Dr. J Show - From Abuse Victim, to Lesbian, to Redemption: Nancy Charles Shares her Story

Nancy carried a grudge against her parents for years. They didn't help her or take her to therapy. They didn't accept her as a part of the family. To boot, they got divorced. And as far back as when she was 6 she felt like she didn't fit in, almost anywhere. To top it all off, she could recall having her first same sex attraction to her teacher in the 3rd grade. For years she identified as a lesbian and lived that lifestyle, until she came to a realization about all of these issues with her own life and with her parents: it started when she was sexually abused as a very young child. The trauma in her life had led her down the path she was on. Along her healing journey, she discovered that much of the anger she felt at her parents was misplaced and that they had worked to help her heal. Nancy Charles explains the first half of her story with Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse on episode 243 of the Dr. J show.   Nancy Charles is an ex member of the LGBTQ community who had a miraculous conversion to Christ through finding and praying the rosary at one of the darkest moments in her life. She now leads a life of chastity and shares her story to help reach others who struggle with same sex attraction and believing in God.   Tune in next Wednesday for part 2 of this can't miss interview, or join our Locals community to watch the full episode now: https://theruthinstitute.locals.com/newsfeed   0:00 - Introduction 3:54 - The Beginning - Sexual Introduction 8:46 - Abusers wrap actions in love, confusing 15:00 - Reflection - Believing it was my fault 25:03 - Unexplaned Feeling and Keeping Secrets 34:56 - Needing & Searching for an Explanation 41:57 - Impact of the Divorce 54:30 - Drugs, Anger, Anxiety, Opening up and Coming out 1:00:00 - Turning point & creating an Armour against the Abuse   Interview links:   Avoiding Babylon: https://www.youtube.com/live/LNhWOlOjXCw?si=rHylFZi1mhKIFy35   Integrated with Angela Erickson: https://www.youtube.com/live/NWwVf_Ywik0?si=C-viyrD0HELthjOc   Matters of Soul Importance https://open.spotify.com/episode/1sMMpuWZPlFCgSDKRYljIv?si=rSH5RKHxQhOUo1BR1dkU3g   Become Who You Are by the John Paul ll Renewal Center: https://becomewhoyouare.buzzsprout.com/791723/14515698   Follow me on “X” (formerly known as Twitter): @cancelwok3   Subscribe to our YouTube playlist:  @RuthInstitute  Follow us on Social Media: https://www.instagram.com/theruthinstitute https://twitter.com/RuthInstitute https://www.facebook.com/TheRuthInstitute/ https://theruthinstitute.locals.com/newsfeed       Have a question or a comment? In a recent episode of "Hidden Killers," hosts Tony Brueski and Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, meticulously unpacked the multi-layered case of Ashley Benefield, a former ballerina accused of fatally shooting her husband. Benefield claims she acted in self-defense and is staking her claim on the stand-your-ground defense law, which permits using force when one perceives an imminent threat.   Brueski began the discussion, acknowledging that a preliminary assessment of the case might be misleading, emphasizing the importance of delving into the nuances of the situation. He added, "I then dived into some of the interviews, some of the accounts of both Ashley Benefield and her victim and their friends and their family, and it painted an almost very different picture for me and outlook."   Guest Neama Rahmani voiced his apprehensions about the case. "It's gonna be a tough case for Benefield," he said. Highlighting that Benefield did not invoke the stand-your-ground defense immediately following the shooting, Rahmani indicated that the forensics and ballistics reported don't support her claim of self-defense.   Despite Benefield's history of alleged domestic violence, her credibility has been questioned. As Rahmani puts it, "The judge didn't find her credible. We've already seen one trier of fact, at least, say that she's not credible." Yet, he noted that women, especially those perceived as attractive, often fare well in murder trials.   Appraising Benefield's case, Rahmani suggested that she might struggle to present a self-defense argument convincingly. She might also face challenges in persuading the jury, given the disputable motives leading up to the alleged murder. Furthermore, the apparent lack of physical evidence of domestic violence during the incident might complicate her claim of self-defense.   Discussing the stand-your-ground law, Rahmani elucidated that it often applies to cases involving an intruder but is less clear-cut in instances of domestic violence. He explained, "I know stand-your-ground allows a defendant to have a case dismissed before it gets to a jury. But really, in your own home, even states that aren't stand-your-ground states per se, right? I mean, every state has this castle doctrine."   When it comes to self-defense cases, Rahmani expressed their unpredictable nature. He remarked, "Self-defense, in my opinion, those are the toughest cases to predict what a jury's gonna do." Drawing parallels with famous self-defense cases such as Trayvon Martin and Kyle Rittenhouse, he suggested that the outcome of Benefield's case would largely depend on the presentation of facts at trial and the portrayal of the victim.   In conclusion, examining the Ashley Benefield case on the "Hidden Killers" podcast elucidates the intricacies of self-defense claims and the stand-your-ground defense. The coming trial promises to be closely watched as it navigates the complexities of these legal provisions. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Celebrating our 150th episode, we're sharing some of our listener favorites, starting with our good friend, Jim Clemente. Unfortunately, his story is all too common, as we see with recent news of the Baltimore Catholic Church, so incredibly prevalent still. This episode originally aired on April 19, 2021 as Ep #45.What would you do if you came face to face with the man that molested you when you were a teen? When Jim Clemente walked into the Bronx home of his former summer camp director, it wasn't for old time's sake. The twenty-something Clemente was wearing a wire. Federal agents and an NYPD detective were listening in.And his old camp boss, Michael J. O'Hara, was showing Clemente pictures of kids he'd molested — just like he'd abused Clemente a decade prior. Clemente had convinced the predator he was a kindred spirit and had to keep his cool, or the criminal case being built against O'Hara — a Boy Scout leader, Catholic school teacher and youth-basketball coach believed to have sexually abused hundreds of kids — would fall apart. (Excerpt from New York Post Article)_______In April of 2021, President Biden announced National Child Abuse Prevention Month. He calls upon all Americans to protect our Nation's greatest resource — its children — and to take an active role in supporting children and parents and creating safe communities filled with thriving families. For more information on what you can do: https://www.childwelfare.gov/topics/preventing/preventionmonth/_____At least 1 in 6 men have been sexually abused or assaulted. About Carolyn Carolyn Parker, also known as The Overcoming Queen, is a survivor of domestic abuse who is now a heart-led author, personal development advocate, and founder of Restoring Self-Belief. Her journey began in 2002 when she fell into a toxic relationship with a younger man during a mental health crisis. Unaware of the signs of domestic abuse, Carolyn did not recognize the progressive coercive control she was experiencing until it escalated to a life-threatening point. After several attempts to leave, she finally ended the relationship in 2005. In 2006, Carolyn met her second abuser. Though the pattern of abuse was different, there was still an undercurrent of control. It wasn't until 2013 that she realized things were not going to improve and instructed him to leave. Despite her challenges, Carolyn qualified as a chartered physiotherapist in 1980 and worked in several NHS hospitals before and between having her two daughters. After suffering a nervous breakdown, she established a private care support business as a sole trader in 2011, which she still runs today. Carolyn's life changed in 2019 when she discovered the power of personal development and a growth mindset. She founded Restoring Self Belief with the intention of sharing these tools and strategies with a broader audience through social media and personal coaching. When Covid-19 lockdowns began in 2020, Carolyn took the opportunity to write a chapter in a collaborative book and record a podcast episode about her journey, leading her to discover a hidden talent for heart-led writing. She has since contributed to other books, including Beautifully Broken, which launched in October 2022. Carolyn's debut memoir, From a Place Called Shame, was released in November 2022. Through her work, Carolyn's mission is to turn the trials and taboos of her past into talking points that give others hope for the future. She aims to write and speak about these often-avoided topics to increase awareness, understanding, and acceptance of those who often suffer in silence. With her personal coaching and heart-led writing, Carolyn inspires others to overcome their own challenges and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. Like me, Mike is an ex-pastor who tells an incredible tale of not only being in church ministry for decades, but also how he transitioned out of both pastoral ministry and Christianity too. In his journey to become a therapist, he developed a speciality of supporting and representing a great number of church abuse victims also. [14:59] The Abuse and Domestic Violence Coaching Process [18:55] Self-Care for Coaches Helping Abuse Victims [21:40] Parting Thoughts  How Abuse Survivors Can Benefit From Coaching Domestic abuse is a traumatic, life-altering experience that, unfortunately, most people in today's society have lived through personally. The number of domestic abuse cases has been rising these past few years, yet the number of people seeking help is on a frustrating decline. And while recovering from abuse takes time and demands ongoing support, there is help. Reach out to a coach who will support, educate, validate, and empower you on your journey to healing. Survivors of domestic abuse can be in a fragile state, and it can be challenging for outsiders to empathize with them. But if you are a coach, this specialty can be full of landmines, and if you're not trained, you can do more harm than good.  Disclaimer, do not try to coach on this topic if you are not properly trained. Domestic Abuse is More Than Just Physical Abuse When the word abuse is mentioned, most people automatically think of physical violence. And while physical abuse is what's common in most relationships, abuse is so much more than just physical. It can be physical, emotional, verbal, financial, or sexual. But the most important thing to understand is that no form of violence is more or less important than the other. As long as somebody is getting hurt, then something needs to be done.  If you are in a place where you are experiencing any abuse, please reach out for help. Yes, all types of abuse are different, they are all heartbreaking, and no one ever deserves to experience them. And if you feel called to coach others in this specialty, reach out to Dr. Bush and express your interest in this training by emailing admin@pccca.org RESOURCES: Comprehensive Christian Coach Handbook:  www.amazon.com/Comprehensive-Christian-Coach-Handbook-Second/dp/0692853634 Spirit-Led Marketing: pccca.org/slm Join the Courageous Christian Coaching Tribe: pccca.org/tribe Free Christian Coaching Masterclass: pccca.org/getcertified

Donna Andersen, author of Lovefraud.com has a story to tell. She married a man originally from Sydney, Australia. He took $227,000 from her. He cheated with at least six different women during their 2.5-year relationship. He had a child with one of the women. Then, 10 days after she left him, he married the mother of the child. It was the second time he committed bigamy.Lies mixed with truth. His story would be plausible, but she'd notice inconsistencies. When she questioned the discrepancies, he would either explain them away or accuse her of being paranoid.Totally brazen lies. A normal person, even one prone to exaggeration, would never think of making extraordinary claims that he had made.Andersen left him but it wasn't until she went through the papers he left in her house and called some of the “other women” that she realized everything he told her was a lie.Her therapist suggested that the man might be a sociopath. After researching the topic she found a book, called Without Conscience by Dr. Robert Hare, an international expert on psychopaths (a form of sociopath). His book described he ex husband precisely.Anderson was shocked. She was even more shocked to learn that millions of these human predators live among us.She then realized that she had an important story to tell — and a warning to convey. After launching Lovefraud.com, Anderson wrote eight books. Her latest book is Senior Sociopaths — How to Recognize and Escape Lifelong Abusers. This is the first to document that 14 million Americans over age 50 may be sociopaths, and their behavior is just as bad, or worse, as they age.
