Ever felt guilty for wanting to make good money as a therapist? That's good therapist conditioning at work, and it's probably destroying your practice. Good therapist conditioning is a toxic belief we absorb in grad school, from supervisors and from society that tells us we should sacrifice ourselves for our work. It's that uncomfortable feeling when you talk about money, that guilt when you put yourself first, that fear that other therapists will judge you for wanting financial stability. In today's episode, I'm showing you how to spot good therapist conditioning in your own practice and, more importantly, how to slay it. I'll share real stories from therapists who went from shaking in their boots about raising fees to consistently filling their practices with full-fee clients. We'll talk about why financial health is actually part of your clinical effectiveness and why you don't need anyone's permission to thrive. If you're tired of being overworked, underpaid, and feeling guilty about wanting more, you're in the right place! It's time for you to build a practice that supports your life.Topics covered on Good Therapist Conditioning:Why good therapist conditioning starts in grad school and gets reinforced everywhere you lookThe toxic belief that caring about clients and making good money are mutually exclusiveThe "bad therapist" exercise that will crack open your money blocks immediatelyReal stories of therapists who raised their rates without losing a single clientThe hidden ways good therapist conditioning shows up in your life and businessResources from this episode: Kasia Urbaniak's Book: https://www.kasiaurbaniak.com/unbound-book Liberated Business: www.thebadtherapist.coach/liberatedbusinessThe Fee Formula: www.thebadtherapist.coach/feeformulaConnect with Felicia:Get my freebie & join the email list: The Magic SheetsInstagram: @the_bad_therapistWebsite: www.thebadtherapist.coachFacebook group: Healing MoneyQuote:"Bad therapists know something that other therapists don't. Episode Highlights ✅ Introduction to Lion Taming (00:00:00) Dr. Amy Vertrees introduces the “Lion Taming” master class on power and negotiation. Highlights her coaching program for women surgeons, helping them handle difficult colleagues, power dynamics, and negotiations. Defines BOSS as a suite of coaching and courses teaching crucial career skills often missing from surgical training. ✅ Who (or What) is the Lion? (00:02:08) “Lions” = Anyone who can harm your career, reputation, or confidence—senior colleagues, competitors, even patients. The most dangerous lions are sometimes the most powerless or wounded. Lion taming means: Finding your own power Managing those with power over you Acting despite fear Leading without formal authority ✅ Stress Responses in Conflict (00:05:52) Workplace conflicts trigger strong emotions like anger, fear, shame, or sadness. These emotions often stem from being dismissed, interrupted, or undermined. Four stress responses: Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn. Lion taming often involves recognizing and managing the “fight” response. Lesson from Androcles & the Lion: understanding and soothing the “lion's pain” can transform conflict into cooperation. ✅ New Approaches to Negotiation (00:12:15) Avoid using: The “Hammer” (intimidation) The “Armor” (withholding vulnerability) Instead, aim for: Honesty Genuine curiosity Emotional intelligence Insights from Kasia Urbaniak's “Woman's Guide to Power Unbound”: Dominance: Knowing and using your power Submission: Knowing what you want and influencing others to give it to you ✅ Self-Discovery & Managing Lions (00:16:35) Crucial steps for effective negotiation: Know your strengths and weaknesses Understand what you truly want Believe in your capacity to achieve it Reduce the lion's perceived threat by envisioning the best version of them. Negotiation isn't purely logical—it's driven by emotion and the sense of safety. ✅ Three Steps to Tame a Lion (00:25:20) Anchor: Create safety and stability within yourself. Align: Shift attention outward to engage strategically. Ask: Make a clear, powerful request. Recognize where your attention is: Inward focus = Submission Outward focus = Dominance ✅ Power is Not a Threat—It's a Tool (00:35:55) Power exists to influence, not intimidate. Dr. Vertrees encourages listeners to use their power for positive change. Power Negotiations course topics include: Identifying your needs Reading others' needs Practical negotiation techniques Surviving high-stakes conversations The “CEO Self-Concept”: Think of yourself as your own business, making choices aligned with your mission and values. ✅ Coaching Program Details (00:41:33) Weekly live sessions Private podcast + Facebook group Email support Discounted 1:1 coaching calls Dr. Vertrees encourages potential clients to discuss fit before joining. Today we are revisiting another great conversation, continuing our Love and Relationships series.Listen in as Michaela Boehm and I continue to discuss one of my absolute favorite topics: relationships. Michaela has given Slo Mo one of my favorite takes yet on the perpetually interesting and controversial topic of human sexuality and intimacy. (See my interviews with Dr. Robert Glover, Alain de Botton, and Kasia Urbaniak for some other fascinating takes). Michaela travels and teaches internationally as an expert in intimacy, relationship and sexuality. Her unique body of work centers around the intersection of intimacy and embodiment. With over 30,000 hours of in-person counseling, clinical experience in trauma and addiction and innovative somatic approach, her work with celebrities (Will Smith, Gwyneth Paltrow, etc.) has been featured in international print publications, TV programs and online talk shows. Most recently her approach has been featured on the Netflix Series [UN] WELL, which is how I first saw her and decided I had to reach out. Michaela is the creator of The Non-Linear Movement Method, and her book The Wild Woman's Way  was published in 2018.Listen as we discuss:What is intimacy? The meaning of embodiment, the ability to hear and feel the messages of the bodyHow intimacy with yourself is the fundamental step before intimacy with othersIs it normal to lose the spark in your relationship? I'm joined by Andrea Scher, author of Wonder Seeker: 52 Ways to Wake up Your Creativity and Find Your Joy, to talk about how to fill up your creative well when its run dry..  We talk about the power of mixing up your routines to try something new – going for a walk and finding a new plant, taking pictures, going to a new restaurant – as a way of sparking creativity and finding desire.  Our brains react in fear to trying new things, to hanging out in the liminal space of venturing into the unknown, but it's when we put ourselves in those spaces that we grow.  We also talk about how the pressure to monetize our creativity keeps us stuck not creating. Instead, what would it look like if you created without the expectation of making money, or “being creative”, or even getting better at what you create? What would it look like if you created for creativity's sake?  Listen to the episode to learn:  How to seek wonder in your everyday life How to find ambition and creativity as you age Why just being there in life is enough How to bother when it seems like your life is falling apart What Andrea and I's superpowers are  Check out these resources:  Andrea's podcast The Creative Superheroes, and look for me in a recent episode!  Andrea's book Wonder Seeker: 52 Ways to Wake up Your Creativity and Find Your Joy - Get your copy here: Amazon | Bookshop Unbound by Kasia Urbaniak

Anna Sparks returns for another great conversation exploring the book we read: Unbound, A Woman's Guide to Power by Kasia Urbaniak.Unbound is described as, "The ultimate guide to owning your power – and mastering how to use it.  Part manual, part manifesto for a woman of the pivot, Unbound  is a how-to guide to the impossible, the outrageous, the unimaginable--a field guide to living your wildest, best, and most satisfying life." - www.kasiaurbaniak.comThis book!  It has revolutionized my life and relationships!  I had to read it three times in a row to take it in, swirl it around, test it out, and ultimately deeply appreciate all I'd learned and how it was impacting my relationships.  Anna is the founder of Granada Group which provides leadership coaching and consulting and coaching services based on transparent, authentic partnerships and an avid reader who could talk about books all day long.Connect with Anna:WebsiteLinkedInResources:"Leadership That Gets Results", Harvard Business ReviewBrene Brown's term Vulnerability Hangover, Psychology Todaywww.makelifelessdifficult.com

In the episode, Kasia shares about how to break free from good girl conditioning. In her words "We need bad girls, women who ruffle feathers, shake people up." And this blew me away - when we ask for what we truly want no matter how crazy, it doesn't just benefit self or child, it benefits all of society" We talk about how to give and receive “no” and she goes in-depth on the familiar feeling for many mums, resentment. How suppressing it is the equivalent of a suicide bomber, a bit dramatic but rings true. When it finally explodes, it impacts ourselves and those around us. Her clarity around this and tools she offers for turning it around resonated strongly with me. What I really loved about speaking with Kasia on top of the entire conversation, are the simple actionable tools she shares. If you are like me and feel the world needs woman who are self-directed, strong and acting in their own best interests and not just everyone else's, this episode will leave you feeling understood, inspired and empowered. Trust me, Kasia is electrifying. She is on a mission to liberate woman from the shackles of good girl conditioning. I hope you find it helpful. Emily Trinkaus and I recorded this episode on the Sagittarius Solar Eclipse of December 4th (find the chart here), the last of 2021, and the last on the Gemini-Sagittarius axis for another decade. We covered as much of the current cosmic weather as we had time for, starting with the Eclipse itself and how to work with it, and the themes of all six eclipses along the Gemini-Sagittarius axis of the past year and a half. We'll be doing another podcast episode in January to talk about the changes in the new year! Kristine mentioned her upcoming class "Twelve Seasons: The Signs of the Zodiac" on December 10th as well as her deep dive into "The Beauty of Venus" on December 15th, just in time for the Venus retrograde. You can purchase Emily's recorded insights into today's Solar Eclipse; her webinar all about the powerful Venus retrograde in Capricorn beginning December 26th; or her recorded class on the major tension-producing astrology of the year, the Saturn-Uranus square, which goes exact for the third and final time on December 24th. In this immensely engaging conversation, I'm talking with Kasia Urbaniak, the founder and CEO of The Academy - A School of Power for Women, and author of the book Unbound: A Woman's Guide To Power. Kasia brings a truly unique approach to her work, which is teaching women the foundations of power and influence and is supporting them to step into leadership positions in their relationships, families, workplaces and wider communities. Over the course of nearly 20 years, she has worked as professional Dominatrix, practiced Taoist alchemy in one of the oldest female-led monasteries in China and obtained dozens of certifications in different disciplines, including Medical Qi Gong and Systemic Constellations. In this episode Kasia reveals some of the invisible but significant ways that ‘good girl' conditioning shows up in our life, and how this can lead to so much of a woman's energy going into physical, emotional and energetic labor in a very unconscious way. The result? Often exhaustion, frustration, feeling unseen and unacknowledged and not having rightful time to tend to passion projects and personal goals. We discuss the meaning of power, and Kasia offers very interesting insights into how woman can use their voice to respond to power imbalance and recover their sovereignty and decision making capacities. Along with many other fascinating and exciting explorations, we also talk about the pitfalls of aspiring to be selfless, and how being selfish in a way that feels good actually better equips us to see the positive impacts we desire.
