Hair-care startup Crown Affair has had a big couple of years. After launching in January 2020, Crown Affair entered Sephora in 2022. The brand's profile has grown as Crown Affair's products have made the rounds on social media, most notably with Doja Cat donning the brand's hair towel on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet. This year, the brand aims to do around $30 million in revenue, up from $20 million last year. And one of the people who has been instrumental in helping Crown Affair hit bigger and bigger milestones is Elaine Choi, who joined the company shortly before its launch as its founding president and COO. Recently, Choi was elevated to CEO, and she joined the Modern Retail Podcast to talk about her vision for Crown Affair this year. Dianna Cohen is the founder of Crown Affair. The company's goal is to help people redefine their relationship with their hair and build new hair rituals with high-quality basics, like “the oil” and “the dry shampoo.” Many of the Crown Affair's customers were introduced to the brand through Cohen's videos on TikTok and Instagram, where she has amassed tens of thousands of followers, and shares everything from hair-care tips to behind-the-scenes looks at product development. "[Cohen is the] creative, visionary founder, and she needed an operator to come in and work with her and launch the brand," Choi said. "So we got connected through a mutual friend. … It was just, like, an instant kismet connection.” Choi ended up joining the brand four months prior to launch, moving from her hometown of Los Angeles to New York to work on Crown Affair. In the more than five years that she's been with Crown Affair, Choi has been responsible for the operations side and, overall, making sure the brand is moving where it needs to go. Choi, a former cross-country athlete, likened the process to preparing for a race. “You know where the finish line is, but how are you setting those milestone markers to keep you going?” she said. “I remember I would practice for a race, and there was always, like, a tree at the one-mile mark. And I was like, 'OK, cool. So I just have to get to that tree in this amount of time, and then I'm on track.' And that was kind of like the beginning stages [of building Crown Affair].” Now, as CEO, Choi said she's focused on a few key markers: helping the brand grow through increased distribution as Crown Affair launches in more Sephora stores, honing in on what marketing tactics are working, and keeping Crown Affair's employees happy and focused as the business continues to evolve.
Crown Affair's hair products are in the bathrooms (and kits) of so many people who love and work in the beauty industry. How did that happen? Founder Dianna Cohen is here to explain. She shares lessons she learned working on some of the hottest “millennial” brands of the 2010s (Into The Gloss, Away, Outdoor Voices, Harry's); why marketing isn't the most important part of building a brand; the difference between hair *care* and hair styling; and why she thinks clips, scrunchies, and combs should be as elegant looking as your other accessories. Photo by Cassandra Nelson / UNSOM. Plastics are pretty much inescapable these days, and that's no mistake. The plastics industry has flooded our lives with countless single-use product, from bags, to food packaging, to drink bottles. This plastic now fills our landfills, litters our coastlines, and permeates our bodies. And still, the plastics industry creates more, pointing to plastics recyclability as the solution to our mounting plastic pollution crisis. Of course, recycling isn't the solution they claim it is. Only 9 percent of the plastic that has been pumped into the world since 1950 has been recycled. And here in the US, only about 5 percent of the single-use plastic products we use today are recycled. As the scale of the crisis grows, environmental advocates have started taking plastic producers and distributors to court for their role in deceiving the the public and driving the crisis we now find ourselves in. Sumona Majumdar, Chief Executive Officer of Earth Island Institute, and Dianna Cohen, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Plastic Pollution Coalition, join Terra Verde Host and Earth Island Journal Managing Editor Zoe Loftus-Farren to talk about these efforts The post Taking Big Plastic to Court appeared first on KPFA.

I'll never forget the first time I saw a Pantene ad. The silky, luscious, and thick hair on the models couldn't be more different from my own hair, but instantly became an ideal of what society considered beautiful. It carried me through the many emotional stages of my hair - extensions, the post breakup chop, multiple colors (who can relate?) - all to achieve that bounce that could be seen from a mile away. But as a now 28-year-old, I've figured out the most essential truth when it comes to hair - less is more. Diana Cohen's Crown Affair is leading that message, disrupting the haircare industry that has notoriously sold chemical-based products and damaging styles with simple products, clean ingredients, and routines and rituals that nourish your hair from within. The Crown Affair Hair Oil has landed on every best-seller list, even catching the eye of the brand's newest investor Gwyneth Paltrow, and the brand is a bestseller at Goop and Sephora. In this episode, Diana shares her experience navigating the haircare industry, her own routines, and how she's built a community around self-care. Dianna Cohen founded Crown Affair, a hair-care brand, in early 2020 after years working behind the scenes at millennial startups such as Away, Outdoor Voices and Harry's. Although Crown Affair is relatively new it's already earned a respectable place on many top shelves— its sleek branding, aesthetic and product line ranges from hair brushes, thoughtful towels, https://cna.st/affiliate-link/K3zshu2iNQ6MVnH5umy2jgXH9Ssuf8jyurvhRm9fNPu9UWTKrJAtqcFMEt8CjyDQEELPco3CreGCHVVGyHsx6WrqrUPMjAsymrDzZWHqZjTQQbtd1ac9o2C7ryGtmSsycj3?cid=61aa50a4140ff57c06f465c5&xid=fr1648678611302gef (shampoo and conditioner) etc. https://cna.st/affiliate-link/C8EegXATswqY43NngZEY338vPehLEYi1zRjCVc4moiFTT5xTR194exjFiCVBZ8WK5vpqm4yuiBV1eYYuNdQxY7oSfahjUmbVUzNBnivCNMjDjrin?cid=61aa50a4140ff57c06f465c5&xid=fr1648678611302gjd (The Renewal Mask)—which is currently sold out everywhere. In a notoriously saturated market, new beauty brands need more than just a solid formula to stand out. They need transformative ideas that go beyond the product itself. When Dianna Cohen set out to create Crown Affair, she wanted high-quality hair care that was more than just another clean product in a pretty bottle. She wanted to turn hair care into a special moment, rooted in ritual. You know, those little daily practices that make or break your morning—those personal moments that help you feel calm, collected, and whole. Though Crown Affair is relatively new to the market, it has earned a respectable spot disrupting the hair care space thanks to its clean and innovative products, and Dianna's commitment to the craft of taking care—both in hair care and business practices. On this week's episode of WorkParty, we're joined by Dianna Cohen, my good friend, and the founder and CEO of Crown Affair to chat about how she built the brand from the foundation of personal practice, and why it has played such an instrumental role in the success of the business. We talk about: The pre-Crown Affair career path that set Dianna up for success What makes her hair care routine so unique, and why creating a ritual was so important The moment she knew she was going to make the leap and launch Crown Affair How her art history background played a big role in the art direction of the brand The process of developing custom formulas vs. using contract manufacturing Tips to help you reach your hair care goals and Dianna's must-have hair products Dianna's secrets to success regarding company culture and mindful leadership Crown Affair's Seedling Mentorship Program on the power of community and connection The importance of hiring slow, firing fast, and finding seasoned professionals To join the WorkParty click HERE To connect with Dianna Cohen click HERE To connect with Jaclyn Johnson click HERE To learn more about Crown Affair click HERE To follow along with Create & Cultivate click HERE To submit your questions call the WorkParty Hotline: 1-(833)-57-PARTY (577-2789) Produced by Dear Media

When you reach for a bottle of shampoo in the shower, you may not be familiar with the brand founder -- or know if he or she actually uses the product. But as Crown Affair founder and CEO Dianna Cohen tells it, her hair-care line was launched as an extension of her own routine and the products that she recommended to her friends. She wanted to create a brand that fit within the "luxury world” of products she gravitated toward, said Cohen on the most recent episode of Glossy Beauty Podcast. “[With those products,] when you held the tool or used the product, it brought you joy. And it felt like a part of who you were.” Crown Affair's line includes scrunchies, hair oils, towels and combs, and aims to transform the health of customers' hair. This month, Crown Affair is venturing into tried-and-true hair must-haves, like shampoo and conditioner. And next year, it will launch in a national retailer. But above all, the brand, which remains digitally-focused, prides itself on its focus on community. "Our customer and community is the woman who is super dynamic. And she does care about her hair, but she has a lot of other things going on in her life," she said. The Crown Affair community is made up of its loyal customers and even non-customers, who learned about the brand by word-of-mouth. It also includes the 100 women who make up Seedling, the brand's mentorship development program. “If you're thinking about launching a brand into the world, one of the most powerful things that you can do is build a community,” she said. “That's [an] important lens as a founder, to [think], ‘How are you shopping for other things?' 'How are you finding out about products?'” said Cohen. “The only way to build authentic relationships is by taking time to build authentic relationships.”

Joining me on the show today is Dianna Cohen, the founder of haircare essentials startup, Crown Affair. Crown affair is a company that’s reimagining hair rituals and taking a considered approach for the top of your noggin. And this story all starts from an unassuming google doc. When Dianna decided to share her hair care routine with some women in her life - and that document suddenly went all over the internet -she saw an opportunity to innovate in a space that she had such a fond personal connection with, and bring her past industry experience in building brands for companies like Away, Outdoor Voices and The Wing into her DTC brand. Launched pre pandemic Dianna shares the lessons she’s been learning along the way, how she approached her pitch and the importance of community and storytelling. Dianna Cohen, the founder of one of my favorite haircare brands, Crown Affair, started the company after a Google doc detailing her hair care ritual became a sensation. Not only was it helpful, it became communal, with friends, and friends of friends, chiming in and telling their hair rituals. It became obvious there was something missing in the market, a brand that told stories, rather than promoting what someone’s hair should look like. Once she took a deep dive, she was horrified at her findings, and spent two years developing Crown Affair, launching with very high-quality products at a fraction of the usual market price. This episode is important for a few reasons, the first being this girl has worked at some of the best, most disruptive companies of our time. We discuss breaking into the job world, what it’s like to consult for other brands, the importance of social media, and she talk a shit ton about hair. And I’m going to go on record here and tell you, the hair oil is one of the single best products I have ever used in my lifetime, and I’m a greaseball that doesn’t use hair oil. Go follow this charming angel at @diannacohen and @crownaffair Produced by Dear Media
What comes to mind when you think of self-care or a better question yet, do you even have a self-care routine? We’re joined by Dianna Cohen, Founder of Crown Affair, a high-quality haircare line rooted in ritual. Dianna’s mission is to help women transform their self-care routine by instilling rituals, starting with one of the most neglected areas - your hair. Dianna is a queen in all things DTC e-commerce and has worked with amazing brands such as Away, Harry’s, and Outdoor Voices. Her passion for building brands and crafting narratives that connect with the consumer on a deeper level inspired Dianna to create her own brand, Crown Affair. If you want to build a product-based business in 2020, then listen up. We’re diving deep into what it means to create a brand with intention and how to craft a narrative that resonates with the consumer because it’s simply not enough to just have pretty packaging. You have to disrupt the larger industries by creating a unique line where each product is designed with meaning and Dianna is a pro at doing just that. Tune in as Dianna shares her journey of building beloved brands for other businesses to taking the leap and starting her own, one that helps people create long-lasting self-care rituals through high-quality and intentional products. Storytelling has always been inherent to Dianna Cohen, and now more than ever before, she’s breathing new life into the narrative around what it means to build a brand with intention. From her varied in-house experiences at global start-ups to servicing emerging players across fashion and lifestyle through her first company, Levitate, Dianna eventually found herself seeking refuge in self-care rituals, and more specifically, haircare. Dianna’s off-duty routines ultimately caught the attention of friends and family, and the culmination of her interests in brand discovery, wellness, and storytelling paved the way for Dianna to start Crown Affair—a next-generation haircare company rooted in ritual and committed to community. The latter has become especially important to Dianna and her team over the last few months as the world has reckoned with the effects of COVID-19, dismantling systemic racism, and enduring political tumult on all fronts. But for Dianna, this period of crisis has only strengthened her resolve to write a new and more inclusive chapter for the beauty industry. In this interview, Dianna shared more about the people who have shaped her conscious approach to storytelling, where she plans to take Crown Affair’s narrative next, and what she’s learned about changing her pace to push important conversations forward. This episode also opens with a story contributed by Samaris Pagán.

In the world of plastic pollution all roads really do lead to the PPC, they are a global organization with partners in healthcare, education, science, activism and even art. Moreover, understand what is at stake for ourselves, our children and our unborn babies. We come into constant contact with plastic everyday and this is exposure is directly related to breast cancer, brain cancer, prostate cancer, infertility, low sex-drive, diabetes, and obesity. While there are some things we cannot control, plastic pollution is a very controllable issue. Dianna Cohen, co-founder of the Plastic Pollution Coalition, speaks with Greg Stone about her mission to raise awareness about plastic pollution and ultimately create strategies that cut down the amount of plastic we use and throw away. She was inspired to co-found the group by her work as an artist -- because her chosen material is the ubiquitous plastic bag. But it was her love for the ocean that made Dianna aware just how plastic has become a blight on the planet. Soon she was an advocate for eliminating single-use plastic and now carries her message worldwide at gatherings of environmentalists and world leaders. Join acclaimed oceanographer and conservationist Dr. Greg Stone on a journey of understanding and hope through our oceans with The Sea Has Many Voices podcast: https://theseahasmanyvoices.com/ Greg Stone has been an advocate for ocean conservation, sustainable industry, and marine research for decades. Spreading these ideas requires conversation and collaboration if we want environmental sustainability. He currently serves as Chief Ocean Scientist and board director for DeepGreen Resources, where he is responsible for finding sustainable ways to extract metal-rich nodules from the seafloor of the Clipperton Fracture Zone to provide minerals needed for the global transition to renewable energy.
