TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ MAXIME IKO Maxime Iko is a parisian and self made DJ and producer and part of the Bpitch crew in Berlin. Born in 1982, he was at first a passionate clubber, fascinated by music, hanging out in Paris clubs like Rex Club or Le Pulp. Passion for music soon became voracious and took over the rest. His music is influenced by his interest in cinematography, in gothic and gay culture. Pitched down vocals, atmospheric Synths, slapping claps & funked up basslines. Whatʼs most important to him in music is groove & sensuality. Maxime played with DJs like Ellen Allien, Miss Kittin, Vitalic, Oliver Huntemann, Gui Borrato, Marc Houle, Efdemin, John Talabot, Todd Terje, Marc Houle, Heartthrob, Troy Pierce and many many more. Ten years ago Minimal Techno was a very big thing. Around that time I really liked that shift to minimal a lot. It was a fresh sound within the Techno scene. Finally something was happening again. Today the fuzz around minimal is gone. And I don’t play Minimal tracks often anymore. So I thought it could be a good idea to dive into my old record collection and pick some of the best tracks from back than. And to my surprise I rediscovered so much great music. I had forgotten how hypnotizing and sexy Minimal Techno can be. So I present you a trip to the past, with only Minimal Techno. Tracklist 01. Gaiser - Ground 02. Louderbach - Grace (Anxiety) 03. Troy Pierce - 25 Bitches (Gaisers Too Many Bitches Makeover) 04. Format B - Mondo Time 05. 2020 Soundsystem - Psycho(Audiojack Remix) 06. Random Skills - Zocker 07. Hobo - Symptom 08. With an open mind, Magda will try her hand at whatever feels right - from tech collaborations, fashion and art, to producing high-quality Tequila - creating a truly unique, multifaceted expression of herself. Born in Poland and raised in Detroit, Magda has soaked up the various characteristics of her surroundings, learning to find beauty and potential in the most derelict and depressed of places. As a teenager partying in Detroit, it wasn't long until Magda was fully immersed in the city's underground scene. In 1998, she joined Minus and began touring the world as Richie Hawtin's opening DJ. She honed her skills under the Minus umbrella but since has forged her own path, including almost a decade spent running the popular label Items & Things together with Troy Pierce and Marc Houle. Magda's touring schedule is amongst the most high-profile and demanding around. She's proved herself as a consistent, adventurous and top-quality performer, with a knack for bringing tracks together in unexpected ways. As well as notable accolades such as a BBC 1 Essential Mix and playing at Timewarp's live streamed 20th anniversary, Magda has been behind some stand-out commercial mixes, such as the truly seminal 'She's A Dancing Machine' in 2006, her similarly intricate fabric 49 CD and most recently a two-disc mix compilation for Balance. Though solo Magda releases are relatively rare, there's no doubt her ability extends beyond the booth to the studio. In the fall of 2010, Magda revealed her debut on Minus, 'From The Fallen Page'. It combined her love for Italian horror composition, Detroit techno futurism and straight-forward dancefloor functionality into a quality body of work that still sounds fresh today. She has also remixed the likes of Plastikman and Depeche Mode. Collaboration has become a vital part of Magda's studio work. Most recently, she has worked with T.B. Arthur, releasing a 12” of hard-hitting, modular acid under the name Blotter Trax. The duo are preparing a live PA to be debuted in 2017, as well as a new EP made together with BMG from Ectomorph. Also grounded in the concept of collaboration is her new event series, PERM. It began with a string of successful events in Berlin over 2016, all exploring innovative visual and musical ideas, and soon will branch out to become a record label with the same ethos. Magda continues to explore new creative avenues, each of them executed with the stamp of quality she has come to represent. www.residentadvisor.net/dj/magda www.discogs.com/artist/Magda www.dj.beatport.com/magda www.twitter.com/magda_music
Redroom Sessions - An Electronic Music Podcast - Deep House, Techno, Chill, Disco
Soulspace (Bangalore, India) Soulspace distances himself with more exploratory tempos and an experimental beat-maker approach, of which cities like Los Angeles or London are particularly well known for, yet the electronica producer is worlds apart. Hailing from Bangalore, India he’s capable of shifting moods from downtempo electronica to a more dance-floor friendly approach of 4/4 summertime grooves with his signature melodic & soulful sounds. His stunning debut self-titled LP had garnered rave reviews & support from stalwarts such as Laurent Garnier, Claude Von Stroke, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Mark Farina, Robert Owens and Pablo Bolivar. His live sets are deep, emotive yet dance floor oriented, with his signature sound. It’s a journey in sound with no genre constraints. As a DJ he believes not just about mixing two records but rather in telling stories with his sets infused with subliminal messages that keeps you hooked onto every beat. Having shared the stage with artists like Soul Clap, DJ Koze, Troy Pierce, HVOB, Shigeto, Parra for Cuva, Palms Trax, Garden City Movement, he now co-runs a record label/artists collective known as Lowlit with Frame/ Frame. The aim of the label is to provide a platform for forward thinking and most talented Indian music producers. Tell us about your selection. How did these tracks have an impact on your later doings? A: I was a bit overwhelmed at first by the concept of this mix actually, there is so much amazing music that I wanted to include. The more I thought about it though it started to make sense to focus on my time in New York, before I started making music and before I moved to Berlin. I move to New York in January 1994 to attend photography school. When I moved there I went alone and didn’t know a single person in the city, seems kind of crazy now thinking about it but at the time it seemed totally rational. By March 94 I bought my first turntables/mixer and started buying a lot of records. NYC at the time had some great record stores and I lived within walking distance to some of the best ones. The music I was discovering from 1994 - 2002 really formed the foundation of my style and I still play most of these tracks on the mix to this day. There are a quite a few tracks that are “pre” 94 that I came across in shops, some gems that I might have heard on a mix tape or remember from some Chicago/Detroit party. “We Are Phuture” and “Heat It Up” where Chicago classics while “Lyot”, “Glob” and “The Groove” where Detroit bombs. I felt it was really important to include those as I didn’t really find them until I was in NYC. While I was selecting tracks for the mix I was having a hard time editing the selection down so I came up with a “test” for each track… “Does it give me chills”? This simple criteria made it really easy to cut my track listing down from more than sixty to the nineteen I used on the mix. I have listened to the mix a few times since finishing it and I feel like it’s a really accurate window into where I came from musically. There is a common thread of spooky weirdness that still runs through the music I make and play today. Looking back on this track list I feel really lucky to have been able to experience parties in Chicago and Detroit at such an influential moment in electronic music. The music I heard at those parties guided me through the record stores of New York and helped cultivate my sound. Q: You´ve been a producer and DJ for decades. How do you still find motivation and inspiration to keep things running? A: Not to over simplify it but I still think it’s fun making/playing music that people enjoy. Q: A statement in your biography says: “I like making and playing weird music for weird people”. So which weird Pierce-music can we expect soon and what´s coming up next on Items & Things? A: I have a few different projects in the works, one of my oldest friends from New York Jaesun Celebre and I have been working on stuff the last year… spooky techno, what a surprise! There are some older tracks from Marc Houle and I that are planned for Items & Things as well as a new collaboration between us. I also have a collection of “Lost Tracks” that I would like to release, music from the last years that never made it out of the studio but I really like so lets see how that goes.

Soren Aalberg (DEN) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 86 pt.2 Bio: As a baby Soren was found by two fishermen floating in a Ikea basket on the Nordic Sea. He was raised by Mr Aalberg and went off to study in Kopenhagen (where he still lives today). It was there that he ran into Thomas Angstrom. Thomas introduced Soren to the world of electronic music. Soon they decided to make music together which led to some great releases on fine labels such as Bedrock records, Mindtrip Music, Coincidence records,... By using home made synthesizers and lots of own sounds, they create an unique and remarkable sound. That sound has been loved by DJ's such as Richie Hawtin, Len Faki, Troy Pierce, Luciano, Paco Osuna,... Currently Soren and Thomas run a label called Girafe Sauvage. This label aimes to release quality music from various artists all over the world such as Minilogue, Rodriguez Jr., Dimitri Andreas, Bryan Zentz, Size and so on. What will the future bring for Soren? PMS11 | All I Want For Christmas Is Worldwide Anarchist Communism | Attentat When looking for a picture to use for my Photographic Memories Series submission this seemed the most appropriate for obvious reasons. It's almost Christmas; a time of year so easy to love and hate with equal passion. Easy to love because, it’s nice to spend time with friends and family, and easy to hate because, well, it’s Christmas. By the look on my face it appears I embraced distaste for the celebration of baby Jesus. This is insightful because I remember myself being a greedy little bastard at that age. I remember, once, my selfishness got the best of me, and I attempted to clandestinely open a gift while hiding behind a rocking chair in my parent’s living room, only to be caught by one of my siblings with a handful of brand new LEGO pieces in my sticky paws. I used to beg to open gifts before Christmas day, and sometimes my parents would give in, mostly because I wouldn't leave them alone until I got my way. When I found this photo it gave me hope I wasnäó»t always a greedy little tub of fat; a pushy whiner that pressured people until they gave in to his demands. If only I knew why I was wearing a look of disgust and disappointment? Is my grimace a sign of my future attitude towards Christmas and popular culture? An attitude containing heavy doses of cynicism and disgust aimed at the obsession capitalist society places on the accumulation of material goods? Maybe, it’s a look saying, I'm just freaked out by the fact I'm sitting on a creepy guy's lap hoping for toys? Perhaps, an early awareness of the humiliating nature of this degrading system of bondage, and wage slavery humans have so happily embraced? I’m not a fan of Christmas because it perpetuates the hyper-individualism, greed, and selfishness inherent in the capitalist system. This year however, I would like three things for Christmas, (1) worldwide anarchist communism, (2) looting and redistribution of the Christmas stockings of the rich (3) a good rave to keep the people moving through the night. The Terrace Episode Presents a very cool mix From Pulse Radio (http://pulseradio.net) of the great artist Troy Pierce. A Rebroadcast by The Terrace Podcast. ' www.theterracepodcast.com
Camilo Serna, Dj / Producer from Medellin, Colombia takes over episode 22. He will be in town at the end of March, performing at Miami's Techno Temple: The Techno Loft - Club Space! So we felt we had to give you a preview of a crazy night coming at us!!! A few words can easily describe his style: banging, hypnotic, complex, dark, deep and minimal groovy techno. As a full time techno soldier, Serna is one of the most talented emerging techno djs from Latin America. He started producing at his studio and doing live sets at various local parties, quickly becoming a favorite. In 2005, he formed Intelligent Division with a team of artists where they share their knowledge and love for the underground culture. Camilo Serna is no new-comer to a unique knowledge of composing music with banging, rare and uncompromising emotion. The sounds of Camilo Serna are pure and precise. A purity that immediately caught the mature ears of a lots of big labels and artists as soon as they heard his demos. Being able to succeed and show his music all over the globe. His new sound is pretty amazing in the long line of the Detroit-bred. He's capable of creating an atmosphere and of setting fire to the dancefloor wherever he goes. From the “Summer Dance Festival” in Cartagena- Colombia to “Pacha” in London, including the “Ministry Of Sound” as well and big festivals like the “Beatcamp Underground Festival” in Barranquilla. All his music is composed with the same energy than his DJ sets. He makes techno with an emphasis on dark and experimentation over popular sounds. Having recorded a few tracks with Deraout, other member of Intelligent Division Label, with an early and mid '90s sound, helped change the face of modern techno and sparked a creative renaissance. His debuts are in a large list of partys included djs like: Marco Lenzi, Dj Preach, Marco Carola, Renato Cohen, Deetron, Paul Mac, Mauro Picotto, Carl Cox, Camea, Adam Beyer, Space Djs, Ozgur Can, Danilo Vigorito, Valentino Kanzyani, Marco Nastic, Dj Budai, Joris Voorn, Ade Fentom, Technasia, Loco Dice, Magda, Troy Pierce, Dj Murphy, Paul Van Dyk, Umek, Derrick May, and more.
Hannes & Holger met behind the decks in spring 2008 at one of those openair parties which start as a gathering of friends and overflow in a park-rave of thousand euphoric people. Since then Hannes & Holger concentrate their energies on their collaboration: AKA AKA. Under contract with Oliver Koletzki’s label Stil vor Talent, March 2009 saw their debut 'Voegeln EP' released and supported by artists like Dubfire, Claude VonStroke and Troy Pierce. Their track 'Woody Woodpecker' stayed for one month on the Beatport minimal charts at place 1 and also the vinyl version hopped from 0 to 1 by release day on decks.de. In May 2010 it was awarded the with the 3rd place of the annual Beatport Music Awards in the category „best track minimal“. Also their 2nd and 3rd release on Stil vor Talent being played by Luciano, Adam Byer, Sharam (Deep Dish)Gus Gus and many more became a huge success. In October 2009 they started their own label Burlesque Musique which focuses on on non-conform minimal and techhouse influenced by swing, jazz, balkan, funk and other funny but danceable music. Besides Burlesque Musique they run the already since 2005 established music and party label Pentagonik. Known for their driving liveact and DJset the two play in most of Berlin's clubs like Arenaclub, Watergate, Maria, Tresor or Ritter Butzke. Travelling around Europe they visited clubs in Zurich, Madrid, Moscow, Turin, Vienna, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich etc. In March 2010 they played their first live performance at Watergate featuring their trumpeter Thalstroem who plays the trumpet and the Electronic Wind Instrument which adds a new floating layer to their music.
Following on with an older mix from the "archive" here is "Miniature Mix". This was originally recorded as entry for a DJ comp, in 2005. It sums up my style at the time and again the same clubs and DJs were influencing me then, as were 2 years earlier with my first podcast. It's stripped-down, underground house music with a darker edge. There are shades of deep house, electro, tech, tribal, acid and of course a few of the housier "minimal" tracks thrown into the mix. You'll hear the first release from "Louderbach" aka Troy Pierce and tracks from the following; James Falvour, Audio Werner, Someone Else, Onur Ozer, Gui Borratto, Ellen Alien, Falko Brockseiper, Lindstrom, Superpitcher, Justin Martin, Sten & more! It's recorded live using: 2 x Technics 1200's, 1 x Allen & Heath Xone:32 mixer, 1 x CDJ1000 and my brand new (at the time) Pioneer EFX:1000! There's feedback loops, FX and 3 deck mixing. Tuck in!
Lado new mix coincides with his new FVF release: TV Junkie EP inc Tony Rohr on remix duties. TV Junkie is available exclusively from Beatport and has received great support from Troy Pierce, Agoria, Stephan Bodzin, Slam, Nihad Tule, Miro Pajic, Heron, Tom Pooks and many more. Lots more en route from Lado so keep your ears open.

Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement HEARTTHROB Biography Currently one of the brightest stars in the Minus firmament, Heartthrob aka Jesse Siminski has arrived on the scene with a fresh new take on the minimal sound. It’s not just his ear for a killer riff that makes him such an exciting prospect it’s also his natural ability to convey a sense of drama and humour through his music. There’s an infectious energy in his sound that rubs off on his audiences but it can also be heard in his musical collaborations. Heartthrob brings something new to the table - be it quirky melodic hooks or twisted vocals - that manages to inspire those around him to even greater heights. Growing up in the remote and rural town of Marquette, Michigan, situated about 6 hours North of Detroit, music was a vital part of his upbringing. Dad played guitar in a number of bands that regularly practiced at their house and this healthy diet of rock, funk and reggae together with his older sister‘s obsession with Prince, shaped his appreciation of dance music from an early age. Erotic City, Laid Back’s ‘White Horse’ and Kraftwerk‘s ‘Tour de France’ are still huge influences from that time. Jesse discovered techno music around 1996 through a magazine called ‘Massive’ that covered the new rave culture exploding in the Midwest. Plastikman’s ‘Gak’ was one track in particular that opened his eyes and motivated him to visit his first Rave. Needless to say, he was totally hooked! He immediately bought turntables and started looking for synthesizers to make music, starting out with some retro 70’s gear handed down from his father. Next to studying art and painting, music rapidly became his true passion although it was never something he seriously considered as a career option. All that was to change when he hooked up with Magda in New York in 1999 and was immediately taken by her warm nature and fantastic musical sense. She and Troy Pierce had started working on music and introduced him to Ableton Live. Shortly after, Richie Hawtin moved into the same building as them, it was a very natural situation during which this dedicated band of producers and djs began laying foundations for the future. Since then the learning curve has been steep. Jesse swapped New York for Paris in 2005 to focus his full attention on production and performance and by his own admission it’s been an incredible experience. Being invited to use Richie Hawtin’s studio and remixing Depeche Mode’s ‘Personal Jesus’ are two major moments that particularly stand out for him since arriving in Europe however ‘Baby Kate’, the memorable opening to 2006’s min2MAX compilation is the track that has come to define his sound. Heartthrob describes his approach to music as “a messy ‘stream of consciousness’ daydream”. The challenge for him is to make something unique and personal that speaks for itself, regardless of whether it stays true to form or not. The traditional functionality of Techno music must always be present but for Jesse it’s all about taking risks and trusting his instincts, which is why his own particular style is so varied, covering a whole lot more than just glitches, bleeps and sound effects. Melody plays a significant roll in his work, often providing the focal point around which the rest of the track orbits. There is also an inherent darkness to his music but just as it’s always darkest before the dawn, there’s often an uplifting, cathartic side to it that celebrates the unified spirit and generates such a positive vibe on the dancefloor. Music also allows him to document his experiences and with the cast of characters that surround him, inspiration is never far away. With tongue firmly fixed in cheek, he often creates fantasy personas that get documented through vocals or song titles, like a secret tribute and with such an impressive collection of releases and remixes already to his name (both as Heartthrob and alter ego Vivienne Projects), it can only be a matter of time before the tributes start flowing back the other way. Special Thanks to Mr Meike Nolte,Rudy Delgado & Richie Hawtin http://www.m-nus.com/ http://www.plus8.com/ http://www.contakt-events.com/
Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground Movement
Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementTROY PIERCE Biography Growing up in the quiet farm town of Muncie, Indiana four hours drive from Chicago and Detroit, it was hard to ignore the rich sounds emanating from these House and Techno strongholds. Troy was among the first to pick up on DJs like Derrick Carter, Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin and was always out and about at parties in Detroit, Ohio and across the Midwest. Strangely enough though, he never thought about picking up a pair of headphones himself, preferring to leave the DJ duties to his friends. This way he could fully immerse himself in the music, especially the experimental ambient tones of the after hour chill outs. This all changed in 1994. He moved to New York to study photography and like every student worth their salt, blew the remainder of his cash on a pair of turntables. He’d been toying with the idea for a while and as luck would have it his flatmate was also the manager of Temple Records so there was an endless supply of quality tunes on hand from labels like Perlon to satisfy his growing vinyl addiction. Troy eventually hooked up with Magda at the Detroit Music Festival in 2001, who in turn introduced him to Mark Houle six months later. An immediate chemistry developed between the three of them and although Magda was now in Berlin, Mark in Windsor and Troy in New York they started swapping music files over the net. By the time the Run Stop Restore project finally crystallised into their debut release in early 2003, Troy had already moved to Berlin. It was a big decision to leave but somehow New York no longer offered up-and-coming musicians the same freedom of expression it used to, while Germany and Berlin in particular was setting new standards in minimal electronic music production. Since touching down in December 2002, he’s been letting his music do the talking. As a relative unknown, it’s never easy staking a claim in a new city, especially one with such a rich musical heritage but sure enough, through a string of successful gigs and a mixture of impressive releases on Minus (Run and Slacknoise), Underline (Louderbach) and Mo’s Ferry Productions, Troy has been attracting the right kind of attention and is now a regular performer on the European circuit. 2005 was the year when it all came good. The release of the Minimise to Maximise compilation and the accompanying tour left a lasting impression on clubbers at such centres of excellence as Robert Johnson in Offenbach and the Paradiso in Amsterdam but perhaps the real turning point came in August at pop.com. All those endless nights on the road and solitary days in the studio came together in one heart stopping set at the Watergate club. Taking the game to an expectant crowd including fellow producers and industry types, his uncompromising mix of minimal house and down beat, funked up techno announced, in no uncertain terms, that he was here for the long haul.As a DJ, attempts to categorise his style pose more questions than they answer. Minimalism in its purest form is a tag he more freely associates with labels like Consumed - ‘super sparse, difficult and totally out there’. Troy on the other hand, has developed a dance floor friendly hybrid sound that takes the best from the ‘little movements and micro trends’ that constantly spring up, helping electronic music to evolve. It retains the mechanical, futuristic sounds of techno but is slower and less abrasive allowing him to work between the lines, exploit the space between the beats and push out into the third dimension that epitomises the Minus sound. Like his label mates, Troy is a strong advocate of cutting edge technology like Ableton Live, Final Scratch and sample tools like Cyloop. The ability to shift between these sound sources offers him unparalleled flexibility as a DJ but the benefits don’t just stop there. He recalls road testing a new track one night in Berlin, getting the thumbs up from the rest of crew but then receiving puzzled calls the next day because the track didn’t sound quite the same – he was of course looping in samples ‘on the fly’ and it was this spontaneous improvisation that really set the dancefloor alight. Needless to say these overdubs found their way into the final mix. From a production point of view his tracks normally derive from experimenting with his Machine Drum or expanding outwards from the dark, atmospheric vocal elements that play a pivotal role in many of his productions. Inspiration often comes through choice regarding the effects he uses, rejecting standard, tried and tested settings in favour of unique percussive elements designed to challenge and intrigue. The result is a montage of scratchy subliminal textures and grinding beats. It’s edgy stuff driven by dark funky bass riffs that get right under the skin, the perfect tonic for any after hour as sleep deprivation starts playing tricks with the mind. As it stands, 2006 promises to be an even busier year than 2005. Having provided the backbone of their releases so far, Troy will wrap up his work for UK label Underline with the eagerly anticipated Louderbach LP. Alongside this, his growing status as a remixer (check out his version of Ellen Allien’s Your Body is My Body) will see him reworking the likes of Lawrence and Donnacha Costello. There’s also another Run EP in the pipeline but maybe the most interesting development is the conception of a new label - Items and Things - together with Magda and Marc Houle which should take flight in the spring. If that’s not enough, there’s a full-on, five week Minus tour of the US on the horizon. Richie, Magda, Marc and Troy will set off in May (complete with monster tour bus) for what can only be described as a next generation magical mystery tour during which they’ll take in 25 cities. They probably won’t be stopping in Muncie but it’s a sign of just how much his stock has risen over the past couple of years and confirmation that a solid work ethic, positive thinking and a total dedication to the cause always bears fruit in the end. Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementWith the release of her solo STOP EP on Minus, Magda can finally afford to take stock of a whirlwind few years that have seen the insatiable demand for her very special blend of house and techno carry her the length and breadth of the globe. November 2005 and Magda’s set is reaching its climax at London’s Fabric. One moment she’s pounding the crowd with her very own 48 Hour Crack In Your Bass, the next the hairs on the back of 500 necks simultaneously stand to attention as the moody chords from Strafe’s all time classic Set It Off produce a collective gasp of appreciation from the dancefloor. She’s in the zone, unphased by the raucous response she’s generating. Virtually hidden by the racks of fx units and monitors surrounding her, she remains a picture of calmness, dictating the play with a cool hand. It’s easy to see why she’s one of the most exciting prospects to breakthrough in recent years. Magda makes things happen. Always has done, always will do. Currently residing in Berlin, a relative stone’s throw from her home town of Zywiec in Poland considering the nomadic existence of her childhood, she seems to have finally found a city that mirrors her own attitude to life - no restrictions and certainly no compromise. It’s a philosophy that also flows through Magda’s music particularly during her after hour sets. The ability to guide her audience through the dark recesses of contemporary minimalism before delivering them back safely into the light means her name is never far from the lips of discerning clubbers and fellow DJs alike. Her family left Zywiec for Texas in 1984 when she was nine before finally settling in Detroit in 1986. All this traveling around from one starkly contrasting environment to another, taught her to deal with new challenges and to adapt to new situations pretty quickly, lessons that have subsequently helped her deal with the often hectic life of a touring DJ. Always the outsider, the concept of ‘home’ was never as straightforward as it is for some. Sometimes though, home isn’t a physical location, it’s a state of mind and when she first turned up at a warehouse party a couple of blocks from where she’d grown up in the tough district of Hamtramck, she knew she’d found it. This initial foray into the Detroit underground culminated in the mind-blowing experience that was Spastik - Richie Hawtin’s first Plastikman PA. She was hooked. Within a few months, armed with a cheap pair of belt drive turntables and an unquenchable thirst for vinyl, she’d moved from one side of the shop counter to the other at the influential Record Time store and had also persuaded the bar where she worked to put on a monthly techno night with Claude Young and Daniel Bell. Her enthusiasm was totally infectious and they soon asked her to warm up for them. In conversation it’s clear to see how much the lack of attitude and unconditional support from Bell in particular has shaped Magda’s own way of doing things. Then, inspired by her mother’s ‘dark and surreal’ art she decided to study Graphic Design in New York state but soon realized music was the most natural medium for her self expression. Nevertheless, this abstract influence can still be found in her music production, juxtaposing as she does warm, thick swathes of sound with jagged little hi hat patterns, sometimes lazy, sometimes clinical but always purposeful and expressive. On returning to Detroit she met Richie Hawtin at one of the legendary Hot Box parties where a mutual friend introduced her. It was the first of what turned out to be a couple of chaotic encounters that eventually led to the invitation of a gig at Hawtin’s 13 Below night. It was there she first met Marc Houle. Their off-beat humor quickly developed into an unshakeable friendship and Magda was soon lodging with Marc in Windsor where their musical symbiosis started laying the foundations for 2003’s Run Stop Restore project together with Troy Pierce. By this time she’d already cut her teeth on the main stage, regularly performing at the System raves in Detroit and as part of the Women on Wax collective. Things don’t always go according to plan though, and by 1999 Magda was pretty much fed up with the ‘scene politics’ that seemed directly at odds with the feelings she’d first encountered. She took a step back, followed her heart and immersed herself in the minimal sounds scuttling out of Germany in particular (i.e Brinkmann, Perlon, Kompakt). The resulting bootleg CD mix - Fact and Friction - won her a new set of admirers and consolidated her growing relationship with Hawtin, opening for him at the millennium celebration EPOK and also forming part of an enviable line up at the Plus 8 ten year anniversary party From Our Minds To Yours. Since then she has become his sole choice as opening DJ, accompanying him on both European and Stateside tours. The new millennium brought a host of new digital technology with it, most notably Final Scratch and when she wasn’t on the road she could be found wiling away the hours transferring Hawtin’s vast record collection into the digital domain. At the time there were only about ten DJs using Final Scratch and while others regarded it with suspicion, Magda was quick to see the potential, re-editing her favorite tracks to further enhance the distinctive flavor of her sets. She shies away slightly from the ubiquitous ‘minimal’ tag, citing Chicago Jack and Acid as equally significant ingredients in her sound but whichever way you look at it, she is part of a movement that is rapidly redefining electronic dance music as we know it. Turntables, laptops, samplers and efx units now clutter her DJ booth as the wall between traditional DJing and ‘on the fly’ production starts to crumble. And so, the Minus train rumbles on, forging a relentless path through new, uncharted territory. Magda however, remains refreshingly free from the burden of expectation. Genuinely surprised by the trajectory her life has taken yet deeply aware of the responsibility she has to her growing army of fans, she faces the future with the same wide-eyed, ‘devil may care’ attitude that has always accompanied her from city to city, from airport to airport, from disco to disco. A lonely existence? For some maybe but Magda knows more than most that home is where the heart is. Berlin is a fickle friend, a city that throws up unlimited scope and unseen perils in equal measures. A muse to some - spurring them on to new heights of creativity, a vampire’s kiss to others - intoxicating at first, it eventually sucks them dry, leaving a hollow shell with nothing left but dreams of what might have been. Luckily, Magda already had something of the night about her when she arrived in 2003 and, liberated from the clutches of New York’s draconian attitude to club culture, she took to the Berlin underground like a fish to water. The notorious Beatstreet afterhour parties got the energy coursing through her veins once more and she immediately set about reevaluating and redefining her relationship to the music. An intense flurry of activity followed. Together with Troy Pierce and Marc Houle, Magda began exploring new production possibilities, honing her turntable skills and extending her dj sets in order to satisfy the insatiable appetites of Berlin’s club kids. The transition was by no means straight forward, taking both time and dedication but the hybrid sound that emerged, drawing inspiration from the twin towers of Berlin and Detroit, has gone on to capture the imagination of clubbers the world over. In this sense, last year’s mix compilation She’s a Dancing Machine represents the first volume of her audio-biography and sums up the ambition that drives this diminutive figure behind the decks. Somehow finding the time to throw down an epic 70 track, multi-layered excursion between the 130 shows she clocked up in 2006 (never mind the afterhours) really cemented her reputation, topping off a year that also saw her hold successful residencies at Robert Johnson (Offenbach), Technique (Leeds) and Fuse (Brussels) plus numerous appearances at festivals around the globe such as Lowlands, Sonar, The Detroit Music Festival and Mutek. Yet despite reaching the enviable position of being able to choose her gigs, there is no room for complacency. Shouldering the increasing weight of expectation she has come to expect the unexpected, in fact adversity has often propelled her on to greater things. There’s also a sense of duty to keep pushing the envelope and this year she’ll be expanding her set-up to incorporate new technology in addition to the delay pedals and edits that already give her sets their distinctive flavour. It’s a move that should blur the boundaries between studio production and live performance even further and will no doubt help formulate ideas for her upcoming album which promises to be another continuous exploration into deep, dark, minimal disco. However before that there’s a string of remixes to enjoy for 2007 including Heartthrob’s Baby Kate (Minus), Gotham Road by Ryan Crosson (Trapez) and Louderbach (Underline). It’s also worth keeping an eye on Items and Things, the new label from Magda, Marc and Troy that’s home to their more abstract, off the wall creations. Someone once said‚ the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary. Well, Magda has definitely put in the work although she’s happier leaving the definition of success to others. The arrival is superfluous. Just like her late night musical excursions, it’s the journey that’s important and with it the desire to maintain the high standards she sets and feed the creative hunger within - if that’s also good enough for us, then so be it.
