In this episode of CLIPPED, Eric's breaking down the ten thousand hour rule and why so many agency owners, freelancers, and online coaches struggle to find success. If you're not seeing results, it might be because you haven't put in the reps—yet. This episode dives into what the 10,000-hour rule really means, how mastery requires time and effort, and why so many people try to skip the hard work. Eric also shares his own 10,000-hour journey—from running errands at recording studios to building a podcast production company. By the end of this episode, you'll understand why cutting corners leads to failure and what you need to do to actually get good at your craft. A Word From Our Sponsor: This podcast is sponsored by Riverside.fm—my favorite platform for recording high-quality remote podcasts and videos. Popularized by Malcolm Gladwell, this concept suggests that true mastery takes at least 10,000 hours of deliberate practice. Becoming great at something requires repetition, failure, and continuous learning. Professionals don't cut corners—they put in the work and develop real expertise. Why Are Agency Owners and Coaches Struggling? Lack of Real Skills: Many jump into business without actually mastering a craft. Selling Theory, Not Experience: Too many coaches sell courses or strategies they've never implemented themselves. Shortcut Mentality: AI tools and quick hacks can't replace the years of experience needed to develop true expertise. Eric's 10,000-Hour Journey in Audio Started interning at 17 Hertz Studios in North Hollywood—running errands, setting up mics, and learning the ropes. Worked at Paramount Recording Studios, recording, editing, and getting yelled at (a lot). Transitioned to podcasting in 2015, building The Podcast Haven from the ground up. Cold-emailed hundreds of podcasters, landed clients like Kimberly Snyder and Paychecks & Balances, and grew a sustainable business through years of hard work. How to Actually Get Good at Something Do the work before you sell the solution—learn by doing, not by theory. Master the tools of your industry—whether it's Pro Tools, Google Ads, or video editing software. Go through the struggle—get used to high-pressure situations, criticism, and iteration. Test, fail, refine, repeat—real mastery comes from constant improvement over time. Listen To Past Podcast Episodes: How To Record a Video Podcast On Your iPhone: Easily Podcast In 4K! Today's topic is the Ten Thousand Hour Principal! That is, the concept of doing something for ten thousand hours in a bid to master it brilliantly
The 10,000-hour rule was made famous by author Malcolm Gladwell in his best-selling book Outliers (2008). In it, Gladwell suggests that the key to becoming world-class at something is to spend 10,000 hours engaging in the activity. Unfortunately, it isn't true. The 10,000 hour rule gives the impression that any time spent engaging in a goal activity would lead to further improvement. However, Anders Ericsson, the Swedish psychologist responsible for the research on which the 10,000-hour rule was based suggests that to improve your skill at any goal activity, the method of practice is what matters, not the time spent. This episode covers those 3 methods of practice, proven effective in the growth and development of any new skill you are striving to achieve.CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL ARTICLE, BOOK LINKS, AND MORE:

Robert Alice, artist and creator of the ‘Portraits of a Mind’ project, shares his story on how bitcoin - and to quote Robert – “and its essential ties to the past instead of the perpetuated perception of its radical severance with it,“ was a catalyst for a melting pot of inspiration for his mesmerizing artwork Portraits of a Mind, the crossover from physical art into digital art with non-fungible tokens (NFTs), the intersection of artistry and entrepreneurship…and the joys of life as a triplet! MoneyNeverSleepsis sponsored by PAT Fintech, the training partner that demystifies fintech and digital finance for financial services professionals. Robert Alice founded his project in 2018 to promote blockchain culture within the visual arts. The completion of Portraits of a Mind spanned 3.5 years and resulted in a 40-painting work of art. Each of the 40 paintings is the size of a small but circular garage door and each represents one of the first 40 blocks of the bitcoin blockchain. ‘Block 21’ was recently auctioned at Christie’s and had a guide price of $12,000-15,000, but sold for $131,250 in October 2020. Each ‘block’ is as intricately crafted as a cuneiform tablet with the original source code of the relevant block carved into paint, with specific numbers on each block embossed in gold. When combined, the gold digits become global map coordinates tied to a location on Earth where a significant event occurred in the 5,000 year history leading up to the creation of bitcoin. Accompanying each painting is a non-fungible token (NFT) including a digital version of that piece of the artwork. The full story of Portraits of a Mind can be found on Robert Alice’s website. Joe-Brown’s informed opinion is that high school students must understand that this virus represents a tremendous roadblock on their unique pathway into their future life. They must continue their job of mastering as many skills as they can even in the current environment.
oe-Brown’s informed opinion is that young people consider the course work they do in school as they might consider the physical exercises they do: the physical exercises builds one’s body as the course work builds one’s mind and spirit.

Joe-Brown’s informed opinion is that high school aged young people need to give critical thought to the fact that someone takes care of them. They need to also consider that if they don’t master as many skills as they can, during this current skills development cycle, their ability to choose a pathway into their future life may be limited.
Joe-Brown’s informed opinion is that high school students need to be enabled to overcome the roadblocks that they run into as they follow their chosen pathway into their future. They must master critical thinking skills in order to successfully overcome these obstacles that would block their progress.
Joe-Brown’s informed opinion is that high school students are following unique pathways into their future that have been determined by their family and environment of origin. As they mature, students must begin to determine for themselves the direction in which their unique pathway will lead them.
Joe-Brown’s informed opinion is that high school students must begin to structure their time and effort in order to master the skill set that they need as they follow their chosen pathway into their future.
Joe-Brown’s informed opinion is that high school students need to focus on their future by following the pathways they have chosen for themselves. They can find support from their peers, once trust has been established. Students who read history will not only gain insight into the history of their ancestors but may also learn something about themselves.
Joe-Brown’s informed opinion is that most high school students endure a great deal of stress as they made the transition from their first 10,000 hour skills development cycle environment (family) to their second 10,000 hour skills development cycle environment (school).
Joe-Brown’s informed opinion is that high school students must understand where they fit in their environment. They need to be aware of the skill set they have already developed so that they might determine the skills they need to develop and master next.
Ten Thousand Hours-----------------------------By: Mike SpracklenTo be master of your vocation, be it artistic or physical or a combination of bothThe more time you give your endeavor, the stronger will be its growthWhatever may be your ambition in life, be it art on canvas or playing French hornOr a physical activity like rowing with more than 10,000 hoursTrue skill is bornKeep sculling movements simple and practice every day,It's the best advice an old coach can give, let nothing stand in your wayButRepetition can be boring , repeating the same movement over and over again, will challenge your concentration, good sculling technique will be hard to retainAnd the quality of training will deteriorate, if the body is permitted to avoid the loadThe value gained from staying focused, will be well worth the 10,000 hours You rowed
Joe-Brown’s informed opinion is that high school students should become aware of the skills they have developed during the multiple 10,000 hour, 6-year long skills development cycles they have experienced in their lives.
There is a well-known book that describes mastery of skills as needing ten thousand hours. The ideas put forth in the book have many arguments for and against, but that is for another time. In this episode, we look at ways for mastering skills in under the ten thousand hours mentioned in the Outliers book. This theory is critical for our daily exercises in getting better because we do want to reach mastery at some point. Complementary Skills We can assume that there is some amount of hours typically needed to master a skill. Likewise, many skills are related in ways that allow us to learn multiple skills in less time. The whole hours required are less than the sum of the parts. We refer to these related skills as complementary. For example, learning a third language (spoken or coding) does not take as much time as the first two). We can essentially skip ahead on some of the required time by leaning on previous topics. This benefit can come from identical tasks like the math skills needed in Chemistry were learned in prior Math courses or similar ones like the concept of language genders seen in many Romantic languages. Reduce The Time For Switching Gears There are many ways that complementary skills can work to our advantage. We can also shift more quickly to similar tasks. We can flip back and forth, writing Java and C# code or balancing our checkbook and our business ledgers. Compare this to the time to switch from working a crossword puzzle to doing Algebra problems or even writing business emails and personal chats on Facebook. Include The Pareto Principle I have more good news for you. We do not need to completely master most of the skills that we have in our quiver. We can move from comfortable or strong to mastery when a skill becomes one used daily. Foundational skills and concepts like object-oriented design, working with loops or collections, and boolean algebra require mastery to advance our career. Specific knowledge like memorizing syntax for a language or which C# collections are best for a task do not need to be mastered for most jobs. This approach is not a fake til you make it, think of it as an MVP approach to mastering skills. Episode Challenge: How long did it take to master your last skill? Apply that to your roadmap and mastering your next skill. Read more about advancing your career.
Welcome to the first mini-sode, where I feature a quick tip to help you reframe something you might be stuck with and inspire you to discover new possibilities. In this podcast episode, Dr. Finlayson-Fife speaks with Sherrae Phelps of Ten Thousand Hours of Writing Podcast about how to respect the differing views and beliefs of others as well as how to approach difficult or uncomfortable conversations about religious topics. To hear more from Sherrae Phelps, visit her at www.tenthousandhoursofwriting.com."It’s easy to be threatened by change and to want to call it evil. Our first instinct to something that is foreign or with something we don’t know is that it must be bad. It’s just in our DNA to do that. And I think it is really important to be very cautious to write something or someone off before we give it a thoughtful integrity based response. ”-Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-FifeWe are threatened by change and things that are different. We are threatened when someone disagrees with, diminishes, or challenges our view. It throws us off balance. It feels like a personal attack. And that fear can distort our ability to see the situation accurately. It can also, if we coddle it, limit our ability to respond with moral integrity and courage.Think of Fiddler on the Roof. How often were Tevye’s beliefs challenged? And not by outsiders, but by his daughters whom he loved and cared for deeply. He was constantly wading through the legitimate challenge of finding a way to love and embrace his daughters and his beliefs. If we’re not careful, the fear that arises when our beliefs are challenged can cause us to respond with emotional immaturity. That poor response can damage relationships and erode our character. But if we can ground ourselves and respond with moral integrity, then those moments can become pivotal milestones in our lives. To learn more about Dr. Finlayson-Fife’s work, visit our website, check out our course page, and take a look at our upcoming events. To learn more about Dr. Finlayson-Fife’s work, visit our website, check out our course page, and take a look at our upcoming events. To learn more about Dr. Finlayson-Fife’s work, visit our website, check out our course page, and take a look at our upcoming events.

In this podcast episode, Dr. Finlayson-Fife speaks with Sherrae Phelps of Ten Thousand Hours of Writing Podcast about the topic of thinking for ourselves. In this episode you will learn more about how to make your own decisions based on your integrity and moral compass rather than approval of others. To hear more from Sherrae Phelps, visit her at www.tenthousandhoursofwriting.com.“One of the things that interferes with our ability to think for ourselves is our need and desire for approval—our desire for other people to acknowledge or validate what we do. The more we depend on that, the more it will distract us from our own internal compass. You don’t want to cut out the voices of other people—-that would be immoderate in the other direction. But you don’t want the voices of other people to distract you from your own compass, because your own compass is an important source of knowledge and this is a gift to us.”–Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-FifeWithin many religions, the idea of being a disciple is encouraged and honored and viewed as a pathway for growth, wisdom, and for spiritual and emotional development. But when discipleship is misused it encourages dependency rather than independence and in turn, limits one’s growth and development and wisdom.Discipleship is about acting not about being acted upon.In this interview, Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife talks about what it means to be a disciple that thinks and acts for themselves.
Finlayson-Fife speaks with Sherrae Phelps of Ten Thousand Hours of Writing Podcast about the topic of submission. In this episode you will learn more about what submission means and how it can be driven either by fear or moral courage. To hear more from Sherrae Phelps, visit her at www.tenthousandhoursofwriting.com.“When submission is a virtue, it’s an active choice to yield to something because you think it will create the greater good. It’s not driven by fear; it’s driven by moral courage.”– Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-FifeSherrae Phelp’s Thoughts About This Episode:The word submission can accurately be used to describe weak behavior, but submission can also describe virtuous behavior.I’ll be honest; I don’t like the word submission. I don’t like the meanings that are typically associated with the word submission. When I picture someone submitting, I think of an act that weakens and makes one vulnerable. But I do think there can be submissive behaviors that are virtuous, and that type of submission is a little harder to identify and define because the negative meanings are so prevalent. In this interview with Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife, she explains what submission looks like as a virtue and what it looks like as a weakness.
Finlayson-Fife speaks with Sherrae Phelps of Ten Thousand Hours of Writing Podcast about the topic of indulgent suffering. In this episode you will learn more about how to act out of virtue and integrity and how to let go of immature thought patterns that can be harmful to personal development. To hear more from Sherrae Phelps and Ten Thousand Hours of Writing Podcast, visit her at www.tenthousandhoursofwriting.com.Often to determine if something is right or good or God’s will, we use pain, suffering, and sacrifice for a measuring stick. While I do not disagree that sometimes virtuous acts can be difficult and inconvenient, I think we are missing the mark when we use “pain and suffering” as a way to determine if something is right or wrong. It’s like we have this mental checklist. Is it inconvenient? Check. Is it the opposite of what I want? Check. Is it going to require sacrifice? Check. Is it going to cause suffering? Check. Is it going to be hard? Check. Conclusion: This must be good, right, and God’s will. But this is a flawed and limited way to discern to discern what is good and right. In this interview, Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife talks about this indulgent suffering that as Christians we sometimes value, and discuss the moral development required to act instead with virtue and integrity. To learn more about Dr. Finlayson-Fife’s work, visit our website, check out our course page, and take a look at our upcoming events.

I do believe I shared this video in the past – “Ten Thousand Hours.” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWEF5Ie89ug This episode will dig deep into how we tend to have this misconception on what it takes to create the life we want to live. Those looking in from the outside see what is sexy and fun, but they don’t see the dirty hard work and the struggle to overcome so much. There are so many mentors I’ve been fortunate to learn from that got me to overlook the results and focus on the daily practice of being better (thank you guys at http://www.t2bc.com/). “Make the world that put you here happy that it put you here.” - unknown

The Ten Thousand Hour Rule has become popularized through a book by Malcolm Gladwell. The idea is that if you spend enough time practicing your desired goal you will arrive. Perhaps there is a bit more to it than time spent.
