensemble titled “Frankenstein!” “Frankenstein!” is a musical setting of some very macabre poems by a fellow Austrian named H.C. Artmann. Oddly enough, its bizarre Viennese humor translates well with audiences worldwide. As Gruber puts it: “The poems evokes in each culture a unique set of metaphors and associations. In this episode, Amanda tells the folktale of Tannhauser, a 13th century knight and writer of erotic poetry. (This episode is steamy!). Though the story takes place in Germany, it was a variation of a tale common throughout Europe over a thousand year period while European culture was transitioning from animist paganism to Christianity. It tells the story of a mortal man seduced by an otherworldly woman, such as a fairy queen or goddess, who lures him to her Underworld paradise. This story asks us: where does abundance actually come from? Does it come from the land, physical pleasure, healthy food, enjoying loved ones, and contributing to our community in some way? Or does abundance come from working hard, getting a well paying job, saving money, and playing by "the rules"? When Spirit presents us with its gifts, what should we do with them? How can we cherish the abundance available to us and help it grow? On today’s date in 1927, a landmark film entitled “The Jazz Singer” received its premiere showing at the Warner Theater in New York. “The Jazz Singer” starred Al Jolson and is usually credited with being the first “talkie”—the first motion picture to successfully incorporate prerecorded music and spoken dialogue. Both the music and dialogue were recorded using the Vitaphone process, essentially a set of disc recordings synchronized for playback with the film’s projector. The previous year, the New York Philharmonic had participated in the first Vitaphone projects, recording Wagner’s “Tannhauser” overture as the first-ever “music video,” and performing the soundtrack for an otherwise silent drama entitled “Don Juan,” starring John Barrymore. Within a decade, Hollywood orchestras would be recording the classic film scores of European émigré composers like Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Max Steiner, and within two decades American composers like Aaron Copland and Bernard Herrmann would be writing their memorable film scores as well. But back in 1927, all of that was well in the future, and, as one of Al Jolson’s lines in “The Jazz Singer” so prophetically put it, “You ain’t heard nothin’ yet.”

The previous year, the New York Philharmonic had participated in the first Vitaphone projects, recording Wagner’s “Tannhauser” overture as the first-ever “music video,” and performing the soundtrack for an otherwise silent drama entitled “Don Juan,” starring John Barrymore. Within a decade, Hollywood orchestras would be recording the classic film scores of European émigré composers like Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Max Steiner, and within two decades American composers like Aaron Copland and Bernard Herrmann would be writing their memorable film scores as well. But back in 1927, all of that was well in the future, and, as one of Al Jolson’s lines in “The Jazz Singer” so prophetically put it, “You ain’t heard nothin’ yet.”
