On this episode, Derek sits with Joe Dittmar.  As the day of this release marks the 23rd Anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 Attacks,  I have been sitting on Joe's interview for 9 months as quite frankly, his story is so incredible, it felt only appropriate to release it on 9/11.  Joe agreed to come on the show as part of the “Derek Duvall Show 9/11 Outreach Project” as he was on the 102nd Floor of the South Tower when the North Tower was struck and is one of the few living people to have seen the carnage of the North Tower up close including the wrecked fuselage of Flight 11.  I also consider him to be the luckiest survivor of all of the 9/11 Survivors I have interviewed as as you will hear, he was 3 floors below United 175 striking the South Tower, having made a crucial choice that ended up saving his life.  Joe's story is gripping and heart wrenching and not for the faint of heart so listener discretion is advised.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joe-dittmar-02214812/SPONSOR - Go to https://betterhelp.com/derekduvallshow for 10% off your first month of therapy with @betterhelp and get matched with a therapist who will listen and help #sponsored

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Giving Guide for Student Organisations – An ineffective outreach project, published by Karla Still on April 14, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Executive summary EA Helsinki created a giving guide booklet for student organisations in Finnish. The main aim of the Giving Guide for Student Organisations was to raise awareness of EA among students by providing them with information on how to give effectively. A sub-goal was to redirect donations from student organisations, although we do not expect the expected value of redirected donations to be worth the effort of producing and marketing the guide. We distributed printed versions of the guide to 121 organisations at 5 universities, most by approaching them at student fairs we attended in the fall of 2022. A digital version of the guide was also sent to the organisations via email a few days after the printed booklet was distributed. The direct results or impact from the giving guide have been almost non-existent. I believe most of the impact comes later from having exposed people to the idea of effective giving, making them more receptive to EA later on. My original reason for writing this post was to offer other EA groups an opportunity to replicate the project, but now I am not so sure that it is worth it. Instead, I would love to get feedback on the impact assessment, the project, and hear if others have tried something similar. I hope the spelled-out project implementation and analysis can help other community builders who might think about starting similar projects. I also wrote this as a report for future community builders in Finland. Tip: Skip to the measuring the impact-section if you aren't interested in the details about the content and implementation of the project. Content of the giving guide Below is the structure of the guide. (In parentheses the length of the text in A5 pages.) You can also find an auto translation on the content excluding the donation recommendations or download the Finnish guide on our website: Title: A giving guide for student organisations. The guide includes simple legal advice on donating, inspiration from other student organisations on how to incorporate donations into the organisation's activities, and recommended charities with links. Trustworthy. We explain why effective giving matters, how we have chosen the recommended cause areas and charities, provide references for further reading, and include a one-page about EA Helsinki. Easy to read. Project background The student organisation landscape and donating In Finland, it is common for students to be members of multiple student organisations and associations. E...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Running an EA outreach project involving high school students? Let us know!, published by Julia Wise on December 28, 2021 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR: Please let CEA's community health team know if you are running, or planning to run, an education program involving high school students in the spaces of EA, longtermism, or rationality. We think outreach to school students might be very promising, and there seems to be an increased interest in it recently. However, working with high school students has risks that don't occur (or occur less) with university students and adults. We think it's worth tracking and mitigating these risks, but that it is not normally worth significantly changing, delaying, or scaling down projects because of these risks. CEA's community health team works to (among other things) increase the chances that people have positive experiences in the community, and that we successfully communicate EA-related ideas. So we're hoping to learn about all of the school outreach and education projects that are running or planned. We'll try to advise on things like good practices around child protection reducing reputational risks among teachers and parents helping with any problems that occur. There are other organizers doing outreach to this age group who coordinate and share ideas and advice. We'll put you in touch with them if you're not already connected. So please let us know if you are running, or planning to run, an EA education program targeting high school students. You can fill in this very brief (~1 minute) form, or email Catherine Low on catherine@centreforeffectivealtruism.org. Thank you! If you know of other people who are running EA outreach projects, you can email Catherine, fill out the form, or comment below. Thanks for listening. The Dysphagia Outreach Project is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide meaningful assistance to individuals affected by dysphagia. Today on the show we invite Allie Mataras, Amanda Weissberg, Allison Boyer, Jessica Lasky, Hillary Cooper, and Michelle Coffaro from the Dysphagia Outreach Project’s Board of Directors to talk about how they have come together to work on this project as volunteers and the great things they are doing for the community. The original idea came from Hillary and she kicks things off by talking about how she was disturbed by a general lack of access to supplies experienced by patients and how she wanted to take the initiative to fix this. Hillary teamed up with Michelle and Jessica and our next two guests weigh in on the contributions they made to get the idea off the ground. Jessica speaks about the role she plays in the organization in the fields of education and advocacy and the Michelle shares her responsibilities as VP of operations. Michelle runs the food bank in Cincinnati and we hear about the incredible wealth of supplies they distribute. From there, we hear from Allie and her work as Director of Fundraising before getting to know Amanda and the contributions she has made on the social media front as Captain of Instagram for the public relations team. Wrapping up, we meet our final guest, Allison Boyer, who manages the DOP Facebook page where she helps assemble literature reviews of the most current research in the field to be distributed freely to all who are interested. So for all this and more about an amazing project that stands testimony to the power of purpose-driven teamwork, tune in today!

The Discover Coral Reefs School Program, teaches K- 12th grade students from Key West to Miami the importance of ocean and coastal ecosystems through activities in the classroom and on the water. The program supplements the current science curriculum of these schools by focusing on marine science lessons that are of particular importance to students and families residing in Florida. Coral Camp The Coral Camp Summer Program uses interactive activities and field trips to teach children 6- 14 years of age about ocean ecology, coral reefs, marine life and sustainability. Camp activities include lessons on the identification of common corals, fish, and invertebrates, oceanography, tides, symbiosis, snorkel etiquette and leave no trace principles. Each year Reef Relief offers scholarships sponsored by local businesses and community members so that children regardless of income have a chance to participate in this unique program. Over the summer, 260 local and vacationing youth will take part in the program. Community & Environmental Stewardship In partnership with community groups and government agencies, Reef Relief coordinates volunteer programs that cultivate an attitude of stewardship within the community. Since 2010, Reef Relief’s coastal clean-up program has removed over 150,000 lbs of marine debris from the shores and waters of the Florida Keys. Reef Relief has partnered with the City of Key West to educate residents and visitors about stormwater and local water quality through the Stormwater Education and Outreach Project. The Key West High School Reef Relief Club and alternative spring break volunteers each year have stenciled storm drains throughout the City of Key West with no dumping messages. Other Stormwater Education Programs we run include our “Skip the Straw” Campaign, “Protect your Skin, Protect our Reef” sunscreen campaign, and our storm drain stenciling project. Reef Education The distribution of nearly 100,000 brochures to Florida Keys locations including resorts, hotels and guesthouses, Chambers of Commerce, educational facilities, visitor centers and more are an important way to educate the public about our fragile ecosystem. Information found in the “Don’t Teach Your Trash to Swim” poster, “Coral Reef Guide for Kids of All Ages” brochure, “Coral Reefs” brochure and the “Florida Keys is a No Discharge Zone for Boater Sewage” brochure are all important resources to inform the general public. Join in our efforts to improve and protect our coral reef ecosystem. Policy Guidance For 32 years, Reef Relief has made, considerable progress to improve water quality and protect, fish and wildlife of Florida’s coral reef ecosystems by working with environmental, scientific and governmental leaders in Florida. Reef Relief’s State Program Director Dr. Jeff Sharkey and his staff at the Capitol Alliance Group are a driving force for improved water quality. In support of this effort, Reef Relief become a member of the Everglades Coalition in 2012. The Everglades Coalition is an alliance of 57 local, state and national environmental organizations. It is dedicated to the full restoration of the greater Everglades ecosystem encompassing the lakes that connect to Lake Okeechobee, the River of Grass, Florida Bay and the Florida Keys. Reef Relief will continue to monitor Federal and State activities on water quality, ocean policy, fisheries, and marine species. Key West Marine Park In 2012, Reef Relief took over management of the Key West Marine Park through a partnership with the City of Key West. This swim park will become a focal point for Reef Relief’s marine education and scientific programs. These will include the design and implementation of a snorkel trail by Reef Relief staff, partners, and volunteers within the Key West Marine Park. This will be the first interpretive snorkel trail in North America. The park provides an interactive outdoor learning site for students of all ages. Most of us are in the habit of making snap judgments about others with very little information. It's a shortcut our brains frequently use to conserve energy. But what we often miss when we do so is the acknowledgement and recognition of the humanity of the person standing before us. Autism Spectrum Disorder is, on one level, an opportunity to look deeper; to admit that our understanding is severely limited by our own perceptions and biases; and an appeal to be our most compassionate selves with those who may be different from us. Aside from being a wealth of information on ASD, Taleen is unflinchingly honest and vulnerable in sharing her experiences as a parent of a child with Autism. The Forever Fused podcast is an outreach of www.foreverfused.com. If you would like to support the FF community, you can visit our patreon page for donations at www.patreon.com/foreverfused. Guest interviewer, Jen Krakowsky, interviews Martha Carter of the Twisted Outreach Project.  At the age of 11, Martha, an enthusiastic young dancer, was diagnosed with a “C” curve scoliosis and, at age 14, underwent Harrington Rod surgery. After spending a year in bed encased in a body cast, she was told she could never dance again. Undeterred, Martha’s journey back to dance evolved into a lifelong practice of health, mobility, emotional and artistic expression.A teacher, choreographer and certified yoga instructor, Martha has spent years exploring and training in many body work techniques. Her efforts to feel better in her body resulted in having her Harrington rods removed after 21 years. This led her to develop a rehabilitation technique that alleviates discomfort and rebuilds strength through the combination of Yoga, physiotherapy, massage, dance, Pilates, breathing and meditation.    In 2017 Martha received her certification as a teacher in Yoga for Scoliosis through Elise Browning Miller. She now teaches at the TOPS studio in Vancouver, as well as holding regular workshops around BC, across North America and in Mexico.    Since 2016, she has been developing a workshop specifically for people with fused spines, and will hold her first 'Fusion Retreat' in September 2018 on Vancouver Island. Martha is also available for private consultations in person or online with adults, teenagers and their parents. In 2009 she founded the TWiSTED Outreach Project for Backcare and Scoliosis (TOPS) to offer others the community and resources she didn’t have when she was young. Based in Vancouver, BC Canada, TOPS hosts classes, workshops and retreats locally, nationally and internationally. Check out the website to learn more about all of TOPS activities and to read Martha’s blog!   Martha's website is www.twistedoutreachproject.com
