The actor and writer join Nick and Angela to talk about the new series of The Responder. Martin Freeman is a man of many genres and he has mastered most of them in his 27 year career. We first fell in love with him as Tim in The Office in 2001; he gained cult status as Dr Watson in Sherlock in 2010; and then hit the big time as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit in 2012. Martin won a Bafta and an Emmy for Sherlock and last year scooped an International Emmy for his portrayal of Chris Carson in The Responder. Tony Schumacher spent 12 years as a policeman in Liverpool before a period of poor mental health forced him to take stock. While on the road to healing, Tony tried his hand at stand-up comedy and, encouraged by his wife, decided to pursue his dream of becoming an author. Tony has written three novels and penned his critically-acclaimed BBC drama with Martin Freeman in mind. Nick welcomes our guests with a negroni while Angela prepares the best bolognese by Martha Collison, a dish specially requested by Martin. The meal is paired with a Villa Antinori Rosso by the experts at Waitrose. Talk around the table kicks off with praise for Martin Freeman's Liverpudlian accent, we find out what makes Tony cry and Martin recalls the day he decided vegetarianism was no longer for him. Martin Freeman and Tony Schumacher — the star and creator respectively — join us this week to chat The Responder, which returns for its second series. Plus, we investigate some Tudor crimes with Shardlake and some cold war espionage with Spy/Master. None of which can prepare you for what Boyd's been watching this week, which not only sees a surprise sprint for the finish line with a show he'd been behind on, but a rather unexpected ‘factual' show, that dovetails with this week's listener question to see a podcast far more concerned about measurements than it has any right to be.
Rex and JP talk the improvement at FLO Racing, give race results, highlight Tony Schumacher's induction into the Motorsports HOF, and are blown away at PDRA's Pro Boost class! The legendary Greg Lair discusses his journey in TS and details his car with it's unusual set up.

On this fired up episode of the NHRA Insider host Brian Lohnes talks with Shawn Reed Racing crew chief Rob Wendland and JCM Top Fuel pilot Tony Schumacher about a multitude of behind the scenes topics in professional drag racing. Wendland talks about the massive undertaking of getting a new Top Fuel operation off the ground. From the literal nuts and bolts, to the work, how the labor is divided, how a new team functions together, and the expectations he has for the 2024 season. This is as insightful as it gets into the world of a crew chief overseeing a hue project being done over a short period of time. How does this all come together? Wendland spills the beans on every inch of it. Tony Schumacher, the eight time Top Fuel champion is the second guest on this show and the conversation ranges from the legacy his late father Don left in the sport, his feelings on the 2023 season at JCM Racing, the shock and surprise of a primary sponsor leaving unexpectedly, his feelings on the topic, becoming a driver coach for incoming FIA Top Fuel champion Ida Zetterstrom, and a ton more. This episode is on the gas! Listen up now!
Bobbi Pruski tells the story of her family's sesquicentennial farm in Dodge County. In 1873, the original farmstead was purchased. They raised dairy cattle, hogs, and chickens. Over the years the farm was passed down from father to son for many generations. The original barn is still on the farmstead today where Tony Schumacher now runs the operation. He milks about 50 cows in a stanchion barn and has begun bridging out to offer custom field work. One highlight of the farm ws being able to host the Dodge County dairy breakfast in 2016. This recognition means a lot to Bobbi and her siblings as their dad passed away from cancer and their mom passed away a few years ago as well. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode of the NHRA Insider podcast, Tony Pedregon and Todd Veney join host Brian Lohnes to talk about the major stories and trends coming out of the Chicago Rt 66 Nationals and to preview the weekend ahead at New England Dragway. The event this weekend is unique as it centers around Top Fuel and Nitro Funny car, with the Pro Modified class also a showcase during the event. The three touch on some really interesting topics like how talent is recognized and snatched up the ranks in drag racing, why smaller teams don't take more advantage of races like Epping where they'd get more attention and have a better shot to win, the effect of the Indy 500 weekend on racing across America, and the seemingly instant turn of performance for Tony Schumacher's car during testing post-Chicago. All this and a whole lot more on this week's Clam Chowder-powered NHRA Insider!

The social media app has been banned from all parliamentary phones. Adam and Chris are joined by the former conservative leader, Sir Iain Duncan Smith, who explains why he thinks TikTok should be banned on ministers' personal phones. He also gives his reaction to Boris Johnson's evidence to MPs on Partygate. Tony Schumacher, Screen Writer for the Bafta nominated TV police drama ‘The Responder', shares how the series was inspired by his own experiences as a police officer. And, has Chris Mason managed to complete his challenge from Anneka Rice? Listen to find out! On this episode of the NHRA Insider Podcast, Tony Schumacher and Bob Tasca III join host Brian Lohnes to talk about off-season moves, upcoming testing, and the reasons why both think they are in a position to succeed during the 2023 season. For Tony Schumacher, 2022 was not a return year that was arranged in a relatively hasty fashion. It's easy to hear in his words and tone that the Seattle winning team wasn't exactly firing on all eight cylinders all year long, nor were they in a luxurious position with their equipment. With the addition of Mike Neff and John Shafer as the leaders of the team, new crew members throughout, and a load of fresh parts, the SCAG Power Equipment top fuel dragster is ready to roll. The two also chat about the addition of Tim Wilkerson to the JCM team. A fun chat. Bob Tasca has grouped Aaron Brooks and Todd Okuhara together to lead his Motorcraft Ford Mustang team in 2023. He's also added new people to the crew and the team has some really lofty goals for the season. A strong running car in the summer, Tasca and crew need to pick up the pace in the Spring and Fall to really be championship contenders. This is a great show with lots of insider stories you'll only get here!
A rare three-guest show this week on the NHRA Insider. Tim Wilkerson, Justin Ashley, and Camrie Caruso are all guests talking about their plans, news, and prep for 2023. The show begins with host Brian Lohnes getting everyone up to speed on the latest NHRA news and info and rolls into a great conversation with Tim Wilkerson on his new partnership with Maynard Family Racing and SCAG teammate Tony Schumacher. This is truly a new chapter in his career, and he tells all. Justin Ashley talks about preparing for the season with testing, what Top Fuel will look like in 2023, and why his team is primed for another championship contenting run over the year. Finally, Camrie Caruso talks about being a part of KB Racing, how her whole outlook has changed with this move, how her job changes on the team, and why working in drag racing outside of the car has been great for her career. Lohnes and Caruso talk about her tough 2022 Countdown, what she learned, and how she'll approach it in 2023. A great show with three NHRA stars!

**This episode contains explicit language (swearing) and discussion of suicide throughout which some listeners may find distressing.** In this episode we'll hear from two events at Gravity and two different guests linked by their experiences of being on the frontline in responding to fellow humans in moments of crisis. Tony Schumacher grew up in Huyton in Liverpool, and was a police officer for over a decade before the pressure of the job caused his mental health to fray. He eventually left the force and began writing, which he credits with saving his life. After publishing several novels, Tony wrote a TV script drawing on his experiences in the police, which became ‘The Responder', a unique, uncompromising major drama series which aired on BBC1 in January 2022. Tony came to Gravity and discussed ‘The Responder' and his life and career with Greg Jenkins, Young Person's Mentor at The Reader. Chris Dowrick is a professor of primary medical care at the University of Liverpool and a practising GP. Chris is the author of the well-known book Beyond Depression, and, more recently, of Reading to Stay Alive: Tolstoy, Hopkins and the Dilemma of Existence. This book draws on case histories of Chris' patients, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, and poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins to speak powerfully about moments of crisis and desperation. Chris talked via video link at Gravity festival to Philip Davis, Emeritus Professor of English literature at the University of Liverpool. Tony Schumacher is ecstatic to be a full-time NHRA Top Fuel driver again after a few years of only being able to run here and there. Schumacher explains embracing the new challenge of being on a single-car team, working with a new crew chief, and building a team with new guys; how different it feels to be back; reacclimating to the sensation of speed; forgetting bad habits in his time away; how hard it was to be left without a ride; having the opportunity to add to 85 wins; seeing early potential from his team; being a part of building a team into contenders; if doubt crept in as years went by of whether he'd get another full-time ride; preparing for a big moment again; depth of the Top Fuel class; how the relationship with dad works; being a big guitar player and taking it everywhere; not trusting hotel pillows; growing his own peppers; still being ‘The Sarge' despite not driving the Army car.

This week on The Lonely Arts Club, Martin McQuillan is joined by author and screenwriter, Tony Schumacher, Tony, who grew up in Huyton, Liverpool, is the creator and writer of hit BBC drama, The Responder, starring Martin Freeman. The series took over our screens and had everyone talking earlier this year. Although admitting that learning was a huge challenge for him growing up, Tony always had ambitions of becoming a writer and although he often kept this aspiration to himself, the seed had been planted and it never left his mind. After a run of poorly suited jobs, Tony surprised even himself when he landed a position in the police force. Thinking that was his career, pension and retirement years mapped out for him, a turbulent few years later and a serendipitous meeting in a taxi meant that the writing dream was still not over.We hear of the ups, the downs and all the gritty bits that have brought Tony to where he is now. Please note that some listeners may find it hard to hear about certain incidents that Tony found particularly hard to deal with, which also affected his mental health.
In one of our favourite episodes, the critically-acclaimed writer Tony Schumacher talks honestly and hilariously of the thousand lives he’s lived. From growing up as an initially non-speaking, non-cute kid - “I looked like a Kinder egg with long arms” - to the decade of long nights he spent driving around Liverpool as a police first responder, Tony’s experiences are visceral, exciting, traumatic - but delivered with an easy, laid-back wit you’ll love. The former council tip worker and roofer - now creator of hit BBC show The Responder - talks long limbs, third nipples, and physical fights with men in their underwear. But also the absolute exhaustion so many on the frontline must eventually feel. TW: Tony’s work in the police left him pretty burned out, and at times he felt at his lowest. There’s talk of recurring suicidal ideation. If you ever feel even close, talk to someone. In the UK, the Samaritans are ready to talk, day or night. Call free on 116 123. In the US, it’s 1(800) 273-TALK. In Australia, 135 247. In NZ, it’s 0800 72 66 66. Or please google wherever you are, help’s a call away. Tony Schumacher and Austin Prock join host Brian Lohnes on this episode of the NHRA Insider podcast. The two returning top fuel standouts have a lot to say about the 2022 season to be, the way that their teams will attack pre-season testing in Phoenix, and what it means to be back as sponsored drivers who know they have a full season in front of them. The winningest driver in top fuel history is candid in his remarks about his expectations for 2022 and he is definitely motivated to show the world that his top fuel return is not simply for his own entertainment. Schumacher talks about what it will take to chase a championship, working with a new team and crew chief, and the singular focus DSR will have on his top fuel car, a potential benefit to him. Austin Prock had his career interrupted by Covid-19 and doubted at times that he would ever drive again. In this frank discussion, he talks about the downtimes, the work he put in as a crew member of the JFR operation, the meaningful nature of his return, and how he will make good on the promise we all saw out of him during his rookie season in 2019. In with the old brings two huge top fuel names back into the fore as the NHRA season looms closely on the calendar!

On Transforming Perceptions on Saturday 28th September 2019, Áine Ní Tighearnaigh and David Lovegrove are in conversation with Associate Professor Jeffrey Looi, ANU and Dr Tony Schumacher Jones, Churchill Fellow Award Winner 2013 on the topic - The Politics of Loneliness – Humane Aged Care: Robot or Human? Tony and Jeff discuss the politics around dealing with loneliness in our communities, especially as how loneliness affects older people who are living in aged care and new innovations to address their needs. But is their needs or the need to reduce or not make financial and emotional investment into humane care? Are robots and artificial intelligence the solutions to the challenges we face with an aging population? And, if so, how far do we want to take it? What do we gain and lose by taking it all the way to having robots running facilities? And, if we don’t want to take it all the way – that is, having robots run the entire facility, then why not? At what point do you say too much? To what extent will we allow the technological tail to wag the ethical dog? Transforming Perceptions bringing you news, updates and diverse views on social, emotional and mental well-being from the lived and living experience, community, multicultural, mainstream mental health sectors; and music from round the world.
On the 9th November 2019 on Transforming Perceptions Áine Ní Tighearnaigh and Rodney Stanton chatted with Associate Professor Jeffrey Looi and Churchill Fellow Dr Tony Schumacher Jones on the topic - When will Australia provide effective mental healthcare for the aged? In light of the impact of Covid-19 and the high number of infections and transmissions in aged care homes in Victoria and NSW we share this conversation with Jeff and Tony from the 9th November 2019, critiquing the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety’s Interim Report which had almost daily media coverage in late 2019. The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety’s Interim Report detailed how the aged care system "fails to meet the needs of its older, vulnerable, citizens ... does not deliver uniformly safe and quality care, is unkind and uncaring towards older people and, in too many instances, it neglects them". We discussed the recommendations in depth with Jeff and Tony providing a number critical comments and further recommendations on how aged care system and workforce could be improved. As Tony stated "if you want a 21st Century Aged Care Service you're going to have to pay for it. That's the reality isn't it. Your'e going to have to put money into it, not take money out it". Jeff and Tony are experts working in Dementia care and research. They have been regular guests on Transforming Perceptions for many years providing expert advice on support and care for people living Alzheimer's Disease and mental health issues. This discussion follows on from our last show in September 28th where we discussed The Politics of Loneliness – Humane Aged Care: Robot or Human? Transforming Perceptions bringing you news, views, updates and diverse perspectives from the lived and living experience, community, multicultural, mainstream mental health sectors; and music from round the world.
'The Tin Man and Does He Have a Heart and does it matter?' Ãine brings you an interview she recorded in December 2016. She speaks with Associate Professor Jeffrey Looi, Acting Head of the School of Psychiatry at the ANU and Dr Tony Schumacher Jones, winner of the 2013 Churchill Fellowship and independent behaviour consultant in dementia care. The topic of aged care and the aged care reform is one that is not adequately addressed in health policy. Jeff and Tony discuss the need for proper resourcing for the aged care sector; the possibility of technological changes in aged carer provision and the ethics of robots and artificial intelligence providing care in aged care units. Transforming Perceptions, bringing you mental health and well-being updates, news, views and diverse perspectives from the national, local and mainstream and multicultural sectors, and music from round the world
