Did your college have a secret society? Well, Stanford has a secret off-campus class training the next generation of Silicon Valley billionaires. And it's literally called "How to Rule the World." Theo Baker arrived at Stanford as an aspiring coder with dreams of building the future. Instead, he stumbled into the "Stanford-within-Stanford" — a hidden pipeline connecting a select few students directly to Silicon Valley CEOs, yacht parties, and venture capitalists offering millions before you even have an idea. Then he decided to write a book about it. In How to Rule the World: An Education in Power at Stanford University, Theo traces his freshman year transformation from tech idealist to award-winning investigative journalist — including the reporting that brought down Stanford's own president. He joins us to talk power, secrecy, and what Silicon Valley is really teaching the next generation. Theo Baker arrived at Stanford University at the age of 17 wanting in. What he found, as he recounts in his new book "How to Rule the World: An Education in Power at Stanford University," was a machine: venture capitalists scouting freshmen, "pre-idea funding," yacht parties, and a secret elite — all riding on a culture of cutting corners that influenced everyone from his classmates to the university president.

This week on Sinica, I welcome back Evan Osnos of The New Yorker, whose marvelous new essay, “The Future, Made in China,” chronicles a tech-focused return trip to Beijing, where he lived from 2005 to 2013 — first for the Chicago Tribune, then as The New Yorker's China correspondent. Evan is the author of Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China, which won the National Book Award, as well as Wildland: The Making of America's Fury and The Haves and Have-Yachts.His essay is far more than another breathless account of China's advances in robotics and electric vehicles. It's a meditation on what China's technological ascent means for the United States, for how both societies are organized, and for the rest of us, whose futures increasingly seem to be wagered by two small circles of powerful men in Beijing and Washington. We talk about the Xiaomi Hyperfactory, “Chinamaxxing,” the export control debate, and the deeper contest Evan identifies: not democracy versus authoritarianism, but humanism versus scientism.3:04 – Walking Beijing's streets again: quieter, richer, more surveilled11:26 – The Xiaomi Hyperfactory: choreography, awe, and what's actually real18:10 – Doomed to coexist: Evan's message for the American reader24:15 – Schrödinger's China: joke or juggernaut?27:16 – The limits of knowability in an increasingly opaque system31:56 – Threat narratives vs. “Chinamaxxing”: America's two China conversations43:20 – “Thank Trump”: America's self-inflicted wounds47:29 – Revisiting the Sullivan doctrine and export controls53:10 – Mankind 2000: humanism, scientism, and rival oligarchies1:02:48 – Convergence: arriving at dystopia from opposite directions1:07:21 – Self-strengthening redux: Levenson and America's meum-verum gap1:17:53 – The other Sputnik moment: the backlash against tech oligarchyPaying It ForwardYi-Ling Liu, author of The Wall Dancers: Searching for Freedom and Connection on the Chinese Internet — Evan admires how her work grapples with the competition between scientism and humanism across national borders.Chang Che, who writes for The New Yorker and The Guardian — watching China's technological developments up close, “creating history in real time.”RecommendationsEvan: How to Rule the World: An Education in Power at Stanford University by Theo Baker — the youngest-ever Polk Award winner on how a rising generation at Silicon Valley's feeder school perceives its opportunities and obligations. Today on the show, the Iran war seems to be caught between sudden outbursts of fighting and fragile pauses for diplomacy. How are Iranians responding? Fareed asks Abdi Latif Dahir of The New York Times, who just spent 10 days in Iran after he was granted rare access to report on last month's funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Then, despite a June memorandum on hostilities, the US and Iran remain locked in a tit-for-tat conflict. Does Iran want a deal? Fareed speaks with Sanam Vakil, director of the Middle East and North Africa program at Chatham House. Later, Black fourth-graders in Mississippi now score higher in reading, on average, than those in Massachusetts. For a state with historically weak educational rankings, how did they make such remarkable progress? Fareed talks with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristof. Finally, when Theo Baker enrolled at Stanford University he was passionate about coding and excited to be in Silicon Valley. But over time, he grew troubled by what he saw as the influence of big tech over the university. He has written a new book about this and more, called “How to Rule the World: An Education in Power at Stanford University.” GUESTS: Abdi Latif Dahir (@Lattif); Sanam Vakil (@SanamVakil); Nicholas Kristof (@NickKristof); Theo Baker (@tab_delete) Learn more about your ad choices. Send us Fan MailAnother month, another list of books I don't want you to miss just because they didn't get to come on the pod!How to Rule the World by Theo Baker – or as I like to call it, how to make college more difficult than it needed to be. Baker tells the story of going to Stanford University where he expects to become another tech billionaire but somehow ends up on a collision course with the president of the university. Oops! Stolen Revolution by Yeganeh Torbati and Bozorgmehr Sharafedin This book follows a few people in the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution. It puts so much in perspective and is one of those books which feels like so much is jammed into the book, but it never gets overwhelming. They Stole a City by Lauren Collins – speaking of overwhelming, in 1898 the legitimately elected and appointed government of Wilmington, North Carolina was overthrown by a bunch of White supremacists who proceeded to terrorize the Black community. Everyone collectively shrugged like it was somehow okay for that to happen. Collins follows the lives of many affected through the generations. Kingdom of Devils by Katherine Grandjean – post- American Revolution serial killers! You probably never heard of the Harps (and neither had I), but in 1797 they went on a killing spree in the Kentucky and Tennessee countryside. This one was mind-blowing and proves there is still plenty of true crime left to discover. The Gospel According Hobby Lobby by Michael Blanding – I think we have all at least driven by a Hobby Lobby or two. However, the founding of the stores is more fascinating than I ever expected, and Blanding writes a book that is balanced but will also probably cause some tense conversations around the house. The Greens are not just founders of a billion dollar store chain, but also the money behind a national movement. Catherine the Great by Robert Massie – Massie was the master of Russian history as far as I am concerned, and Catherine the Great was one of my favorites. Love her or hate her, Catherine was powerful, intelligent, and unafraid to take a big swing. You know, like killing your spouse (allegedly!) for instance. Support the show

Tech shapes our world, and Stanford University is Silicon Valley's training ground. As a student reporter, Stanford undergraduate Theo Baker's work forced Stanford's president to resign. While just a freshman reporter at The Stanford Daily, Theo Baker reported on accusations about Stanford's president that culminated in his resignation. For his investigative reporting, he became the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious George Polk Award. Now, Baker comes to Commonwealth Club World Affairs to tell a story of money and power and excess for teenagers at Stanford—slush funds, shell companies, yacht parties. He arrived at Stanford impressed with the atmosphere—and the stratospheric level of academics. But he says he soon discovered a culture that embraced corner-cutting, access with few safeguards to catch bad behavior.  He concluded that Stanford was less a school than a business and a training ground for Silicon Valley's global businesses; the school had an annual budget nearly twice that of Harvard or Yale and higher than those of 116 nations. And Baker says the Stanford students deemed the next trillion-dollar startup founders were the prime product; for them there were secret societies, “pre-idea” funding offers, and social calls from billionaires, all with the expectation that these young people would soon join the ruling elite. At the top of this operation was Stanford's president, and Baker will share how he learned about and pursued the story that would bring down the president of such an elite institution amid allegations of research misconduct. First up on the podcast, Senior International Correspondent Richard Stone joins host Sarah Crespi to discuss the surprising commonalities between our immune systems and the tools bacteria use to defend themselves against viruses. These unexpected parallels have become rich ground for researchers investigating new molecular biology tools and model systems for immune research. Next on the show, Dominic Rohner, a professor of economics at the Geneva Graduate Institute and University of Lausanne, talks about the impact of cuts in international aid on violent conflict in Africa. His team harnessed the natural experiment of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) work stoppage ordered by the Trump administration in early 2025 to find links between the sudden withdrawal of high levels of aid to increases in conflict. See also Science's 2025 news series on the impact of USAID cuts on children. Finally, Valerie Thompson, Science's books and media editor, interviews undergraduate student and author Theo Baker. Baker wrote the book How to Rule the World: An Education in Power at Stanford University, which covers the heavy involvement of Silicon Valley investors in Stanford University and his investigation of research misconduct by former Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne.
