Send us a textOn the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are wishing we were Nicolas Cage and best friends with Pedro Pascal. We watched the 2022 film from Tom Gormican, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.I'm putting it out there right now: Nic Cage is one of our finest actors. Not only is he a freaking Oscar winner, but he also does weird meta movies like this one. Doesn't he seem like the craziest hang imaginable? There may have been some tough years in his past. Who among us doesn't occasionally have some money troubles and have to accept work we'd rather not do? But should we get on his case for stuff like Bangkok Dangerous and Drive Angry? For every one of those films, there's a Moonstruck, a Leaving Las Vegas, a The Rock. He's the best, and he shows us why in this delightful film.(Recorded on September 18, 2024)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent - The Movie Database (TMDB)The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent trailer - YouTubeTom Gormican — The Movie Database (TMDB)Nicolas Cage — The Movie Database (TMDB)Pedro Pascal — The Movie Database (TMDB)Nicolas Cage: Real estate and tax problems - WikipediaThe Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Paddington (2014) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Paddington 2 (2017) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Guarding Tess (1994) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Vampire's Kiss (1988) — The Movie Database (TMDB)American Psycho (2000) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Batmobiles down the ages - Pocket-lintFollow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts!Sean's Letterboxd profile!Steven's Letterboxd profile! Our Buzzsprout site! Our Instagram profile!Support the show
As a post-holiday treat, Marvel Animation dropped its first look at Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, premiering in January. The short teaser trailer gives us a good look at the Hudson Thames-voiced Peter Parker and a glimpse of Norman Osborn, who is voiced by Colman Domingo. Other voice talent for the show features Hugh Dancy, Charlie Cox, and Vincent D'Onofrio. If you enjoyed diving back into the dark, broody, Gotham of Matt Reeves Batman universe during The Penguin, get ready to be disappointed. It was announced that The Batman II has been pushed from its 2026 release date to October 1, 2027. The film is set to begin production in the last half of 2025 and DC co-chief James Gunn cited Reeves working to perfect the script as some of the reason for delay. The October 2, 2026 date formerly held by The Batman II is being taken by a film coming from The Revenant director Alejandro González Iñárritu and Tom Cruise. The triumph of the sequel movies continues at the box office this holiday season with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 having a very successful opening before Christmas to a $62 million domestic debut and has now climbed to a worldwide total of $159.5 million. Though Disney's prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, fell short of opening projections, the holiday season has been kind to the film as it currently holds a $221.7 million global box office. Wicked and Moana 2 still hold the overall crowns at the box office and Matt Eggers' Nosferatu, which debuted on Christmas Day, is sitting quietly but solidly at $26 million domestically for three days. The first trailer for A24 dark comedy Death of a Unicorn has been released. The film, written and directed by Alex Scharfman in his directorial debut, stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, and hits theaters in the spring of 2025. Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra recently told the Los Angeles Times that Kraven the Hunter is “probably the worst launch we had” in the nearly eight years he's been at the studio, adding: “I still don't understand, because the film is not a bad film." Vinciquerra also blamed the press for the bombing of Madame Web. Paramount+ has renewed the Jeremy Renner-led series Mayor of Kingstown for a fourth season. Netflix has released the first trailer for The Electric State, a sci-fi thriller from the Russo Brothers that stars Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, and Millie Bobby Brown. The film will debut on March 14. Paramount is moving forward with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 to continue the video game adaptation film franchise. Currently, the film is targeting a Spring 2027 release. With an animated series already in development, Sony Animation and Netflix are looking to expand on building on their Ghostbusters universe as sources tell Deadline the two are teaming on a Ghostbusters animated film. Insiders add that the project is still in early development but that Kris Pearn is attached to direct. HBO has renewed Dune prequel series Dune: Prophecy for a second season. Sony has announced that the 28 Years Later sequel titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple directed by Nia Decosta will hit theaters on January 16, 2026. The movie is the second installment in Danny Boyle and Alex Garland‘s planned zombie apocalypse follow up trilogy. Jared Leto will officially play villain Skeletor in the upcoming live action Masters of the Universe from Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Evil Dead Rise filmmaker Lee Cronin is writing and directing a new take on The Mummy for New Line. Horror powerhouses Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, along with Cronin's banner Doppelgängers, are producing and the film is currently set for an April 17, 2026 release. Sony has announced that filmmaker Tom Gormican's reimagining of the 1997 snake-focused horror movie Anaconda will hit theaters on December 25, 2025. Paul Rudd and Jack Black star in the new feature from Columbia Pictures.
We're back with a film about filmmaking, spycraft and celebrity, starring the one and only Nicolas Cage. In the movie, Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself, down on his luck and struggling to connect with his teenage daughter, when a wealthy fan (who may or may not be a kidnapper and arms dealer) makes Cage an offer he can't refuse. Co-starring Pedro Pascal, this two-hander is equal parts bromance, action-comedy, and homage to Cage's lengthy career. And while director Tom Gormican's debut flopped at the box office despite positive reviews, it has become a meme-fueled cult hit in the two years since its release. Now we'll find out if we can withstand - or will we be squashed beneath? - The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent! Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is a 2024 American action comedy film directed by Mark Molloy and written by Will Beall, Tom Gormican, and Kevin Etten from a story by Beall. Serving as the fourth installment in the Beverly Hills Cop film series and a sequel to Beverly Hills Cop III (1994), Eddie Murphy (who also produces) reprises his role as Axel Foley, with Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot reprising their roles from previous films in the franchise, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylour Paige, and Kevin Bacon star in new roles. Axel Foley has returned to Beverly Hills after his daughter Jane's and his old partner Billy Rosewood's life is threatened. She and Axel team up with her ex-boyfriend Bobby Abbott and his old pals, John Taggart and Serge, to uncover a conspiracy. The film entered development in the mid-1990s, under Murphy's production company. Various directors and screenwriters were attached over the years, including the filmmaking duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, but the project had faced multiple issues and has undergone development hell. In April 2022, Molloy was hired to direct, with production beginning in California that August. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F was released on the streaming service Netflix on July 3, 2024.

E allora buon ascolto. In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT (2022). The film, written by Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, is directed by Tom Gormican. The story follows the actor, Nick Cage (Nicolas Cage) as he navigates the surreal world of being a Hollywood actor. His agent, Richard (NPH) convinces him to take a million dollar job to just show up at the birthday party of Javi Gutierrez (an absolutely fun and lovable Pedro Pascal), a millionaire and Cage superfan. Things start to go sideways when Cage is swept up in a CIA plot headed by Vivian (Tiffany Haddish) who's revealed that Javi is a ruthless monster and head of a crime organization. The film mixes comedy and action and is an absolute delight and a MUST WATCH. The film has a run time of 1 h 47 m, and is rated R. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. This episode of the pod is dedicated to Cleo, Reese and Stephanie with love.
Director Tom Gormican discusses his new film, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, with fellow director Scott Z. Burns in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation they speak about the letter that convinced Nicolas Cage to do the movie, directing the film from an Ipad in a hotel room, and the importance of music in a film with a constantly changing tone. The film stars Nicolas Cage as a fictionalized version of himself who is hired to attend the birthday of a superfan, who is actually a dangerous drug cartel kingpin. But when Cage is recruited by the CIA to help bring him down, he's forced to channel some of his most iconic on-screen characters. Please note: spoilers are included. Episode 304: The Crew's taking inventory of their Nicolas Cage props while watching Tom Gormican's The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. This meta comedy is a career celebration of Nicolas Cage, but it's Pedro Pascal who steals the show. Pedro's facial expressions are heartwarming and goofy fun. And director Tom Gormican sets the tone perfectly, it's even more impressive when you realize it's only his second feature film. If you wanna see Nick Cage playing Nick Cage in a meta-narrative that's unlike any other Nick Cage movie (even if you haven't seen every Nick Cage movie), this Nick Cage movie will surely make you go full Nick Cage mode. But all Nick Cage jokes aside, this episode of the FILM ETC. podcast has host Mike Webb giving his full thoughts on THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT, starring (who else, than) Nicolas Cage. THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT stars Nicolas Cage as himself in this meta-narrative where he is clearly looking for a new role in a film and is in financial ruin. He is then given an offer of $1 million to attend the birthday party of a wealthy yet dangerous superfan named Javi (Pedro Pascal) in his estate in Mallorca, off the coast of Spain. Things take a wildly unexpected turn when Cage is recruited by two CIA operatives (Tiffany Haddish and Ike Barinholtz) and forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones. The film also stars Sharon Horgan, Alessandra Mastronardi, Jacob Scipio, Lily Sheen, Paco Leon, and Neil Patrick Harris. Directed by Tom Gormican. It takes some guts to write a movie for a big star... about a big star... without asking them first. That's exactly what writer and director Tom Gormican did with his latest film, "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," which stars Nic Cage as Nic Cage, lured into a criminal underworld by a man who professes to be Nic's biggest fan. Gormican joins us to discuss and tell us how he managed to get Nic Cage on board. "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" is in theaters now.
The Filmlosophers and Intern Amy narrowly escape the twisted maze that is the ego of a nuanced actor to share their thoughts on 2022's The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. The Theatrical Trifecta peel back the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) performances of the super meta film from the mind of Tom Gormican. Will the film only fuel the rumors about the eccentricity of one Nicolas Cage? Or has Gormican opened a new way in how we should see film and its performers? Grab your scripts & your popcorn, & tune in to find out in this week's episode of The Filmlosophers!

Tom Gormican directs and Nicholas Cage stars as….Nicholas Cage, the famous Oscar-winning actor/former movie star who has spent much of the past decade acting prolifically in many smaller movies but still remains a household name. He's struggling to find exciting new work as an actor and decides to take up on the offer of wealthy olive oil tycoon from Spain who pays him $1 million to attend his birthday party on the coast of Spain as a special guest. The olive oil tycoon is Javi played by Pedro Pascal – he is literally THE biggest Nic Cage super-fan you are ever likely to meet and needless to say, the two of them become instant friends. Unfortunately, all might not be as it seems with regards to Javi and his business – the CIA suspects him of foul play and lead by Tiffany Haddish's operative, they need to recruit some one to infiltrate Javi's world to get to the bottom of things…..and yup, guess WHO they recruit to do so?
Host Brian Gary talks with screenwriters Tom Gormican (director) & Kevin Etten about how art imitates life in the meta Nicolas Cage action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

But enough about Adaptation. On to The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. And then we check out an epistemological discourse […]

"The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent," which is now playing in theaters from Lionsgate, is not only a showcase role for Nicolas Cage but also a tribute to the Academy Award-winning actor. Anyone who is a fan will be won over by the film's humor, action, and fearlessness with how much Nicolas Cage throws himself into playing an exaggerated version of himself alongside a hilarious Pedro Pascal. The duo's fantastic chemistry might win over even critics and skeptics. Director/Writer Tom Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten were kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with me about their newest film, how they managed to convince Nicolas Cage to come on board, what it was like working with Pedro Pascal, which movies would they program for a Nicolas Cage Film Festival and more! Director Tom Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten found themselves suddenly out of work when their sitcom “Ghosted” ended up on Fox's cancellation chopping block. Determined to work together again, the pair began brainstorming ideas for what they could possibly do next. Shortly thereafter, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” was born unto the world, thus granting us all a chance to revel in the career of Nicolas Cage together. The film follows a fictionalized version of Nicolas Cage (played by Nic Cage) who is in a bit of a slump in his career and at home when he receives a $1 million offer to attend a wealthy fan's (Pedro Pascal) birthday party. During a conversation on “The Discourse,” director Tom Gormican shared how the project started from just a small idea that made him smile. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is finally here, and we got a chance to see it a little early! We're keeping this episode almost entirely spoiler-free, so feel free to listen before you see it… and you SHOULD see it as soon as you can, because it's great! After literally years of worrying, our fears were put to rest as The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent turned out to be much more than a movie where Cage (and the creative team) lean into the meme-ification of his personality. It's a celebration of his career, his persona, and the people who love him (hey! it's us!). We share some of our favorite moments, reactions to the different actors cast in the film, and some of the most interesting things we learned from the in-person Q&A from writer and director Tom Gormican.
