Tommy Newberry.* (Illinois: Tyndale, 2008), cap. 1.

On this episode of The Lead Up Podcast, Mike is on his own today for episode 308 to share with you why mindset matters and how you can begin to strengthen your mind for success in all areas of leadership and life. Mike is also going to share with us 3 books he highly recommends, three practices you need to implement to create habits around, and three ways you can protect your mindset as you strengthen over time. Mike remembers a rhetorical question asked by a speaker, “Do you want to know what the next year or next five years is going to look like for you?”. As he listened the question became more interesting as he was in a growth period and looking for life's easy button. His answer which stuck with Mike was “Your life one year from now, your life five years from now is going to be exactly like it is right now, unless you change the way you think”. Mike goes on to share his three ideas to shift your mindset. Read good books. Surround yourself with people who think differently than you think and bigger than you think. Invest in a coach. The three books Mike recommends are The 4:8 Principle by Tommy Newberry, a biblically routed mindset book, As A Man Thinketh by James Allen, a small book written in 1902 but the principles are still the same, and finally Mindset by Carol Dweck, which teaches the difference between growth and fixed mindset. After touching on the personal journey he's been on, Mike gives us three tips to sustain our mindset. Get proper rest, without your phone. Today is especially for you if you need more power in your court to fulfill your calling. Life happens. We all have terrible, crappy things that happen in our lives. Do we let those things be a period in our lives or a comma? Commas give you pause, and then you move forward. Periods stop you in your tracks. You get to decide how you view what happens to you. Are you going to pause and learn from that problem and then move forward? Or will you let that thing stop you from doing what God's called you to do? You can decide if that circumstance is a comma in your life or a period. I want you to look at the periods in your life and the events that have held you back. Then ask God to show you how you can turn this issue into a comma, how you can pause, learn and move forward. What do when you feel discouragement, trouble, or hopelessness? Who's there for you when you are going through the muck? Do you need encouragement, but it's not coming? In the Last episode, we talked about how we can encourage others. Today we're talking about one more person that needs encouragement…You. Today is for you if: Your going through hell and back and don't know where to turn. You're hopeless, and no one seems to be there for you. Even if you answered you have no one to help you through the muck, you could still find the encouragement you need. In the Psalms, David showed us how to encourage ourselves. Read Psalm 103:1-5 NASB 1 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name… Notice “O my soul.” David is talking to himself. “Hey soul, pay attention to this”! David is reminding himself of how good God is. We lose heart when we feel like drowning in painful circumstances or treading water in the daily grind. We need to encourage ourselves daily that: Our Heavenly Father is good. Being In Christ can change our lives. What we see is not all there is to life. Here are some ways we can encourage ourselves: 1. Remind When you're in those moments of discouragement, remind yourself of something God has done for you in the past. Here are some Scriptures to remind you how good God is to us. John 3:16 2 Corinthians 5:19 2 Corinthians 5:21 Ephesians 1:6 2. Journal When you experience something wonderful, no matter how small, please write it down then you can go back to it again and again. 3. Music Music fills our souls and lifts our spirits. Most of the Psalms came straight from David, creating music to lift his soul. Find your favorites and put them in playlists for easy access. 4. Read Read the Psalms or the gospels in your Bible. Engaging with the life of Jesus encourages you. Philippians is full of more scriptures on joy, and Paul was in prison when he wrote it. You can also read a book to encourage yourself. Try The 4:8 Principle by Tommy Newberry. It's all about our thought life; by choosing our thoughts, we can experience a state of joy beyond our circumstances. And, hey, you don't have to be down to encourage yourself. You can use encouragement to enjoy your life that much more. Take Action: What is one way you're going to encourage yourself this week? Or, what is another way you like to encourage yourself that you can share with us? Let me give you one way if you need an idea to encourage yourself. It's the gift that keeps on giving. Leading Your Family, Marriage, and Self with Justin Maust   Luke 15:10 (NIV) “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”   Questions and Topics We Discuss: 1. How did the Holy Spirit cultivate the fruit of self-control in you? 2. How have you applied these self- discipline tools to another aspect of your life: intentionally leading your family? 3. Through the many business and leadership principles you've learned, how have you applied those to benefit your marriage?   Justin Maust is an entrepreneur, keynote speaker, Expert EOS Implementer and certified speaker, trainer and coach for the John Maxwell Team. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.”   Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”   Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“   Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“   Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Tommy challenges us to imagine our dream life 30-years from now, and then work on making that dream a reality.  He asks you to consider what would happen if you were unafraid of anything in your life. If that were true what would you do differently right now? And imagine a life where you only dwelled on the positive and negativity was by appointment only. Finally we discussed a lot about parenting and the importance of preparing your kids to deal with adversity. And to say, “This is great!” When they have a struggle they need to overcome. Tommy explains how his niche is working with people who are entrepreneurial in mindset, who are leaders, and who want to reach the next level financially but refuse to do it if it requires compromising their faith, family, or health. Mike and Tommy discuss the system Tommy has created, aimed to help entrepreneurs get from where they are now to where they want to go with predictability. They also speak about Tommy's book, The 4:8 Principle. Tommy shares how he began writing the book 18 months prior to it being released. He explains the ideology behind the book as being a guide to help people realize that they can take command of their thinking and that when they do they take control over the rest of their life. Tommy states that the five practical questions he has created to help people achieve this are: What am I grateful for What are my recent victories What are my strengths What am I looking forward to and excited about In what ways can I increase my service and value to others Tommy mentions how you can take any of these five questions and give them a time frame or quantity. Mike suggests you don't even need to create more time in your day to complete these questions, you can answer them while you're in the shower or at the gym. Mike asks Tommy about how his book and the principles he teaches within his writing help someone who needs to focus on their well-being and how people can use the knowledge provided In the book to replenish the mind. They also talk about the increase in self-image issues and how it impacts people's daily lives. Tommy speaks about taking control of your mindset and how your brain is the hardware and your mind is the software full of a collection of beliefs and expectations we have created for ourselves. No wonder you and I seem to be in a constant state of dealing with damaging “thought worms!”I love the way Tommy Newberry puts it in his book, The 4:8 Principle.“The secret conversations you hold in the privacy of your own mind are shaping your destiny, little by little. With every thought that races through your mind, you are continually reinventing yourself and your future. This is either good or bad news because every thought moves you either toward your God-given potential or away from it. No thoughts are neutral.”If you want to see a significant shift in old habits, change your thoughts and change your life, give these tools a try.Tip # 1 – Supervise your self-talk.Tip # 2 Stop comparing yourself to others.Tip # 3 – Stretch your limiting beliefs.Tip # 4 – Build up others. Here is the link to the article.

Can you think of a time in your life where your peace and joy were more under attack? Everywhere we turn, we're faced with more chaos. While the media feeds on our innate desire for the negative, God is calling us to begin to think differently. Scripture says that the joy of the Lord is our strength. If we lose our joy, we lose our ability to fight. Maybe the reason some of us fail more often than we should is, we've lost our joy?   On this episode Pastor Randy reminds us that true joy is found in Jesus, and encourages us to choose joy, even in the midst of turmoil.    Resources used/referenced in the message:   'Righteousness, Peace, and Joy' (Ron Kenoly)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5k8TVYJUjgA   'The 4:8 Principle' - Tommy Newberry

This is the start of 30 Days of How to Live an Extraordinary Life. Most of us really do want to live extraordinary lives, but often get caught up comparing our lives to others. Is it wealth that makes one extraordinary? Fame? A high intelligence? Is one only extraordinary if they travel the world or become an award winning athlete, actor or politician? What constitutes extraordinary? How about you? Are you ordinary, or extraordinary? In his book, Success is Not an Accident: Change Your Choices Change Your Life, author Tommy Newberry writes, “If you want to lead an extraordinary life, find out what the ordinary do–and don't do it.”  What are the odds of someone being exactly like you? Scientists estimate that the probability of you being born, exactly as you are with your DNA, personality, intellect, skills, interests and such is about one in 400 trillion. Think about that for a moment. One in 400 trillion! You are already extraordinary, just by being born! Now, stop comparing your life to others and make a choice to grow into your extraordinary existence today. Its not just about wealth, fame, or extraordinary smarts because you are already extraordinary. It’s time for you to BE it! This has been Kelly Orchard’s Apple A Day… Now, go out and be fruitful!

His intention recently expanded from that to now include being responsible for raising healthy livestock and taking care of our land, making it sustainable and renewable for years and generations to come. Charles is the co-author of one of the first cookbooks ever written for paleo recipes, is the co-founder of Atlanta Strength and Conditioning, and is the owner of his own farm, Mayfield Pastures, primarily for providing pastured poultry, pork and beef for his family while building the size and infrastructure to expand his operation and offerings to his local community. Charles is also an avid hunter, gardener, distiller, and BJJ enthusiast. This was a particularly fun interview for me as Charles and I connect on so many things at so many levels. He was an early adopter of CrossFit, he attended the CrossFit Games in 2009, the one in which I competed, he was friends with Robb Wolf before Robb was a known figure, and he co-wrote one of my favorite of all time paleo cookbooks! When I met him at Paleo FX, I was amazed that we hadn't spent more time getting to know one another prior to that time. Charles' farm adventure is incredibly inspiring, considering the fact that he's only been at it for 2 years. After reading and studying the likes of Joel Salatin and regenerative farming, he decided to take action (many of us never get to this part... thinking about an idea for years before doing anything to move forward.) Moving his family from Atlanta to rural Tennessee, he built a regenerative farm with chickens, pigs and cows, and his entire family is reaping the rewards of it today.
