Polar Bear Club was a post-hardcore/melodic punk band from upstate New York. They were active mostly from the mid-2000s to around 2015. Their sound was a mix of gruff, emotional vocals with melodic yet aggressive instrumentals. They released albums on Triple Crown Records, Bridge Nine Records and Rise Records. And toured with such bands as The Gaslight Anthem, Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong, Every Time I Die, The Bouncing Souls, Bad Religion, The Story So Far, Citizen, New Found Glory and Taking Back Sunday. Greg interviews Anthony and Chris from Long Island, NY's Overthrow on episode 169 of the Hardcore Archive Podcast. Overthrow were first active in the Long Island and NYHC scene in the mid-1990s and played shows throughout the northeast with bands like E-Town Concrete, Indecision, Kid Dynamite, Shutdown, and Madball. The guys in @overthrow_lihc were all friends before starting the band, and discovered hardcore together while they were in high school. We hear about their experience playing shows in the New York area and how the band came to be affiliated with Triple Crown Records. Anthony and Chris discuss the reunion shows over the past decade that ultimately lead to the band reforming and writing new music. The conversation shifts to discuss growing older while still maintaining connections to the hardcore music community, how hardcore has provided an outlet for grief over the loss of friends and family, and how hardcore influenced them as fathers. We hear about the new songs Overthrow has recently recorded, two of which can be found on the popular music streaming platforms, and the forthcoming record due out this fall. We wrap up the interview by hearing about a few of the shows Overthrow has coming up with @gridironhardcore and @e.townconcrete on August 9th and @extinctionad and @swornenemynyc on September 8th. Be sure to check out Overthrow's new songs "The Calling" and "Anywhere But Here" on all the major streaming platforms. For updates on the band follow @overthrow_lihc. After the '90s, skacore got a lot heavier. One of the reasons for this was Sussex, New Jersey band Folly, who took the heaviest elements of hardcore, metalcore and mixed it with ska. They also did so in a way that emphasized the genres similarities, as opposed to their differences. Though the band struggled to find a significant audience in the 2000s, they would find that years after they broke up, not only did they have an obvious impact on newer, younger bands, but they suddenly fit in with this scene in a way unlike when they were a heavy touring, active band. This week, we talk to Folly members Arben Colaku and Jon Tummillo. We discuss the band's history, their unique philosophy to songwriting and talk about what it's been like for them years after their initial breakup in 2008. We also talk about what a big influence Converge was on them, and conclude that, therefore, Converge played an important role on the development of ska!We also discuss Anthony Fantano name-dropping the group when he interviewed me, Folly signing to Triple Crown Records, local DIY shows at The Phone Booth, and how "Hey!" by The Suicide Machines was a life-changing song for the group. We talk about how they turned disastrous shows into fun adventures. We also break down some of their songs, and we talk about a time they ate so many meatballs before a show in Connecticut that they had to play with the meat sweats. Support the show
Welcome to an all-new Films for the Void, Bonus Episode #14! In this episode, Landon interviews Eric Egan - the vocalist for Cleveland-based alternative emo/rock band Heart Attack Man. The band made big waves with their 2019 LP Fake Blood, as well as their most recent EP Thoughtz & Prayerz, both available on Triple Crown Records. However, it's now 2022, and a lot has changed for the band, as they've recently gone independent for the first time since 2014 and the future's looking bright with two separate U.S. tours scheduled for this fall. You can catch the band in September opening for alternative hip-hop artist Blackbear, alongside State Champs, Waterparks, and Mod Sun on select dates, and then again supporting Tigers Jaw alongside Glitterer in October and November. Landon and Eric chat about Heart Attack Man, their new song "Loud and Clear," making the decision to go independent, and a travel experience so terrible you have to hear it for yourself - all on the latest episode of Films for the Void!TIME STAMPS00:00:16 Interview w/ Eric Egan00:49:39 Round Robin Movie Discussion

Orange Island was a rock band based out of the town Clinton, Massachusetts. They wrote and recorded several demos before being signed to the Boston-based record label Iodine Recordings in 2000. The Shape of Calling was Orange Island's debut album and shortly after its release, the band started touring the US with many well-known bands including Brand New, The Movielife, Breaking Pangaea, Kill Verona and others. They left Iodine and signed to Triple Crown Records and released a self-titled CD that was very well received by reviewers and the indie scene. This is part 1 of 2 since this is a very long interview. Today's episode features Amy and Daniel of Future Teens. Future Teens is a self-proclaimed “bummer pop” band hailing from Boston, Massachusetts. They have released two full lengths to date, 2017’s “Hard Feelings” through Take this to Heart Records, and 2019’s “Breakup Season” through Triple Crown Records. Their next release, the EP “Deliberately Alive” will be out March 12th through Take this to Heart Records. They talk about their origin as a band, the writing and recording process of their new EP, and life and music in the time of COVID. I was so grateful for their openness and honesty. Artist Bio: 2020 was poised to be Future Teens’ breakout year. After releasing their sophomore LP Breakup Season, cosplaying as Carly Rae Jepsen, and zeroing on the romantic longing of fans worldwide, the Boston quartet was rising. While such a hard stop was part of every band’s story in 2020, the momentum hadn’t left the group — guitarists/vocalists Amy Hoffman and Daniel Radin, drummer Colby Blauvelt, and bassist Maya Mortman — straying too far from their central heartline. Deliberately Alive, their blustery follow-up EP, is Future Teens at their most explosive and earnest, showcasing a band in between journal volumes. Fans of the band’s confessional tone will hear it ring throughout, regardless of the messenger. When Hoffman’s lead vocalist, you get “Guest Room,” a strutting emo-pop moment where there’s more than just the first of the month living rent-free in their head. Radin’s turn brings “Play Cool,” a vignette of gig life and the fallouts that can occur during a local opener’s set. Both deliver the classic Future Teens formula: open on a slice of East Coast life, sprinkle in some anxiety and self-facing critique, and let the band surge beneath. Winking one-liners characterize both Radin’s “Separated Anxiety,” which crackles the release to life, and Hoffman’s “Bizarre Affection,” featuring a starburst of an intro that disintegrates into another night alone. But as Future Teens knows, there’s an after implied in all of these uneasy, warped presents—make sure you stick around for Future Teens’ latest reimagining of a pop song. This time, it’s Cher’s “Believe.”

It’s time for a new season of the podcast! In this first episode back from the extended break, I sat down with Josh Cyr - who is the bassist from the band, The World is a Beautiful Place and I am No Longer Afraid to Die. We chilled out in the band’s tour van right before its sold out gig at the Great Scott in Boston - where Josh also played double duty playing bass for the opening act, Harmony Woods. Josh and I had a quick chat about his history in music, with TWIABP, and his perspectives on toxic and performative masculinity in the music scene. Essentially, our conversation can be boiled down to DON’T BE A DICK - which is fitting because one of the pieces of educational materials that our nonprofit provides goes by the same title. Alas, so thankful for Josh taking a moment out of his busy evening to chat with me.MUSIC NOTE:- This week you got to hear tunes from the new “Assorted Works” release from The World is a Beautiful Place and I am No Longer Afraid to Die. This 2xLP was recently issued by Triple Crown Records and it compiles a number of b-sides, songs from splits, and 7” releases into one massive collection of tunes from one of the most influential sources of music to hit the new wave of the emo scene for over a decade.- On this episode, you got to hear the tracks, “From the Crow’s Nest on Fire Street” and “Katamari Duquette.” You can check out the entire “Assorted Works” release through all of the streaming platforms! Also, snag a vinyl copy of the album as well!

Last week I got to sit down and talk with one of my favorite musical groups, Weatherbox. The band was started in 2004 by singer/songwriter Brian Warren in San Diego, CA. They recently reunited after going on hiatus in 2016. Their current lineup consists of some new and familiar faces. This podcast was recorded at Brooklyn Bazaar, a day after the band played a sold out show upstairs with Person L, Fire is Motion, and the Sal Show. I’ve seen them a couple times in my life and this was for sure the best set I’ve seen.I’ve been a pretty geeked-out fan for about 10 years (still remember buying “American Art” on interpunk) so I tried to ask as many questions as I could about the band’s history and ethos.Their last album “Flies in All Directions” was released on Triple Crown Records in 2014. They’re currently working on some new music and recently dropped some live session videos produced by Shane and Jake’s session project, Half Way Home Sessions.
Katy Weaver is a professional photographer who created a career for herself out of sheer drive and passion for photography. Katy is also one of Craig’s eldest friends from college at Oregon State - the two met at the college newspaper and wound up working together off and on for many years. So they’re pretty familiar and use this episode to catch up a bit while exploring how Katy went from taking photos of Craig’s metal band in college to taking them of hundreds of people and couples from literally all over the world.Katy is a prolific wedding photographer and provides a great deal of backstory and advice for doing great wedding photography, as well as what it looks like for her to give up the lens as she is currently planning her own wedding. The conversation also veers into some emotional spaces as Katy recently lost one of her best friends - but the memories, much like the photos, are what keep her going even through tragedy. This is one of the most heartfelt and loving conversations featured on this podcast and we hope that truly comes through. And if you want to check out more from Katy and to see her work, go to KatyWeaver.com or find her on Instagram!MUSIC NOTE:- This week you got to hear tunes from the ridiculous new Holy Fawn LP, “Death Spells,” which was released last year through Holy Roar Records and Deathwish Inc in the states. The album was officially re-issued by Triple Crown Records last week so you can expect a lot more greatness from the band!- Holy Fawn plays loud heavy pretty noises - their words - and it all creates atmospheres that envelope the listener into a world of unknown possibilities. The band allows its songs room to breathe and expand into massive soundscape that began as a mere murmur.- On this episode, you got to hear the tracks, “Arrows,” and “Drag Me Into the Woods,” which you can access digitally through the band’s bandcamp page or on Spotify and Apple Music. There is bound to be a new vinyl pressing, but you may need to be a little patient.THE CONNECTEDU NETWORK- This week, you got to learn about the ConnectEDU Network, of which this podcast is now a contributing member!- ConnectEDU Network connects the unique perspectives and expert insight of higher education through podcasting. Matthew Politoski started Animal Flag as a solo project many moons ago and over the years, it has become a band that is a force to be reckoned with. Politoski also comes from a pretty musical family, which is how he learned to make music - and now he works as a music educator, supporting kids and young adults of varying levels of knowledge learn how to be better musicians and ensembles/bands. We get into what he's learned along the way en route to finding out a number of fantastic musical connections - because the world is truly a tiny place. On April 13, Animal Flag releases its new album, "Void Ripper," through Flower Girl Records and Triple Crown Records - an album that allowed Politoski to explore a number of topics that helped him process existence, faith, and the intersections therein. "Void Ripper" is a stunning rock album that is as raw as it is beautiful and elegant. Make sure you check it out when it drops! Also, Matthew and I certainly got onto a number of tangents that were certainly related to the conversation - yet, one such tangent deserved it's own bonus episode, which you will hear this weekend! When you call the hotline, only the first six numbers of the phone number are used to route the call, and your complete phone number is never stored in our system. Most states do have laws that require local staff to contact authorities in certain situations, like if there is a child or vulnerable adult who is in danger.- Visit RAINN.org for more information!- And make sure you follow Jaclyn's project over at inbetweenspins.com - we just posted a new episode of the podcast element of the project, so give that a listen!- Follow In Between Spins on Twitter and Instagram to check out all of the goodies she's gonna share with the world! This weeks I chat with an incredible human being named, Cassie Wilson! Cassie is an accessibility activist and musical entrepreneur who runs the online music reviewing site, Sick Snaps, as well as the nonprofit, Half Access. We chat about music, Taco Bell, being from Oregon and the greater purpose of Cassie's work in the scene today. Half Access is a program that gives disabled music fans a voice in accessibility issues and ableism at concert venues through a database of music venues and its accessibility needs and issues, while also developing ways to help venues improve their practices. Having recently turned 19 (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!), she is already making a major name for herself as the recipient of a $10,000 grant from Hopeless Records and Sub City. She was flown to Cleveland to receive the award in front of thousands of people and musicians she admires at the Alternative Press Music Awards! EPISODE NOTES (for full links, visit CraigBidiman.com/edupunxpod): - A lot of bands get hyped in this episode, check out tunes from Grizzly, Speak Low If You Speak Love, From Indian Lakes, and Owel. - You can learn more about Cassie's nonprofit, Half Access, by visiting HalfAccess.org - make sure to check out the venue database and reach out so that you can help her chronicle music venue accessibility across the country and WORLD! - Dan Campbell from The Wonder Years presented Cassie with her APMA award - you can check out the video and article HERE! I just did and I really enjoyed it. - But currently Cassie is all about A Will Away, Tigers Jaw, and Paramore. - In fact, Cassie's top album this year so far is “After Laughter,” by Paramore. Cory Castro from Free Throw is our guest for episode 104! Free Throw just released their best work to date on Triple Crown Records, “Bear Your Mind,” and it's very worthy of your time to spend some time with it. Part of the new era of bands from the independent scene, Free Throw would have fit just as good in the 90s as they do now. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
Our guest for episode 103 is the amazing singer for Foxing and his new side project called Smidley. The self-titled album is one of my favorites of 2017. Conor was one of the most open book guests I've ever had on the podcast. A voice you need to hear and see live. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
Sorority Noise, wrote to me, the album of the year. It’s called “You're Not As _____ As You Think” and it’s out March 17th on Triple Crown Records. If you’re listening to this in future, it’s out now. In this episode, lead singer and guitarist Cameron Boucher and I go through the new album track by track, what he can’t sleep without and discuss a band’s place in today’s political climate. Finally we chat about what he’s dreaming about next. Photo of Cameron Boucher by Christopher Leaman, as seen on TheFader.comSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
Today we welcome Triple Crown Records owner Fred Feldman! We chat about his start in the music industry, the hardcore beginnings of the label, Brand New, how the label has survived all these years, Triple Crown’s recent signings and what’s in store in the future. I really enjoyed chatting with Fred excepttttttt when it deviated to ska, that was horrible. Love you Fred. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
For this episode we welcome Tanner Jones of You Blew It. You Blew It have been around since 2009 and released albums on Topshelf, Jade Tree and soon, Triple Crown Records will be releasing “Abendrot” on November 11th of this year. I’ve had a chance to listen to the full album it doesn’t sound like anything they’ve done and that’s a good thing. This is a giant leap for not only the band but the independent scene itself. One of my favorite bands from the scene and one you should take a second look at if you haven’t. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
Damian chats with Conor, Josh and Jon from FOXING on Conor's birthday in Denver, Colorado. The band is currently on tour in support of their newest full length, DEALER, out now on Triple Crown Records. The four of them hide from the impending snowstorm and have a deep, sometimes dark chat about DEALER, using music as therapy for the listeners and the musicians and embracing the love of fans. All of this and more in today's podcast!
We kickoff the month of record label profiles with one of the more interesting cases of success with Fred Feldman and his Triple Crown Records. We spend a lot of time discussing eclectic taste and how that reflected in the labels beginnings, working with hip-hop with his previous label and of course, Brand New. It's a really insightful conversation with a person who I have always admired and respected his work. Won't you join us? Joining me this week is Nick Thompson, frontman of pop-punk bands Hit The Lights and Thief Club. Known for a buoyant sound that incorporates elements of hardcore along with a tried-and-true pop-punk bite, Hit The Lights have been a scene staple since forming back in 2003 in Ohio. The group released two albums for Triple Crown Records – 2006's This Is A Stick Up ... Don't Make It A Murder and 2008's Skip School, Start Fights – before jumping to Razor & Tie for 2012's Invicta. Nick's Thief Club project finds the singer taking a more personal approach to his songwriting, penning songs about childhood nostalgia, familial loss, and more. I caught up with Nick to chat about Hit The Lights' musical evolution, some details on their upcoming fourth album, and just how he ended up at the home of Stone Temple Pilots bassist Rob DeLeo. If you like what you hear, be sure to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher or YouTube so you don’t miss a single episode of the stories behind your favorite songs.
