They say those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. As true a statement as it is, it's missing one crucial element. If you never confront the reality of the present and get to the heart of why you are where you are, you won't be able to unlearn the habits that got you there in the first place. In this episode of Unlearn, Barry O'Reilly talks with Dom Price, Work Futurist at Atlassian, who shares insights on facing the reality of the present, unlearning outdated practices, and embracing new ways of working to drive meaningful change and growth in organizations. Dom's early work experience started in London at Deloitte, where he spent three years as an accountant. His job left him unfulfilled and passionless, but that all changed over sushi. Don's boss at Deloitte offered him the opportunity to work in either New York or Sydney. Despite the allure of New York's size and boldness, Dom chose Sydney for its smaller team environment, where he could have a more hands-on, full-stack experience. This decision marked the beginning of a diverse and interesting career journey that eventually led him to Atlassian.Embracing Reality and Unlearning Past PracticesDom highlights the importance of facing the honest reality of the current situation in organizations. When leaders truly acknowledge where they are today, they can pay homage to the past while also identifying areas that need to be unlearned or improved. Not only will this allow those leaders to eliminate what is holding an organization back, it will also shine the light on what is exceptional and should be elevated. Taking this approach will help break away from average practices and strive for continuous improvement.Collaboration Over SilosBarry and Dom discuss the significance of breaking down silos within organizations to foster better collaboration and communication. This begins with recognizing that the entire company runs day to day on the hundreds of small tasks that require input from every team member and department. When collaboration and breaking down silos becomes a priority, a company can enhance its efficiency, productivity, and overall effectiveness. Equally as important, this type of culture honors the diverse perspectives they bring.Seeking Growth and Avoiding PlateausOver time, companies trend toward mediocrity and status quo, but Dom stands firmly against the plateaus that seem inevitable. There is always a place for growth and improvement, and it requires each person involved to challenge themselves, step out of comfort zones, and actively seek new opportunities. Instead of complacency, a mindset of continuous learning, adaptation, and growth will ensure excellence and innovation.Practical Change Initiatives Over Theoretical TransformationsDom discusses the pitfalls of theoretical transformations, such as Agile transformations, that lack a clear understanding of the underlying goals and realities of the organization. Instead, he advocates for practical, action-oriented change initiatives that address specific needs and challenges within the organization. By focusing on tangible outcomes and being honest about real issues, companies can drive sustainable change and meaningful progress.Balancing Heritage and InnovationNot all of a company's past should be unlearned, nor should its achievements be forgotten. There is a balance to strike between an organization's rich heritage and the need for innovation and adaptation. Dom shares how companies can find a balance between honoring the past and embracing innovation, and companies can leverage their heritage while staying relevant and competitive in a rapidly changing environment.ResourcesDominic Price on LinkedIn | Atlassian

Once in a while we sit down with someone that completely blows us away and on TaPod this week that's exactly what happened! We caught up with Dom Price from Atlassian at the HR and L&D Innovation Techfest. Dom is a Work Futurist and TED Speaker and quite simply we could listen to him all day. But in Dom's own words nothing he says holds any value unless you take action. So bolt in for the next 40 minutes, turn the mirror on yourself, ‘remove stuff' and make change… Dom makes it easy.Lauren also admits to being 50% bogan Australian… she was probably being a little conservative. Thanks to RefApp for your brilliant support this month

We had a fun and informative conversation with Danielle Farage, a Work Futurist who leverages technology to bridge the gap between leaders and talent to create more inclusive, equitable and dynamic cultures. We were fascinated not only with Danielle's perspectives on work culture, but also her unique experiences which lead to her core belief that everyone should feel valued, supported and fulfilled in the workplace and beyond. As an older member of Gen Z, Danielle brings people together to talk about fostering an elevated consciousness around the intersection of identity, culture, and workplace. And she was licensed to operate a boat at twelve years old, long before she could drive a car. Talk about making waves at an early age! Sorry about the Dad joke, Danielle. We're Dads, and we just can't help it. Nonetheless, we are so glad you joined us on the show. Thanks, Danielle!
The "future of work" is not in the future - It's already here, so let's start calling it the new era of business and work. Especially coming out of the Pandemic, many leaders struggle with how to adapt to changing work requirements, current business challenges, and different employee needs, motivations and demands.Today, Sophie Wade and I talk about how Millennial and Gen Z habits are shaping new social contracts at work, why we understand how hard it is for seasoned executives to adapt to this new reality, and what it takes to create a more human-centric environment. We dig into the challenges of generational differences at work, where they stem from, and how empathy is the way to bridge those distances to increase engagement, understanding, and performance. We also chat about how work has changed from linear and routine to more networked and complex - and why the leadership skills that got you where you are might need a tune-up in today's reality. Sophie will share a few practical ways you can improve your culture. Key Takeaways:The last 3 years of the pandemic has expanded the mindset of learning and leading - ideas are now more likely to come from all levels of the organization than before. There is a difference between using technology functionally and using technology intuitively. The same goes for the evolving workplace. Younger generations are more likely to adapt to changing work environments than older generations because it is all they have known. AI is not replacing your job. AI cannot replace the human touch and human interactions and human relationships. Empathy is the master leadership skill. Throughout her career, Sophie Wade has been confronted with cultural norms, beliefs and behaviours that have literally caused her to stop and think. From rigid European workdays to Asian social habits and the American can-do spirit, she became an expert assimilator and realised that empathy was the key to unlocking understanding of all these different ways of working and living. Sophie now uses that empathy-based approach to help organisations evolve their leadership and workforces to be fit and flexible for the future. In this episode Sophie shares why empathy is vital in multi-generational teams and how curiosity can help with navigating complexity. Dominic Price, Work Futurist at Atlassian, first explains unlearning. He discusses the excitement and challenges of his work ensuring his company keeps adapting to stay ahead of competitors as it grows rapidly year on year. Focused on anticipating, exploring, and improving ways of working, Dom offers suggestions to specific questions that we are all currently trying to answer such as about hybrid work models, burnout, transformation challenges, and more, sharing his lived experiences, experiments and refined solutions. KEY TAKEAWAYS [03:10] Starting as a chartered accountant, Dom found a “job for life” wasn't his vocation. [03:54] Not wanting to fit into a box, Dom had to accept uncertainty and unlearn structure. [05:34] How to be happy with career progress when “learning” is the key measurement. [07:47] When Dom joined Atlassian it was one of the “best places to work”, but he hated it. [08:31] Applying his skills very differently, Dom was confronted reframing his “firefighting” role. [11:58] Dom's boss challenges him to adapt and grow 40% each year to stay in his current role. [14:10] We go back to old thinking because it was certain, not because it was valuable. [15:22] Dom's fascination with technology ends up with him focused on people. [17:48] Question 1 – How to tackle the complexity of hybrid models? [19:24] Underlying question – How do we become place agnostic? [20:24] When we are place agnostic, how can we find effective ways of working? [22:18] Question 2 – How does work “work” now? [23;15] Underlying question – What more can we understand about what it is to be human? [21:45] You can offer flexibility to your on-site workers. Dom explains how. [24:23] The importance of psychological safety. [26:14] Dom experiments and gives an asynchronous workshop. [28:12] We have to experiment and explore our way forward in the Future of Work. [29:11] Question 3 – How do you learn a growth mindset? [30:14] Dom's Five Ls exercise that he practices regularly. [32:55] The importance of role modeling behavior as leaders now. [36:03] Question 4 – How to embrace change and stop people resisting change? [37:50] Breaking down transformation into “what's one thing we can do today?” [39:40] Celebrating “the good old days” in a positive way to be able to move forward. [42:41] Question 5 – How to get rid of so many meetings? [46:19] Questions 6 - How do we reduce burnout? [47:15] Question 7 – Should I leave my employer? [48:55] Be the change you seek. Feedback is a gift, but only if you give it! [51:28] Question 8 & 9 – How can you help employees think through how to live their lives differently? How can their boss support this process? [52:00] Why Dom thinks we are obsessed with perfection and we should focus on progress. [52:45] Systems thinking—we can block progress if we only see the boundaries of the system. [53:51] Learning organizations don't exist, but learning loops do. [55:42] Dom believes the organization chart is damaging—hindering progress in organizations. [57:33] Leadership is based on competence, not level. You're gonna have to adapt to everything constantly.” “How do we get those teams in a distributed fashion to work effectively together? Once we solve that everything else is done, right? Everything else is gravy.” “How can we work human to human? How do we amplify that with technology? Technology isn't the answer, it's the amplifier.” “How do I build a balanced life and where does work fit into that?” “If you've got an hour, spend five minutes reminiscing on the good old days, spend the other 55 building better days tomorrow.” “Leadership is based on competence, not level.”
As companies around the globe struggle to find a new normal way of working —questions abound: How do we manage people's desire for flexibility with the imperative to keep colleagues connected? If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be? “I think society should have more conversations about our legacy, the impact we want to have (not just in our financials and how much we earn) but the impact on the planet. Impact on each other; impact on society and the outcomes we want to achieve. Because I fear that we’ve got carried away with busyness. We’ve got carried away with outputs. And I’m done with it” ____ Dominic Price has a career that has reached far and wide through Europe, US and Asia Pacific. Having a mindset and identity of creativity allows you to be more creative. In an organization it’s important for team leaders not to refer to some teams as the creative team because it makes it seem like it’s attainable only if you work in that team. Also within a team it’s important not to identify some as the creative ones and other less creative because it will make them like it’s something they can’t achieve because they are born with it instead of it being nurtured and practiced over time. It is a mindset more than a skill set. BIG IDEA 2 (7:13) – Go broad. This is about finding expansive ideas from multiple fields. Finding new connections and new applications for ideas. You can go to a place you wouldn’t usually go to or work from somewhere new and invite different thinking into your mind. BIG IDEA 3 (9:05) – Create stimulus. Almost all of the tips involve manufacturing something to create creativity. You need to think intentionally to switch on or stimulate your creativity. What can you do to mix things up which will stimulate a different environment and conversation. There is evidence that shows that the things around you can spur or hinder creative thinking. It’s really up to you to create creativity with intent and aligned to what you are looking to achieve. Head of R&D and Work Futurist at Atlassian, Dom Price sees an unsettling trend: a celebration of Agile teams who do all the right things but don’t get any of the value. While Price sees Agile as “a philosophy, a spirit,” he argues that too many large organizations use it as a means to achieve compliance, managers going around with their checklists, saying “We do x, we do y, therefore we’re Agile tech.” But Agile is a means to real value - faster time to market, more innovative teams, more engaged teams, which are the true signposts for business agility. Price shares his experiences helping Atlassian with their scaling transformation and a challenge for agilists: “It’s ironic for me that people who are Agile practitioners, ones who are saying Agile is all about evolution, aren’t evolving as people. They’re static. They’re using things they learned 17 years ago and they’re deploying it in the exact same way.” Howard Sublett hosts at Agile2018 in San Diego.
