In episode 108, Mansour El-Zahab and Zeynep Kösereisoğlu from Frontierview, a leading market intelligence and research company, join The 966 to discuss Saudi Arabia's Regional HQ program (commonly referred to as the "RHQ" program) and dive into some of the legal and practical details ahead of the effective date of the program starting in 2024. The RHQ program is the requirement that companies seeking to contract with the Saudi government or its affiliates must have their regional headquarters within Saudi Arabia and not in any neighboring nations. That has posed some challenges but also opportunities for foreign investors ahead of a key deadline on January 1, 2024. What companies are subjected to this rule, and what defines compliance here? How have these requirements of compliances changed over time since they were announced? What are some challenges that MNCs are facing in their new HQ setting, or in their journey to get there? And how are neighboring states, like the United Arab Emirates (UAE), reacting to the policy? Mansour and Zeynep dive into these questions and much more. Before the conversation, the hosts discuss Richard's One Big Thing, which is Saudi Arabia's investments into the development of its own local defense sector. The Kingdom is effectively seeking to build a local military industry from scratch - a tall order with a high price tag. But an even higher price tag for Saudi Arabia to-date has been its foreign military purchases from other nations, especially the United States. The hosts discuss the progress of the development of the sector, headed by GAMI and SAMI in Riyadh, ahead of the forthcoming World Defense Show in Saudi Arabia in 2024. Next, the hosts discuss Lucien's One Big Thing - a Goldman Sachs article that was published earlier this week on the progress and achievements of Vision 2030. The 154 year old financial services behemoth, maybe the most recognizable name in banking and financial services in the world, and the second largest investment bank by revenue in the world behind only JP Morgan Chase, published an article entitled "How Saudi Arabia is investing to transform its economy" and is available on the Goldman Sachs website. Goldman Sachs Research identifies as areas that are benefiting from increased investment and are likely to drive a “capex supercycle” through the end of the decade. The hosts conclude as always with Yallah! 6 top storylines to get you up to speed on Saudi Arabia heading into the weekend. •A week after revealing talks with Australia about bidding to co-host the 2034 World Cup, Indonesian soccer leader Erick Thohir said his federation is now supporting Saudi Arabia's candidacy to host the tournament. •The second edition of the “Made in Saudi Expo” exhibition will be held at the Roshn Front in Riyadh from October 16 to 19, 2023, under the patronage of Bandar Alkhorayef, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources and Chairman of the Saudi Export Development Authority. •Saudi Arabia's crude oil exports in August hit their lowest level in 28 months as they fell for a fifth straight month, data from the Joint Organizations Data Initiative (JODI) showed on Monday.•Saudi Arabia's $700 billion Public Investment Fund has disclosed that Swedish venture capital fund Northzone has taken investment from its venture investment arm Sanabil — the only European VC firm known to have done so. •Amin Nasser, said his company is looking at more investments in liquefied natural gas (LNG) to boost its plans to become a leading player in the seaborne gas market.•A landmark report released during the Middle East and North Africa Climate Week, which ran here from Oct. 8 to 12, highlights the challenges that Saudi Arabia might face in a world that is warmer by 3 degrees Celsius.

Parashat Behaalotecha: Remaining Loyal to Tradition

Insight of the Week

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 18, 2022

Parashat Behaalotecha begins with the commands given to Aharon regarding the kindling of the Menora. The Torah relates that after G-d conveyed the instructions for the lighting, "Va'ya'as Ken Aharon" – "Aharon did so" (8:3). Rashi famously comments that the Torah here praises Aharon "She'lo Shina" – for not deviating at all from Hashem's instructions. The Malbim (Rav Meir Leibush Weiser, 1809-1879) explains that Aharon is praised for complying with all the specific instructions, including the requirement to place precisely half a "Log" of oil in each of the seven lamps. The center lamp miraculously remained lit for longer than the other lamps, and Aharon might have thus thought that he should pour more oil into that lamp rather than rely on a miracle. But he instead did precisely what he was told, without deviating at all from Hashem's instructions, even when he might have had a reason to. The highest praise is "She'lo Shina" – remaining steadfastly loyal to the Torah, fulfilling Hashem's commands without making any changes. This praise is given to Moshe Rabbenu, as well, later in this Parasha, where we read that Hashem said about him, "Be'chol Beti Ne'eman Hu" – "He is the most trustworthy in My ‘household'" (12:7). Moshe was completely loyal and dependable. Pirkeh Abot begins by telling us that Moshe received the Torah at Sinai and then "Mesarah L'Yehoshua" – he "handed it over" to his disciple, Yehoshua. The Or Ha'haim (Rav Haim Ben-Attar, 1696-1743), commenting to the first verse of the Book of Vayikra, explains that Moshe faithfully handed over everything he learned from Hashem. He kept nothing from himself. He was impeccably loyal, transmitting every word he received from Hashem, without keeping any of it, and without changing any of the information. Immediately after the Revelation at Sinai, Hashem commanded, "Lo Ta'asun Iti Eloheh Chesef V'eloheh Zahab" – not to create gold or silver idols (Shemot 20:19). Curiously, G-d here forbids making such images "Iti" – "with Me." Some commentators explained this word to mean that we are not to create new religious ideas and principles even if this is done "Iti," for Hashem's sake, out of a desire to enhance His glory and serve Him. Regardless of our intentions, we are not entitled to fashion new "gods," to come up with new ideas in an effort to "upgrade" our religion. The prophet Yehezkel (20:37) says in Hashem's name, "Hebeti Etchem Be'masoret Ha'berit" – "I have brought you into the ‘Masoret' of the covenant." The Radak (Rav David Kimhi, France, 1160-1235) explains the word "Masoret" as a derivative of the root "A.S.R.," which means "bound," or "locked." Commitment to tradition means that we are "locked," bound by the strict rules and guidelines of our tradition, without the freedom to change what we decide we want to change. It occasionally happened that when Hacham Matloub Abadi (d. 1970) was asked a Halachic question, and ruled stringently, the person who posed the question would try to pressure the Rabbi to rule leniently. The Hacham would hold his hands together, as though they were chained, and say, "What can I do? My hands are bound to the Rambam! I can't do whatever I want!" This must be our approach to Halacha and to tradition – steadfast loyalty, without ever allowing ourselves the freedom to make so-called "improvements" to the Torah. May we be worthy of the praise given to Aharon, that he never deviated from Hashem's commands, and of the praise given to Moshe, that he was a loyal and trusted servant of Hashem.

How to Use Adventure Travel to Beat Stress with Ray Zahab

Eat Move Think with Shaun Francis

Professional explorer Ray Zahab has crossed some of the most unforgiving environments on Earth. He ran across the Sahara in 111 days and traversed Baffin Island nine times, most of them at the height of winter. In conversation with Medcan CEO Shaun Francis, Zahab argues for the age-defying and stress-busting benefits of adventure travel. Like Shaun, Zahab is an advocate for the Japanese practice of “forest bathing” and argues that we can access similar perks by just getting outside and exploring nature. It’s an inspiring conversation with a 52-year-old explorer who is not letting the pandemic keep him down. In fact, he’s vowed to exit lockdown restrictions in the best shape of his life.  INSIGHTS It is one of Zahab’s most foundational beliefs that people underrate themselves. He argues that most anyone has the capacity to accomplish so-called impossible tasks. Zahab’s experience conforms to that edict. After all, he won the first ultramarathon he ever entered. “Many of us underestimate ourselves physically, mentally [and] emotionally at some point in our lives. And we're capable of so much more,” he says. (12:34 - 12:48)  Someone recently messaged Zahab asking how to start running: “I’m not a runner, but I would really love to do a run someday. I don't even own running shoes. What do I do?” Zahab said, “you get off the couch on day one, and you walk to your front door, and you put on whatever shoes you have any kind of shoe, you lace them up, then you take them off and you walk back to the couch. That's the end of day one. Day two, you put the shoes on, you walk down to the end of your laneway or the end of your block, turn around, you walk home. Day three, you walk to the running shoe store — you get what I'm saying? A marathon starts with the first step.”  (14:05) Running gets a bad rap. Everything’s all about how to avoid getting injured while running. But if you follow a proper mobility and running program — running is exceptionally good for you. “It’s a hell of a lot better for you than not doing it,” Zahab says. (18:08) Doubt has afflicted Zahab, same as anyone. At the start of his Sahara expedition, Zahab left the west coast of Senegal and passed the first days of the 100-day-plus journey mired in low self-confidence. “I thought, all right, there's no way I'm making that,” Zahab recalls. “There's just no way. These guys will make it and I will not. But I'll go as far as I can. And that's all I can do.” But somehow, he did it. (23:03 - 23:35) On ultramarathons, desert crossings or Arctic expeditions, Zahab does what the Fleetwood Mac song says: “Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow.” In other words, take it one day at a time. “You get on day 60 [and you’ve] got 50 more days to go. 50. Like, forget it. The mind doesn't go there,” he says. “It's like, ‘okay, I'm going to get through tomorrow. And then tomorrow when we get in, we're gonna have something to eat.’ That's all I'm thinking about.” (27:03 - 27:36) Zahab believes in the Japanese concept of forest bathing – surrounding yourself with trees to reap the wellness benefits. “I've always felt [a close connection to nature when I’m running], to everything that's around me — that we are one connection,” he says. “We're one piece … and when I'm running, that is like a meditation for me.” (27:50 - 29:12, 29:34 - 30:44) Humans are capable of much more than they think they can achieve. Need proof? Think the COVID-19 vaccine. A shot that should have taken scientists 10 years to develop ended up getting into human arms in less than one. Ray believes in the human capacity for achievement. “I'm a big believer that you define what your goal is and work backward from there. There's always a plan. There's always a way.” Amen. (32:34 - 32:33) LINKS In the 2014 documentary film Running the Sahara, Zahab and two fellow ultramarathoners traversed Africa’s Sahara Desert on foot in 111 days.  Known as one of the “Goose People”, Zahab is a frequent product tester and representative for Canada Goose.  Testing endurance and will, the Marathon Des Sables is just one of the footraces Zahab has completed. Twice. Learn more about Zahab's adventures around the world by visiting his website.  Zahab is the founder of the non-profit organization Impossible2Possible that aims to push people to surpass their limits, and encourage youth to use adventurous experiences as a learning tool. He also creates once-in-a-lifetime expeditions and adventures through his company Kapik 1. Zahab recommends the book The Hidden Life of Trees, in which author Peter Wohlleben argues that the forest is a social network. It is available on Indigo and Amazon. Another one of Zahab's favourite reads is Chi Running: A Revolutionary Approach to Effortless, Injury-Free Running, available on Amazon and Indigo.   Zahab documents his journey on the Trans Namibia Expedition in a compelling video. There, he and his team ran 60 kilometres a day in extreme heat.   To learn about the Japanese practice of forest bathing, go here.  Connect with Zahab on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram @rayzahab.

I’m thrilled to share this week’s guest, Ray Zahab with you. He is truly an extraordinary human being. I was captivated by his story and the many videos he has on his website of his many adventures and expeditions. I love his story and the way he lives his life so much. Ray is a Canadian Adventurer, ultra-distance runner, and Founder of non-profit impossible2Possible. and has traversed some of the world’s most inhospitable regions on foot. He runs through the most incredible and fascinating landscapes from the desert to the arctic. What I think is really special about Ray is that he really cares about the people that he meets and the love that he has for connecting with them on a human level.  He is running and educating the world about all these places and I believe deep down he is literally running for his life. He used to drink and smoke “too much” as he said and had a very negative mindset. Then one day he got tired of himself and vowed to change. It took him 3 years to quit smoking but he stuck with it and stayed on the path of reentry. He wanted to be DEEPLY happy.    “Every person has the capacity to be extraordinary in their own way.” ~ Ray Zahab   Ray shares his near-death experience and the even deeper shift he found within himself as a result and how it changed his life. I also ask him about his tips and advice for moving toward a healthier way of living both through food and movement. I can’t wait for you to listen to this conversation and to be inspired. This week we learn how to Do The Impossible with Extreme Athlete, Ray Zahab. “You define yourself by what you do” Ray Zahab is an extreme runner and motivational speaker. He has been active in extreme running adventures in several countries around the world, including challenges that most people would consider impossible. But it wasn’t always that way. As a young adult Ray was smoking a pack of cigarettes per day, living a sedentary life and was basically unhappy. What motivated him to get off the couch and start training by tying a car tire around his waist for resistance while running uphills? What inspired Ray to become a leader in perspectives about what is physically possible? The answer will shock you! “When things aren’t going well, resilience is your ability to stick to it, not give up and see that light at the end of the tunnel. Things WILL get better.” In 2007 Ray starred in the documentary "Running the Sahara" narrated and produced by Matt Damon. The film follows three men as they run across the Sahara Desert, from Senegal to Egypt, at a pace of more than 50 miles per day for 111 straight days and more than 4,300 miles of challenging terrain. And that was just the start of Ray’s fantastic career to redefining “Impossible”. Ray has also crossed the Gobi Desert, the Patagonian Desert, the Mohave Desert, the Atacama Desert, Lake Baikal in Russia, Baffin Island, Death Valley and the Canadian Arctic. “A lot of the challenges that we face that are Goal-Based are 90% Mental.” Zahab is the author of the autobiography Running for My Life: On the Extreme Road with Adventure Runner Ray Zahab and co-author with Steve Pitt of Running to Extremes: Ray Zahab's Amazing Ultramarathon Journey “The one thing among leaders that seems to be consistent is that ability to be resilient” Links: Ray Zahab on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/ray-zahab-974a5429 Ray Zahab on Twitter: @RayZahab https://twitter.com/RayZahab?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Ray Zahab’s Email: rzahab@impossible2possible.com Ray Zahab’s Website: https://www.rayzahab.com/about/ Impossible2Possible Website: http://www.impossible2possible.com Ray Zahab’s Books: https://www.amazon.ca/Running-My-Life-extreme-adventure/dp/1897178441 Running The Sahara documentary: https://youtu.be/HidKMFClQUU Ubiquity Leadership Coaching: www.UbiquityLeadership.com Next Week’s Show: Startups & Entrepreneurs with Startup Canada’s CEO, Victoria Lennox

He’s faced death more than once on his adventures, but ask him which was the toughest and he’ll always answer “the last one.” It’s always the freshest in his mind. Ray believes in the possible and started a foundation called Impossible to Possible. i2P brings his expeditions to classrooms, sharing his journeys and his lessons with kids in an interactive way. Zahab uses these experiences to inspire kids to see possibilities in their own lives. He wasn’t always adventurous, hear how he went from a pack a day smoker afraid to take a chance to the man he is today, and how you can do it too. Lessons: 1. We overcomplicate things; the first step you take doesn’t have to be monumental.

 2. Take a chance and you will be surprised where life will take you.

We learn about Tony's nutrition, fueling strategy, the wonderful people he's worked and trained with, and in the end a rapid fire question round. Be sure to listen. Thanks!   Nutrition outside running Follow NSNG (No Sugars, No Grains) lifestyle. Eat when hungry. Typical day: Wake up, have a coffee with HWC (heavy whipping cream) Might have BPC (Bulletproof Coffee) if have a 20 mile run. Had a Fat Shake before the call consisting of  kale, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, chia seeds, and a scoop of coconut oil. Sometimes an afternoon snack of cheese and salami. Maybe a salad. Dinner would consist of steak, fish, or chicken and salad. Maybe some berries. Almonds or sunflower seeds. During running: Still a struggle. On a fat-adapted lifestyle and fueling strategy, Tony can run 20 miles without eating anything, so unless 20+ mile training runs are a regular thing, there isn't a lot of opportunity to practice fueling on the run.   Typically things to fuel with: Vespa PocketFuel Justin’s Nut butters Salami Cheese Pickles Olives Coconut oil In his most recent Jackpot 100 performance, while employing a High Fat, Low Carbohydrate fueling strategy:   For 80 miles: PocketFuel Salami Nuun for electrolytes No bonk. No rush of sugar. Badwater Tony Portera to me is the "real deal." While I fantasize doing big runs, Tony is out there making it happen. You'll hear him say he's not anybody special, but I beg to differ. He's fun to talk to, has a great story about his journey into running, has great things to say about running ultramarathons, someone I see as a wonderful ambassador of the ultra community, he's super encouraging, and even offers some advice to help improve on the next ultra. This is Part 1. Tony Facts: White Plains New York Husband and father of two. Lawyer in commercial real estate Dabbler of ultra running and has ran and continues to run prestigious events such like the Badwater 135, Jackpot 100, and Umstead 100. He has participated in the Badwater 135 six times. 2015 will be seventh. Running Background: Tony got into ultras by stumbling on it and deciding to try it. Started out soccer in high school, college, and after in law school with local club teams. After graduating from law school, life happened, and at one point weighed 210 pounds. Out of shape, drinking a lot of beer, and watching football and other sports. Got together with some guys who convinced him to do a local 4 miler or 5k. He said “Running is stupid!” He did more of these types of runs and was eventually persuaded to do a marathon. He said “This is stupid. If running 4 miles is stupid, this is even dumber!” His first marathon was the 2004 Twin Cities Marathon. Completed it in over 4 hours and told himself he’d never do another one again. But 25 marathons later, he kept trying to convince himself to stop running. His biggest mistake, was after reading Dean Karnazes’ book Ultramarathon Man where he learned about ultra marathons. He was blown away and said “If 4 miles is stupid, and running a marathon is even more stupid. Then ultra runners gotta be idiots!” And Tony convinced himself to do a 60k. Loving the Sport & Better Health In ultras marathon, Tony loved that he was able to show up to the start late, finished up on the same day, and head back to your car without a hassle. This plus getting in better shape made it more appealing. Eventually dropped 50-60 lbs lighter from his former weight in 2001. He enjoys the runs and loves the community, but still sometimes tells himself that “He’ll never do it again.” He uses these events as a way to learn more about himself. To find out what he can and can’t do. "You’ll never run the same race twice. You’ll experience different things and thoughts each time.” Tony’s Preparation: Work on nutrition on a regular basis. Prepare nutritionally, mentally, put in the work in training runs. Roughly 80-90 miles a week including the speed training and long runs. Typical Training Week (To build miles and speed. Doing about 74 miles of training). Monday a.m. - 25 miles.Tuesday - 8 miles.Wednesday - 10 mile tempo, 3 mile warm up. 4 miles at 6:55 pace.Thursday - 8 miles easy recovery.Friday - 12 miles interval: 3 mile warm up. 2 miles at 7:10 pace. recover 1 mile, six 400 mile repeats, and recover jog.Saturday - Off.Sunday - 12 miles. Long run may increase over time. This is a week typically to Tony and should not be used as a template for everybody else. Everybody is different. On Getting Coached:Tony is currently working with Zach Bitter on training and nutrition and has also worked with Ray Zahab. Recommends getting a coach for endurance events. Mentions:Film: Running on the Sun More Tony: Tony loves to help see folks enter into the ultra community for the first time. The Vermont 50 mile race was his first 50. Loves seeing people go out there. Thinks 50 miles is a great distance to get done in one day and it is very challenging Believer in drawing from others, especially folks who have experienced what you are trying to do. Fueling and hydration advice:Drinking to thirst.Keep trying different things. Learn something is always a success. Quote:"People may go out there and try and have a negative impression in their mind, but there are so many positives to take whether perceived negative or not. It’s often times the 2nd or 3rd try that you start to understand what you’re doing and love it more." ~ Tony Portera   Advice:Ray Zahab, founder of  Impossible To Possible (aka I2P) tells Tony “Ultra running is 90% mental. The other 10% is all in your head.” Quote:"Our best moments are found when we are at our weakest.” Catch Tony Portera If You Can: www.irunultras.com IRunUltrascom on Facebook On Twitter: @irunultras   Visit www.vinnietortorich.com to learn about Vinnie Tortorich’s NSNG Lifestyle.
