For many families there is a disconnect between having a baby in hospital and accessing services afterwards, including the Child Health Service. Families often experience difficulty knowing who can help and health literacy is low. AEDC data shows that up to 20-30% of children from some suburbs in the Logan area are “not school ready” and are vulnerable on 2 or more of the 5 key domains of early childhood development- well above the national average of 11%. The Journey Facilitator is in a unique position to be influenced by and have influence on both families, children and health care professionals across multiple sites. The Journey Facilitator is instrumental in developing processes that foster collaborative relationships to achieve the quadruple aim of health care (improve clinical outcomes and population health; enhance clinician and consumer experience; promote streamlining of services reducing health care costs and waste).

He spent his first nine years under the watchful eye of his Pop-Pop and Mimi (an immigrant from Cuba) while his parents dedicated themselves to their education. In 1984, the family moved to Boulder, Colorado, where his parents continued their studies. Daily life in a progressive college town taught him the value of equity and diversity. Mayor Tuerk's brilliant “second mom”, Nana Kathleen, reinforced that message, saying “value your whole self, be grateful for your blessings, and there is no difference in people simply because of color; racism is a human-generated distinction, cruel and wrong. The Mayor's education after high school started in Philadelphia, where DIY punk rock and liberal arts education set the foundation for discovering the value of community and trusting people to develop ingenious solutions to the challenges that they face. Love and curiosity pushed him around the world over the next ten years, including stints in Bellingham, WA; Charleston, SC; Havana, Cuba; Columbia, SC; Managua, Nicaragua. In South Carolina with his now-wife, Karen, he pursued his love of global commerce by completing his Bachelor of Science in International Business at the College of Charleston before earning an MBA at the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. Mayor Tuerk had always wanted to return to his Eastern Pennsylvania roots, so in 2004, he and Karen moved to Allentown because they were attracted to the energy and diversity of the city. After taking time off to care for their two daughters, Karen became a lecturer in Environmental Science at Muhlenberg College in 2011. They have two daughters, Amelia and Margot. In 2008, Mayor Tuerk took a position with the Allentown Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) where he learned the power of building coalitions to solve problems. He helped to establish the Urban Manufacturing Alliance, which is a national coalition of cities dedicated to strengthening their manufacturing economies. He also worked diligently to develop resources at the Bridgeworks Enterprise Center, helping AEDC earn a grant from the Economic Development Administration and a visit from the US Secretary of Commerce in 2012. Additionally, he cofounded the Lehigh Valley's first coworking space and first community-operated “hackerspace,” where individuals with shared creative pursuits can meet and collaborate. In 2013, he joined Don Cunningham to transform the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC). Starting as the Director of Research and Innovation, he led a data initiative to contextualize the region's economy for local stakeholders and national developers. As Vice President of Administration, he rebuilt LVEDC's internal systems and finances, and established a Salesforce platform for managing economic development projects. After becoming LVEDC's Vice President of Economic Development in 2015, he led the group in attracting billions of dollars in economic growth in the Lehigh Valley and creating thousands of jobs for its residents. His success in this role led him to become the nationally known spokesperson for economic development in the Lehigh Valley. LVEDC was recognized as a Top 20 Economic Development Organization by Site Selection magazine in 2019, and then again in 2020. In 2020, Matt stepped down from his position at LVEDC to run for Mayor. He hopes to bring his fresh ideas and experience to the city, build coalitions, and serve all of Allentown's residents with a government that reflects the city's incredible diversity. In his spare time, Mayor Tuerk is a lover of languages and a runner of marathons. He speaks Spanish, Portuguese, and French, and has spent the past three years learning Chinese. His next challenge is Arabic. He began running marathons in 2013 and has completed the distance 18 times, including New York and Chicago. He has run in the Boston Marathon twice, and his personal best of 3:06 in Chicago makes him eligible for the 2021 Boston Marathon. Nigerian Electricity Suppliers Plan to Increase Tariffs Beginning of Year 2020

Business Drive

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 22, 2019 6:50

From 2020, Nigerians will experience a hike in the price of electricity supply, as the Federal government has increased the price to be paid for the service by consumers. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) revealed that consumers will have to pay an additional sum of between N8 and N14 for every kilowatt-hour of energy provided by their respective distribution companies (DisCos). Information contained in the NERC documents states that the tariff increase for each DisCo differs. NERC also revealed the actual cost-reflective tariff for each of the 11 power distribution companies operating in Nigeria.   What Abuja DisCo’s (AEDC) customers pay currently and what will be paid from next year is an increase of N9.8/kWh. Similarly, for Benin DisCo (BEDC), the difference between what is currently being paid and the new tariff from next year is an increase of N9.75/kWh. For Eko DisCo, tariff from 2017 to 2019 per kWh was N28.3 in each of the years, while those of 2020 and 2021 were put at N36.8 and N39.2. The difference between what Eko DisCo’s customers pay currently and what they will pay from next year is an increase of N8.5/kWh. It was learnt that customers under Enugu Disco will get a tariff increase of N10.6/kWh from next year. According to the Commission, the allowed end-user tariffs for Enugu Disco for 2019, 2020 and 2021 per kWh are N35.3, N45.9 and N41.6, respectively. For residents who are served by Ibadan DisCo, the end-user allowed tariffs for 2019, 2020 and 2021 per kWh are N30.6, N39.7 and N44.2, respectively. This implies that by next year, power consumers who get supply from Ibadan DisCo will witness an increase of N9.1/kWh in their tariff. In Ikeja DisCo’s franchise areas, customers will have to pay additional N8.2/kWh from next year. This is because the end-user allowed tariffs in the order from NERC put the tariffs for 2019, 2020 and 2021 per kWh at N27.3, N35.5 and N37.1 respectively. Also, in Jos Disco, tariff increases by N10.1/kWh, as consumers under this Disco will have to pay N43.9/kWh by 2020, as against the current N33.8/kWh. Kaduna DisCo’s power consumers will pay an increase of N9/kWh. The end-user allowed tariffs for 2019, 2020 and 2019 per kWh for Kaduna DisCo, as represented by NERC, are N30.3, N39.3 and N41.7, respectively. Also, for Kano DisCo, NERC increased the end-user allowed tariffs from N30.1/kWh in 2019 to N44.7/kWh in 2020 and N41.8/kWh in 2021. This implies that residents who are served by this DisCo will witness an increase of N14.6/kWh in the tariff they pay for electricity. Recent Development: The latest tariff may not come as a surprise just as the government had clearly been premediating the plans to increase electricity tariffs. Nairametrics in an earlier publication in June reported that electricity tariff might rise. The Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Dr. Usman Gur Mohammed, hinted this while disclosing the Federal Government’s readiness to inject $1.7 billion into the DisCos. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support Learn more about your ad choices. Over half of Humboldt County employers say they've had difficulty in hiring. At the same time time, local job seekers, especially graduating college students, say they'd like to work locally but can't find quality jobs. How can both of these things be true? There is a disconnect between employers and job seekers and research into data by the Arcata Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) shows that. " Workforce Weekend " is a tool AEDC is hoping will bridge the divide. "It's kind of a cross between Match. com ... and a job fair," says AEDC's Susan Seaman, "we're building a portal that helps everyone find their right fit." Seaman described how the data gathered by the county workforce development board and HSU's school of business gave her the clues that led to creating the online platform. "In the HSU research they asked employers how professional they thought applicants were and it was very low. And they asked applicants how professional they felt they were and it was very high." One
