He was fascinated with the concept of using the hands, without the aid of therapeutic machines, to treat the various tissues within the body in order to promote health. After graduating as a Certified Athletic Therapist in 2005, Darryl worked at various clinics before enrolling at the Canadian College of Osteopathy in Toronto in 2012. Around the same time, he was working as the Assistant Athletic Therapist at Seneca College. During this time, he was able to help varsity athletes get better by supplementing his treatments with osteopathic techniques. In the private sector treating the general public, he also noted that the general public also got better when they received some type of osteopathic techniques. Darryl enjoys playing many types of sports, but he has a great love for hockey, darts, and especially golf. In this EP I speak with legendary Athletic Therapist Joe Kenny. Joe was for close to 40 years, the Lead Athletic Therapist at Brock University in Niagara, Ontario. Joe retired recently, and his legacy at the university is formidable. He is perhaps one of, if not the longest-serving Head AT at a major University in Canada and he has mentored and served countless students and student-athletes throughout his career. Joe and I go way, back, we met many years ago while serving on committees for the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association. We always enjoyed connecting at meetings and conferences. I always admired Joe's ability to be serious, focused, and on point in his work, but also able to enjoy life and have fun. We had a lot of fun together over the years, that is until he accidentally punched me in the nose on the dance floor! Joe has been married to his wife Karen for 30 years, and they have two grown children who remain the light of his life. I think you'll enjoy this episode and the richness of his life.If you liked this EP, please take the time to rate and comment, share with a friend, and connect with us on social channels IG @Kingopain, TW @BuiltbyScott, LI+FB Scott Livingston. Natasha's passion for the western industry, ranching, and rodeo comes from a deep love of the Western Industry! She has experienced first hand the injuries that can result from the western way of life, having a horse accident that left her with a lot of obstacles to overcome from a broken back from the L1-4,and the C6, Kidney damage, as well as a head injury. The doctor advised that her time riding horses was done, and to be grateful that she was alive, but Natasha wasn't going to accept that final outcome. So step by step, and win by win, Natasha taught herself how to walk again, to rebuild her physical strength, and grow her strong mental outlook!Natasha has a resilience perspective from this accident and she carried that forward in everything that she does today and evolved into her love and passion for her now business McCann Athletic Therapy! “Having a better understand and empathy towards athletes that are getting on all of the time, getting beat up, and what they are dealing with gave me a better understanding of what they were going through and how I could help,” Natasha says (19:58 in episode) Natasha and I talk about the rodeo road, and how her summer looks very similar to all of the cowboys and cowgirls that travel and Pro Rodeo. Her summer schedule is very similar to ours, because she is usually gone from June through August following the rodeo road and helping athletes with rehabilitation during the heat of the rodeo season. The ABMP Podcast | Speaking With the Massage & Bodywork Profession
A person has chronic upper back pain and severe problems with her aorta, requiring surgery that she didn't survive. Afterwards, her surgeon suggests that her back pain could be a referral from her aorta. How often do internal organs refer pain to the skin and musculature? And how do we recognize it when it happens? What is the mechanism? And can it ever happen in reverse, e.g., can skeletal muscle refer pain to internal organs? Join us for a short exploration of pain and referred pain—that will probably raise more questions than answers. It's boggling! On this week's episode, Kathryn and Kristi are chatting with professional cyclist Hannah Otto. At 26, Hannah has already spent more than half of her life as an endurance sports athlete. She raced her first triathlon at age nine and quickly found success in the sport. When she was 16 Hannah won the women's overall age-group title at the Xterra World Championships, and she talks about how that was the launch point for her career as a professional athlete. In college, Hannah ran track and cross country, was on the cycling and swim teams, and double majored in Athletic Therapy and Exercise Physiology. This “no limits” attitude has carried through to her athletic career, and after transitioning to racing mountain bikes at age 20, she is now making a name for herself in the gravel racing scene as well. After a long stint with a professional team, Hannah made the decision this year to race as a privateer. She talks about what that means, and why she made the decision to go out on her own. She also shares her plans for the 2022 season and beyond. Hannah's passion for cycling is infectious, and she hopes to be able to share that with everyone that she can. Janette Yee is a Perinatal Therapist with a background in Athletic Therapy and Massage Therapy. She works with athletic birth parents that share her belief, “Confidence and strength in your body during pregnancy and after childbirth is a RIGHT, not a privilege.” In response to suboptimal public perinatal healthcare, Janette created the Proactive Moms Method - a simple 13-exercise prenatal/postpartum program. Using this method, birth parents learn to stay active during pregnancy and return to pain-free sports after childbirth. Janette is best known for her two ground-breaking online Caesarean recovery programs. In them, moms learn the essential skills of scar massage and exercise to optimize recovery. These courses focus on the psychology of healing, painful sex, preventing the "C-section shelf", and safe return to sport. One is designed for all moms, the other, for athletes. Janette fills her days with mandatory playtime with her kids aged 3 and 6, while training for her return to competitive running. Her 15-year rugby career was recently recognized with a team induction into the Rugby Ontario Hall of Fame. The most Hard Core Athlete is a Mother Janette shares with Christina the work that she does with rugby athletes, and some of the injuries that she has endured in her 15 years of playing rugby. She reflects on her experiences of major injuries and concludes that nothing compares to being humbled by childbirth, both physically and mentally. In Janette's own words, “The hardest-core athlete is a mother, and the biggest injury is childbirth.” Expectations of Postpartum Healing Janette explains that most athletes push their bodies as hard as they can; that's what athleticism means. When you're pregnant, and certainly after a mother gives birth, that's just not possible. That can be a huge blow to an athlete's identity, to their ego. Janette explains that childbirth is a season-ending injury, and during this time off, you can make a plan; what do I need to do? There's that sense of empowerment, and it helps you see the light at the end of the tunnel. Mature Athlete versus an Immature Athlete Janette uses the word immature, but not as a term of judgment. The mature athlete learns to trust their body because the brain is really stubborn. The immature athlete is going to do silly things, not trust their bodies. It is wise to draw from your past experience of major sports injuries that you have gone through, in a certain respect, you will be wiser in making choices for your body. Caesarean is a very Interesting sort of Injury The surgery itself involves three main incisions, and many people don't appreciate that because they only see the singular external incision, but it's three incisions. Janette discusses scar tissue and the fact that it is a body's incredible super glue that holds all these incisions closed. Scar tissue is needed, especially for the first six weeks, so she instructs listeners not to bother it. The scar tissue is powerful, powerful glue that your body makes. Now that you know, pay it Forward Janette implores listeners to share information. Talk about it to anyone who will listen. You can make a difference every single day. That's how public health care is going to change. We all have a voice, and all of us can use it. Sharing information can make a difference in somebody's quality of life. All of us have that power. Happy Holidays guys, welcome to the last episode of 2021!! In this episode Varun and Harjot talk about what they been up to over the last month as they've been busy wrapping up their respective terms. Dr. Frances Flint IF IT QUACKS LIKE A DUCK...We sit down with one of the greats in this session and discuss the evolution of Athletic Therapy. From identifying gaps, building a program all the way to creating services for Therapists in need, Dr Frances Flint is a builder, a connector and has a vast range of experience, wisdom and expertise.
Christal grew up in a small farming community in Southern Saskatchewan. As an avid athlete with her share of injuries, she had little assistance from the medical profession available to her in her small town so decided to study Athletic Therapy at Mount Royal College. She wanted not only to understand what was wrong and how to recover but how to prevent injuries in the first place. Through college she was able to continue with her athletics; both as a competitor and as a therapist. She was a gold medalist Badminton player at MRC and she was able to be on the sidelines of many of her favorite sports (including football, hockey, baseball and volleyball) as well as sports she had little experience with (such as field hockey, basketball and judo) throughout university. After completing her Athletic Therapy diploma from MRC and her Kinesiology degree at the U of C, she continued to work with hockey in both the Alberta Junior Hockey League, Heritage Junior B Hockey League and the Women's Western Hockey League. She worked in private practice as an AT until requiring knee surgery (an injury sustained at playing hockey) which introduced her to the world of insurance where she worked for a number of years. Working as a rehabilitation specialist she recognized a challenge in the insurance and medical fields. There was a group of people in pain for which there is no apparent reason discoverable in today's traditional diagnostic tests or imaging. According to medicine and the insurance world, nothing was wrong with them. Christal had learned what she could in the insurance world and was anxious to get back into helping people directly in a clinical setting. After losing her mom to Cancer and her grandmother 6 months later, she learned life was just too short not to be doing what you were meant to do. But the question remained on how to help the population with unexplained pain – she needed to find a solution. After research into various educational options she found osteopathic manual therapy. A method to understand in more detail the anatomy of the human body and how all parts were interrelated. A method to understand WHY people had pain. She started her osteopathic studies in 2006 at the Canadian College of Osteopathy Vancouver Campus (now called the Canadian School of Osteopathy Manual Practice). She returned to private practice in 2007. Christal graduated after completing her thesis on vestibular disturbances in the post concussed active population. She continues to be a certified Athletic Therapist and has continued post graduate studies in endocranial spasm work, psycho-neuro-endocrine-immunology, emotional work within the fluids, mechanical link, neuro-kinetic therapy, and energetic work through the medicine wheel. In January 2019 she opened Take Flight Osteopathic Wellness with the goal of bringing hope to people who feared they'd have to live with the pain for the rest of their lives. Take Flights Mission is To help you, your performance and Life Take Flight.
If you've ever given birth (even if you feel like you walked away unscathed) this episode is for you. Janette Yee is a Perinatal Therapist with a background in Athletic Therapy and Massage Therapy. She works with athletic birth parents who share her belief: “confidence and strength in your body during pregnancy and after childbirth is a RIGHT, not a privilege.” Janette easily compares pregnancy to athletic training (even if you don't identify as an athlete, your body is training hard for a major event) and birth to the season-ending injury that sidelines players. Except that the player is a new parent, and the day after the injury they get back up and parent a newborn. She explains what diestasis is and what it isn't (there are a lot of myths online) and how to build yourself back up, no matter how long ago your birth was. We have a fun and meaningful conversation about parenthood and building both physical and mental resilience in parents so they can lead lives full of physical activity and purpose.
Nakita Rees, CAT(C), founder of ATfirst Therapy THERE IS NO PERFECT TIME. JUMP IN. Being a competitive dancer and teacher for the last 25 years, she has seen her fair share of injuries in young athletes & knew this was where she was meant to grow herself as an Athletic Therapist. Nakita's main area of practice is performance sports athletes and bridging the gap between healthy movement and the demands of their sport.Nakita is a strong believer in life-long learning and is always ready to help further her knowledge both as a practitioner and advocate for Athletic Therapy. Her passion for the profession and its foreseeable growth is why Nakita is committed to being part of the movement. Her dedication is what fuels her to become better each day - within her practice, with her patients, and within the growing community and it's membership.

She graduated from The University of Manitoba with a degree in Athletic Therapy, and returned later to obtain her Masters in Physiotherapy in 2014. What makes a fulfilling life? How do you live a life rooted in purpose and passion for helping others? Never knowing what you want and just jumping at whatever comes by would never get you around to a life you truly want. When we make hard decisions, that's when our being is tested and we get to look at the values that truly matter to us. It may be hard, but that will make sense to you and the people you want to serve. Jodi Toews shifted from a career in athletic therapy to graphic design as a course correction back to her original passion and fine arts training. Her graphic design business allows her to continue to serve the outdoor lifestyle, health, and wellness communities while setting her up to live a remote lifestyle. The mountains of the west have been calling for years, and she has designed her life to answer that call. Her background in kinesiology and patient care is hugely beneficial when helping businesses and professionals clearly communicate their knowledge and expertise. Many of her clients have never worked with a designer before and she is here to make that smooth and easy. She believes that when we live in alignment with our highest values we make the world better. She is committed to supporting professionals in the outdoor, health, and sport science communities run thriving businesses doing what they love. In this episode, Jodi talks about starting fine arts, shifting to athletic therapy, and going back to her creative background. She shares lessons on pursuing a collective goal at one of the gyms she worked for and how it taught her to not just rely on employment but to make a plan for herself, progress, and move up. The life she now lives is brought about by knowing what she wants and following her purpose in life. She points out how to act on opportunities to live the life you truly want even amidst fear. To her, it's about constantly pushing boundaries, finding value in it, and how it moves over to other aspects of your life. You have to believe that when you say what you want and put it out there, the world positively reacts to it, and that's what we can learn from Jodi's experience. Let's hear how she finds joy in just being in the moment, living the life she's always wanted for herself, and how she finds fulfillment in it. She also looks back to a time when things didn't happen the way she wanted them and how she understood what it meant now. Something we can all get insight from. She used to take the initiative of suggesting remote work to her boss at a time it wasn't a trend yet. How she made her boss say yes to it is one big idea for us to become action takers. She is a big believer in mentorship and hiring coaches. How it benefitted her immensely personally and professionally is one thing she shares, and we can do the same for ourselves. Do you want to know about branding and how this helps you market yourself? Jodi gives her thoughts on this topic and how you can make known to the world what you do uniquely. Also, listen to her talk about brand strategy and how it can help you and your business gain traction. Learn a thing or two and many more on why good professional health coaches are not able to do business well despite having the best skills they have; something we can also take a look at and learn from. It's good to hear Jodi's thoughts on what lies on the horizon for professional health coaches and how the current shift in the world will affect the business's online and in-person aspects. "If you know what you want, and you know what your values are, it leads to harder decisions, because you're always making decisions based on those values. And those aren't comfortable decisions. Whereas if you are floating along, and you're just doing what's easiest, it ends up leading to this life that's hard in a totally different way and in an unfulfilling way." - Jodi Toews What you will learn from this episode: 02:58 - From Fine Arts to Athletic Therapy 05:23 - What she loves reminiscing about her time at Focus Fitness 06:46 - Pursuing collective goal 08:46 - What getting employed taught her and why you need to make a plan for yourself 13:07 - Looking for opportunities and facing fears at the same time 16:06 - How it is like to be acting on your purpose amidst fear 17:42 - How she benefited from her 'boundary pushing mentality' 20:31 - How people positively react to what you just verbalize 21:19 - Know what you want and know what your values are 22:41 -The joy of being in the moment 23:10 - What happens when things don't go your way 25:53 - Taking the initiative on what works best in getting your work done in the least time possible 30:39 - Proving to do the work and make it happen and making it better 33:01 - Getting the accountability in a mentorship she had at a clinic and getting better at it 37:17 - How hiring a business coach accelerated her results both personally and professionally 39:12 - The most important values mentorship and coaching taught her 41:54 - What is branding in a nutshell 43:07 - Creating a brand strategy on the service you offer 44:24 - Reasons why good professional health coaches are not doing good business 45:49 - The need to tie the offer back to what people need 49:47 - How the option to do things remotely is going to be important as we see our world shifts 51:18 - Where does branding come in when using social media to market yourself as a coach? Our nervous system is designed to protect us at all times from all things and because of that it is connected to every system in our body. When we are suffering from an injury, chronic pain or illness, big t or little t trauma, chronic stress and anxiety it's easy to forget just how important those connections are to our physical, mental and emotional health. My guest today is Colleen Jorgensen, she's an Osteopath, a graduate of Pain Care U's Professional Pain Care program she's a therapeutic Pilates, yoga and Somatics teacher who got her start in movement with dance at the age of 3.A deep fascination with how the body moves led her to a B.Sc in Exercise Science with a major in Athletic Therapy from Concordia University in 1995 and a Rehab Pilates certification in 1996. Her curiosity about how the body, mind and spirit are interconnected led me to an Osteopathy degree from Le Collège d'Études Ostéopathiques de Montréal (CEO) in 2005 and a yoga teacher certification in 2018. In 1997 she founded CORE BASICS - Centre d'Ostéopathie et Pilates and was the proud owner of this small, multidisciplinary clinic for 16 years until challenging health issues changed my path quite suddenly. In 2017 Stillness in Motion was born. Combining manual therapy with creative, embodied movement, mindfulness, awareness, self-regulation practices and a distinctive, heart centered approach to pain care is what I am best known for. Living with chronic pain herself for over a decade has given her an invaluable perspective on the day-to-day challenges those in pain face. In 2020 my desire to empower people with knowledge, awareness and practical tools inspired the creation of Discover to Recover - Move from Pain to Potential, a 6-week online pain care program. She loves teaching and offers many courses, workshops and teacher trainings in embodied anatomy, somatic movement, and compassionate, creative pain care.I learned so much from my conversation with Colleen. We covered so many things but the overarching theme was connection. Making, keeping and healing connections throughout the body and the nervous system. In this 4 part series we are going to explore those connections... between chronic pain, the nervous system, integrating movement and breath and finding new ways to befriend our body to experience a full life.

I was absolutely thrilled to have one of my favourite friends and colleagues, osteopath Kevin Longpre from Vitality Multitherapy Clinic on the show. Kevin is just brilliant at his work and has helped me tremendously in my personal transformations and the many of my sports injuries throughout the years. I know you will all get so much value out of this conversation and his genius. As an Osteopath, Kevin Longpre is determined to find the true source of a person's pain. He completed his bachelor degree in Exercise Science at Concordia University with a specialization in Athletic Therapy. He quickly realized his passion for manual clinical work and completed his studies to become an Osteopath at the Collège d'Étude Ostéopathique de Montréal. Kevin is always looking to rid the body of barriers that are preventing the natural healing process of the body and is passionate about educating his patients on making better lifestyle choices to optimize their health. Today on Celebrating Simple Life the Podcast, I’m chatting with Jana Danielson, Founder of LEAD Pilates. After 10+ years in the world of HR and Management Consulting, her passion for Pilates and movement got the best of her. Jana’s passion for Pilates began in the early 2000’s when she stumbled across a Shape magazine with a picture of Madonna gracing the cover and the word “Pilates” splashed across the page. Although Jana was not sure what this word meant, as a bit of a pop culture nut, she sought out a facility in Saskatoon eager to try this new form of exercise. After a few sessions she began to notice differences within her body and was completely hooked. Jana has worked to create a unique studio devoted to providing students with the latest trends in health and fitness, by individuals for individuals. In Her 9,000 square foot state of the art facility, Jana and her incredible team offer almost 100 weekly classes for all ages from 8 weeks to 87 currently! They are experts in creating movement solutions so that people can enjoy the highest quality of life. From Chiropractic, Naturopathic Medicine, Massage Therapy, Physiotherapy, Athletic Therapy, Reflexology and Body Talk, their goal is to educate, inspire and move the bodies that choose to walk through their doors everyday. I spoke with Linda Stewart Nov 9, 2019 and we discussed how things are different between North America and France as far as our food and our processes surrounding intuitive eating and our cultural differences. We also discussed how books can be part of our intuitive process and how every single thing in our past builds on top of itself to bring us to our purpose or our destiny potentially to help us gather what we need to do what it is we are to do for the world. Linda's Bio I have been working in the field of fitness and wellness since 1980 after the realization that I could remake my life . Since then the fitness industry has evolved with a professional development path and certifications and through continual education I have attained certifications as a group fitness instructor, with specialities in boxing, rowing, aqua fitness, step, strength training and circuit classes. In addition, I am a Certified Personal Trainer and qualified to teach both yoga, and pilates.I completed two years of education in the Athletic Therapy program at Sheridan College in Ontario and successfully completed the course work and on site practical experience. I provided athletic therapy field care to a variety of sport teams including: football, hockey and lacrosse. As a result of these experiences I have insight into injuries, their assessment and rehabilitation as well as how to modify activities to suit recovery and develop fitness.I have worked with YM/YWCA of Canada, a municipality, private fitness facilities and as a contractor however, my favourite work experience was as the Fitness and Wellness Co-ordinator for McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. During my seven years at McMaster, I had the pleasure of training and evaluating fitness leaders and personal trainers as they prepared for their Certifications. One of the most significant accomplishments while at McMaster was the development and implementation of the Pulse Fitness Centre. As part of the Athletics and Recreation team, I played an instrumental role in this achievement including equipment selection, hiring and training a staff of over one hundred – fitness leaders, personal trainers and front desk staff. I also developed and taught a second year academic practicum course, focused on personal training and adult communication to over two hundred undergraduate students each year.Linda runs a company called Renewu and can be found at www.renewu.euLInda's favourite books are many but for fiction she loves reading Susanna Kearsley
