What can I say about this episode? It runs the gamut. The main topic is the Triangle Shirtwaiste Fire and how two businessmen who were in the habit of locking doors while employees worked doomed 147 mostly immigrants and women to their deaths. We talk the history of the company, the state of the US for workers in 1911 and the fire itself. We also cover the trial and the legacy of the fire. Arthur reminisces about his trip to Planet Comicon, and talks the Roblox sensation Dandy's World as we discuss why it's so important why there needs to be laws in place to protect workers in this whole lotta historical, little bit silly but a lotta bit sad episode of the Family Plot Podcast!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

On March 25th, 1911, a fire erupted on the 8th floor of the Asch building in New York City. The 8th, 9th, and 10th floors of this building housed the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory which employed around 500 people, mostly young immigrant women, to sew women's blouses under sweatshop conditions. The owners, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, believed the building to be fireproof and refused to take any fire safety measures. They also locked the exit doors, fearful that the women would steal from them if allowed to leave before their bags could be searched. Due to this negligence, 123 women and 23 men died, burned alive, trapped in locked stairwells or waiting for the only elevator. Many of the victims were forced to jump from 8th and 9th floor windows, their broken bodies littering the sidewalk below. This horrifying tragedy was a wakeup call for labor conditions in the US, leading to the passing of more than 30 health and safety laws. But what of Blanck and Harris? Were they punished? Did they learn their lesson? Of course not. Support the show! In 1911, a devastating fire raged through the Triangle Waist Company, killing 146. It was one of the worst workplace disasters in American history. Many people blamed the factory's owners, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, and wanted them to pay. But at Blanck and Harris's manslaughter trial, a shrewd defense attorney and weak worker protection laws ensured that the prosecutors were in for the fight of their life...See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As we head into the season proper, stay up to date by subscribing to Hawks Insiders for news, match recaps, exclusive pods, player ratings, and insights into all things Hawthorn Football Club.Hawthorn v EssendonSaturday 16 March, 1.45pmMelbourne Cricket GroundFinally!! Round 1, 2024 is upon us. The quicker our pre-season is forgotten the better. It's time to look ahead to what will hopefully be an exciting 2024 and there's no better to start the season than a clash against our arch rivals, Essendon, in front of a 75,000+ crowd at the MCG on a Saturday afternoon. The make up of our Round 1 side will be fascinating. Unfortunately, injuries to key players during the pre-season have made things incredibly difficult for match committee heading into the early rounds of the season.Let's take a look at how I think the team will look in Round 1.The backlineOur first choice full back James Blanck suffered a season ending ACL injury in the intra-club a few week's ago. Talk about a disaster. 25 year old key defender Ethan Phillips, who recently joined Box Hill from Port Melbourne, was promoted to the list and is a chance to play against the Bombers. I think he needs a few weeks at Box Hill and Sam Frost will get the first crack at full back. Frost will have a huge job against Peter Wright this week, and the last time Frost played on Wright, he kicked 6.0. Josh Weddle, Karl Amon & Jarman Impey will provide the run, whilst Jack Scrimshaw & skipper James Sicily will fill the other roles. Our backline is in for a world of pain if our midfield struggles like they have all pre-season.The midfieldPeter Crimmins Medalist, and arguably our best midfielder Will Day suffered a stress fracture in his foot and will miss at least the first 5 weeks of the season. If we are looking at the positives, it will give an opportunity for a couple of our young guns in Cam Mackenzie and Henry Hustwaite to earn a spot in the team over the opening few weeks. Both Mackenzie and Hustwaite were shining lights in the pre-season and will both get opportunities to play early on in the season. For Round 1, there's only room for one. Jai Newcombe will once again lead the midfield and despite playing under 55 games, has become one of the best inside midfielders in the AFL. James Worpel & Connor Nash need to stand up and provide Newcombe with more support. They have both had average pre-seasons and with Day out, the pressure will be on. The Bombers best midfielder is Zach Merrett - does Finn Maginness play to tag Merrett? With Darcy Parish in doubt, the question will be, do the Hawks go head to head, or play a tagger? If Merrett has under 20 touches, the Hawks should win. The wing position is also an interesting watch at selection. Former Bomber Massimo D'Ambrosio has impressed this pre-season and deserves to play against his former team. Josh Ward is another one that's played predominantly wing this pre-season. In my opinion he is not a wingman, but his ability to play inside mid cements his spot in the team. Harry Morrison finished season 2023 in good form and seems to be a Sam Mitchell favourite. I have him just missing out for Round 1.The ruckMajor alarm bells. Ned Reeves had some quality games last season but his issue to run out games and ability to impact around the ground was a big problem. From what I've seen this pre-season, it's going to carry over into season 2024. As we saw last season, the Reeves and Meek combination doesn't work, so unless Reeves is injured, Meek will be playing at Box Hill this season. The forward lineA completely new and exciting look for season 2024. Former Tiger and Sun Mabior Chol has arrived to partner Mitch Lewis & to help Reeves in the ruck. Collingwood premiership player Jack Ginnivan comes in to partner Luke Breust and the exciting number 5 pick in last year's draft, Nick “the Wizard” Watson. Dylan Moore is set to play after suffering glandular fever in the pre-season. His class and leadership will be crucial throughout the season. We also welcome back Jack Gunston, who will provide great experience and leadership. I can see Gunston playing as a swingman early on in the season. Expect him to spend time down in the backline and to play at least 15 games this season. The most interesting move this pre-season has been Blake Hardwick's move forward. Can it work? Here's my team for Round 1:FB: Impey Frost SicilyHB: Scrimshaw Weddle AmonC: D'Ambrosio Nash WardHF: Macdonald Lewis HardwickFF: Breust Chol Ginnivan R: Reeves Newcombe WorpelINT: Watson Gunston Moore Mackenzie (Hustwaite)EMG: Phillips Mitchell Morrison Ramsden Injured (not considered): Day, Wingard, Jiath, Blanck, Grainger-BarrasUnder the pump: James Worpel, Connor Nash, Josh Ward, Sam FrostWhat do we think, Hawks fans? A new study adds to evidence that obesity is becoming more common in young children in America. The study appeared in the medical publication Pediatrics. The findings are similar to other national data, which suggests around 2.5 percent of all preschool-aged children were severely obese during the same period. One of the study's writers, Heidi Blanck of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said “We were doing well and now we see this upward trend....We are dismayed at seeing these findings.” Dismayed is a term that means very worried or disappointed. The study looked at children ages 2 to 4 who took part in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. The program gives healthy foods and other services to preschool-aged children in low-income families. The children were weighed and measured. The researchers found that 2.1 percent of kids in the program were severely obese in 2010. Six years later, the rate had dropped to 1.8 percent. But by 2020, it was 2 percent. That amounts to about 33,000 of more than 1.6 million kids in the WIC program. The study showed major increases in 20 states. California's was the highest at 2.8 percent. There also were large increases in some racial and ethnic groups. The highest rate, about 2.8 percent, was among Hispanic children. 2.8%。 Experts say severe obesity at a very early age is nearly irreversible – meaning the damage is nearly impossible to undo. Severe obesity is strongly linked with health problems and an early death. It is not clear why the increase occurred, Blanck said. When WIC obesity rates dropped, some experts suggested 2009 policy changes might be responsible. Those changes took out juice from infant food packages, provided less saturated fat, and tried to make it easier for people to buy fruits and vegetables. The package has not changed. But “the daily hardships that families living in poverty are facing may be harder today than they were 10 years ago, and the slight increases in the WIC package just weren't enough,” said Dr. Sarah Armstrong, a Duke University childhood obesity researcher. 。 The researchers faced difficulties. The number of kids in WIC declined in the past ten years. And the study included 2020, the year the COVID-19 pandemic hit. At the time, fewer parents brought their children in to see doctors. That reduced the amount of complete information available. Despite its limitations, it was a “very well done study,” said Deanna Hoelscher, a childhood obesity researcher at the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health. She added, “It gives you a hint of what's going on.” What has happened since 2020 is not yet known. Some small studies have suggested an increase in childhood obesity — especially during the pandemic. During the pandemic, kids were kept home from schools. Their eating and bedtime schedules were changed and physical activity decreased. “We are thinking it's going to get worse,” Hoelscher said.“我们认为情况会变得更糟,”霍尔舍说。

For more information, resources, transcripts visit http://disabilityrightstoday.org/episodes/episode-8/ On March 21, 2023, the United States Supreme Court in Perez v. Sturgis Public Schools unanimously decided that individuals who have entered into a settlement resolving their claims under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), can also pursue claims for money damages against school districts under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) without exhausting the administrative process under IDEA. This decision reverses a decision made by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. Our guest is Ellen Saideman, a Rhode Island attorney who focuses much of her practice on the educational rights of students with disabilities and their families. In Perez v. Sturgis Public Schools, Ms. Saideman represented Mr. Miguel Luna Perez, a Deaf student, in his 6th Circuit Court of Appeals case against the Sturgis Public School system in Michigan. Our host for this podcast is Dr. Peter Blanck, Chairman of the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University. Ms. Saideman and Dr. Blanck discuss how the Court's decision in Perez v. Sturgis Public Schools will affect the rights of students with disabilities under the ADA and IDEA. They will also explain how a similar U.S. Supreme Court case in 2017, Fry v. Napoleon Community Schools, paved the way for the Perez v. Sturgis decision.

He then had the opportunity to serve at Walter Reed and was an integral faculty member in the early years of the Uniformed Services University rising to the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. He discusses the importance of USUHS and how it develops doctors prepared to serve in the military. After serving as the Chief of Medicine at Brooke Army Medical center he was then sent to Berlin to be the commander of Berlin Army Hospital and discusses what it was like interacting with the Soviets and his trips to East Berlin. Shortly after serving in Europe he became the commander of Walter Reed and ended his career as the Surgeon General of the US Army and Chief of the U.S. Army Medical Corps. We discuss many of the opportunities and tribulations he experienced while at Walter Reed and later serving at the Pentagon including how he helped shape the DoD's response to Anthrax threats.

He is a busy DJ who runs his own intimate underground party Simple back home but is just as used to sweating it out in the Sankeys Basement or playing Privilege Ibiza. In the wake of the highly public Derek Chauvin trial, people seem to be curious about the guilty verdicts of both murder and manslaughter. How are they different and when is it appropriate to charge one, the other, or both? Having discussed murder in several previous cases, we focus on manslaughter in this episode.Shortly after 4:45 pm on March 25, 1911, a fire ignited on the 8th floor of the Asch Building in downtown New York City. The 8th, 9th and 10th floors belonged to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris. The fire claimed the lives of 146 people in the approximately 18 minutes of the blaze, and the fire marshal's investigation revealed that the door to the stairwell on the 9th floor was locked from the outside. The fire escape collapsed and the elevator stopped working trapping the workers inside as the fire crept towards them.Harris and Blanck were charged with manslaughter in one of the largest profile cases for unintentionally causing death in the nation's history. In this episode, Paul breaks down the different types of manslaughter charges, and how they differ from murder. He also explains the different types of sentencing that can be imposed and how double jeopardy works. Please enjoy, and if you like the show, subscribe!
