Jonas Mekas. Nervuoti dienoraščiai „Žmogus be vietos“.

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 9, 2024 16:40

Following World Cup news of Japan's 1-nil loss to Costa Rica and other news suggesting World Cup frenzy is putting a strain on Qatar's camel industry, the Lithuanian filmmaker Jonas Mekas took place over the weekend with a day of film screenings at the University of Tokyo. However, attention turns to the late Japanese film director Yoichi Sai, best known for his depiction of Koreans living in Japan with his debut “Mosquito on the 10th Floor” (1983) a controversial landmark that describes the fall of a character upholding the law while consumed by vice and the changing face of contemporary Japan. For Sai and Mekas, the exploration of social outcasts were filmed in infinitely different ways, experiences that are thankfully being revisited and remembered. Learn more about your ad choices. Today, Ian and Sujewa get personal with a look at Jonas Mekas' 2012 film, Out-Takes from the Life of a Happy Man. The hour-plus assemblage of footage from the prototypical film diarist's life paints a portrait of a well-traveled creative person. But is there something deeper, even contradictory, in Mekas' visually cheerful account of artistic pursuits? The guys talk about Mekas as a director; his influence on arthouse cinema; and what young filmmakers can learn from the old master, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 96.Also, Sujewa gives an update on his forthcoming movie, The Secret Society for Slow Romance!"The Slowdown" is Kicking the Seat's monthly exploration of the world of Slow Cinema with filmmaker Sujewa Ekanayake. The New York Review of Books’.

Underground filmmaker Barbara Rubin’s 1964 art-porn masterpiece “Christmas on Earth”, made when she was only 18 years old, shattered creative and sexist boundaries and shocked NYC's experimental film scene. Working with Jonas Mekas at the Filmmaker’s Coop, Rubin was instrumental in creating NYC's thriving underground film community and a rare female voice in a world of powerful men. A rebellious Zelig of the Sixties, she introduced Andy Warhol to the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan to the Kabbalah. But beyond shaping the spirit of the Sixties, Barbara was seeking the deeper meaning of life. After retiring to a farm with Allen Ginsberg, she shocked everyone by becoming a Hasidic Jew. How and why did one of the 1960’s freest spirits submit to a religious life? For years, 94-year-old filmmaker Jonas Mekas has saved all of Barbara’s letters and cherished her memory. Working with Mekas’ footage and rare clips from the Andy Warhol archives, the film takes us inside the world and mind of Barbara Rubin; a woman who truly believed that film could change the world and then vanished into obscurity. Director Chuck Smith joins us for a conversation on the life and times of a gifted artistic protégé and the impact she had on the people who loved her.

Overwatch Removing Any Mention of Starcraft from D.Va’s History

Over the course of a couple of tweets, Michael Chu, Lead Story Developer for Overwatch,  has confused most of Overwatch's fanbase due to a lore discrepancy. According to him, D.Va isn't specifically a StarCraft pro gamer, only a pro gamer in general. This clashes with what literally everyone who pays attention to the lore has known from day one, but Chu waves it away as "a common misconception." Yeah, common. Common among the whole world, including Jeff Kaplan. In a recent Forbes interview, the creator of Overwatch himself stated that, "We have D.Va as a StarCraft pro." In case you're not caught up on Overwatch lore, here's the rundown: In the near future, humanity succeeded in creating sentient robots called Omnics. Unfortunately for them, Omnics immediately turned around and rose up against the humans that couldn't decide whether they were tools or people. In a move reminiscent of Pacific Rim, a kaiju-like Omnic emerged from the depths of the ocean off the coast of South Korea and began attacking. The military managed to repel the gigantic Omnic, but unfortunately it wasn't destroyed, merely forced back into the depths. After analyzing the battles it'd been in, it adapted to the techniques and strategies the military used and rose once again a few years later, ready to fight again. Up until one of those battles, the South Korean military had been using remote-controlled battle robots called MEKAs to combat the threat. However, one of the Omnic's adaptations was a signal jammer, rendering the 'remote' part of that useless. The military was forced to use piloted MEKAs, but they didn't have anybody within their ranks with the needed reflexes. So they turned to the pro gamers. D.Va was specifically stated to be the most elite StarCraft player in the world, rising to the top spot at the age of 16 and remaining undefeated in all competitions for the next three years. No other games are ever mentioned, and so it was assumed that StarCraft was her specialty. In fact, her "Raising my APM!" voice-line is a reference to the 'actions per minute' mechanic of the StarCraft series, basically determining how many actions a person can take per turn. Until recently, D.Va even had a page on StarCraft's World Championship Series website. The WCS is a place where bios of all the top players for StarCraft can be found, so the fact that D.Va's page specifically stated that "at the age of 16, [she] became the #1 ranked player in the world and proceeded to go undefeated for the next three years in all competitions," is a pretty clear indication that she was a pro StarCraft gamer. It also stated that she toured around the world for exhibitions and competitions, as using the Wayback machine to view the page can show. Unfortunately, that page has now been deleted. Now, since this issue has been brought to people's attention, Michael Chu has taken to the Blizzard forums to clarify further. "Misconception probably wasn't the right way to describe it," he said, "more like something that we haven't clarified properly. I think the best I can do here is give the backstory (har har) on how we got here: Going back to when we announced D.Va as a hero, we had been experimenting with using different methods of teasing new characters. We thought it'd be fun to use the StarCraft WCS site and slip D.Va in as she had a background as a pro gamer (this all happened before she was officially announced). At the time, I actually worried that it would be taken as canon, but I was hoping elements like the fact her preferred race was listed as "random" and the fact she couldn't have competed in the current series would help defray that. In hindsight, yeah... pretty confusing. D.Va is absolutely a world champion professional gamer which was what got her recruited into MEKA in the first place. However her best game wasn't StarCraft (which was what I was attempting to clarify). We imagined that she was most known and specialized in a game ...

Jonas and I talked about refugees and memory, about ambient noise, poetry, the new film I Had Nowhere To Go, and why he's spent a lifetime ignoring Hollywood. For more information on I Had Nowhere To Go (IMDB) and TIFF. Synopsis Internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Douglas Gordon (24 Hour Psycho, Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait) returns to the Festival with this intimate portrait of avant-garde cinema legend Jonas Mekas. "An adventurer can always return home; an exile cannot. So I decided that culture would be my home." Jonas Mekas Internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Douglas Gordon returns to the Festival with an intimate portrait of Jonas Mekas, the legendary poet, film critic, risk-taking curator, "the godfather of the American avant-garde cinema" -- and, at 93 years old, among the remaining few to have escaped and survived Nazi persecution. I Had Nowhere to Go plunges us into both a collective and individual space of memory via long, imageless stretches over which Mekas narrates, in his inimitable voice, excerpts from his memoir (which lends the film its title). An extraordinary life story emerges as the film zigzags between Mekas' early years in a forced labour camp and a Displaced Person centre during WWII and his arrival in New York as a young Lithuanian émigré. With an immersive sound environment and intermittent, fleeting images that stand in evocative juxtaposition to Mekas' anecdotes, Gordon's film reveals in its subject a puckish humour that outweighs despair, and an unabated zest for life that both illuminates and softens the sadness. A deeply moving tribute from one great artist to another and a singular work in its own right, I Had Nowhere to Go has timely resonance today as mass migratory movements are displacing millions of people throughout the world as refugees, exiles, and stateless persons. While Mekas is certainly no ordinary person, the story he tells is a profoundly humble one, as much about daily survival as it is about aspiring to accomplish so much more. Gordon, who is ingenious at activating memory and the cinematic imaginary, compellingly presents quotidian moments outside of Mekas' famous film-related activities in order to reveal the desires, impulses, melancholy, and perseverance that inform Mekas' filmmaking and infectious love of cinema. Even when truly having nowhere to go, Mekas always saw brief glimpses of beauty as he was moving ahead. Biography Jonas Mekas - Writer Jonas Mekas born December 24, 1922, is a Lithuanian-born American filmmaker, writer, and curator who has often been called "the godfather of American avant-garde cinema." His work has been exhibited in museums and festivals across Europe and America. In 1944, Mekas left Lithuania because of war. En route, his train was stopped in Germany and he and his brother, Adolfas Mekas, were imprisoned in a labor camp in Elmshorn, a suburb of Hamburg, for eight months. The brothers escaped and were detained near the Danish border where they hid on a farm for two months until the end of the war. After the war, Mekas lived in displaced person camps in Wiesbaden and Kassel. From 1946-48, he studied philosophy at the University of Mainz and at the end of 1949, he emigrated with his brother to the U.S., settling in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. After his arrival, he borrowed the money to buy his first Bolex 16-mm camera and began to record moments of his life. He discovered avant-garde film at venues such as Amos Vogel's pioneering Cinema 16, and he began screening his own films in 1953 at Gallery East on Avenue A and Houston Street, and a Film Forum series at Carl Fisher Auditorium on 57th Street. In 1954, he became editor of Film Culture, and in 1958, began writing his "Movie Journal" column for The Village Voice. In 1962, he co-founded Film-Makers' Cooperative (FMC) and the Filmmaker's Cinematheque in 1964, which eventually grew into Anthology Film Archives, one of the world’s largest and most important repositories of avant-garde films. The films and the voluminous collection of photographs and paper documents (mostly from or about avant garde film makers of the 1950-1980 period) were moved from time to time based on Mekas' ability to raise grant money to pay to house the massive collection. He was part of the New American Cinema, with, in particular, fellow film-maker Lionel Rogosin. He was heavily involved with artists such as Andy Warhol, Nico, Allen Ginsberg, Yoko Ono, John Lennon, Salvador Dalí, and fellow Lithuanian George Maciunas. In 1970, Anthology Film Archives opened on 425 Lafayette Street as a film museum, screening space, and a library, with Mekas as its director. Mekas, along with Stan Brakhage, Ken Kelman, Peter Kubelka, James Broughton, and P. Adams Sitney, begin the ambitious Essential Cinema project at Anthology Film Archives to establish a canon of important cinematic works. Mekas' own output ranging from narrative films (Guns of the Trees, 1961) to documentaries (The Brig, 1963) and to "diaries" such as Walden (1969); Lost, Lost, Lost (1975);Reminiscences of a Voyage to Lithuania (1972) and Zefiro torna (1992) have been screened extensively at festivals and museums around the world. In 2001, he released a five-hour long diary film entitled As I Was Moving Ahead. Martin Scorsese said once: "Jonas Mekas is the one that gave me the desire and strength to be a director." Douglas Gordon - Director Douglas Gordon's practice encompasses video and film, installation, sculpture, photography, and text. Through his work, Gordon investigates human conditions like memory and the passage of time, as well as universal dualities such as life and death, good and evil, right and wrong. Gordon's oeuvre has been exhibited globally and his film works have been presented at many competitions, including the Festival de Cannes, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the International Venice Film Festival. Gordon received the 1996 Turner Prize, the Premio 2000 prize for best young artist at the 1997 Venice Biennale, and the 1998 Hugo Boss Prize. Most recently, in May 2008 he was awarded the Roswitha Haftmann Prize by the Kunsthaus Zurich and, in 2012 the KätheKollwitz Prize from the Akademie der Künste, Berlin. Gordon was the International Juror at the 65th International Venice Film Festival, and in 2012 he was the Jury president of CinemaXXI at the 7th International Rome Film Festival. In December 2014 Douglas Gordon and pianist Hélène Grimaud have joined forces to explore the beauty of water in an extraordinary performance at Armory on Park, New York. The collaboration continued when Gordon directed the theatre performance Neck of the Woods starring Charlotte Rampling and Hélène Grimuaud at the 2015 MIF - Manchester International Festival, Manchester. Born in Scotland, Gordon lives and works in Berlin and Glasgow and teaches film at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main. He is represented internationally by Gagosian Gallery, as well as Untilthen in Paris, Galerie Eva Presenhuber in Zürich, and Dvir Gallery in Tel Aviv See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

PMS11 | All I Want For Christmas Is Worldwide Anarchist Communism | Attentat When looking for a picture to use for my Photographic Memories Series submission this seemed the most appropriate for obvious reasons. It's almost Christmas; a time of year so easy to love and hate with equal passion. Easy to love because, it’s nice to spend time with friends and family, and easy to hate because, well, it’s Christmas. By the look on my face it appears I embraced distaste for the celebration of baby Jesus. This is insightful because I remember myself being a greedy little bastard at that age. I remember, once, my selfishness got the best of me, and I attempted to clandestinely open a gift while hiding behind a rocking chair in my parent’s living room, only to be caught by one of my siblings with a handful of brand new LEGO pieces in my sticky paws. I used to beg to open gifts before Christmas day, and sometimes my parents would give in, mostly because I wouldn't leave them alone until I got my way. When I found this photo it gave me hope I wasnäó»t always a greedy little tub of fat; a pushy whiner that pressured people until they gave in to his demands. If only I knew why I was wearing a look of disgust and disappointment? Is my grimace a sign of my future attitude towards Christmas and popular culture? An attitude containing heavy doses of cynicism and disgust aimed at the obsession capitalist society places on the accumulation of material goods? Maybe, it’s a look saying, I'm just freaked out by the fact I'm sitting on a creepy guy's lap hoping for toys? Perhaps, an early awareness of the humiliating nature of this degrading system of bondage, and wage slavery humans have so happily embraced? I’m not a fan of Christmas because it perpetuates the hyper-individualism, greed, and selfishness inherent in the capitalist system. This year however, I would like three things for Christmas, (1) worldwide anarchist communism, (2) looting and redistribution of the Christmas stockings of the rich (3) a good rave to keep the people moving through the night. Please Santa! I promise I was good this year! 1. Claudio PRC äóñ Clear Depths 2. Function äóñ Variance 3 (Marcel Dettmann Edit) 3. Ryan Elliot äóñ Abatis 4. Obtane äóñ Thrilling Love 5. A DJ-set mixed by Argentinian Gonzalo MD (@exe-88). A sound designer based in Buenos Aires. For the next hour and fifty minutes we will hear a set mixed with “real hands, vinyls and cdjs” with tracks from: Philippe Petit, Paul Mac, Mekas, Nihad Tule, Myk Derill, Tom Diccico, Emmanuel, Glos, Stefan Vincent, The Plant Worker, Divvorce, A&S. Also tracks from his three latest vinyls, releases on Knotweed Records, Ressort Imprint and DMT. Gonzalo MD presents an energetic set, almost reminiscent to the fraze “Jackin”. Just in terms of great techno music. We hope to see more of this talented producer and dj in the near future. We hope you enjoy this weeks podcast, and don't forget to follow Monument for more techno, art, and upcoming events! Q&A: ----------------- You have released on Knotweed and DMT. Tell us about the concepts that lay behind these labels? ----------------- Knotweed was the first label that really I trusted with my productions, so I released on vinyl with them. The opportunity to release on DMT (a label which I respect so much) was thanks to Philippe Petit; Decision Making Theory was a label that grew a lot in a short time. That was because of the quality the label presents through their releases. The label is focused on a Detroit, raw, acid sound with a minimalist concept. ----------------- You refer to yourself as a sound designer. What is the difference in being a sound designer, a producer and a DJ. Give us your opinion ----------------- A sound designer isn't just composing music. A sound designer even has to adapt to an environment, plan, create and make that piece/production count in history. The most important part is that the designer has to figure out a way to make a track work according to how the idea of the track. ----------------- We are under the impression that you some how are infatuated by the city of Detroit, explain why. ----------------- I always felt chemistry with that city. The culture, the history, people, architecture, music, were a huge inspiration to achieve a sound which it is like a tribute to that great city. ----------------- What does techno music mean to you? ----------------- I learned to produce in one of worst moments of my life. I needed to find something to amuse myself and made me forget everything. With techno, I found myself with my feet planted on the ground. When I am in the moment in my studio, everything else disappears. It is only me, my machines and Techno! ----------------- Finally, what are your plans for future releases, gigs etc? ----------------- At the end of this year i'm going to do a release for Plector Records. A Belgian label with great artist as Stanislav Tolkachev, Charlton, Sleeparchive and a few more. Also, i'm going to release in a new label with various artist from Malta, Italia. I can’t give so much more information about this. My next performances will be all in Capital Federal(Buenos Aires), 21st of june and 18th of july and a few more still to confirm. https://soundcloud.com/exe-88 https://www.facebook.com/GonzaloMD?fref=ts https://www.facebook.com/MonuMnt Artwork: deadsuperhero - Atomic Dandy
