In today's fast-paced, always-connected world, achieving a harmonious balance between professional responsibilities and personal life is more challenging and essential than ever. Traditional notions of a strict separation between work and personal life are giving way to more fluid, integrated approaches.Understanding the New Work-Life BalanceThe modern work-life balance is not just about dividing time evenly between work and personal activities. It's about finding a harmony that allows for productivity and success at work while ensuring personal fulfillment and well-being. This balance looks different for each individual, as it depends on their unique circumstances, values, and life stages.Support the Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1590358/support Closing of ReThinkBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! The Long Game & the Short Game (ft. Eric Termuende)How focusing on long-term goals improves short-term outcomesOPENING QUOTE:“The biggest issue I think I had in starting my career was my age. How could, at the time, a 22-year-old speak about work and the future of work if he's never had a job?”-Eric TermuendeGUEST BIO:Eric Termuende is one of the fastest growing young speakers in the world, having rocketed to success on the heels of his bestselling book, Rethink Work, powered by his expertise on the future of teams and work.LinksWebsiteFacebookTwitterLinkedInYoutubeRethink Work[3:55] - Turning Passion into PurposeHow Eric combined interests to create a speaking careerEric Termuende is a wonderful example of how simple algebra can lead to profound insights about your career. He had a passion for workplace culture. He believed in helping organizations transform for the better. And he enjoyed performing, being onstage in front of a group of people. He did some basic self-analysis and found a career path that would allow him to harness all of these passions while providing real value.[8:16] - The Magic One-Degree ShiftsSmall changes, big impactEric is a believer in making small corrections that, when combined, add up to big transformations. One area where he's making these shifts is in removing friction in his business— how can a story be tweaked, how can a process be streamlined— to build more momentum toward the next level of success and impact.[10:58] - Habit vs. PracticeBoth are important. One is essential. Eric stresses the difference between habit and practice. Habit is developing an automatic course of action, day in and day out. But in his words, shooting lots of foul shots won't make you a great shooter. It's the practice, the tiny adjustments, that lead to improvement. Don't rely on habit. Depend on practice.[19:56] - Have Fun with ItA cliche with truth at its coreAfter 16 months away from live stages due to COVID, Eric was nervous about his first live event. But he ultimately decided to focus on simply enjoying himself, and the result was one of his most successful events both in terms of his impact and the opportunities it's opened for him. The lesson? Remember that the whole point of following your passions is to enjoy your work. RESOURCES:[2:19] Rethink Work, book by Eric Termuende[10:58] Kobe Bryant's Practice RegimenFollow Eric Termuende:WebsiteFacebookTwitterLinkedInYoutubeFollow Josh Linkner:FacebookLinkedInInstagramTwitterYouTubeABOUT MIC DROP:Brought to you by eSpeakers, hear from the world's top thought leaders and experts, sharing tipping point moments, strategies, and approaches that led to their speaking career success. People have been complaining about “kids these days” since before the dawn of time. This whole “young people are entitled and don't know how good they have it” thing isn't new, and it seems to be an especially well-used trope in trades and construction. When you have young 20-somethings demanding a higher hourly wage than you ever made and the quality of their work is suspect, it's tough NOT to be a little cynical. This puts you in a tough spot because as infuriating as some of the Gen-Zers and Millennials are to you, the physically demanding nature of your business means you need to find a way to connect, attract and lead young people. The other pitfall of cynical thinking is that you paint a huge population with too broad a brush. Writing off 70 million people as “lazy” is, ironically, a form of laziness in and of itself. For every blue-haired tick tocker that makes your eyes roll, there is a quiet mechanically minded kid who wants to work with their hands... and it's your job to find these youngsters and showcase what an amazing lifestyle and career IS possible through trades and construction. OPENING QUOTE:“I want to be very clear for all of the Playmakers here. The future of work is a journey, not a destination. It's every step that we take now, it's the small changes that we make to ensure that we can keep and attract the best talent, build a strong culture to improve our leadership practices and our soft skills. It is everything that we're doing to build a better, more resilient organization for tomorrow.” — Eric TermuendeGUEST BIO:Eric Termuende is a global keynote speaker and author of the best-selling book, Rethink Work. Having been on hundreds of stages and worked with and studied the greatest places to work in the world, he knows exactly what it takes to build incredible teams that are resilient, innovative, and ready for the future of work. A former world economic forum global shaper and recognized as one of the top 100 emerging innovators under 35 by American Express, his ideas have been featured in Forbes, Thrive Global, and the Huffington Post.Learn more about Eric Termuende:WebsiteTwitterLinkedInInstagramFacebookCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[7:08] - There's No ‘Best' CultureBe who you are, don't be who you're notMagazines and websites can try to rate the ‘best' company culture, but the truth is that there's only the best company culture for you. Quirky company atmospheres like the ones at Zappos may not be for everyone, but they are so firmly who they are that they attract lines of qualified applicants around the block.[20:53] - Don't Be Netflix. Be YouStop looking to other organizations as ‘perfect' examplesEveryone wants to be the ‘next' Google or Netflix. But the truth is that you don't really want to be like them, you want the happiness, satisfaction, and success they have. Find out what the process of obtaining those things looks like for your organization. It may be the same in some cases, but in others it may be dramatically different.[25:27] - The Power of Psychological SafetyWhen people are empowered to be themselves, amazing things happenListening sessions are a powerful tool that can help team members feel safe, heard, and empowered. How available are you to hear ideas? How safe do the people around you feel sharing their ideas? [29:01] - People Hate Change, and They Hate Standing StillThe power of a difference of a few degreesNever underestimate the power of incremental changes. People and organizations can react negatively to massive sea changes, but the essence of a one-degree shift is that it's the smallest viable change, like one degree on a compass, and it can eventually lead an organization to completely transform. [33:40] - Trust Requires PresenceDoing two things at once means doing neither thing wellOn average, we're doing two things at once for 42% of our day. We're texting while we're on a phone call, we're finalizing a report while we're watching a movie with someone. But you can't build trust when you're multitasking. Trust requires attention, presence, and focus. You just have to be willing to give it.[48:40] - Deeply Consider Where You Invest Your LifeWhether it's 10,000 hours or 100,000 hours, make it matterIf you're going to invest your life's work into something, make it count. Make it matter. Do something that gives you energy instead of depleting you of energy. It takes commitment and dedication and sacrifice to achieve something, so make it something worth achieving. RESOURCES:[0:36] The Power of Playing Offense, by Paul Epstein[29:24] Dave Brailsford BioFOLLOW: We'd love to hear your thoughts on today's episode. TheEverydayLifeBalanceShow|Transform Your Life!|Weekly Interviews and Insights on Life Balance and Harmony With Bestselling A

...................................... FULL TRANSCRIPT ...................................... Hi, I'm Pascale Gibon and welcome to episode 161 of The Everyday Life Balance Show. Thank you for listening. The event that shook the world back in March allowed us to rethink our life and our priorities. Some people have had to pivot from working in an office to working from home. Some had to rethink their career completely following redundancy. Others had to rethink their lifestyle. At the same time, lockdown gave us also the opportunity to do the things we never had the chance or time to do like: cooking, exercising, gardening, spending valuable time with our loved ones, being mindful of our environment, studying something new or reading or finishing a good book. Simple tasks that bring us joy and happiness. We found the time to complete tasks we usually postpone to tomorrow and tomorrow never comes. For example, I saw many more people exercising and riding their bicycle than usual. Now that we experience a sense of normalcy again, the question is, should we return to our old ways of stressful living? By this, I mean: always rushing, surviving and living in the past or the future or should we envisage the possibility of being more mindful so that we can experience more peace and follow our joy. Indeed, in my opinion, it would be such a shame to return to the old ways of too much stress and not enough time for work-life balance. Therefore, I want to encourage you today to hold in mind the positive life changes you made during the lockdown and to stick to them as much as possible. I intend to help you retain this sense of harmony you have attained due to more time. I think this is only possible when you rethink your priorities with work-life harmony in mind. It is about being and doing the things that bring you joy: work satisfaction as much as life satisfaction to stay in balance. I invite you to continue to cultivate work/life harmony as much as possible. Take some time today to answer this question: How could you schedule more time to do the things you love so that your life is not just about coping on a day to day basis? Your time is now to create more work-life harmony to live a healthier, more prosperous and fuller life. I hope you enjoyed today's episode. Remember now is your time to transform your life one step at a time. I look forward to connecting with you next Monday. Have a great week, take care and lots of love. ………………………. There are many paths to success. Though the paths to failure are lined with countless examples of in-authenticity. When we join an organisation, we aren’t signing up for 39.5 hours / week. We’re signing up for a lifestyle, a community, Eric argues. A community extends beyond the standard work week & its efficacy is assessed more broadly than the individual inputs of its members. Because if we can be inspired by these people and pull some of those qualities, characteristics and best practices that they’ve got, and apply them with a slight tweak to who we are and what we’re trying to do, that’s where the innovation starts.” - Eric Termuende Like many people, you may find yourself wanting the life that someone else may have, and look to imitate or emulate that person to get to where he or she is today. Eric Termuende is Co-founder of NoW Innovations Canada, an international speaker, and bestselling author of the book “Rethink Work”. Mike Petrusky asks Eric about his mission to change the way we talk about work and his thoughts on the role that facility managers might play in the workplace of the future. Eric and Mike share a similar philosophy about the importance of real human connections and the value of finding a sense of belonging in our workplace communities. They discuss how FMs can influence the ways their organizations attract and retain talent by understanding our fears and meeting the needs of the stakeholders in a facility. Eric reflects on the inspiration and information he received when interviewing many industry thought-leaders during the Future Proof Summit in 2017, which included a couple of our friends from the “FM Innovator Nation”. Changing the culture of work is an effort that requires involvement by all departments of an organization and Eric believes that facility professionals are uniquely qualified to help deliver messages to their teams while improving employee engagement. OC039: Three ways to rethink work / life balance

Onward Creatives

There are few subjects as divisive as work/life balance.  We definitely live in a world of polarizing opinions on what this means and what is the proper balance.  On one side of the equation is the group idealizing working from the beach, living life to it's fullest all the time.  On the other side is the "I hustle and work while you sleep and play."  Both sides are loud mouthed, opinionated and mostly motivate through guilt.  You deserve better than this! It's time to rethink the whole work/life debate (which includes redefining these stupid words). 1. There's not just one definition of work/life balance.  It's not the fewest amount or the most amount of hours which wins, because each of us is different.  It's time that we let go of the guilt and the manipulation and realize that proper balance varies from person to person. 2. Stop seeing work and life as opposing factors.  The fact is that life is everything.  Life is family, work, play and us as individuals.  Hotwire president Henrik Kjellberg has reframed the discussion around work and leisure.  He works in order to enjoy leisure and his leisure refreshes him for his work.  There's no separation between the two and they're not always opposing factors. 3. Succeed with a purpose.  Jim Bird thinks of this as achievement and enjoyment.  You work for a purpose which is where you find enjoyment.  This step is probably where most of us struggle because we've never taken the time to define what we really want, or we're afraid to admit it to others.  Until we define our purpose and what we actually want we'll always struggle with the time we invest in our work.
