Dom Price was given some pretty bad advice right before he became a father. A well-intentioned friend told him never to share pictures of his overseas work trips with his partner, because it might make her jealous… On his first few long-distance work trips after becoming a dad, Dom didn't want to tell his partner that he was having a good time in case it made her time home alone with their twins feel even more challenging by comparison. But Dom quickly discovered the opposite was true.  Of course, his partner wanted him to have a good time, and she reminded him that if he had to leave them for a week anyway, it would only be truly worthwhile if he got everything possible out of his trip. She also reminded him that leaving the family intermittently for work was actually part of his role as a father, especially as the only breadwinner at the time.  Since then, Dom and his partner have been hyper-conscious of their communication, and pay particular attention to when and why they're feeling guilty as parents and partners.   Connect Dom via X, Linkedin, or on his website.Listen to the full interview here. Hello listeners! No new episode this week, but we wanted to revisit this 2018 classic with Dom Price, from Atlassian. It'll help you think about whether the habits and behaviors that have helped you navigate the world to this point, are still useful today. Regular show notes below. --- In the early stages of our careers we learn how to do our jobs, manage office politics and earn promotion. But those habits and behaviours that initially help us advance can become a burden. We end up in meetings because it used to be important to show face, and not because they're an effective use of our time. In this week's GoodPractice Podcast, Ross G and Owen speak to Dom Price, Futurist at software developer Atlassian, about his approach to 'unlearning' habits and behaviours. They say those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. As true a statement as it is, it's missing one crucial element. If you never confront the reality of the present and get to the heart of why you are where you are, you won't be able to unlearn the habits that got you there in the first place. In this episode of Unlearn, Barry O'Reilly talks with Dom Price, Work Futurist at Atlassian, who shares insights on facing the reality of the present, unlearning outdated practices, and embracing new ways of working to drive meaningful change and growth in organizations. Dom's early work experience started in London at Deloitte, where he spent three years as an accountant. His job left him unfulfilled and passionless, but that all changed over sushi. Don's boss at Deloitte offered him the opportunity to work in either New York or Sydney. Despite the allure of New York's size and boldness, Dom chose Sydney for its smaller team environment, where he could have a more hands-on, full-stack experience. This decision marked the beginning of a diverse and interesting career journey that eventually led him to Atlassian.Embracing Reality and Unlearning Past PracticesDom highlights the importance of facing the honest reality of the current situation in organizations. When leaders truly acknowledge where they are today, they can pay homage to the past while also identifying areas that need to be unlearned or improved. Not only will this allow those leaders to eliminate what is holding an organization back, it will also shine the light on what is exceptional and should be elevated. Taking this approach will help break away from average practices and strive for continuous improvement.Collaboration Over SilosBarry and Dom discuss the significance of breaking down silos within organizations to foster better collaboration and communication. This begins with recognizing that the entire company runs day to day on the hundreds of small tasks that require input from every team member and department. When collaboration and breaking down silos becomes a priority, a company can enhance its efficiency, productivity, and overall effectiveness. Equally as important, this type of culture honors the diverse perspectives they bring.Seeking Growth and Avoiding PlateausOver time, companies trend toward mediocrity and status quo, but Dom stands firmly against the plateaus that seem inevitable. There is always a place for growth and improvement, and it requires each person involved to challenge themselves, step out of comfort zones, and actively seek new opportunities. Instead of complacency, a mindset of continuous learning, adaptation, and growth will ensure excellence and innovation.Practical Change Initiatives Over Theoretical TransformationsDom discusses the pitfalls of theoretical transformations, such as Agile transformations, that lack a clear understanding of the underlying goals and realities of the organization. Instead, he advocates for practical, action-oriented change initiatives that address specific needs and challenges within the organization. By focusing on tangible outcomes and being honest about real issues, companies can drive sustainable change and meaningful progress.Balancing Heritage and InnovationNot all of a company's past should be unlearned, nor should its achievements be forgotten. There is a balance to strike between an organization's rich heritage and the need for innovation and adaptation. Dom shares how companies can find a balance between honoring the past and embracing innovation, and companies can leverage their heritage while staying relevant and competitive in a rapidly changing environment.ResourcesDominic Price on LinkedIn | Atlassian

Dom Price's health journey didn't start where he expected. In fact, it started in phases… Phase one was a realisation. He's always lived like a youngster - he's energetic, excitable, passionate, and incredibly busy. This made him think he was immortal, even if he wasn't exactly pursuing a healthy lifestyle. But he realised he was mortal the hard way when he was diagnosed with bowel cancer a couple of years ago.  He says it shocked him, but not quite enough to change him. Phase two was about actively focusing on his health, and it took a major life change to get to this phase. Now that Dom's a father, he's realised what was going on - he was responsible only to himself, and the consequences of inaction would be his own to shoulder. That's no longer the case, and Dom now pursues health and wellbeing not just for his own sake, but for the sake of his partner and his two young twins.  He dives deeper into the moments that changed his approach to health, and shares the main habits and behaviours that he's finding most beneficial so far.  Connect with Dom on Twitter and LinkedIn and at https://domprice.me/ *** My new book The Health Habit is out now. Atlassian's Dom Price is just like anyone else - some days, he just doesn't want to get out of bed. The difference is: he stays in bed.  After decades of working at breakneck speed, Dom's learning to listen to the signals his body sends him, and it's working wonders.  But what about when it's something beyond a bad day? What about when he's feeling truly burnt out?  Dom's theory is that part of what causes burnout is ‘information obesity', and one of the best ways to overcome it is with action. Dom believes the world can be a “Do-ocracy”, and that means picking one thing to do now, and seeing how it goes.   Connect with Dom on Twitter or LinkedIn You can find the full interview here: Atlassian's Dom Price wants you to up your communication by designing a “working agreement” *** My new book Time Wise is out now. Whatever happened to that huge, game-changing project you started working on last year? Or the idea you had a couple of months ago?  If you've got an ever-lengthening list of unfinished and abandoned pursuits, it's probably because you're not prioritising the correct ‘time horizons', as Atlassian's Dom Price calls them. The first horizon is the short-term: answering emails, making sales calls, delivering final products - anything that gives you a sense of immediate gratification.  And while wins in this first horizon are crucial, they're also a bit of a trap. After all, when immediate gratification's available, it's hard to resist. But if anything truly special's going to happen, it's going to take the disciplined pursuit of longer-term goals.  Dom also highlights why simply setting long-term goals isn't enough, and details his system for nurturing these seeds over multiple months, or even years.  Connect with Dom on Twitter or LinkedIn You can find the full interview here: Atlassian's Dom Price wants you to up your communication by designing a “working agreement” *** My new book Time Wise is out now. 2022 is well underway and… yeah. We're still doing a lot of virtual meetings. While there's great optimism in the air around the new level of flexibility most companies are offering their workers now, virtual meetings are still pretty… average. But let's not blame Zoom straight away: meetings as a work practice have gone unexamined for far longer than they've been online. Atlassian's Dom Price saw this, and sought a better way. He and his team did a deep dive into what a meeting is for, and what's holding it back. Maybe not surprisingly, they found that almost nothing about the meeting as we know it was worth keeping. So - they didn't keep it! Dom explains why Atlassian decided to almost completely kill the meeting, and how they replaced it with their own purpose-built tool for asynchronous communication. Connect with Dom on Twitter or LinkedinYou can find the full interview here: Atlassian's Dom Price on dramatically improving virtual meetingsCheck out Atlassian's Team CentralIf you're looking for more tips to improve the way you work, I write a short monthly newsletter that contains three cool things I have discovered that help me work better, which range from interesting research findings through to gadgets I am loving. Dom Price sees the future. But he’s not a late-night hotline psychic. Dom is the globally renowned work futurist at Atlassian – Australia’s first multi-billion dollar software company. Dom’s superpower is his ability to inspire people to transform the practices of their working lives, so they can work anywhere, with real flexibility and purpose – and design the futures they want to intentionally step into. But what first strikes you about Dom is that he is unmistakably from Manchester, has boundless curiosity and is infectiously joyous. In this episode of Human Cogs, hosts Sabina Read and Madeleine Grummet go deep with Dom on how we work, why we work, how his recent battle with cancer catalysed his own work-life shifts – and why we should all be doing audits on ourselves every Friday afternoon. In the current COVID world, we, unfortunately, couldn’t be in the room together for this chat, so we apologise if the sound quality is a bit dodgy in this episode. The book will explain: How to instantly ‘switch on’ your creativity Why traditional brainstorming is bollocks How exposing yourself to certain types of images can significantly boost your creativity Why your physical environment may be killing your creativity And much much more Source: https://www.amanthaimber.com/books/ Links Check out the How I Work podcast (and it’s seriously impressive guest list) here: https://www.amanthaimber.com/podcast/ I particularly enjoyed this episode with Atlassian’s Work Futurist, Dom Price: https://www.amanthaimber.com/podcasts/atlassians-dom-price-on-how-he-uses-imposter-syndrome-to-his-advantage/   BIG IDEA 1 (5:08) – Identify This is the need to identify yourself as creative. Having a mindset and identity of creativity allows you to be more creative. In an organization it’s important for team leaders not to refer to some teams as the creative team because it makes it seem like it’s attainable only if you work in that team.  Also within a team it’s important not to identify some as the creative ones and other less creative because it will make them like it’s something they can’t achieve because they are born with it instead of it being nurtured and practiced over time.  It is a mindset more than a skill set.  BIG IDEA 2 (7:13) – Go broad.  This is about finding expansive ideas from multiple fields. Finding new connections and new applications for ideas. You can go to a place you wouldn’t usually go to or work from somewhere new and invite different thinking into your mind.  BIG IDEA 3 (9:05) – Create stimulus. Almost all of the tips involve manufacturing something to create creativity. You need to think intentionally to switch on or stimulate your creativity. What can you do to mix things up which will stimulate a different environment and conversation.  There is evidence that shows that the things around you can spur or hinder creative thinking. It’s  really up to you to create creativity with intent and aligned to what you are looking to achieve.  Music By: A Look Out Song by Assaf Ayalon Let’s Connect LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/steph-clarke Instagram: @stephsbizbookshelf Enjoying the show? Head of R&D and Work Futurist at Atlassian, Dom Price sees an unsettling trend: a celebration of Agile teams who do all the right things but don’t get any of the value. While Price sees Agile as “a philosophy, a spirit,” he argues that too many large organizations use it as a means to achieve compliance, managers going around with their checklists, saying “We do x, we do y, therefore we’re Agile tech.” But Agile is a means to real value - faster time to market, more innovative teams, more engaged teams, which are the true signposts for business agility. Price shares his experiences helping Atlassian with their scaling transformation and a challenge for agilists: “It’s ironic for me that people who are Agile practitioners, ones who are saying Agile is all about evolution, aren’t evolving as people. They’re static. They’re using things they learned 17 years ago and they’re deploying it in the exact same way.” Howard Sublett hosts at Agile2018 in San Diego. His job involves looking at macro-level trends in the workplace to understand the complexity of the future world of work. (Although much of it is guess work...) How Dom takes the "less hippo, more elephant" approach into his interactions with other companies/organisations. What Atlassian does and where its employees are based. From 500 to +2,000 people and the change that this brings. How Dom’s role emerged and how Atlassian developed its own way of staying agile. They have now opened up their internal ways of working: https://www.atlassian.com/team-playbook “We don’t want to be famous for how big we are, but for how awesome we are.” How and why the playbook was created and opened up. “As we scale, we want to feel smaller, not bigger. More creative, not slower.” As the company has grown, it has become more distributed in many ways. A shared language and way of working has become essential. Building the awareness in companies of the need to remain adaptable and the dangers of “transformations”. Preventing hierarchies from emerging as your company grows and how the fear of failure could be driving this. How you operate has nothing to do with size, it’s all to do with attitude and mindset. If we have to add something in, what other things can we stop doing? “Collaboration is about being willing to be wrong.” “Organisational structure can give you a comfort blanket that’s not real.” How remote working is evolving at Atlassian and how so many assumptions were challenged after acquiring Trello. In the early stages of our careers we learn how to do our jobs, manage office politics and earn promotion.
