Ahhh the taper: one of the most questioned and untrusted aspects of training. I get it; you're training way less in a taper. So, it would make sense to worry about if you're doing it “right” to not risk losing all that hard built fitness you've earned. Here's the thing: when you do the taper right, you give yourself a better chance of increasing performance on race day, with doing less work, and without the losing the fitness. Sounds too good to be true, but hey, it is! The key though is that you do the taper CORRECTLY. And in this episode, we break down everything you need backed by the studies to best structure your taper. We cover how long your taper should be, how to not lose fitness in a taper, and how to maximize your taper so that you get the best recovery on race day. Ian Gonzalez is a trailblazer. He co-founded 7 on Sundays,  a run crew on Chicago's South Side, an area where running as a pastime had been virtually nonexistent. 7 on Sundays created a community of runners, but there was nowhere for them to buy running shoes, clothes, or nutrition. Ian filled that void by opening Last Lap Cornerstore, the only running store on the South Side, and the only Black/Latino-owned running store in the city. He was forced to close the store, but is determined that Last Lap will return to serve the area's runners.  For complete show notes and links, visit our website at runningforreal.com/episode388.   Thank you to HydraPak, AG1, and Tracksmith for sponsoring this episode.  HydraPak is the number one original equipment manufacturer of reservoirs and soft flasks in the world. Even if you follow the best training plan for your next ultra, our minds can work against us to fall short of our running goal. And when you develop this mindset shift, it will allow you to achieve any ultrarunning goal you set yourself towards. And yes, it sounds like it's clickbait, but I credit this mindset shift to a majority of the progress I've made in my ultrarunning career. The Story of a Brand

This episode is brought to you by Sendlane and Mercury.   HydraPak is a performance hydration brand focused on hikers, bikers, and cyclists says president and CEO Matt Lyon. The company, which has three brands, has been around for 20 years.   "I don't know if we would have made it if we were a VC model because the first five years were pretty rough," Matt says. "But what that really taught us was figuring out what we did uniquely and where we brought value to the table. And I always say figure out what people desire, and you have to get in between, what they desire and what the solution is."   HydraPak has three brands: hydration reservoirs, bicycle bottles, and effervescent cleaning tablets (for cleaning steel bottles).   Much of HydraPak's success is due to the long-term relationships with suppliers, employees, and customers. That goes for the competition too.   "The people I was competing with on day one are still the companies I'm competing with today," Matt says. "So as much as we innovate and do new things, it's been a very consistent marketplace. We've just been fortunate to grow from being a start-up to being one of the significant players in this space."   An early challenge that faced HydraPak was the pressure to produce products similar to market leaders. Matt says it was his instinct toward differentiation that allowed HydraPak to survive ultimately.   In Part 1, Matt talks about:   * Gratitude toward his father for inspiring the idea to start a company and continued support. * Why the brand wasn't a good fit with the venture capital business model. * The focus of the company's three brands. * The consistency of the marketplace. * How the company's launch came right after the Sept. 11 tragedies and how it became a good time for him to start a business. * How he temporarily turned his back on his instinct to focus on differentiation in the beginning days of the company. * How his involvement in the company helped through his involvement as a runner and cyclist. * The effect of the COVID pandemic on HydraPak.   Join Ramon Vela and Matt Lyon as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on HydraPak, visit: https://hydrapak.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This episode is brought to you by Sendlane and Mercury.   Starting HydraPak in the wake of the 9-11 tragedy might have given the business an added bump, says Matt Lyon, president, and CEO of the hydration brand for athletes.   "All things considered, if you're trying to start a business and in the middle of an expansion and everybody's running around doing everything they can, you've got to do everything just to get their attention," Matt says. "Trying to do it when things are slow, and people have stopped, and they're standing there, and they're looking around, that's the great time to get their attention and a great time introducing them to something new."   The lightbulb moment, Matt says, was when he realized that backpack manufacturers already made great products - they just didn't understand the hydration and plumbing side. Partnering up to help solve that problem was the open door they needed to find.   "Water always boils down to something simple, right? It's you don't want to spend too much weight on it. You don't want to spend too much time. You've got to clean it. So simple things always work better," Matt says. And so when you boil it down to these simple elements, it's usually just one or two things that really work better for what you're doing versus something else. And yeah, you can get by with something else. You could get but, but it's those one or two features that really can make your experience better. So I'd say I start with the question, What are you doing? What are you using it for? And probably make something just for you.   In Part 2, Matt talks about:   * How great businesses can be born during recessions and downtimes. * How focusing on hydration solutions helped drive innovations in HydraPak's products. * Sticking to their guns despite initial resistance from brands made all the difference. * Why he enjoys talking to athletes at consumer events and professional athletes at larger companies. * How the brand's focus has allowed them to specialize over time.   Join Ramon Vela and Matt Lyon as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on HydraPak, visit: https://hydrapak.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This week we chat with Lindsey Ulrich. Lindsey recently ran the Fastest Known Time for the Oregon section of the Pacific Crest Trail. We hear about how she got into running ultras, how a stroke eight years ago was ultimately a big part of what led her to attempt this huge undertaking, and what it was like to be moving her body down a trail surrounded by a support crew for 9 days, 13 hours, 39 minutes and 20 seconds! It was an honor to hear Lindsey's story and we hope you're as inspired by it as Stef and I were! Show Notes: Read Lindsey's write up on the FKT website here www.pctoregon.com is a neat resource for information for the PCT! @theneuronerds - a podcast and support group for people that have experienced a brain injury #changethefaceofstroke Coach: Paul Lind.
