The crew of the Little Snail, traveling food truck and makeshift HQ for this band of equally makeshift adventurers, has agreed to escort a young priestess named Veile to a mysterious destination. Within days, they met their first obstacle: a group of mischievous Fleggs who've vandalized the Little Snail and sabotaged the way forward… This week on Perpetua: The Shadow of the Dragon Tower Pt. 02 Perpetua Guide [In Progress v.01] NPCs & Monsters [PNMS] Flegg [NMFL] Typical Traits: Mischievous, Anxious, Clever, Family Oriented Stats: DEX 8, INS 8, MIG 8, WLP 8 Attacks: Flegg Strike, Infuriate, Flegg Blast Special Abilities: Final Act: Stoneshell In-Game Description: A living egg. It comes up to your shins. It has a beak!? These guys must be a little different than they were in the demo, because they definitely didn't have the ability to turn into a stone when you killed them in Prelude. I wonder if something happened to them between the game or if the designers just rebalanced them? Anyway, they're a basic enemy type, pretty good for grinding, but don't underestimate how they can overwhelm you in a group. Starter Tip: Even though they're “monsters” you can actually try to use Persuasion on them! Vinnor Jekk (he/him) [NMVJ] Traits: Devoted, Optimistic, Pedantic, Arrogant Stats: ??? Attacks: ??? Spells: ??? In-Game Description: Solivigant of the Way of Fearless Truth who seeks to enact a world-saving prophecy. I can't tell what I think about this guy. Either he's going to betray the party and become a mid-game boss or he's just one of those guys you hate to talk to even though he's technically right about everything. No clue about stats/attacks/spells (because let's be real, this guy DEFINITELY has spells). Starter Tip: Depending on your dialog choices you can get a chance to snoop through his stuff to get more lore.  Chelik, Awakened Dragon Watcher (she/her) [NMCH] Traits: Wise, Focused, Out-of-Her-Time, Melancholy Stats: DEX 6, INS 10, MIG 6, WLP 10 Attacks: Elemental Charge  Spells: Ice Beam, Flame Breath In-Game Description: Recently revived scryer of the Dragon Watchers. I can't stress this enough: Chelik is an optional boss. Unless you have done a bunch of grinding, she's probably out of your range when you first meet her. Yes, you can get some really decent gear if you manage to knock her out, but I think it's probably worth trying to avoid the fight all together (or else use the Persuade command to try to escape it). Starter Tip: If she's using Elemental Charge, that means she's low on MP and you can probably push the advantage a little!   Hosted by Austin Walker (austinwalker.bsky.social) FeaturingAli Acampora (ali-online.bsky.social), Art Martinez-Tebbel (amtebbel.bsky.social), Jack de Quidt (notquitereal.bsky.social), and Andrew Lee Swan (swandre3000.bsky.social) Produced by Ali Acampora Music by Jack de Quidt (available on bandcamp) Cover Art by Ben McEntee (https://linktr.ee/benmce.art) With thanks to Amelia Renee, Arthur B., Aster Maragos, Bill Kaszubski, Cassie Jones, Clark, DB, Daniel Laloggia, Diana Crowley, Edwin Adelsberger, Emrys, Greg Cobb, Ian O'Dea, Ian Urbina, Irina A., Jack Shirai, Jake Strang, Katie Diekhaus, Ken George, Konisforce, Kristina Harris Esq, L Tantivy, Lawson Coleman, Mark Conner, Mike & Ruby, Muna A, Nat Knight, Olive Perry, Quinn Pollock, Robert Lasica, Shawn Drape, Shawn Hall, Summer Rose, TeganEden, Thomas Whitney, Voi, chocoube, deepFlaw, fen, & weakmint This episode was made with support from listeners like you! Apgar was a human anesthesiologist who graduated from medical school in the 1930s, Greer noted. “She was the first female anesthesiologist admitted to the College of Anesthesiology back in an era where there were no women doctors. There were no women a lot of things. So she was truly remarkable, Greer said. “In that era, a lot of babies were born to mothers that were sedated or anesthetized. And so (Apgar) developed a scoring system to analyze the babies and it has stuck for the last 70 years and it's very impressive that it's something that people talk about every day, still using the word APGAR. The acronym stands for: appearance, pulse, grimace, activity and respiration.” The system was adapted for small animal veterinary use by a vet on staff at the University of Minnesota. “The advantage of a numerical score,” Greer added “is that it gives you something that you can measure and compare litter to litter, puppy to puppy within the litter over the course of time. And we have some really good data from Neocare, which we talked about last time, about what the relationship with the APGAR score and the survival of these puppies will be. So it's actually super cool that you can take all this information and turn it into something that you can use at home, you can use at your veterinary clinic, and that your veterinary clinic can help you with. So I would encourage people to learn to do APGAR scores. It's not hard, it's not mysterious. It's really pretty straightforward on what to do with it. “The value of this is when you go home (from a csection, for example) and you have a puppy that had an APGAR score of a four and a puppy that had an APGAR score of a nine, that you know the puppy with the four needs a lot more attention to have the kind of survival rates that one would hope for. We always hope for a hundred percent (survival), but reality is 100% is probably not a realistic goal. “Each of the five parameters, appearance, pulse, grimace, activity and respirations gets a score of a zero, one, or a two. So collectively, if you get twos on all five of your items, you have a score of a ten. “It's really simple to do. It doesn't require high level assessment and like I said, a lot of us probably are intuitively already doing this. When you have puppy born, if it's fish breathing and gasping and gaping, that's not good. But, if it's got nice pink color and it's wailing and it's crying and it's wiggling and it's pink and it's all those things, you know that you've got a puppy that's in pretty good shape. But it's just nice to be able to give it a more numerical sign because that gives you data to work with. “The average puppy is gonna be seven and up. It does give you a numerical score. The value of this is knowing that from the Neocare information, that's from the University at the Toulouse -France Veterinary School, the puppies with an APGAR score of less than seven have a 22-fold increased risk of death in the first eight hours after they're born. “And they also know that puppies with APGAR scores between a four and a seven can achieve a 90 percent survival rate with the appropriate interventions. So, what does that mean? That means you suction them, you put them in oxygen, you make sure that they're staying warm. You're doing all those things that you already have been trained to do to help with puppy resuscitation so that they're not just you know laying in the whelping box kind of hoping that they do okay.” Greer's seminal book "Canine Reproduction and Neonatology" is available

How close are we to a scalable quantum computer? How do they work? Why is it so difficult for women in science? Is that changing? In this episode we have the fascinating new technology of Quantum Computers to get our heads around. They've been in the news a lot recently for the extraordinary computing power they could offer if harnessed properly; and also in conjunction with misleadingly named ‘teleportation' technologies that can encode information in a quantum key and have it appear at the destination almost instantaneously and unshackably using quantum entanglement. But how do they work? Our guest today Shohini Ghose explains beautifully, she studies them as a professor of Quantum Physics at the Wilfrid Laurier University in Toronto, Canada. She is also a Senior Fellow at TED and her TED talk, ‘A beginners guide to Quantum Computers' has been viewed almost 5 million times. She's a passionate advocate for women in science which she's just released a new book on, ‘Her Space, Her Time' and which we'll be getting into around the 45min mark, and she's the Chair for women in Science at the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. She is also the author of the 2019 book ‘Clues to the cosmos'. I couldn't let such a brilliant since communicator get away without asking her what the measurement problem means for the nature of reality too. Fascinating stuff! 5 Cs of History: Complexity, #2 of 4. Josephine Baker's life story - both what we know and what we don't/can't know - is fascinating. For our purposes today, her life story is a perfect case study for complexity in historical thinking. Not only was she an icon of contradictions, but the way she lived and interacted with the world has allowed historians and feminist scholars to really tease out the complexity of her lifetime. Josephine Baker lived from 1906 until 1975. She was both a Civil Rights activist and a performer who used blackface and racialized tropes to entertain. She was both a woman who had intimate (probably sexual) relationships with other women, and exiled an adopted son when he came out to her as gay. She was both a deeply private woman and opened her home to the public like an amusement park. And for most of her life she lived in France, which was both deeply enamored with Black American culture and music and deeply racist. As Josephine Baker shows us, historical moments, like life stories, are rarely simple. This episode features Nadia Jagessar of Indian Matchmaking. She talks about dating, her experience as an immigrant and a southeast Asian millennial, cultural identity and how it affected her life. Getting to know Nadia Jagessar [3:10] “ It took me after college to realize how my story is unique, I am unique, and that it was a benefit for me growing up. I just saw myself as being different from others.” The Indian Matchmaking Opportunity [5:06] “I've got nothing to lose, and I've tried so many forms of dating. I did it, and 6 months later, that was it.” What She Learned from Her Time on Indian Matchmaking [11:04] “Some things are done purposefully. I needed to have those happen. It's learning that I need to put my foot down and stand up for myself.” Situationships and Relationships [16:33] “When is this going to work? When is someone going to stick? But you know, it's always redirecting you to a more aligned person of you.” Dating Before Indian Matchmaking and After [20:40] “I went into situations with really low expectations because I get disappointed easily when things don't work out how I beautifully painted them in my head. Going on dates now, I'm careful on what I'm sharing.” Dealing with and Addressing Intimidations [31:03] “It's making me feel things that I don't want to feel and I want to talk about it.” “Sometimes we get so fearful of speaking what's on our mind and being vulnerable because they're going to think something about us and leave us.” Nadia's Culture - Growing Up and More [38:14] “People were coming from different parts of the world and it was a melting pot. It was great to have that. But I never really shared much that I did Indian dancing. It was until after college that I realized that everything was wonderful.” Parents' Take on Doing the Show [46:49] “I am super grateful for parents who are incredibly supportive of whatever I bring to the table. They've never pushed the idea of arranged marriage. They're very supportive.” Passion Projects [51:00] “What am I going to bring to the table? Is a wonderful opportunity to be able to share your message.”  Follow Nadia on Instagram @nadiajagessar Please download, rate & review this episode and share it with friends!  Links/Resources: Courses & Coaching Kelly's Favorites Follow Me on Instagram Join the ChaseLife with Kelly Community! Are you really a highly conscious entrepreneur? In my opinion, after 10 years of hosting the Business Elevation Show, I believe that the average quality of consciousness of the world's entrepreneurs and business leaders must elevate in order to build organizations that solve the world's problems not add to them. This requires being fully open to self development in order to realise the full potential of the people within them. My guest Judy Piatkus founded her independent publishing company Piatkus Books from her London home in the 1980's, and grew it into one of the world's leading independent book publishing companies. Piatkus Books became known as a pioneer of new ideas in personal development and alternative health. In 2009 the Times of London described Judy as ‘one of the world's leading thinkers'. Her memoir ‘Ahead of Her Time' was published April 2020. Join us to learn how Judy elevated the consciousness of her employees and readers leading to exceptional results.   One of the toughest and most important choices for a leader is to look within and do the deep work to heal the echoes of trauma. By looking and healing our past, they lighten the load of their burdens so they can lead themselves—and others—better.   On the contrary, right now, we are watching in real time the dangers of leaders who are not in touch with their humanity and lead with pain, bullying, and fear. We are breathing in so much toxicity right now and it is taking a toll on all of us.   And even still, I'm struck by how those leaders who have done the work to heal the echoes of their trauma are navigating 2020. I am noticing fatigue, for sure. But I am seeing something else...   The resilience and tenderness I am seeing in these leaders is inspiring me: they are navigating these echoes imperfectly but with an ownership and confidence grounded in their inherent worthiness and value—less encumbered by seeking value and safety externally.   However, the echoes of trauma from domestic and intimate partner violence are particularly insidious—creeping into day-to-day decisions in ways that are often hard to detect but show up in ways that impact confidence and clarity.   My guest today, Former Congresswoman Katie Hill, is a powerhouse in work and life and she is also a survivor of domestic violence. She wasn't yet 30 when she embarked on her run for Congress. By 31, she had become not only a Member of Congress - and one of the youngest women to ever serve in the House of Representatives - but also a member of Congressional Leadership.   Former Congresswoman Hill resigned from her position less than a year after entering Congress, following political sabotage by her abusive ex-husband in a scandal that began a national conversation around questions of bisexuality, domestic abuse, cyber exploitation, workplace power dynamics, and what happens when regular people who live regular lives run for office.   Former Congresswoman Hill is also the author of She Will Rise: Becoming a Warrior in the Battle for True Equality and the founder of Her Time, a political action committee supporting women in politics who are shaping their communities, and the country, for the better.   Please note: This episode will be discussing domestic violence and suicidal ideation. Take care as you listen and pause if you need to. If you or someone you know is struggling with domestic violence and/or thoughts of suicide, please contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at www.thehotline.org or call 800.799.7233 or contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800.273.8255.   Listen to the full episode to hear: Where Katie drew her courage from as she made difficult decisions regarding her career and own personal healing The choices Katie continues to make as she moves forward personally and professionally The phrase Katie thinks that we need to eliminate from our world view to make space for more healing   Learn more about Katie Hill: www.shewillrisebook.com Follow Katie on Instagram   Learn more about Rebecca: rebeccaching.com Work With Rebecca Sign up for the Weekly Rumble Email
