When 19-year-old Shana Grice reported her stalker to the police, they didn't just dismiss her—they fined her. Months later, she was found murdered in her bedroom, her throat slashed, and her home set on fire. The man responsible had a documented history of harassment, and Shana had done everything she could to be heard. In this episode, I tell the devastating story of Shana Grice—a young woman who was failed at every turn by the very system meant to protect her. I'll go over the red flags that were ignored, the chilling behavior of her killer, and how one police department's negligence became a national scandal. This is more than a true crime story. When 42 bodies buried near Liverpool Street Station in London were dug up as part of the works on Crossrail on 12th August, 2015, they were thought to be victims of the Great Plague of 1665. The incident shone a light on the cemetery in which they were buried - a pauper's grave at Bethlem Hospital; the institution more commonly known as ‘Bedlam'. From its establishment in 1247, Bedlam ‘lunatic asylum' quickly gained a reputation as a place that was pioneering - it was the only mental health facility in Britain - and fearsome, a place of stigma and spectacle. The public could pay to tour the facility and have pisspots thrown at them. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal how the abuses perpetrated at Bedlam still have echoes in modern-day surgery; look back at the first formal inspection of the premises; and consider why ‘Bedlam' has become so resonant in literature from Shakespeare to Dickens… CONTENT WARNING: description of unsanitary conditions and patient abuse; reference to out-dated and pejorative language about mental health Further Reading: • ‘London Crossrail Dig At Bedlam Reveals 'Great Plague Victims' Were Buried In Thin Wooden Coffins' (HuffPost UK, 2015): https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2015/08/12/london-crossrail-excavators-skeletons-great-plague_n_7976488.html • ‘How Bethlem Royal Hospital Became The Notorious Bedlam Asylum' (All Thats Interesting, 2021): https://allthatsinteresting.com/bedlam • ‘Skeletons from Bedlam Hospital site uncovered by Crossrail' (Daily Mail, 2015): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obXO60iOyLM For bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/Retrospectors We'll be back on Monday! In this week's ‘News Roundtable' episode, host Chris Wright joins Kevin Schofield, political editor of HuffPost UK, and Arieh Kovler, writer, political analyst and communications consultant. The episode begins by discussing the Russian army's recent atrocities committed in Bucha, Ukraine, and the extreme reporting within the Russian media. They delve into the impact that fake news and disinformation could have on the citizens of Russia and the long-lasting effects of seeing the war through Putin's eyes. Could Putin be prosecuted for war crimes in Ukraine? The conversation then moves to the privatisation of Channel 4, which has sparked a backlash from across the political spectrum. Is this an attempt to get political revenge over Channel 4's coverage of Brexit? The conversation then moves on to chew over the ‘sex and drugs scandal' tied to David Warburton, MP for Somerton, which parliamentary officials are investigating. The guests debate whether these scandals have a knock-on effect on the government in general or if they will get swept under the carpet.Together they also discuss Rishi Sunak's £100,000 donation to his old private school, Winchester College, and consider whether his wealth and background could raise issues for him, in his bid to become the next prime minister.Created & produced by Podcast Partners: www.podcastpartners.comSign up to receive updates by email when a new episode drops at: www.wrightonthenail.fm
Join us in this chat as Samuel talks to Markus Fjørtoft (@markusfjortoft) about the inner-media workings at Manchester United. We start off by asking what we ask all journalists: finding the balance between forming relationships with a club and players while reporting the truth and the necessary criticism. Further, we discuss his relationships with the different managers, ranging from Van Gaal to Mourinho and Solskjær, as well as Sir Alex Ferguson's current influence and the weight of expectations tied to the Ferguson DNA, and most critically, the problematic advice players are currently receiving from so-called media experts and the reasons for this tone-deaf approach. When you're not well, there are some things you don't want to hear…Have you tried yoga? Are you drinking enough water?Have to tried this supplement, or that wacky Goop craze?Well, today's guest, Lucy Pasha Robinson, the opinions editor at HuffPost UK, has had enough. Which is why she's the host of their new podcast series called Chronic. Chronic is an unashamedly anti-wellness podcast. And this is why I wanted Lucy to come on the show. There is a story that we tell about health. About being well, and being unwell. Of fixing things. Of battling things. Of fighting things. When the reality of the worlds of health and illness do not have a clear delineation. No one knows this better than people who live with chronic conditions. The kind of people Lucy talks to on the podcast. Chronic is challenging the narrative of a constant pursuit of wellness at all costs, and rather focuses on the intricacies, lessons and humour of living with a chronic illness. Welcome to Storyteller, a podcast about how, and why, we tell stories. We have quite a few new listeners join us since last week, so I wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I'm your host, Lisa Golden, I'm a journalist and documentary filmmaker, obsessed with the intricacies of storytelling. So this podcast is a chance to hear from people from all fields and from all over the world. I've had poets, and journalists and performers on, but I've also had academics, scientists and even a Buddhist nun on. We're all storytellers, and this podcast is here to feed your curiosity, to spark ideas in your brain, get you thinking about the stories that are being told around you and maybe even the stories you want to tell yourself. I loved this conversation with Lucy because what I found so interesting about listening to people share their experiences on Chronic, is how much discomfort people who don't understand chronic illness, bring to those who have these conditions. So, what I mean is, these narratives and stories about striving for health, health as something that is achievable if you just put a bit of elbow grease into it and take your vitamins - these narratives and beliefs add an extra layer of pain for people already dealing with their own physical experiences. We also discuss the structure of the health system, why we're so uncomfortable with illness and Lucy shares her own experiences which led to her making Chronic in the first place.SHOW NOTES:Listen to Chronic hereFollow Lucy on Twitter hereSend Lisa your thoughts about the show onTwitter @lisajozi or @storytellerpod1Instagram @lisagoldenjozi or @storyteller_podOr drop her an email at storytellerpod@gmail.com for a shout on in the following week's episode! Anand Menon joins the HuffPost UK politics team as the Conservative candidates are whittled down to replace Theresa May. From 10 to three, who's coming out on top? Rory Stewart definitely won't be, losing his tie in the debate and then ultimately losing the tie to be leader. Yeah, we know that's laboured. But speaking of Labour, is Jeremy Corbyn about to back a second referendum?

The last three years suggest not but Westminster isn't in the mood to do normalcy now. #Brexit #Theresa May #Jeremy Corbyn #Labour #Tories #ukpolitics #politics

The HuffPost UK politics team welcomes a new member to take a look at the week in Westminster. Brexit havoc doesn't show any signs of making the UK political scene any less barmy, with a new PM, a new cabinet with some surprising inclusions and a Labour party tearing itself together. And have UKIP found some sensible leadership? #Theresa May #Boris Johnson #Brexit #Conservatives #Labour #UKIP #Cabinet #UK politics
The HuffPost UK politics team take a look at the week in Westminster. This week, the Chilcot report was finally published after a seven year search for the truth around why the UK went to war in Iraq. The report mainly confirmed suspicions but what it more importantly did was bring together all the strands of a long drawn-out affair that has eroded the UK's faith in politics. Is Brexit the result? You know how that went. #KenLivingstone #Labour #JeremyCorbyn #Dubs #syria #davidcameron
The HuffPost UK politics team take a look at the week within Westminster. This week could be the start of the "Oust Jeremy" campaign within his own party. Do they have the momentum though? On the other side of the House, David Cameron accepted defeat over Sunday trading laws. No one it seems, wants to toe the line.
The HuffPost UK politics team take a look at the week in Westminster. Jeremy Corbyn snubbed his Labour's PLP this week to take a seat in a TV studio, causing a lot of problems for his loyal fans in the shadow cabinet. Prostitution gained a voice in a select committee hearing, as current laws were reviewed to see if they can solve problems with the world's oldest profession and all the while the government tried to pass on the news that we'll have to work "until we're dead". If that doesn't cheer you up, the quiz of the week will.
The HuffPost UK politics team look at the week in Westminster that wasn't dominated by EU talk. This week, boundary changes threaten the existence of parliamentary seats, which would suit one party, while an e-petition is used for good for once. Meanwhile, our US cousins push the limits of legitimate candidates.

Meanwhile, back in the House, male politicians were carrying on as usual against the rise of the WASPs.
The HuffPost UK politics team take a look at the week in Westminster, which had one foot in the future and one foot in the past. Trident has given Jeremy Corbyn trouble and the Conservatives a chance to attack while a range of reports looking into the 2015 election explained the obvious. That's was before the MPs started talking drugs.
The HuffPost UK politics team take on another week in Westminster, this time without Owen Bennett but instead joined by Lucy Sherriff. This week, rebellion is in the air as some Conservative MPs head for Brexit, Labour risk a Corbyn missile crisis and Junior Doctors put down the stethoscopes for the first strike in over 40 years.
