Like wolves, orcas have been loved and loathed throughout history. What created this complicated relationship between humans and whales? And have we changed our attitudes toward them and their habitat needs in time to save them? Science writer and biologist Hanne Strager joins us to share: How a conversation in a cafeteria led her to remote corners of the world. Why her sister helped her be in two places at once. How she learned about whale dialects. Why the loss of a pod member matters so much. A discussion of the book The Killer Whale Journals: Our Love and Fear of Orcas (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2023). Today's book is: The Killer Whale Journals: Our Love and Fear of Orcas, by Hanne Strager, which opens as intrepid biology student Hanne Strager volunteers to be the cook on a small research vessel in Norway's Lofoten Islands. This trip would inspire a decades-long journey to learn about the lives of killer whales—and an exploration of people's complex relationships with the biggest predators on earth. In The Killer Whale Journals, Strager brings us along with her as she battles the stormy Arctic seas of northern Norway with fellow biologists intent on decoding whale-song and dialects, interviews First Nations conservationists in Vancouver, observes Inuit hunters in Greenland, and witnesses the dismantling of black market "whale jails" in the Russian wilderness of Kamchatka. Featuring photographs from Paul Nicklen, The Killer Whale Journals reveals rare and intimate moments of connection with these fierce, brilliant predators. Our guest is: Hanne Strager, who is a biologist, whale researcher, and the future Director of Exhibitions and Visitor Experience at The Whale, a museum in Norway set to open in 2025. She cofounded a whale center in Norway and has served as the Director of Exhibitions at the Natural History Museum of Denmark. She is the author of A Modest Genius: The Story of Darwin's Life and How His Ideas Changed Everything, and The Killer Whale Journals: Our Love and Fear of Orcas. Paul Nicklen has documented the beauty and plight of our planet for more than twenty years. His work is collected by Hollywood icons, rock stars and royalty. In 2019, he became the youngest person inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame. He has said it is one thing to capture the natural world in a moment of grace and dignity, but that pales in comparison to an image that shines a brighter light on the environmental crisis and drives everyday people to action, even if only in some small way. His work has been singled out for creating a unique connection between image and viewer by featuring wild subjects in some of the most extreme conditions known on Earth.  He is a Sony Artisan of Imagery and aligns with Rolex's Perpetual Planet initiative on collaborative efforts to preserve the natural world. Nicklen has won more than thirty of the field's most prestigious awards, including the BBC's Wildlife Photographer of the Year, and the World Press Photo for Photojournalism. He has exhibited in galleries, museums and institutions around the world, including Hilton Asmus Contemporary (Chicago), Lyons Gallery (Australia), Galerie Gadcollection (Paris), Eisele Gallery (Cincinnati) and Fineart Oslo (Oslo).  Cristina Mittermeier was born in Mexico City in 1966. She graduated from the ITESM University in Mexico with a degree in Biochemical Engineering in Marine Sciences. She later attended the Fine Art Photography program at the Corcoran College for the Arts in Washington, D.C. She was named one of National Geographic's Adventurers of the Year in 2018. Her Photographs have been exhibited in galleries around the World, including Hilton Asmus (Chicago), the Saatchi Gallery (London), C. Parker Gallery (Greenwich), and Eisele Gallery (Cincinnati).  She is currently preparing for a solo exhibition at the prestigious Gallerie d'Italia in Turino, Italy. Mittermeier's many awards include the Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the Year; the Humanity Content Creator Award from HIPA; the Imaging Award for Photographers Who Give Back; the Seattle Aquarium's Sylvia Earle Medal; Travel + Leisure's Global Vision Award, and was named one of the “100 Latinos Most Committed to Climate Action.” She is a World Photographic Academy member; was the first female photographer to reach one million followers on Instagram; is a Sony Artisan of Imagery; and aligns with Rolex's Perpetual Planet initiative on collaborative efforts to preserve the natural world. EXHIBITION: “Double Exposure: Two Photographers, One Mission” at C. Parker Gallery features more than 30 large-scale photographs by Nicklen and Mittermeier (on view May 1 ‒ June 26, 2013) at the C. There were certain environmental issues that I could barely talk about in my classes. Topics like animal suffering were simply too difficult for me to cover. I remember showing a video in class almost 25 years ago now of emaciated whales who were starving due to human over-fishing.I sat in that darkened classroom with tears rolling down my face. Yes, these emotions made me want to focus on solutions, but they also made me feel ashamed of my reaction. After all, I was the professional, and the university lecturer educating my students on these topics from a scientific perspective.Years later, I became more deeply interested in inter-species connections and stories of biological reciprocity as well as our own emotional connection to nature. One such story comes to mind of the Canadian nature photographer and marine biologist, Paul Nicklen, also founder of the SeaLegacy charity. Paul was in Antarctica to photograph the Leopard Seal. These are top predators in the ecosystem, coming in at up to 3.4m in length and 600kg (1,300 lbs). Their heads are about twice the size of a grizzly bear with enormous teeth. Paul's account of interacting with a large female Leopard seal is riveting, and a prime example of biological reciprocity across species. In fact, the internet is full of examples of inter-species empathy and friendships! Is it really any wonder that we have these social connections when our very biology is linked? So as we have a deeper understanding of the connections between us and the natural world, here is what to do with those emotions of shame that you might have.First, understand that they are completely natural, there are examples of inter-species empathy all around us. Then realize, that the fact that we are not alone, but rather interconnected with all of life can make us feel hopeful. This hope then can lead us to take action and make the world better for the many varied beings of our planet. If you are interested in exploring these issues further, head on over to my website, KristinaHunterFlourishing.com.While you are there, sign up for the Flourishing Fridays newsletter. It is your weekly guide to Sustainable Wellbeing and effective environmental action. If you are a professional woman and are deeply concerned about climate change and the state of the world that we are leaving to future generations and want some guidance on the best steps to take. Of  course, there are still some people who don't think Climate Change is causing any problem to Polar Bears or any other species for that matter. Environmental Documentary Photographer, Paul Nicklen, released a video and photos of a Polar Bear on its last legs this past week and tied the dying condition to climate change.
