There were certain environmental issues that I could barely talk about in my classes. Topics like animal suffering were simply too difficult for me to cover. I remember showing a video in class almost 25 years ago now of emaciated whales who were starving due to human over-fishing.I sat in that darkened classroom with tears rolling down my face. Yes, these emotions made me want to focus on solutions, but they also made me feel ashamed of my reaction. After all, I was the professional, and the university lecturer educating my students on these topics from a scientific perspective.Years later, I became more deeply interested in inter-species connections and stories of biological reciprocity as well as our own emotional connection to nature. One such story comes to mind of the Canadian nature photographer and marine biologist, Paul Nicklen, also founder of the SeaLegacy charity. Paul was in Antarctica to photograph the Leopard Seal. These are top predators in the ecosystem, coming in at up to 3.4m in length and 600kg (1,300 lbs). Their heads are about twice the size of a grizzly bear with enormous teeth. Paul's account of interacting with a large female Leopard seal is riveting, and a prime example of biological reciprocity across species. In fact, the internet is full of examples of inter-species empathy and friendships! Is it really any wonder that we have these social connections when our very biology is linked? So as we have a deeper understanding of the connections between us and the natural world, here is what to do with those emotions of shame that you might have.First, understand that they are completely natural, there are examples of inter-species empathy all around us. Then realize, that the fact that we are not alone, but rather interconnected with all of life can make us feel hopeful. This hope then can lead us to take action and make the world better for the many varied beings of our planet. If you are interested in exploring these issues further, head on over to my website, KristinaHunterFlourishing.com.While you are there, sign up for the Flourishing Fridays newsletter. It is your weekly guide to Sustainable Wellbeing and effective environmental action. If you are a professional woman and are deeply concerned about climate change and the state of the world that we are leaving to future generations and want some guidance on the best steps to take. In today's episode, I speak with National Geographic Photographer and marine scientist, Cristina Mittermeier.  Cristina started her career as a marine biologist but quickly discovered a passion for photography, which in many ways shaped the rest of her life.  She has traveled the world documenting the state of our world's oceans and was awarded Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the year, recognized as one of the World's Top 40 Outdoor photographers by Outdoor magazine, and was named one of the National Geographic Adventurers of the Year in 2018.Along with her life partner, fellow National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen,  Cristina founded the environmental organization Sea Legacy, dedicated to protecting the world's ocean through storytelling. With Cristina's full calendar it took time to organize the interview, and we scheduled our recording for late-march 2020, unknowing that a worldwide pandemic was about to hit. And even with the world seemingly crashing down around us she spoke honestly about the meaning of being a photographer, why telling marine stories was so important to her, and a day in the Galapagos that encapsulated the entirety of why she gets in the ocean. An interview with Nicola Hodgins, Policy Manager at WDC (Whale and Dolphin Conservation). about the Grind - the killing of Pilot Whales and dolphins in the Faroe Islands. Our conversation was triggered of course by the unprecedented mass killing of more than 1400 Atlantic White-sided Dolphins by Faroese hunters on September 12th, and the disturbing and heartbreaking images that have gone around the world. The Faroese themselves seemed shocked by the scale of the killing, and reaction here in the UK has been profound - disgust, outrage, and a determination to do something - anything - to stop these hunts in their tracks. Petitions have been launched, boycotts of Faeroe-caught fish suggested - yet just a few days later another Grind took place and another 53 Pilot Whales killed. Nicola has been working on the Grind for many years and as she says in this interview, much as we might want a quick fix, there really isn't one simple answer, and that it will be a combination of approaches - including dialogue with the Faroese themselves - that will finally stop these hunts for good.Whale and Dolphin Conservation Website  Whale and Dolphin Conservation  Twitter feed and Facebook pagePetition  (WDC and SeaLegacy)  Ask the Faroese Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen to take a firm regulatory stance against the slaughter of dolphins in the Faroe IslandsPetition (Gov.uk website)  Suspend trade agreement with Faroe Islands until all whale & dolphin hunts end The Guardian (Sept 14th) Outcry over killing of almost 1,500 dolphins on Faroe Islands

Everyday Rockstar (0:00:00)Lisa and Richie feature this week's Everyday Rockstar. We want to feature you! You can nominate yourself or someone you love by emailing thelisashow@byu.edu with “Everyday Rockstar” in the subject line.  How our Diets Affect the Environment (0:04:31)We Americans can sometimes be wasteful with our food. According to the USDA, it's been estimated that we waste about 40% of our national food supply every year, which equals out to about 133 billion pounds of food. You may be thinking, so what if some of my food goes to waste? I eat most of it! But it can have some serious environmental impacts. Joining us today is Kathryn Kellogg, founder of lifestyle website Going Zero Waste, to discuss how we can be more eco-friendly in our food consumption.  Turning the Tide on Ocean Loss (0:14:10)One place has recently become home to over five trillion pieces of plastic, but it's not a recycling plant, or even a landfill. It's the ocean. Our oceans hold some of our most valuable resources, and yet, each year they get a little closer to destruction due to pollution, overfishing, and the extinction of marine life. It's hard to feel like you're able to make a difference when you're just one person and the ocean is thousands of miles wide and thousands of feet deep. So we invited Cristina Mittermeier, a conservation photographer, often featured on National Geographic, and one of the founders of SeaLegacy. She joins us to share her insights into how we can help save our oceans.  Fighting for Forests (0:26:19)The rate of deforestation is shocking—we're losing approximately 27 soccer fields of forest per minute, which adds up to 18.7 MILLION acres of forested land lost each year. I feel like the importance of our planet's forests is something we all kinda get, but it's a hard concept for me to fully wrap my brain around. This is an important discussion for us to have, because if we don't truly understand a problem that's this big, why would we feel motivated to help? To help, we've invited Kerry Cesareo onto the show to answer our questions today. Kerry is the Senior Vice President of the World Wildlife Fund's Forest department .  The Science of Climate Change (0:34:57)Whenever you hear someone talk about “Climate Change” you might wonder if it's actually as dire as they say. You've heard people argue both sides on YouTube and the news. You've heard multiple opinions about how severe the problem is. And you've always heard people reference “scientific experts”, but who are these so-called climate experts and what do they really have to say about all of this? Well, allow us to introduce you to one. Dr. Michael Mann is a distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State and the author of several books on climate change. His work has been a vital part in proving the severity of the earth's rising temperature to people and politicians since 2001.  Enjoying the Environment (0:44:33)We all care about climate change in different degrees. Maybe you're doing everything you can to help preserve our planet but are struggling to get your friends on board. Or maybe you love the earth but have never felt motivated to get off the sideline and actually make changes. So, if the science and facts we read about aren't enough to change anyone's behavior towards the environment, what will? Maybe the key is to spend more time in the nature we are trying to save. Joining us today is Michael Brune, the executive director for the Sierra Club . The Sierra Club is the most influential grassroots, environmental organization in the United States, and they motivate people to get outside and enjoy the benefits of nature.  Helping Animal Shelters (0:50:38)While our pets are enjoying the extra attention from everyone being home so often right now, there are many pets that don't have a home that are requiring some extra attention. Many animal shelters have had to close their doors right now, but that doesn't mean that the animals they're housing have stopped needing help. So, what can we do to help out our furry friends? Here to share some of her tips with us, is Holly Sizemore, Chief Mission Officer of the Best Friends Animal Society.  Finances in Marriage (1:09:26)One of the top stressors that contributes to divorce today is finances. Dealing with debt and other financial difficulties puts a strain on marriages and leads to a lot of blaming rather than problem-solving. With this looming fact in the air, we wanted go get some expert advice on what couples can do better when handling money so they can eliminate stress and keep their marriages together. Our next guest, Rachel Cruze, is a #1 New York Times best-selling author and host of The Rachel Cruze Show where she helps people learn the proper ways to handle money and stay out of debt. She joins us today to talk about how we can improve our finances for the sake of our marriages.  Home Before Dark (1:28:37)As we continue to be encouraged to social distance, it feels like we are in constant need of new shows to binge. Finding appropriate and uplifting programs that the whole family can sit down and enjoy together can be challenging. Luckily, Apple TV+ just released a family-friendly mystery thriller called “ Home Before Dark ” that we can stream now. Here to tell us all about this new show is Brooklyn Prince and Jim Sturgess. You can see 9-year-oldBrooklyn as Hilde and Jim as her father in the series.

Katie Lin is a multimedia journalist, campaigner and storyteller, who’s contributed to social justice and environmental contribution projects around the globe for organizations that include Greenpeace and SeaLegacy. In the last decade, she’s worked across digital and traditional media channels, producing stories that engage audiences and drive change at local, national, and international levels.Though Katie has led incredibly high-level campaigns to tackle issues like petroleum development, mining and endangered species, she tells us that some of her favourite stories have a much smaller footprint, and come from the heart. This leads into a discussion about the importance of using our voice to tell the truth, through telling everyday stories. As those privileged to have the access, training, equipment and platform to be heard, it’s critical for journalists to use story to give people a voice, help them be seen and remind them that they belong – they matter. While Katie shares stories of her work in Tibet, the Amazon and SeaLegacy, we explore the concept of citizen journalism as the next big movement – the most powerful way to make change. Through her work, Katie shows us that only by enabling people everywhere to use their inner storyteller to make the world into a place they love, can we create a future that works for all.

To most watch enthusiasts, the name, Andy Mann, might be familiar from his association with Zodiac watches, in particular, the recent Super Sea Wolf 68 Saturation collaboration that he helped design. But his work goes well beyond sketching out dive watch dial designs. He's a National Geographic photographer, a senior fellow at SeaLegacy, and an award-winning filmmaker. He's also an avid rock climber who makes his home in decidedly landlocked Boulder, Colorado. In this episode, Jason talks to Andy about how he got started in his enviable career, his travel and packing hacks, and what is on top of his adventure bucket list (it's a good one). This interview was recorded remotely and includes some strange audio qualities as a result of the equipment available onsite.
