In episode 84 of The Road to Wisdom Podcast Chloe & Keshia speak to Author Public Speaker & researcher Dr Paige Williams. We invited Paige on after coming across her book "Becoming Anti-Fragile". Anti-fragility is about embracing challenges as opportunities to grow stronger. Dr. Paige Williams explains how small, everyday struggles can build our resilience over time. These "paper cuts" might feel overwhelming in the moment, but they prepare us to handle larger disruptions with greater ease. Self-compassion is a vital part of parenting. Many parents feel the weight of societal pressures and expectations, leading to feelings of inadequacy or anxiety. Dr. Williams emphasizes the importance of being kind to ourselves and recognizing that parenting is a journey of learning and growth. By focusing on our choices and reconnecting with what truly matters, we can navigate this journey with greater confidence and intentionality. Parenting is not meant to be done alone. Collective support plays a crucial role in building resilience for both parents and children. Dr. Williams encourages creating a strong community where parents can share their challenges and support one another. Practical tools like the circles of control can also help parents focus on what they can influence, reducing overwhelm and fostering a sense of control. Flexibility is essential when navigating the gap between expectations and reality. Holding expectations loosely allows parents to adapt to the unpredictability of family life without unnecessary stress. At the same time, drawing on intergenerational wisdom can provide valuable guidance, blending the lessons of the past with the demands of modern parenting. Dr. Williams highlights the importance of breaking harmful societal norms, such as the "good girl syndrome," which affects both boys and girls. By challenging these stereotypes and modeling healthy behaviors, parents can lead their children toward a more resilient and empowered future. Parenting is a form of leadership, requiring boundaries, intentionality, and a commitment to raising emotionally healthy individuals. In essence, this conversation reminds us that while parenting can feel overwhelming at times, it also offers countless opportunities for personal growth, connection, and transformation. By embracing these principles, parents can not only navigate the challenges of today but also shape a stronger, more resilient next generation. My parents were immigrants – they're Greek. (9:50) • My dad's first job in America – he worked for free. (12:04) • [Growing up] Fun was when the fire department would open up the fire hydrants, and we'd run through them. That was “going to the pool.” (13:57) • I've always trusted my [inner] voice – whatever it is – intuition, instinct. I would listen to it. (18:22) • I'm brave if I'm in proximity of other brave people. (19:30) • When I applied to the Secret Service and before that, NYPD, I never asked what am I getting paid? (22:55) • Everything I was able to do, happened here, and there's no question in my mind, had I been born in Greece – I say this with all humility, there's no way I would've ever been a secret service agent, there's no way I would've ever been a cop. (39:20) • After 9/11, the tone changed significantly. [People became] very much supportive of first responders. (42:10) • [In the 9-11 experience] there were no injuries that day. You either lived, or you died. (59:51) • That was the saddest part, I thought “I'm gonna die all by myself here – completely alone.” (69:33) • Those situations show you who people really are. Even training won't reveal that, until you see who does what, and who's capable of what. (80:25) • [Marcus] The best comes out in everybody when we all get hit at the same time. (81:11) • [Marcus} I think 9-11 recreated a different kind of America. (84:38) • I never dealt with the victims, I dealt with the suspects and the perpetrators. (99:52) • I learned when I was an interviewer, certain countries torture certain ways. (110:04) • I think our next big attack is gonna be a cyber-attack. This episode features a conversation between Phil Dillard, Founder of Thruline Networks, and Janice Fraiser, an author, public speaker, and leading advisor to innovation executives and startup founders.A Silicon Valley veteran, Janice has built a storied career as a product manager, founder, facilitator, and confidant for entrepreneurs and enterprise executives alike. Her impact extends beyond Silicon Valley, with innovation and transformation projects at NASA, the Obama White House, Procter and Gamble, and many other companies in the Fortune 500. As an investor, she is particularly committed to championing and extending access to the brilliant entrepreneurs who are typically underrepresented in the world of venture-backed startups. In this episode, Janice talks about bettering organizations by shaping company culture, the challenges of measuring impact in philanthropic ventures, and how to avoid the unintended consequences of well-intentioned social efforts.—Guest Quote“I invite participation in what I think are good and better ways of being. I can't make someone want to be anything other than what they want to be. But, I can invite them to be bolder versions of what they want to be and go farther. So, the first thing that I do is I try to give people permission to just be themselves, to be flawed, to be audacious. And, I'm saying this, and as it comes out it sounds so trite, but there's nothing more powerful than seeing people. There's nothing more powerful than validating that their existence is real.” - Janice FraiserEpisode Timestamps(01:59) Janice's career(07:02) Contributing to social change(09:26) Shaping culture(20:17) Driving change for organizations(30:53) Relationship to capitalism(34:47) Avoiding unintended consequences(40:50) Challenges of measuring impact (42:37) Influential figures in the space(46:13) Final thoughtsLinksJanice Fraiser's LinkedInPhil Dillard's LinkedInThruline Networks
On this episode of Tips and Tricks Podcast, I speak with Meditation Coach and Public Speaker, Rich Lewis. Rich Lewis is an author, speaker and coach who focuses on centering prayer as a means of inner transformation. He teaches centering prayer in both his local and virtual community and offers one-on-one coaching. Rich's newest book is titled, "Sitting with God: A Journey To Your True Self Through Centering Prayer". In 2013, Rich began to dabble in silent prayer, a term that's often used as synonymous with centering prayer. He had heard and read that silence can transform you. He wanted to experience this transformation too. He forced himself to sit in silence. He began to test how long he could sit there. He started with one minute and increased it to three and even four minutes. It was difficult! Silence and silent prayer are counter-cultural. They are very challenging to cultivate because everything in our culture seems to point in another direction. Yet, surprisingly, it is in silence that he has has found profound transformation. And that is the motivation for writing this book. He wants to share what he has discovered. He publishes weekly meditations, book reviews, and interviews on his site, "Silence Teaches". He has published articles for a number of organizations, including Contemplative Light, Abbey of the Arts, Contemplative Outreach, EerdWord, In Search of a New Eden, the Ordinary Mystic at Patheos, and the Contemplative Writer. On this episode, Rich and I connected as talked about purpose, noise and when it all becomes to too loud. Finding your purpose is often rooted in finding yourself. We talked about how hard it can be to find yourself, when everything around you is telling you to listen to them. Tune in as Rich shares his secret of Silent Prayer and how it changed his life. Dr. David Pilgrim grew up in Mobil Alabama towards the end of the Jim Crow Era. It was there he got his first racist artifact and decades later he is still collecting. He is the founder and Director of the Jim Crow Museum, the nation's largest, publicly accessible collection of racist objects, located at Ferris State University where he serves as Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. Dr. Pilgrim, an applied sociologist with a doctorate from The Ohio State University, is a Ferris State University Distinguished Teacher. He has been interviewed by National Public Radio, Time magazine, the British Broadcasting Corporation, and dozens of newspapers, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times. Dr. Pilgrim is also the author of Understanding Jim Crow: Using Racist Memorabilia to Teach Tolerance and Promote Social Justice, Watermelons Nooses and Straight Razors, Haste to Rise, and The Klan Unmasked. Pilgrim's countless writings, many found at the Jim Crow Museum website, www.ferris.edu/jimcrow, are used by scholars, students, and civil rights and human rights workers to better understand historical and contemporary expressions of racism. His writings, scholarly and creative, deal with multiculturalism and race relations. His short stories have been published in Calaloo, Obsidian, African American Review, Aim, and Shooting Star. Pilgrim has been invited to deliver public lectures at dozens of institutions throughout the United States and Canada, challenging audiences to think deeply about diversity, inclusion, and race relations. Most recently, he also presented at NCORE - the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education. In 2004, Pilgrim produced, with Clayton Rye, the documentary Jim Crow's Museum to explain his approach to battling racism. The film won several awards including Best Documentary at the 2004 Flint Film Festival. Jim Crow's Museum has shown nationally on PBS affiliates including as part of the series The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross. He also served as a consultant to Will Smith on UPN's All of Us for the episode called "The N Word." Pilgrim and Carrie Weis, a Ferris State colleague, created two traveling exhibitions to take the Jim Crow Museum's lessons to a national audience. Hateful Things is a 39-piece traveling exhibition of objects found in the Jim Crow Museum. The objects are accompanied by didactic panels that place the images in a proper historical context—offering insight into their past and present popularity. Dr. Pilgrim is looking to expand the Jim Crow Museum as they are constantly getting donations of racist artifacts. Andrew Sharpless has led Oceana since 2003 as its CEO. Oceana, founded in late 2001, has grown in that time to be the largest international conservation organization fully dedicated to protecting the oceans. Oceana was launched by five ocean-conservation philanthropies, including Pew Charitable Trusts, Marisla and the Oak Foundation of Geneva and is still primarily funded by such groups. In 2002, Oceana merged with the American Oceans Campaign, founded by actor and environmentalist Ted Danson, to more effectively address a common mission of protecting and restoring the world's oceans. Based in Washington, D.C., Oceana and its global supporters, believes the world's oceans “are in crisis from overfishing, acidification, and habitat destruction [and] works internationally to alleviate these and other problems through policy-oriented campaigns.” Under his leadership, Oceana and its allies have protected nearly 4 million square miles of habitat and won more than 250 significant policy victories. Oceana campaigns have banned bottom trawling and offshore oil exploration in Belize, helping to protect the world's second-largest barrier reef system. Other victories have preserved unique habitats in Chile, made the seafood trade more transparent, and helped combat illegal fishing around the globe. Sharpless also led Oceana through the development and launch of Global Fishing Watch, an online platform that offers the first free global view of commercial fishing, in partnership with SkyTruth and Google. Sharpless holds degrees from Harvard Law School, the London School of Economics, and Harvard College. He previously served in leadership roles at Discovery.com, RealNetworks, and the Museum of Television & Radio in New York City sits on multiple boards and has authored several books. Our very special guest today is Author Jenny Boyd. Her new book is “Jennifer Juniper: a journey beyond the muse” and it is fascinating! This is one of those rare books where you get what you paid for - and then some - in good story! Mick Fleetwood says of Jenny Boyd's Autobiography, “Jennifer Juniper: a journey beyond the muse” - - -“The beautifully poignant story of a partner, mother, friend, and truly inspirational woman.” I love a good “personal journey” story. Jenny's story is a page turner, I can't imagine what it was to live it in real life! That's because Jenny Boyd has lived several lives, while the rest of us were just living one. In college, while getting her Masters in Counseling Psychology and a PhD in Humanities, her dissertation on musicians and creativity became the critically-acclaimed book “Musicians in Tune: 75 Contemporary Musicians Discuss the Creative Process.” Jenny Boyd is a muse to some of the most prolific musicians in the world. Let's think about that for a minute. What is a muse? A muse is a a person and a force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist. The artist-muse relationship has been around for centuries. These relationships are often romantic and always dramatic. Sometimes the muses have more to offer than inspiration, however, as did the following nine women. The muse also and usually Contributes substantial bodies of work of their own, in some cases becoming better known than their male partners. As a natural Flower Child, Jenny soon became part of the counter-cul- ture in San Francisco during the Flower Power era, witnessing the Sum- mer of Love; she was the inspiration for Donovan's famous song, Jen- nifer Juniper, and her photograph was featured inside the box set of his eponymous album A Gift from a Flower to a Garden. As an up-and-coming young model, Jenny found herself at the heart of Carnaby Street in London, immersed in the fashion and pop culture of the Swinging 60s. With boyfriend Mick Fleetwood, sister Pattie, George Harrison and the rest of the Beatles, she lived the London scene. Jenny attended Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram in India to study meditation with her sister and the Beatles, witnessing their creativity and the genesis of songs that would later appear on the White Album. Yes, she was there sharing the experiences with the Fab Four for the very best album of all time - The White Album! As an up-and-coming young model, Jenny found herself at the heart of Carnaby Street in London, immersed in the fashion and pop culture of the 60s. Her two marriages to Mick Fleetwood, founder member of Fleetwood Mac, brought her to the forefront of the world of rock and roll – and its fame, money, drugs and heartache. Jenny has spent her life in the company of some of the greatest musical and cultural influencers of the last 50 years – and the journey she takes to finding her own sense of self and creative ability makes “Jennifer Juniper: a journey beyond the muse” a truly captivating and inspiring story. Jennifer Juniper: a journey beyond the muse http://www.thejennyboyd.com https://www.instagram.com/jenny_boydlevitt/ Mick Fleetwood says of Jenny Boyd's Autobiography, “Jennifer Juniper: a journey beyond the muse” - - -“The beautifully poignant story of a partner, mother, friend, and truly inspirational woman.” Beatlesfan Magazine says: ”a must read for those interested in Beatles history.” Pick up your copy toady on Amazon or go to http://www.thejennyboyd.com

I'm sitting in an audience of 200 other public speakers waiting to hear from Broadway playwright and performer, Bo Eason. He is brilliant. When he's on stage I ignore my cell phone entirely (which says a lot coming from a millennial). He walks on stage, puts his arm around Joan Rosenberg and says “if you want to be an incredible public speaker, you need therapy. You need a therapist on your team to help you process the pressure and the ego it takes to do this for the long haul. You are here to GIVE to the audience, not take. You don't need the audience to give psychologically and emotionally to you. You need to give to THEM. Get a therapist to take care of yourself so you can truly take care of others.” Ever since that moment, nearly five years ago, I've been grateful for my weekly appointment with my therapist. It has become an anchor for my week and how I show up for the people in my life. I am so grateful for this unexpected (and strange) advice from Bo! And as a little holiday gift from me to you, I figured it was about time I introduced you to Joan. She's not my therapist, but she's the therapist to a who's who list of celebrities and someone I have deeply admired for a long time. Joan Rosenberg, PhD, is the creator of Emotional Mastery and a highly regarded expert psychologist. Her two books, Ease Your Anxiety and 90 Seconds to a Life You Love: How to Master Your Difficult Feelings to Cultivate Lasting Confidence, Resilience, and Authenticity have been pivotal resources for me in my life. Join me on The Porch as I talk with Joan about how we can all work through difficult feelings that may be circling as 2020 comes to a close.

Dave Steele is an award-winning poet, author, public speaker, singer, and advocate for the blind. Diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) in 2014, this genetic eye condition left Dave “severely sight impaired.” Together with his wife, Amy, the family grappled with the difficult diagnosis as RP quickly left Steele an unemployed father of four. Feeling the stressors of financial debt and the loss of his independence, Dave turned to social media for support with his RP journey. He was also struck by the numerous misconceptions and stories of injustice being experienced by so many blind/visually impaired people all over the world. When a member in one of these online groups learned of Dave's singing background, they invited him to perform at a meeting for those living with RP and Usher Syndrome. The experience inspired Steel's idea for his “Stand By Me RP” song. Using the classic song by Ben E. King, Dave altered the lyrics to relate to how he felt losing his own sight to Retinitis Pigmentosa. In December 2014, Dave sought permission from the band Elbow, to alter the lyrics of their song “One Day Like This.” With the band's blessing, Steele performed his version of the song at Joanne Milne's “Breaking the Silence” book launch. The Blind PoetDave created his own “Stand By Me RP” Facebook page in 2015. Since it's conception, the page has become one of the largest social media RP groups in the world. As his eyesight continued to decline, the words did not stop flowing. Dave began writing two to three poems per day about his struggles and experiences. Part creative genius, part therapy, Dave's writing became a catalyst for helping others and himself through RP.Steele's first book, Stand By Me RP Volume I, was released in February 2016. That same day, he received the call that he had been matched with a guide dog. During its first week, Stand By Me RP Volume I went on to become the #1 poetic release in both America and Australia.
