    I've shared about formerly being a fitness instructor and what my life used to look like (on the outside, behind closed doors as well as the embarrassing things that I hid). There have been lots of good and not-so-good moments throughout those years. Some of those things I can't wait to UNlearn but there are also the other parts that I am super grateful to have knowledge on. Today, I'm so glad that I can take the not-so-good parts and put a biblical filter on them. Don't you love how with God's ways nothing goes wasted? I'll be sharing beliefs I thought would make me happy, we'll talk about burnout, and reality versus expectations. Leaving the world's way to follow Christ in my fitness journey was so refreshing and I want you to experience it for yourself. If that sparks something in your heart then this is the episode for you!     How many times have you spoken or thought about yourself in a self-sabotaging way? Of course, intellectually knowing these things is not enough, and can be lost in the endless proverbial sea of what the world keeps on throwing in our faces.     As a Christian, looking for a weight loss (or fitness) program is a challenge especially if you don't know what to do (or where) to get started. With 819 million results to choose from you would think it would be easy to just choose one and go with it.. (Type “weight loss or fitness for women” into Google and you'll get at least that many results to choose from!) The reality is that finding a single program appropriate for us as Christians is tough. Majority of the programs out there have a common theme: vanity metrics (PLUS they encourage you to plan out and pursue self-centered goals). Lift your booty, tone your arms, flatten your tummy, run faster anyone? (Easy selling!) It's no secret that I wasn't following God's way regarding fitness and weight loss. I did what most of us would do (and still are… I get it). I followed what my flesh desired and did what I saw everyone else was doing. Outward appearances of the person leading a program MATTERED to me (a LOT). That's what led me to make a decision for which program to join. And as long as the exercises got my heart rate up really high the program was fulfilling part of their promise. My hope and encouragement were found in the fitness authority's body shape. But one year, finally, God opened my eyes and I saw that I was conforming to the world! I looked like everyone else. Not who Christ was calling me to be. My old desires were slowly starting to surface.  I coveted other people's bodies because I hated mine. My mind was determined to get back the body I used to have.     We want to lose extra weight and make fitness and health our priority and lifestyle. That's great except when it takes over our heart, mind, and how we live out this life. Our intentions, as lovers of Jesus, is to have Him lead our way and light our path BUT when we make weight loss, fitness, and health our MAIN thing it gets easier and easier to push God to the side. When He starts to fade away from our thoughts we forget about His promises and the fact that HE is what gives us peace, joy, and contentment. We also lose any desire to know Him deeper. And when we pay no attention to His words we miss out on so many opportunities to give HIM the glory.    When I hear loud thoughts inside my head saying, “You'll lose out if you don't do this or look like fill-in-the-blank” … and when I start to feel drained from doing all the things body, fitness, weight loss, watching how much food to take in, what's too much, what should I avoid, what should I eat more of, and on and on and on… it's a sign that I'm overdue to check-in with myself. It's a reminder to ask: Have I been spending excessive amounts of time working on my body for worthless reasons? The answer is always, YES!   If you consistently strive to reach those weight goals because your outward appearance matters more to you than anything (or anyone) else… If you can admit that your fitness and weight loss motivations are overshadowing your relationship with Jesus… If you would rather go to the gym even though you know your home needs some attention… If you're bitter because there aren't enough healthy options at the birthday party you went to… And you choose to hang out with your gym friends on the weekends instead of resting or restoring your body or having face-to-face time with the ones you have been given the role to take care of… Then, this is the episode for you. It's no secret that we live in a world filled with highlight reels and with that, it's easy to get sidetracked with the essentials of following God. I discovered that although I was proclaiming Christ as my everything outwardly the desires of my heart didn't show up the same way. Internally, my heart was struggling because I wanted “the body” I had from the previous years. I wanted more shiny objects and that included the next hyped-up fitness toy, exercise program, the list goes on. Sister, let's keep the most important part of our lives as THE most important part of our lives - with Jesus smack at the center of everything all around us including our fitness and health plans and priorities.     Knowing the difference between following a weight loss, health, and fitness program, the world's way, and God's way is a key factor to truly walking and being where and who Jesus calls us to be. Picking one over the other will either lead us with pride in our accomplishments or lead us with a heart of humility, compassion, service, and love just to name a few. The truth of the matter is that when we sign up for that gym membership or say “yes” to committing to our health there is something we need to be mindful of. That is, we are people prone to forget that choosing to walk in the ways of the world will get us to meddle with things we shouldn't be meddling with. That is a guarantee. There's so much opportunity to give in to temptation out there. Mainly in glorifying ourselves (I've been there!). Ultimately, following the world's ways will shape us into overconfident people when truly our confidence and wisdom need to come from Jesus alone. But it still leaves the question of how do we recognize if taking care of our bodies the world's way is leading us to be overconfident in ourselves?     Could comparing your body image to other women be derailing you from God’s purposes over your life? It is a privilege to bring on my first guest, Heather Creekmore! She is the author of Compared to Who and The Burden of Better. She has the heart to help women be free of comparison and to help them release the burden of it! In this episode, we talk about all things comparison including what happens to our relationships when we SETTLE with comparing ourselves to other people? Even to our own husbands. Wait what?? We talk about what we OUGHT to seek rather than comparing ourselves to others (I mention Rahab here so listen out for that). And assessing whether we have a "crab" mentality, amongst other goodies for you to bite into! If you are struggling because you bit the comparison bait just know that you are not alone! I still catch myself falling into that trap. The difference today is that the Holy Spirit has helped me to realize that comparison is simply a decoy from Satan.
