You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and today's episode is such a treat. I get to sit down with my friend, Ash Brandin, educator, researcher, author of the new book, Power On, to talk all things screen time, video games, and what it really means to raise emotionally regulated kids in a digital world. Ash brings so much nuance and compassion to this conversation. We go beyond the usual screen time debates and dig into what screens are doing for our kids, how we can shift power struggles into collaboration, and how regulation-- not restriction is the key. Ash is phenomenal, and I highly recommend following them over on Instagram at the Gamer Educator. They're my go-to for all things screens and their new book Power On is a beautiful roundup of all this information. This episode is for anyone who's ever wondered, is this too much or How do I actually teach balance. Spoiler alert-- it's not about shame or rigid rules. It's about relationship. Send us a textKatie and special guest Julie(!) run blindly through the woods as they re-watch the suspenseful early 2000's movie: The Village! It's a movie all about how if you are fed up with the woes of society, you can just start your own cult in the woods and abandon all modern luxuries - while also simultaneously fear-mongering your children - all while allowing disease and death to kill everyone because you refuse to go get medicine! ......Yeah this feels a little too topical for this day and age! SOMEBODY HELP! Come along as we meet Ivy, a blind woman who decides to go into the woods to get medicine for her newly shanked fiancé, Lucius. When we're led to believe that the evil creatures who spread fear throughout the town also live in the woods and Ivy probably won't make it, her dad gives her (and us the audience) the real talk about the creatures and the town in general. Spoiler alert! It's kinda dumb! With not many surprising twists and turns we instead get a beautifully shot movie that may or may not be a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice! We've got scary woods, "olden times" (lol), and brainwashing galore in not-really-a-horror-movie movie. Released in 2004, it was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan and stars Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody, Brendan Gleeson, and Cherry Jones.

Eric gives the lowdown on some of the latest safety issues, including some serious burn hazards from boilers and power banks. Nothing like a little reminder that safety first, right? Overall, this episode is a wild ride through the ups and downs of home renovations, filled with sarcasm, practical tips, and a reminder that even the best of us can trip over our own toolboxes. Brian HuskeyTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Brian Huskey. You know Brian's face from such iconic shows as Veep, Neighbors, Search Party & Mr. Neighbor's House 1 & 2. You know his voice from mega hits like Bob's Burgers, Beavis and Butt-Head, and Central Park. In this episode, we chat about his path to television & film. Brian started making movies in high school with some friends but didn't really pursue it as a career until college. He shares some of that inspiration and some of the moments that let him know that this was a legitimate career option for him. We touch on some of his early work as a writer, as well as his early days as the bass player for a band called Bicycle Face. (Spoiler alert, he lets me play his favorite track from their album). Next, we talk about getting involved with the Upright Citizens Brigade, Naked Babies improv, comedy, and writing his own projects. Mr. Neighbor's House is one of his favorite projects that he has ever been part of. He created it, wrote it, executive produced it, & starred in it. He did the same a few years later with Mr. Neighbor's House 2. I wouldn't be me if I didn't grill him about his previous podcast called Bald Talk! Naturally we discuss his VH-1 television show Free Radio, some of his earliest acting memories, and his upcoming horror film Thinestra. In this episode of The First Day from The Fundraising School, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D. is joined once again by fundraising researcher and nonprofit rockstar Ruth Hansen, PhD, Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Together, they dive into Ruth's latest co-authored paper, “A Literature Review of Experimental Studies in Fundraising,” which combs through 187 academic studies to answer one burning question: what really works in annual fund fundraising? Spoiler alert, it's not just your gut feeling. This episode is a masterclass in evidence-based philanthropy, breaking down complex research into practical nuggets fundraisers can use right now. Ruth and Bill unpack some truly mind-bending findings, like the fact that donors respond more to percentages than numbers. Five out of ten (50%) feels more impactful than eight out of twenty (40%), even though the latter helps more people. Why? Our brains love shortcuts, and percentages are easier to grasp. They also wade into the murky waters of negative imagery; yes, sad puppy photos do boost one-time gifts, but could turn off donors long-term. This leads to a golden takeaway; fundraisers must balance emotional impact with long-term relationship building. A little “warm glow” goes a long way in keeping donors connected and inspired. Speaking of warm glow, Ruth reminds us that smaller donors often give because it feels good, not just out of pure altruism, and that's okay. In fact, appealing to that emotional satisfaction is a powerful way to start building those donor pipelines. The conversation also busts some long-standing myths around special events. Turns out, there's science behind why folks give more when they're surrounded by others: peer pressure, reputation, and that sweet social buzz all play a part. It's not just networking; it's neuroscience. From social proof in direct mail to gender-matched testimonials, Dr. Hansen and her research offer a toolkit of small tweaks that lead to big results. At the heart of it all? Donors want to know they're making a difference; regardless of income, background, or cause. Ruth sums it up perfectly: fundraisers aren't just talking to people with wallets; they're talking to people with values. So if you're looking to make your annual fund stronger, smarter, and more donor-friendly, this episode is your evidence-based jam.

On this episode, Jason G and I review 'Ballerina', a spinoff set in the 'John Wick' universe between chapters three and four. We praise the film's action, calling it some of the best in the series, with standout scenes, such as a flamethrower sequence. I mention struggling to fully buy Ana de Armas as an action star, while Jason suggests the director's style may emphasize looks over grit. We also note the inclusion of Lance Reddick's character, filmed before his passing, and appreciate how the action feels intense but more grounded compared to other over-the-top set pieces in this universe. We give the movie an overall rating of 7 to 7.8 out of 10. The conversation concludes with thoughts on the box office and franchise. Despite a $90 million budget, the film made about $132 million worldwide, which may not cover total costs. However, it is performing well on VOD platforms. Lionsgate has not confirmed a 'Ballerina' sequel, but 'John Wick 5' is in development with Keanu Reeves returning. Thoughts? Comments? Do so on the blog here. Think you can't buy a home until your debt is gone and your savings are massive? Think again. In this episode, David Sidoni breaks down the real math behind saving for a down payment while managing debt — and why waiting too long could actually cost you more. For first-time homebuyers, the internet is full of misinformation: you need zero debt, a huge down payment, and perfect timing. Wrong. In this episode, David tackles one of the biggest fears holding renters back — how much you actually need to save, and whether it's possible to do that while still carrying debt. Spoiler: it is.Building on Rosie's inspiring story from the last episode (a single mom who bought her first home in 2025 after bankruptcy), David unpacks the myths that scare buyers into renting for far too long. He explains the strategies that let you save and pay down debt at the same time, and why the rising age of first-time buyers — now at a shocking 41 years old — is proof that misinformation is keeping people trapped. If you're stuck renting because you think your debt or small savings disqualify you, this episode is your wake-up call. Homeownership is possible sooner than you think — if you know the facts. Quote: “You don't need a big down payment and no debt. Nope, nope, nope.” Highlights:The myth of needing zero debt before buying a home — busted. How to save for a down payment while paying down debt. Why waiting too long could cost you more in rising prices and rents.Rosie's real-life story: from bankruptcy in 2019 to buying in 2025.The shocking truth: average first-time buyer age has jumped to 41. Owen Milne had the best seat in the house during the recent Code Red swell at Teahupoo, and he nearly paid for it with his life. He gives us the best rundown yet of what it was like to be staring mutant slabs in the eyeball from close quarters. Spoiler alert: it was absolute mayhem. Wipeouts, jet ski near misses, paddling and tow surfing clinics, and Doug Silva getting sucked up the guts of a catamaran and nearly turned into mince meat by twin propellers. Owen's raw account of the swell is one of the better depictions of what goes down at Teahupoo when it's 20+ foot and maxing. You can watch it here.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The film received a massive wave of critical support after its long film festival run, which led to industry recognition, a historic Best Director win for Bigelow, making her the first female winner of the category, and Best Picture itself. The film follows an Iraq War Explosive Ordnance Disposal team who are targeted by insurgents and shows their psychological reactions to the stress of combat. Oscar-winning screenwriter Marc Boal drew on his experience during embedded access to write the screenplay. How does it hold up 16 years later?
