Can investing in our Oceans save our Planet? Have you ever heard of the Blue Economy? Do you know how much of the carbon we create or heat we create, gets absorbed by the ocean? Have you ever seen the “Colossal Squid”?- because our guest is on a lifelong mission to find it and film it in it's natural environment. The ocean covers 70% of the planet, but very little of our historic innovations in energy or technology comes from our Oceans. Matt Mulrennan, Director of Investments at the Sustainable Ocean Alliance and it's sister Fund, Seabird Ventures joins Rob to go deep into the emerging field of ocean investing and how sustainable solutions are shaping the blue economy alongside our fast growing “Green Economy.” Matt teaches a masterclass on some incredible data and history, of mammals, other ocean species, the importance of the ocean in our climate crisis, the massive value of the Ocean in our economy, and his own career arc from Expeditionary researcher to Ocean-Blue Economy investor. He tells a few stories of adventurous expeditions he's led in marine preservation across some of the earths most remote places, such as Antarctica, while educating us on the ocean's role in climate regulation and food production. He teaches us that the ocean's impact on our lives and our economies is massive, yet it's just beginning to be explored as an investment frontier. Julia Marsh is the CEO and co-founder of Sway, a clean tech startup scaling seaweed-based, home-compostable packaging. Sway's patented products match the vital performance attributes of conventional plastics and are designed to plug into existing infrastructure, enabling scale and massive impact. Julia's work is driven by a deep passion for regenerative design and biological circularity.  In 2023, Sway won first place in the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize. In 2021, Sway also won the Beyond the Bag Challenge sponsored by Closed Loop Partners and a consortium of major retailers. Sway's solutions have garnered recognition from Vogue, Condé Nast, Forbes, Business Insider, and Fast Company. As a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, the Sustainable Ocean Alliance, and 1% for the Planet, Sway is working holistically to scale their product for a thriving, equitable future. Learn more at swaythefuture.com.  In this episode, we discuss: ●      Why recycling won't fix our plastic problem ●      The properties of seaweed that make it a flexible plastic film substitute ●      The “Amazon Rainforest” ecosystem you never considered  Key Takeaways: ●      Seamless Integration for Easy Adoption: Introducing a new material into established supply chains and factory processes can be challenging. Take a page out of the Sway playbook. If possible, create a plug-and-play solution that works with existing machinery. This lowers the barrier for manufacturers to test and adopt the new product, making it significantly easier to scale and implement across their industry. ●      Understanding Product Lifecycles: To truly grasp the benefits and costs of any product, it's crucial to examine its entire lifecycle. Take plastic, for example. The visible litter on beaches is just the tip of the iceberg. Microplastics in our oceans and bloodstreams are harming marine life and human health. The environmental impact of extracting petroleum for plastic production, and the long-lasting waste clogging our landfills, are often hidden from view but equally damaging. Out of sight should not mean out of mind—these unseen costs are critical to our understanding of plastic's true impact. ●      The Power of Innovative Thinking: We need more people like Julia innovating new ways to do things. People who question the status quo. People who notice the cost of continuing to do things the same way, and aren't ok with that cost. People that are curious enough to lean in, tinker, and innovate new solutions that are better for everyone. The next time you notice something off, don't dismiss it. Instead, explore it—maybe you're the one who will come up with the next groundbreaking solution. Your curiosity could lead to innovations that make a better future.  References: ●      Connect with Julia on LinkedIn ●      Sway ○      Keep up with Sway on Instagram ●      Tom Ford Plastic Innovation Prize ●      Lonely Whale ●      Beyond the Bag Challenge Connect & Share: If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? You probably already know why coral reefs are so important—after all, they're home to a quarter of all marine life. But do you know about seagrass?  Seagrass not only provides habitat for aquatic wildlife, but it accounts for 10% of oceanic carbon storage, despite only taking up less than one percent of the seafloor. It also produces oxygen, cleans the ocean, protects against coastal erosion and more. Sadly, humanity is destroying both coral reefs and seagrass forests, with oceanic warming and acidification taking a major toll, along with pollution and fishing. Because of us, the world's already lost half of all corals and a third of all seagrass just in the past few decades.  But what if humanity could be as effective at growing reefs and seagrass as we are at destroying them? Proving that is the goal of Reefgen, a startup pioneering not SaaS (software as a service) business model, but rather RaaS (robots as a service) business model. Reefgen has invented robots that can navigate marine environments with precision and plant baby grass and corals at rates that are orders of magnitude faster than a human could.  And there's a business in this RaaS model. Not only are companies that want to pay for eco-offsets willing to pay to robotically plant new reefs and grassbeds, but so do companies that economically depend on vibrant ocean ecosystems for their livelihoods.  Reefgen CEO Chris Oakes, a marine biologist turned venture capitalist turned entrepreneur talks about the company's trajectory, its pilot trials in Hawaii, California, Indonesia, and Wales, and how it's going to scale in order to turn the tides for our planet. Discussed in this episode Our past episodes with Coral Vita (coral restoration) and Drone Seed (forest restoration). BBC on Reefgen's seagrass work in Wales. ReefGen was birthed from Good Machines Studio. Reefgen's pending patent application Chefs using seagrass for rice! Chris recommends reading Why Startups Fail and Getting Things Done. More about Chris Oakes Christopher Oakes is a marine biologist who specializes in deep-tech product commercialization and corporate development. Oakes holds a B.A. and M.A. in Biology from Occidental College. Oakes has dedicated his career to molecular tools and diagnostics, robotics, sustainable aquaculture and venture building. As CEO of Reefgen, he is setting the company's vision around mechanizing nearshore planting operations and strategic direction to meet the scale of ecosystem restoration market needs in the face of climate change. During his time at Occidental, Chris worked with the Vantuna Research Group focusing on life history studies of nearshore marine fishes, marine environmental monitoring, time series analysis and spatial modeling. Today, we're taking a deep dive into the ocean. Oceans are central to our planet's climate system. They regulate temperatures, host a vast array of biodiversity, and here's a crucial point - they absorb about a quarter of all CO2 emissions, acting as a massive carbon sink. But this isn't without consequence. Ocean acidification is a direct result of climate change. It's a silent crisis happening beneath the waves, triggering a mass extinction of coral reefs and the diverse ecosystems that depend on them. And, then there's the crisis of plastics – 10 million tons of plastic enter the ocean each year. These threats are real and immediate, but so is the potential for innovation. In this episode, we're joined by two people working hard to restore ocean health. Brandon Levy is Chief Product Officer at the Sustainable Ocean Alliance, and Bodhi Patil is an activist and organizer who founded Ocean Uprise, a platform enabling thousands of young people to support ocean activism.

Join us as we talk to Trond Wuellner, Director of Product Management at YouTube, an investor in more than 25 early stage businesses as an active member of the Hustle Fund Angel Squad, and a board member of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance. In this podcast, we talk about the growing creator economy and Trond's previous experience at Google and YouTube, from learning about managing people from Sheryl Sandberg to his advice for aspiring product managers. Growth in tooling and media platforms has created an explosion in content from the creator economy by enabling regular people to showcase their passions, whether it's your friend's Instagram of their meal at Zahav or Charli d'Amelio's TikTok dances. While there was once an insurmountable editing barrier to creating professional content, creators can now use AI programs to remove pesky background noises; where it was once tough to monetize a growing channel, there are now programs to help convert virality into physical merchandise, vibrant fan communities, and other opportunities to earn. The next online sensation could easily be that podcast about cooking you've thought of starting! Trond is at the forefront of these developments with his work at YouTube. We talk about the megatrends in the creator economy that are enabling an emerging “middle class” of participants, and how the effectiveness of tools has shifted the focus of media back to the storyteller and as a result returned the emphasis to authenticity and transparency. People are creators by nature, eager to tell their own stories, and now the growing ecosystem is allowing this community to think of themselves as businesses. The ability to monetize and adapt content to a captive audience is creating a flywheel effect that powers continued growth in the industry. We also delve into Trond's experience at Google and the most important lessons he got from Sheryl Sandberg about people management. We talk about the a-ha moments that led to his decision to lead projects on GoogleFi, reflections on his extensive experience in product management and most importantly, how to listen to your users. Welcome to the inaugural episode of The Ocean Embassy, where I interview engineers, scientists, researchers, policymakers and everyone in between and beyond, that all advocate for our oceans in one way or another. From exploring the deep sea, to building robots that grow macroalgae, to voicing concerns and targets at government levels on a daily basis — there are so many ocean champions out there. Today's guest is someone I admire very much. I met Jeremy when we were both Ocean Discovery Fellows at the All Hands on Deck conference at MIT Media Lab in November 2018. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association in the United States is one of the leading ocean exploration research institutes and holds a conference dedicated to a specific marine field of study annually. In 2018, however, the conference was a bit different. That year, it took place at the MIT Media Lab, an incredible interdisciplinary technology and design institute at the infamous MIT in Boston. It was organised by the Open Ocean Initiative led by Katy Croff Bell — who we will, by the way, welcome here on the podcast soon, too – and it was a complete shift from what conferences I had been at usually looked like. The spirit of interdisciplinary work, the urgency of collaboration and high level of youth presented was amazing. The fact that there were so many diverse and young people present at a conference we could have usually never afforded, was thanks to a fund for so-called Ocean Discovery Fellows, young ocean leaders and explorers from around the world, which, as I mentioned, both Jeremy and I were. Jeremy is from the Seychelles and studied Environmental Science and International Relations in Cape Town and Dresden, and when we met in 2018 he was working for the Seychelles Island Foundation as a project coordinator in education and outreach, biodiversity and logistics. Since March of this year, he lives in New York and is a Fellow of the Alliance of Small Island States, AOSIS. Throughout these last years, he has built an impeccable network advocating for small island states, for the oceans as a resource and ecosystem, and I've seen a lot of pictures of him in UN conference rooms. He is a Young ocean leader and was a member of the Inaugural Youth Policy Advisory Council at the Sustainable Ocean Alliance. We talk about the ways in which the ocean has shaped Jeremy's life, work and future, and how technology has built empathy around all of it. We discuss ways in which technology could improve ocean protection in the future and how important it is that some people make the move from field work to diplomacy at the highest levels. At just 19 years of age, Daniela Fernandez found herself sitting in a United Nations chamber listening to a myriad of scary statistics regarding the likely fate of our ocean planet. Two things quickly became apparent to her. First, she noticed she was the ONLY young voice in the room, the only young person in the conversation. Second, while there was a great deal of fear being projected, there was very little talk in terms of hope, inspirational dialogue or innovative solutions. So as legend goes, she decided to start the Sustainable Ocean Alliance from her Georgetown University dorm room, which in only 6 short years has become the largest network of young Ocean Leaders in the world with more than 5,000 participants in over 165 countries.  She is now CEO. Daniela has been recognized for her work by former US Sec'y of State and current US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry and former US President Bill Clinton. She also received accolades with a Peter Benchley Ocean Youth Award, named one of Glamour magazine's College Women of the Year, and was selected as a Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur, and has spoken on countless stages, including the Economist World Ocean Summit and Global Climate Summit.  LEARN MORE ABOUT DANIELA FERNANDEZ AND SUSTAINABLE OCEAN ALLIANCE here:    Follow Daniela on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dvfernandez/ Follow SOA on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/soalliance/ Check out the SOA Website: https://www.soalliance.org/ SOA Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SustainableOceanAlliance Connect with Daniela on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dvfernandez Follow Daniela on Twitter: https://twitter.com/dvfernandez1?lang=en SOA on Twitter: https://twitter.com/soalliance SOA Who We Are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwZHhuprYI4 Rising Star Award: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSxOlqrgYw8 Nat Geo Encounter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sH8AVsLl9rI   Youth Voices: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1yxHb2-P1E SOA Blue New Deal: https://www.soalliance.org/blue-new-deal SOA Leadership: https://www.soalliance.org/leadership   “I came across the greatest victim and potential savior of our planet. Global temperatures would be soaring even higher were it not for a powerful heat-trapping ally: oceans. From regulating the temperature of the planet to generating half of the oxygen we breathe, oceans are a vital part of sustaining life on Earth. Increasing their temperature as little as two degrees, however, has an opposite effect, threatening marine biodiversity and turbocharging dangerous hurricanes and typhoons. But there are bright prospects on the horizon for humans and oceans. Join us for a conversation exploring how oceans play a bigger role in climate than you may think. Cal checks in with one of his favorite people in the world, 25-year-old Daniela Fernandez, who has devoted her life to saving the world’s oceans. If you don’t think that’s important, it’d be wise to look at some facts. There’s an island of garbage twice the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean, which may be a long way from where you are right now but it affects you. Fifty percent of the oxygen we breathe is created by the ocean. That’s every second breath you take. We’re slowly choking ourselves. The non-profit organization that Daniela founded to heal the oceans, Sustainable Ocean Alliance, was down to its last penny when an anonymous donation of $1 million came to the rescue. This is an awesome story of a young woman’s unwavering devotion to make a difference, and how the world will be changed because of her. Applying her mindset just might allow you to do the extraordinary, as well.

Attending the Opening Oceans Conference, which creates a roadmap for maritime business leaders to explore the new ocean economy options, discover synergies with their existing businesses, meet investment and gateway partners and make profitable strategic decisions, in Copenhagen early May 2018, I met Daniela Fernandez, a passionate young woman who wants to engage young people in innovation, change and new ideas about how to use the Ocean space. Daniela is the Founder & CEO of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance.  After having been invited to several gatherings with Heads of States and people from the United Nations, she asked herself "Why am I the only young person in the room?" and started to think about how the two worlds can come together. Now the Sustainable Ocean Alliance consists of 75 chapters in 50 countries, where each chapter gathers 15-300 youth leaders. Listen to Daniela and give her a shoutout in social media, what she is doing is so meaningful and necessary, so you need to get involved yourself. And don't forget to look into the new buzzwords, incubator, accelerator, and corporate accelerator. You need to know these terms and what they stand for. I am @lenagothberg in all social channels and I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for listening!
