On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking with two more of the winners of the Golden Scissors Awards. These new awards recognize excellence in the crafts industry and are given out annually at h+h americas. Nominations were open to everyone and the winners were determined by an independent panel of judges made up of craft industry professionals. In this second episode, we'll hear the stories of our Innovation Award, Masey Kaplan and Jen Simonic of The Loose Ends Project. These two co-founders have come up with an organization that eases grief, creates community, and inspires generosity. The Loose Ends Project matches volunteer handwork finishers with projects people have left unfinished due to death or disability and now has more than 20,000 volunteers globally who have completed 2,000 projects. We'll also hear the story of our Social Impact Award winner, Allyson Allen. Allyson is the organizer of the Piece-ful Protest Quilt Exhibit which features 36 quilted textiles of protest art. Recognized by the State of California as an award-winning Master African American textile artist and culture bearer, she organized this exhibit to be shown in Laguna Beach California where it had a significant impact in furthering the understanding of open-minded diversity and inclusivity. We hope you are inspired by both Masey and Jen's and Allyson's stories! Nominations for the 2025 Golden Scissors Awards will open early in the year and we encourage you to nominate yourself or someone else, and to attend the awards ceremony at h+h americas in Chicago May 7-9, 2025.

Chuck C was from from Laguna Beach California, he was 36 years sober at the time of this speak. Chuck was highly regarded as a speaker over the many years he was an active member of AA, he is also a pretty funny guy. This speak took place at an unknown meeting held in Houston Texas in June of 1982. It is an excellent quality recording. He one of my personal favorites. Chuck is also credited as the author of the book "A New Pair of Glasses" in reality it is a transcript of a speak he gave at a mens retreat in 1975. Sadly the recording is pretty awful, a couple of years ago I attempted to reach Chuck's son to see if he would be willing to grant the rights to have it re-recorded and I was hoping he would be willing to do the recording (if you know who he is you can understand why). Unfortunately as hard as I tried I was never able to reach him, so on the slim chance any of you have his contact info please reach out. If you want to give the book a read it is out of print but lots of copies are still floating around. It is not AA approved literature but its really excellent http://amzn.to/2FKdg9V The "A New Pair of Glasses" audio is also available on Sober Cast but it was posted quite a while ago, if you have any issues finding it please just let me know and Ill repost it. I just added the Crested Butte Montana Conference to the events list, this is a 5 day event and it sells out every year. The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
Midweek kudos to you for rolling in early today! It's Wednesday and we are talking about the government right to repair acronyms, Rivian taking the ever inventive dealership route, and AI images staying in the game for the long haul. There's a new agreement for automotive right-to-repair between automakers and independent repair shops. The updated commitment affirms the previous 2014 “memo of understanding” and includes telematics data. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the Automotive Service Association and the Society of Collision Repair Specialists said the deal means that repair shops will have access to the same diagnostic and repair information as authorized dealer networks, and covers all vehicle technologies, including BEV, PHEV and FCV.There are currently 2 bills in Congress that consider right-to-repair.The REPAIR Act (Right to Equitable and Professional Auto Industry Repair) would mandate that owners and independent shops have the same access to tools and data as the dealer network, and those tools and equipment be made available to the independent repair industry. The SMART Act (Save Money on Auto Repair Transport) would reduce the time automakers can enforce patents on collision repair parts against aftermarket parts suppliers from 14 yrs to 2.5 yrs.The 3 groups sent a letter to Congressional leaders saying that “It should reassure you that independent repairers and automakers are not at odds on automotive data access, but rather in lockstep on this fundamental principle: Consumers should have choice when it comes to repair options.”As EV adoption continues its slow growth, Rivian is using a familiar tactic to get their trucks in front of consumers, opening its first “Spaces” showroom in Vancouver. The “dealership” will be located at The Amazing Brentwood shopping mall and is part of Rivian's goal of increasing its physical retail presence. Each Space is designed behind a casual experience with no hard selling. The automaker plans to have Spaces in downtown NYC, Austin TX, Laguna Beach CA and the Vancouver location. All Spaces will be unique, some featuring green areas, augmented reality, or being built out of an old theater. In the next year, Rivian is expected to announce the R2 series, consisting of a crossover and a Ford Maverick-sized pickup. The R2s are expected to be priced in the 40K-60K range, which is around 30K cheaper than the R1 models. In contrast to other image-sharing platforms, Shutterstock is all-in on AI, extending its partnership with Open AI for another 6 years. The AI company has been training its DALL-E image model using Shutterstock's library since 2021.Last year, Shutterstock added Open AI's image generator on its website, banning the sale of AI images that weren't created with DALL-E. They created a “Contributor Fund” to compensate artists when their art is used to train the model. They are also planning to bring AI features to Giphy.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Julie Brown Yau, Ph.D. specializes in developmental trauma, intergenerational trauma, and acute trauma, and has a unique perspective on integrating spirituality into trauma healing. She's an author, speaker, and the Trauma and Spiritual Care consultant for Compassionate Care ALS. Her background in psychological, somatic, and spiritual traditions provides a rich combination of knowledge. She has a private practice in Laguna Beach, California, and sees clients virtually from all around the world. Julie is also a NARM Therapist and was in the first North American NARM training with Dr. Laurence Heller. She integrates NARM into her work to support clients in healing from complex trauma. Julie is also an authorized teacher of Shri Vidya, which combines the resolution of trauma with spiritual practice. Julie explains that Shri Vidya are embodied teachings, and that a lot of spiritual teachings do not include embodiment, at least not in an explicit way. Julie shares about how she weaves together spirituality and trauma healing and how they support one another. “Healing trauma begins to look spiritual as we open up and go beyond our ordinary sense of self.” Julie distinguishes spiritual healing as “waking up to our true nature and being with expanded states of consciousness. Whereas trauma healing is about grounded and embodied states of being.” Julie shares with the listeners deep experiences she has had with people she's been working with. “What comes forward right now is people having an experience of their heart opening, to feeling not only love, but grief or pain or sadness, and directly in a field in which they're more able to be with it because both in these teachings of awakening and in healing trauma, we want to be able to feel more.” This is very aligned with the NARM Emotional Completion Model, which teaches that as individuals connect to their unresolved emotions, they are connecting to themselves; they are connecting to that which they had to split off from in order to survive. This is a reclaiming of one's wholeness, which is what Julie supports in working with trauma healing and spirituality. Bio: Julie Brown Yau, Ph.D., has a 33-year background in psychological, somatic, and spiritual traditions, providing a unique depth of knowledge and experience. Julie specializes in developmental trauma, intergenerational, and acute trauma. She is an author and speaker, and also the trauma and spiritual care consultant for CCALS. After struggling with addiction and alcoholism for forty years, Chuck Chamberlain found himself with a ruined career, devasted family, and even the grave. Upon his first alcohol-induced death he was warned by his doctors that they could not bring him back to life if he died again. In the throes of alcoholism, he did just that, he died again. Miraculously the doctors restored his life a final time. Chuck was different upon his return this time. Something about him changed. This is his story of an ever-advancing spirituality including abstaining from chemical intoxicants, restoring his family, and ultimately rebuilding his career into one of material abundance. Chuck died a very wealthy man in Laguna Beach California in every way manageable. He pulls his spiritual strength from the Bible and the twelve-step program Alcoholics Anonymous. The sound quality is not great. It was recorded in the 1970s. I cleaned it up as much as I could. Chuck C was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He drank himself to death twice. Miraculously he was revived after the second death against all medical understanding of his time. He was in his forties at the time of his second death and died a multi-millionaire in Laguna Beach California. With the first half of his life spent in an alcoholic haze and destroying all his relationships, including those of his family, he died with his family reunited and happy. His life went from rock bottom and death to an abundant experience in all measures. He attributes all of this to his spiritual journey and the principles he learned in life. These talks are full of wisdom no matter your life situation or beliefs. This was recorded in the 1970s so the audio is antique, to say the least. Sly Dawg aka Steven Chew is a born and bread Surf Core human from Laguna Beach California. Sly is one of the coolest characters around and it was an honor to have him back on the Show. Growing up in Laguna Beach, Sly has always been a surf legend. Being sponsored at a young age and catching the surf bug when he was young allowed him to travel the world and go to secluded surf spots. This was way before the Internet and all we had was a few photos and epic tales of Surf Safari Adventure to be shared by firelight. Sly had been a nomadic Surf gypsy for decades now...Bringing to fruition the article written about him and his friend "Frogger" called "The Dharma Bums" by Surfer Magazine editor and Laguna Beach local Chris Mauro. In this article Mauro paints a picture of Sly and Froggers life as elite boat captains of then private and very secret island called Tavarua, off the coast of Fiji. Sly has lived a life of Surf, Travel and adventure. But through all of it he has still maintained the lovable, super sonic, wacky, unique surfy style that we all love about him. Sly is always involved with the community....weather he's planning a surf contest with the local Surf Shop (LS&S) or running his fabulous Wacky insanely popular Surf Camps....Sly keeps it light and fun. I checked in with Sly in the beginning of the Pandemic to see how he was adjusting...we had a great conversation...but I somehow erased it. (it was bound to happen). :-( So we decide to do it again... and everything worked out. Times are crazy and all these beach closures are starting to take a toll. I checked in with Sly to see how his Quarantine was going...plus he had just moved into a beautiful new treehouse tucked back into the hill of Bluebird Canyon. Here is my conversation with the one and only.. SLY DAWG!

Alan Fuerstman started his career in the hotel industry as a doorman at a Marriott in New Jersey. He then worked his way up to captain of the bell stand, and then onto major hotels across the country, then helping Steve Wynn at the Bellagio. He then came up with an idea for a new type of hotel. It would be an ultra-luxury property that allowed people to be causal, not stuffy like the other luxury hotels of the time. He called it Montage, and built it in Laguna Beach California. And he was right. It set the standard for a new type of luxury property, and is now one of the most well-known ultra-luxury brands in the industry, with multiple properties around the world.
