Thank you for listening to the show! WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Why the 12 week year is an execution system and how that helps you get more done in less time. It's not enough to know.  You have to execute.  Knowledge is only powerful if you act on it. Get out of the annual environment.  With this program, you are going to stop after 12 weeks and that is your year.  Measure your success or failure and measure the progress and then go again.  It's a fluid process.  You can use  this professionally or personally.  You can do  anything for 12 weeks and then decide is that somethingI want to do again. Your vision is you're why.   Your goals NEED to align with the vision. At the goal level, know the difference between goals and tactics and outcomes and actions.  The actions we have control over.  Goals are outcomes.  Make sure at the goal level that is measurable – it's an outcome. Determine what are the most important actions.  Most plans are conceptual not tactical.  You need to spell out the specific actions and focus on “less is more”. Stay connected to your vision by putting the longer term vision in front of you – laminate a card you can look at every day. Create visual reminders. The difference between a habit and routine is key.   Ex, going to the gym is a routine not a habit and routines are what drive success.  How you begin and end your day needs a routine.  The key is to start off positive.   End your day with gratitude.    How to manage time.  Time blocking – 3 core blocks: A. Strategic Block -3 hours blocked during the week.  No interruptions – working on the business not in the business. THIS CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE.  B. Buffer Blocks – these are designed to deal with the emails/low level stuff.  Ex, I return calls between 4-5pm.  Don't check your emails when they come in. Block time in to address it. C. Break out blocks – schedule time away from work to do something just for you to recharge.     The Four Disciplines of the 12 Week Year  Vision – You have to know what you want. Episode #470:  How to Visualize and Manifest Your Best Life Today I want to talk to you about Vision…   You might be wondering why I talk so much about Vision… you best life starts with vision it's on ongoing process, not just a one time event if you are like me, you need to clarify even more so I want to share some thoughts on vision I came across an great article on Lifehack.org great website to reference for thoughts, ideas, strategies I want you to take notes then, sit down for 10 min and execute on your thoughts   How to Create a Vision for Your Life Think of your vision like the compass for your life… You MUST spend time CONSISTENTLY mapping out your life Clarity will come with time and time will require clarity of your vision   Why You Need a Vision… without direction you will not end up where you want to go experts agree that you will accomplish more with a vision your life satisfaction and personal happiness will increase (think about that) if you don't create a vision, you will live someone else's vision (unhappiness)   How to Create Your Life Vision… Understand it will take consistency, patience and time to create clarity Vision will require writing down thoughts, reflection and visualization The key is to create vivid, clear, and distinct and purposeful components of your vision   What Do You Want? So let's start with the question…What do you Want? Question sounds simple but it's not.  Think about it. I ask people all the time what they want and the answers don't come quickly…Why? “A life of fulfillment doesn't happen by chance…it happens by design” It's helpful to ask questions…thoughts and direction come from questions. Personal, Professional, Relationships, Finances, Lifestyle   (Tips to remember) Why do you want certain things? Focus on what you want not what you don't want. Dream a little. Don't be afraid to reach for the stars. create a vision board, write in a journal, open a note on your phone.   (Questions to get you thinking) What really matters to you in life? Not what should matter, what does matter. What would you like to have more of in your life? Set aside money for a moment; what do you want in your career? What are your secret passions and dreams? What would bring more joy and happiness into your life? What do you want your relationships to be like? What qualities would you like to develop? What are your values? What issues do you care about? What are your talents? What's special about you? What would you most like to accomplish? What legacy would you like to leave behind? Most Importantly….What do you want your life to be like?   What Would Your Best Life Look Like?   I love the exercise of describing your best life in detail. What would your perfect day look like.  Break down the details. Think about what life would be like 5, 10, 20 years from now. Visualization is the key to manifesting in your life.   (Questions to get you thinking) What will you have accomplished already? How will you feel about yourself? What kind of people are in your life? How do you feel about them? What does your ideal day look like? Where are you? Where do you live? Think specifics, what city, state, or country, type of community, house or an apartment, style and atmosphere. What would you be doing? Are you with another person, a group of people, or are you by yourself? How are you dressed? What's your state of mind? Happy or sad? Contented or frustrated? What does your physical body look like? How do you feel about that? Does your best life make you smile and make your heart sing? If it doesn't, dig deeper, dream bigger.   Take some time to sit down and write, reflect, and dedicate time to this exercise. You are worth it, but you only deserve it if you are willing to work at it.   I'm sure many of you have read or heard of the book Think and Grow Rich.  One of the best selling books of all time.  100M copies sold over 80 years. Whether you've read the book or not, it might help you to remember that the title is…   THINK and Grow rich….meaning….thinking is a requirement of success and happiness. Don't wait for your future to be created.  Take responsibility and create your vision. It's never too late to start living the life you were meant to life But, you must start by taking time to create and visualize the life you want to live.   Thanks for tuning in today. He worked his way up with an untraditional resume. He worked his ass off." "He had this industrious nature and worked so hard." Giving the commencement speech at the University of Wisconsin "Our words (as leaders) matter." "None of life experiences went according to plan. And that's okay..." Being the point man -- It means, “When you walked a patrol, you walked first. If there was a landmine or booby trap in the road, you would be the first man to step on it. Initially, you walked in perpetual fear… There were intersections you had to cross where you would close your eyes and clench your teeth, but you never stopped pressing on.” "Leadership is about love. You need to have a deep understanding of WHO your team is as people. Always think, 'how can I help them?' When they know they're loved by you, they'll feel safe. When they feel safe, that leads to courage." Clay Hunt -- "We went to sniper school together... He was a good Marine. When I got paired up with him, I was told, 'you are nothing without this partner.'" He didn’t kill himself because of what happened to him in Iraq and Afghanistan. He killed himself because of what he lost when he came home: Purpose, Self-Worth, and Community. Since 2012, more service members have died by suicide than in combat. "Purpose is a universal human need." The Acceptance of Risk: In Blackjack, there is a correct move for every interaction. When you have 16 and the dealer has a face card, you should hit. There is a 32% chance you win if you hit. There is a 26% chance you win if you stay. And yet, people stay. They haven't come to grips with the risk. They'd rather sit back and try not to lose instead of taking the correct step. As a leader, you have to accept the risk, understand it, and press on. The WHO -- "Surround yourself with realists who offer you candid feedback." What does Jake look for when hiring a leader? Diskin began his real estate career in 2010 at 18 years old, but really it started even earlier than that. He has had a passion for real estate while growing up and all it can do for a person's life. While gaining his degree he spent extensive time gaining real estate investing knowledge. He earned his Managing Brokers license where he managed and oversaw the firm for 1.5 years. In 2019, he was selected as one of Realtor Magazine's 30 Under 30 agents in the Country. That's the power of a  plan!    3 questions to ask yourself to have the best 90 days ever:   What do I want to create in the future? What  3 things do I want to make happen this year? What do I need to do in the next 90 days to make my annual goals happen?   Vision: You have to know where you are going. What you want to create in the future.  Where you want to be in 5-10 years. Annual plan. 3 goals you want to complete and when you are going to focus on those goals. Short and sweet. Not long . Bit picture. Don't worry about how we will get to those later. 90-day plan. Now that you know your vision. and where you want to go and what you want to get done over this next year. We can break it down and focus on the next 90 days. what's the focus for 30 days, what's the focus for 60 days, what's the focus for 90 days.

People’s individual visions need to meld into one larger vision through discipline and tenacity.   How Can People Acquire High Performing Traits and Put them in Action (15:50) Watch and learn from others who are good examples (16:00) Congratulate others when they do well (16:10) Vision is a combined effort you have to work toward (16:25) Use discipline to create a good plan (16:45) Tenacity enables you to get through a plan and show up over and over (16:50) Teams don’t fail, they go flat (17:04)   Barriers to Implementing High Performing Traits and Creating Strong Teams (17:21) Adversity plays a role, losing people whether from poor performance or illness and death on your team can lower morale You have to have an obligation to one another to keep each other on track and to help each other push through difficult events as a team Teams who gel together well and go through adversity together are more likely to be strong and high performing   The Biggest Challenge Kent Has Ever Faced (20:55) Personally, when Kent was 15 he had a swimming accident and broke his neck.  After the surgery he had nine-months of recovery and he had to wear a neck brace that made him look like a geek in high school.  This experience taught him patience, self-control, and tenacity.  He “grew a thick skin” from the teasing he received.   Professionally, in Qatar he had to work in a foreign desert culture with people he never met.  He brought his American opinions and swaggered into the project and he had a hard time fitting into the business and social cultures.  He used the patience and tenacity he learned when he was a teenager to successfully get through the project.   The Best Advice Kent Has Ever Gotten (23:28) Be yourself, everyone else is already taken – Oscar Wilde.  Ken has had several mentors. He is a licensed civil engineer who has won several awards and is one of the leaders in the world on autonomous vehicles. Randy's Leadership Journey Randy was hired by CalTrans in the early ’80s as an entry level civil engineer after college. He left 27 years later as the director of the department. His time spent at CalTrans helped prepare him for success as Executive Director of Contra Costa Transportation Authority. Strengths As A Leader At CCTA, they employ great people by spending a lot of time in the hiring process. They look for people with the entrepreneurial spirit, who are able to deal with change and risk-taking. Randy thinks his greatest strength in his current role is that he is a good motivator; he sets standards for employees on how to make decisions that will make the company better partners providing exceptional customer service. Another strength is the very diverse group of people that they have employed who provide many different perspectives. Randy sets the end goal, but the employees ultimately decide how to get there. At CCTA, there are about 20 employees that manage multi-million dollar projects and programs. The greatest strengths of Randy and CCTA are the people and motivation. These strengths help create an environment and culture of innovation. In particular, the leader needs to be able to lead more with motivation rather than by trying to do everything themselves. It is important for leaders to step back and let go, allowing members of the team to figure out how to do business in different ways (it doesn’t always have to be done the way the leader has done it). Importance of Vision You need to be able to articulate to your team what the vision of the company is in order to lead them on the right path. The vision of CCTA is to be the best transportation agency and the team really believes in this vision which improves performance and opens up the conversation about change. They spend a lot of time making sure their team understands the vision and where they are headed as an agency. Leadership Pitfalls to Avoid The main issue with leaders is when they aren’t willing to take risks. If you aren’t willing to take risks, you probably have issues with motivating employees. Employees look up to leaders for guidance, so if their leader doesn’t take risks, the employee will probably not feel as confident in taking risks. Leaders should try to lead by example, which will motivate employees to be better and want to be more like their leader which can end in a better future.  Advice to Live By One of the best pieces of advice Randy had gotten was from his boss, and the advice was basically to think, use your brain, delegate tasks to the team, and look towards the future.
