In this episode of Crime with a K, we look into the heartbreaking and complex case of Susan Smith, a woman whose desperate lies led to one of the most devastating crimes in American history. Mike Cox's name is synonymous with Texas crime reporting. Cox spent decades covering grisly crimes, working as a police beat reporter and later as the Chief of Media Relations for the Texas Department of Public Safety and authoring books about the Texas Rangers. His latest book, Getting Away with Murder: Learning from Dateline and Other True Crime Shows, blends his sharp wit with his vast experience in law enforcement, offering readers a tongue-in-cheek take on crime and the often bizarre ways criminals get caught. As an enterprising police beat reporter for the Austin American Statesman, Mike broke the story about serial killer Henry Lee Lucas' courtroom confession to 100 murders. Mike extensively interviewed Lucas in jail and wrote the definitive book about the case, The Confessions of Henry Lee Lucas. During our interview, Cox reflects on his lifelong immersion in storytelling, his family's deep connection to journalism, and how true crime shows like Dateline rekindled his passion for the subject. In today's True Crime Tuesday episode of Love and Murder, we delve into a case that proves life can be stranger than fiction. Corey Martin and Adelle Anderson, a pair that believed they could outsmart the law by taking cues from true crime shows, find themselves ensnared in their own web of deceit and murder. On a seemingly peaceful morning in Brooklyn's Canarsie Park, the discovery of 26-year-old Brandy Odom's dismembered body shatters the tranquility of the neighborhood. As we unravel the case, we learn of the twisted motives behind the murder and the investigation takes a bizarre turn when we uncover the perpetrators' method: studying true crime shows to perfect their crime.Join me as I reveiw the trial, the testimonies, and the shocking revelations that expose a tale of greed, betrayal, and a murder that was anything but perfect. And as we reflect on this case, we ask ourselves: Can the consumption of true crime content ever cross a line? Can you think of a fitting punishment for a crime so grotesquely calculated? Let me know your verdict.*************************************************************************************************

True crime is one Hollywood's most successful genres. Recently, Netflix aired a 10-part series about Jeffery Dahmer, the Milwaukee serial killer, and it was a huge hit. But the sister of one of Dahmer's victim's said it's sad that the producers are making money off of the tragic events that happened more than three decades ago. This week, Austin and Phil put on the fedoras and trenchcoats, pick up their tommy guns, and set out into the ultra violent gang war that is podcasting. They play both sides of the battle, pitting True Crime Shows against Hot Take Comedian Shows in an attempt to come out on top of the charts... as if that mattered. Somewhere in the middle of all this, they found time to watch the Coen Brothers 1990 neo-noir film Miller's Crossing. The guys talk about the language of the film, the odd morality of the characters, and their reactions to the film's gay hitman character in context of the film's setting and the time it was made. Also, the guys saw Blade Runner on the big screen! In this ep, we’re back with two cases that will make you feel extra sleuthy…because they’re both unsolved! That’s right. Today we’re covering cold cases. You ever hear of the Crewe murders in 1970? Us either until Kristin told us all about it. Jeanette and Harvey Crewe were married with a little girl named Rochelle. Their happy family life didn’t last long enough because the couple were murdered and the case is unsolved to this day. Of course we have a theory or two. This week Amy talks about the unsolved murder of Dorothy Jane Scott, a single mother with a loving family and supportive friends, but when a stalker starts following her every move, calling her with threats, and leaving dead flowers for gifts, Dorothy and her family become alarmed. In today's episode, we explore women who kill, so hold onto your stretchy pants. Things are about to get crazy!First up is Kristin's case: In the early 1900’s, Louisiana and Texas was plagued by ax murders that swept across the states. Initially, a man named Raymond Barnabet was arrested for the murders, but while he was in jail more murders occurred. Police soon were hot on the trail of his 19-year-old daughter Clementine Barnabet. Was she working alone? Did she have accomplices? Clementine was sentenced to life in prison for the murders, but was eventually let go. The rest of her life was a mystery and so many questions still remain regarding the ax murders that wiped out entire African American families in the south at that time. This week Amy dives into the case involving, then, 18 year old, Christa Pike, who was furious over the possibility that someone else might be interested in her boyfriend. Jealous and feeling mean, Christa invites this unsuspecting girl to join them to smoke some pot and make amends, except that was the last thing Christa was wanting to do. Instead she beat this helpless woman, Colleen Slemmer, to death, leaving her unrecognizable.

Prepare to get wet this week as Amy & Kristin cover true crime cases that happen on the ocean. Amy's case: After the happily married Thomas and Jackie Hawks lived a life of vacation for three years, they got news that inspired big changes in their lives. They were grandparents. The Hawkses decided it was time to dock their beloved yacht, the Well Deserved, just one last time. Shortly after placing an ad in a boating magazine, they found interest from a 25 year old with a family of his own, who was anything, but honest. In this episode, Kristin admits to being a fish murderer. Amy's hubby is finally back in town! And the girls discuss the crazy shit that happens in the state of Florida. Amy's case talks about the Doogie Howser wannabe, Malachi 'Doctor Love' Robinson who from the age of 17 had been interested in the medical field and treating patients even without the proper licensing or education, but thanks to the internet and $29.99 later, he was able to fool and scam many people all up until he treated his last patient in 2017. Kristin's case brings her down to sunny Miami, Florida, which was the cocaine capital in the 70's and 80's, and there was no one more infamous for trafficking that white powdery substance than Griselda Blanco. Griselda was an entrepreneur, but also a cold blooded murderer, and it's hypothesized she killed at least 40, if not over 200.Got a story suggestion or story of your own you'd like to share?
