I'm not one of them really since most of the potential items aren't things I want or already have the last generation of, but we won't let that stop us from speculating about it later on. Who knows, if it really is something exciting maybe it'll make me regret recent purchases because what's life without huge amounts of regret? If you listen long enough, you'll find out there's a BIG difference between Father Tim and Father Brown on the BBC

Day 259 Today's Reading: Revelation 21 Kimutchi will always have a place in my heart. She was a prostitute from the streets of Detroit who I led to the Lord. It was one of our initial conversations that forever has marked me. She used to call me Father Tim. She came to our church one day and said, “Father Tim, can you pray for me? I'm having a tough week.” “Sure, Kimutchi,” I told her. But as I began to pray, she quickly interrupted me. “No. You can't pray. I have no money.” I was puzzled. “What do you mean you have no money?” She proceeded to tell me that certain pastors in town would charge her $25 a prayer and then would give her a Bible passage, which she'd use for playing the lottery numbers. It was a religious scam, much like the indulgences during the reformation, which Martin Luther railed against. I explained that what they had been doing was wrong. Then I took Kimutchi to Matthew 7:21, which says, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven.” Her eyes grew wide with amazement. “That's how you do it?” she said. “I never knew what that meant.” When Kimutchi said that, she did not mean the meaning of the verse. She meant the actual numbers on the top of the page. She did not know that “7” meant the chapter and “21” meant the verse. Then she told me over and over, “Give me one I can look up.” Then, “Give me another one.” We took a journey through the Scriptures together until she finally asked me, “Father Tim, if I give my life to Jesus, I won't have to be on the streets any longer? I won't have to sell myself any longer? And when I die, I won't have to cry every day like I do?” And that's when I took her to today's chapter—a chapter that came to mean everything to a prostitute. Here's Kimutchi's final passage that she looked up and saw the numbers 21 and 1 in Revelation: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” (Revelation 21:1-5) This is heaven. This is our reward. This is the climax of history. No more wars, no more pain, no more tears, no more funerals. No more cancer, no more taxes, no more racism, no more bills, no more rent, no more need for health insurance. Because God has made all things new. Once when the great Scottish preacher and writer, George MacDonald, was talking with his family, the conversation turned to heaven. At one point, one of his relatives said, “It seems too good to be true.” To whom MacDonald replied, “Nay, it is just so good it must be true!” It is just so good it must be true. That is heaven. That's the place I wanted Kimutchi to know existed. And what makes heaven amazing is that “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” God does that. It's said that an Eastern Orthodox monk said these profound words about heaven: “For most Christians heaven is envisaged as a kind of postscript, an appendix to a book of which life on earth constitutes the actual text. But the contrary is true. Our earthly life is merely the preface to the book. Life in heaven will be the text—a text without end.”

From start to finish, this episode is a testament to the strength of family support, the power of love and resilience, and the importance of maintaining a positive mindset, even in the face of adversity. As we finish our conversation, we shed light on lessons from his life— such as the power of personal ownership, the importance of doing hard things, and harnessing a positive mindset. His father, Mark, would always say, "Tim, It's up to you." So far, Tim has stepped up and followed his father's advice, which I hope every other dad chooses to do as well. Sacred Stories | I Have Seen the Face of God “So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them...” - Genesis 1:27a NRSV Faith community nurses are registered nurses whose work centers on a parish, church or community organization, rather than in a hospital or doctor's office. Literally meeting people where they are, these nurses focus on care of the spirit as well as holistic health and prevention of illness and injury. We have six faith community nursing programs throughout our ministry. Here is an example of how their work touches both the body and spirit of their patients – as well as themselves. One afternoon, I received a call from a coworker whom I'll call Father Tim. He was concerned about a gentleman he often saw in the neighborhood. All that Father Tim really knew about this man, whom I'll call “Gus,” was that he lived above one of the neighborhood bars, was in poor health and was a very nice man. “Gus is about my age,” said Father Tim, who was 72. “This morning, he said that if he'd had all of his medications last night, he would have taken them to end it all. Can you help him?” When I arrived at the bar, a tall, thin gentleman with a scruffy beard and slightly graying bushy hair met me. When I asked, “Gus?” he smiled. He confirmed that he was so depressed that he would have ended his life the night before except he didn't have the means. Gus was willing to go to the hospital. On the way, he told me that he was 57 years old, but he looked every bit of the 72 years Father Tim described — the result of years of drug and alcohol abuse. He also had heart disease. There was something special about this man that touched my heart and soul deeply; why, I did not yet know. When we arrived at the hospital, he refused to use a wheelchair. I had the feeling he was afraid that I would abandon him if I left to find a wheelchair. When we arrived at the Emergency Department triage desk, Gus said, “I can't stand anymore; I am going to fall.” Two women in the waiting room helped me hold him up while the receptionist got a wheelchair. The triage nurse checked his vital signs and took a brief history before whisking him to the critical care area of the ED. She then took me to see the ED social worker. The nurse said to the social worker, “You know it takes a lot for someone to tug at my heart, but this man surely does.” Later, as I sat in the waiting room, I reflected on my short time with Gus. What was it about him that filled me with a peace beyond my understanding? I thought of what the nurse said, and suddenly I knew— I had seen the face of God in this seemingly broken, yet very kind and gentle man. May he be blessed for the gift he is to others. Shared from the Sacred Stories Archive Questions for Reflection What is it about Gus and the people in our own lives who “fill us with a peace beyond our understanding?” Have you experienced people like that in your ministry? ORIGINALLY WRITTEN/RECORDED 03/2020. Hey guys. I'll tell you right up front, I struggled with the idea of even posting this story, because, yes, it's a plague story. It's a very common theme in sci-fi, the plague-that-wipes-out-humanity theme, but I've never written one, so it just kind of popped into my head a few weeks ago, before the poop really started to his the fan, as my subconscious had already started working overtime on this whole Coronavirus thing... Church leaders, how do you welcome technology into congregational life after the pandemic? Are you excited by all the new possibilities? Or does the word "virtual" within a mile of the word "worship" make you cringe? Wherever you're at on this, very, very few of us are not asking questions about "hybrid church." A couple weeks ago we set some framework with Dr. Sara Schumacher in a conversation about spiritual disciplines and the personal and communal development of Christlikeness and virtue as it relates to technology. Today we're going to get a different perspective from a rector who's been engaging technology for some time in pastoral care and evangelism, and especially social media and the internet, not only as a tool, but as a place for encounter. The Rev. Tim Schenck has been rector at St. John the Evangelist in Hingham, MA, since 2009. He's also served parishes in New York and Baltimore. In a former life he was a political campaign consultant, public affairs officer, and a paratrooper. Father Tim is the author of five books including, most recently, Holy Grounds: The Surprising Connection Between Coffee and Faith (Fortress Press). He is also the mind behind the online devotional Lent Madness. Should we embrace "hybrid church"? What the heck does that even mean? Today begins a two-part conversation on this topic. Give to TLC. Father Tim- 10/13/19
“The Things They Carried” brought National Book Award-winning author Tim O’Brien fame, and the unparalleled poetic beauty and honesty of his novels, short stories and memoirs have cemented his status as one of our most revered contemporary writers. Born and raised in southern Minnesota, Tim was a high school student body president who opposed the Vietnam War, and was drafted several weeks after graduation. He served in the area known as “Pinkville,” the location of two sites where American massacres of Vietnamese villagers occurred. “When my life collided with Vietnam, I realized not only that I wanted to write, but that I had to write,” Tim says of his tour of duty in the early ‘70s. “It was my way of relieving the pressure on my spirit and my dreams, and it became a live-saving thing.” Tim’s proposition that we all carry things with us — whether physical or in our memories — that affect how we move through the world informs his writing, from short story compilation “If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home,” to novels “Going After Cacciato,” “Northern Lights,” and “The Things We Carried.” Tim talks with “We Can Be” host Grant Oliphant about the joyous memory of his father that he still carries with him; the kinship he feels with Post-9/11 veterans; his work on the Pittsburgh-based hit television show “This is Us;” and the new collection of letters and prose he wrote for his young sons, “Dad’s Maybe Book.” “We need to be open to the ‘maybe-ness’ of our lives,” Tim says. “Open to learning, to leaning toward decency, beauty and humility.” Listen today at heinz.org/podcast, or on leading podcast sites including Stitcher, Podbean, GooglePlay, iTunes and Spotify. “We Can Be” is hosted by Heinz Endowments President Grant Oliphant, and produced by the Endowments and Treehouse Media. Show Notes All of us are looking to discover God’s will. We all need clarity in making decisions. This exciting conversation between Steve and Father Tim Corbley unpacks spiritual discernment. Discernment is the art of finding clarity. Through discernment, our goal is to “find God in all things.” Father Tim was Steve Smith’s spiritual guide for year-long journey Steve took in 2017 called, The Ignatian Exercises. This conversation is like listening to two seasoned souls talk of deep things. Four Movements of the Ignatian Exercises The first movement concentrates on how much we are loved by God, how he thinks of us as his beloved. The second movement is a realization of our sin. The Ignatian tradition defines sin, not as morality based but based on our ability to hear God. As we are more attuned to God, we hear his plan for us and are given discernment on the decisions we must make. The third movement is about how our desire to please God is the will of God; our surrender to Gods voice is freedom. Living open-handedly and knowing that God will open the way gently. The final movement is about Holy Indifference… the act of surrender. Holding your hands out and up without clinching and grabbing or holding on. Rev. Dr. Timothy L. Corbley I.V. Dei The Reverend Doctor Timothy Corbley was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood in May 1993 and is a co-founder of Heart of God Hermitage, a contemplative center of spirituality near Woodland Park Colorado. He brings with him a passion for helping others to grow more deeply in their spiritual lives. Fr. Timothy has ministered in a variety of settings. He has served the people of God as a pastor, hospital chaplain, teacher of pastoral care, retreat director, a preacher of parish missions, and is a trained spiritual director in the Ignatian tradition. Fr. Timothy’s current passion is providing spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and leadership to the faithful of Teller County Catholic Community. It is that time again when we dissect my newest Florida Today Article with one of my favorite editors and the author of Daddy Duty, Tim Walters. You can find the article online at FloridaToday.com on Tuesday, 6/12, and in print, on Thursday, 6/14. Tim and I will discuss “The Value of Fathers.”
A few weeks ago, when I introduced the idea of how we can decide what to write next, I proposed several ways a writer can approach that decision. One was to write whatever’s next in sequence. Write What’s Next in Sequence If you’re writing a novel, tackle the next chapter. Your short story will need the next scene. A poem grows with the next line leading to the next stanza. An article will expand with another paragraph or section. If you write DIY tutorials, you write in sequence to show the viewer or reader what to do next in order, one step after another. The sequential approach can be a logical way to decide within an existing project what to write next. In those cases, the answer is often right in front of us. What’s the Next Action? A simple way to keep those projects moving along is to ask the question “What's the next action?” Answer that, and you often realize right away you must simply write the next line, the next stanza, and so on. This question is an essential element in David Allen's Getting Things Done system, also known as GTD. When you think of a project you’re currently working on or one that you’re considering, try asking “What’s the next action?” Answer it with a statement that begins with a verb. Because we’re talking about writing, the statement will probably begin with “write”: Write chapter 17 Write the last stanza in the poem “Chase the Sun” Write the promo video script Write about the puke-y flight from Brussels for the travel article (yeah…I won’t on it elaborate here) “What’s the next action?” helps break down big projects into manageable actions so you know what to write next. Instead of scheduling a writing block on the calendar and labeling it “Blog post,” you can add the specific action, like, “Write the last two paragraphs for blog post.” With this approach, you know precisely what to write next. This focusing question works best when the projects offer obvious answers. Why Not Write a Series? But when you’ve closed out a project and you’re deciding what’s the next big undertaking, it’s not always so clear what to write next. You can still think in terms of sequences, though. In fact, you could even have some fun creating a sequence—how about a series? You could introduce a serial format to something you weren’t originally visualizing that way. It can hold your own creative interest as a writer as well as the interest of the busy, easily distracted reader. Writing and publishing short-form work in sequence—in a series—can work well for short attention spans while encouraging people to return for more. A series gives you a means to dive deeper into a topic, or explore it more widely in its applications, or look at it from many angles. Publishing novels in a series creates multiple entry points for readers who can dig in and read the entire collection. Series Ideas Want some ideas? Short Stories On your website, what if you release a series of short stories linked in some way? Maybe they’re all set in the same town or feature an ensemble of characters who alternate getting center stage from story to story. Novel Write and release a novel in serial form on your website. This should be a novel you didn’t intend to pitch to agents or publish traditionally; it would be something you just want to share with the world. You’ll be following in Charles Dickens’ footsteps, who his books in serial format in newspapers. Or, as I mentioned, you could write and publish novels in a series—anything from a detective series or sci-fi trilogy, to a realistic world peopled with characters like Father Tim in Jan Karon's Mitford series. Social Media A lot of ideas you might publish on a website could be serialized in even shorter format and pushed out via social media. You could do this with a story told in segments. Or you could implement a visual theme with applicable captions that link a series of updates all together.
