What if you could rewrite the code of your personality—on command? Not just cope with anxiety, overthinking, or social exhaustion… but delete the traits holding you back and install better ones? This episode challenges everything you've been told about identity. Dave dives deep into the science of personality change to reveal why your habits, moods, triggers, and even sense of self aren't fixed—they're fluid. And more importantly: they're up for grabs. Joining him is award-winning journalist from The Atlantic, Olga Khazan, author of Me, But Better, who spent years hacking her own mind—transforming high neuroticism, social avoidance, and chronic self-criticism into calm, confidence, and connection. Her personal experiment in identity rewiring became a roadmap for anyone who wants to feel different… and live differently. You'll uncover the hidden mechanisms behind neuroticism, reactivity, and emotional spirals—and how to override them with real-time upgrades. What You'll Learn in This Episode: • Why your personality is a program—and how to recode it • What daily behaviors scientifically rewire anxiety, anger, and reactivity • The surprising link between identity, inflammation, and your gut • Why gratitude isn't soft—it's neurological jiu-jitsu • How to know if it's your biology or your story running the show • Whether pills, psychedelics, or sleep do more to shift who you are • What to do when your inner critic won't shut up • And how to stop being the person you never meant to become SPONSORS -LMNT | Free LMNT Sample Pack with any drink mix purchase by going to https://drinklmnt.com/DAVE. -Leela Quantum Tech | Head to https://leelaq.com/DAVE for 10% off. In this episode I share insights into the concept of inner committees—the diverse parts of ourselves, such as “confident” you, “chaotic” you, or “competitive” you, that shape your thoughts, feelings, and actions. I draw upon my personal experiences, and explain how these parts work together with the intention of keeping us safe, even if their methods can sometimes be counterproductive. I will introduce you to Internal Family Systems (IFS), a therapeutic approach designed to help people understand, embrace, and heal their internal parts. By identifying the roles of exiles (pain-carrying parts), managers (protective parts), and firefighters (distraction-focused parts), IFS guides individuals toward connecting with their authentic, compassionate self. Through this connection, you can learn to harmonise your inner committee and live with greater self-acceptance and inner peace. In this episode you will learn: What your ‘Inner Committee' is and its distinct voices and roles How your inner committee aims to protect and support you Introduction to Internal Family Systems (IFS) Ways you can heal through self-compassion and self-acceptance Why self-discovery and healing require ongoing attention and care How to progress through curiosity instead of judgement - What is your inner committee like? You can find links to purchase these items here:   https://www.clarityspeechandlanguage.com/SPEECH%20TOOLS   MY 6 FAVORITE SPEECH TOOLS   MR. MOUTH – or whatever it's called.  This is great for showing kids where to put their tongue.  It's actually a puppet, although I haven't been able to puppetize it successfully, if that's even a word.  But the kids like it and it makes it easier to see where their tongue should go.  There are a lot of sounds where this is important, especially /r/, since the tongue goes back in the mouth for that one.   TONGUE DEPRESSORS – These come in boxes of cherry or grape flavors, and so the kids don't mind as much having a stick put in their mouth.  These are great for showing where to place the tongue, or for holding the tongue back where it needs to be.     TONGUE LIFTER – This is like a fancy tongue depressor that is shaped to go around the tongue and make it easier to push the tongue back to make sounds like /r/. They are not flavored, but they are smooth and come in fun colors.   BOOKS – Colorful picture books are great for getting kids to practice their speech sounds. I like the ones with lots of pictures and just enough words to give a variety of speech sound opportunities. The Lazy Ladybug -- this is one of my favorites because it has all the sounds in it (I think?).  It's a cute, easy story to read and have them retell, with a fun ending.   HAND MIRROR – A must for speech therapy! This enables the child to see where they are putting their tongue, how they are shaping their mouth, if they are holding their jaw still, etc.   MY VIDEO COURSES – Well, of course I'm going to include my video courses, because they have lots of practice videos and pdf docs that you can use to have your child practice every sound in every position. Check them out!   You can find links to all these items HERE.   Thanks and have a great day!

We are thrilled to have Psychotherapist Kirsten Rewey back on our show today.  Kirsten is passionate about working with adults who struggle with relationship concerns, anxiety or depression, and she also enjoys assisting teens and families in crisis. In today's episode, she's joined by her 19 year old daughter Sophie, to talk about the very important topic of mental health for teens and young adults that many of our listeners have been asking for during this pandemic.  Kirsten Rewey is a Psychotherapist who works with a diverse clientele.  She has provided mental health services within family programs through Hennepin County, as well as in K-12 educational settings.  She is experienced in play and art therapy for children and uses a range of narrative, cognitive behavioral and mindfulness approaches. She offers a collaborative, welcoming therapeutic environment in which clients feel safe to tell their story. Kirsten graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Social Work, and has more than 15 years of professional experience. A mother of three, she understands the multitude of challenges facing working moms and is passionate about helping her clients get to the next level. Sophie is a Sophomore at UW-Madison majoring in Biology, with minors in studio art and french.  She researches in the neurology department as a lab assistant and will work as an EMT this summer. On campus, she is involved with greek life and the Wisconsin Alumni Student Board. We first had Kirsten on our show right after the pandemic hit as a bonus episode in late March of 2020 where we talked about mental health and specifically anxiety, which is on the rise across the globe given our current world health crisis.  Kirsten shared her insight, her "101 Therapy Tools" and helpful advice that all of us can use to bring more calm into our life; not just in today's current environment but for a lifetime.  So if you haven't already listened to our first conversation with Kirsten that aired in late March as a bonus episode, we  highly encourage you to do so  In today's conversation with this mother daughter duo, we go into the mind of a college student, the anxiety, struggles and challenges she faces, and her insight and tips that work for her and her peers, especially during this pandemic when we are all more isolated from people. Sophie shares what she and her friends do to help each other out and boost each others' moods.  Kirsten shares some of the challenges that she's seeing in her practice with her teenage/young adult clients and her simple (but not always easy) tips that can boost your mood and improve your mental clarity, like walking with a friend and getting outside every day. Sophie and Kirsten both talk about their relationship and how their open communication has been paramount for them to develop and maintain a strong bond throughout her teenage years. Some of Kirsten's parenting tips include: spending quality time with our kids, admitting when you need to do a “do over” and leaving your ego at the door, as well as becoming vulnerable and sharing your generational story as parents. This is one conversation that is a must for all parents and teens, which touches on finding balance with our mind, body and spirit.   Regardless of the age of your kids right now, the wisdom and insight that is shared in this episode is extremely useful for parents of younger kids as well as teens and young adults.
