In this wide-ranging conversation, Khristi Lauren Adams, author of "Womanish Theology," discusses her personal journey of discovering God through the lens of black girlhood. She reflects on the importance of integrating one's lived experiences with theological study, and how viewing Scripture and theology through diverse cultural perspectives can deepen our understanding of the divine. Adams shares insights from her interviews with young black girls, highlighting their unique perspectives on salvation, prayer, and the presence of God in the face of suffering and evil. She emphasizes the need for empathy, openness, and a willingness to learn from marginalized voices, rather than imposing one's own agenda or beliefs. We explore themes of identity, community, and the universal truths found in Jesus' teachings, underscoring the potential for reconciliation and redemption when we approach theological inquiry with humility and a spirit of curiosity. Join us as we discover God through the lens of black girlhood. Khristi Lauren Adams is a speaker, author, youth advocate and ordained Baptist minister. "Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make." - Bram Stoker The Buzzards go goth on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, as we speak with acclaimed horror author Steven Van Patten and talk about all things vampires, werewolves and the shape of horror to come. Van Patten is the author of the trilogy Brookwater's Curse - Volume1, Volume 2 and Volume 3: Extinction Agenda - about a former Georgian plantation slave named Christian Brookwater who becomes a powerful vampire. He becomes an agent for a secret vampire law enforcement who has to keep those damn werewolves in check among other supernatural creatures of mayhem. Brookwater also can't seem to curb his murderous impulses when confronted by obnoxious racists, much to his agency's chagrin. The hero's journey continues as vampire politics, civil war and love triangles abound. Van Patten has also written a two-book series, Killer Genius: She Kills Because She Cares and Killer Genius 2: Attack of the Gym Rats, about a woman named, appropriately enough, Kendra the Killer Genius. She is a super intelligent serial killer with a conscience and only kills those she conceives to be racist, sexist, abusive or dangerously criminal. In the sequel she takes on sexual predators and the Russian mob. He also wrote a children's novel called Rudy's Night Out about a young boy who sneaks out at night to a party and discovers a scary world out there. Will his father - a man with a secret and the last name Brookwater...hmmm - find him in time?! You'll just have to read it to find out for yourself! He is also a co-author of two anthology series - Hell at the Way Station and Hell at Brooklyn Tea. The former he co-wrote with acclaimed author Marc L. Abbott and the latter with Abbott and Kirk Johnson. They are stories of horror centered around Brooklyn, where Van Patten grew up, and a framing device includes the authors themselves as participants in the supernatural shenanigans. Hell at the Way Station won two African-American Literary Awards including Best Anthology and Best in Science Fiction. Van Patten also won an award for Best Independent Publisher for his Laughing Black Vampire Productions publishing company. Van Patten is a member of the New York Chapter of the Horror Writers Association as well as a member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). In his spare time he has done some stage managing for several television shows. He also wrote some television episodes for a series called "Viral Vignettes." The Buzzards get all nerded out with Mr. Van Patten as they talk about his books, his publishing company, his fascination with horror, horror movies and the mighty borough of Brooklyn. So, concoct your elixir of absinthe with a sugar cube and some water, turn out the lights and get ready to be thoroughly entranced by the new prince of darkness. The Buzzards get eerie with Steven Van Patten. Please remember to subscribe to us on YouTube, iTunes or Spotify for all future and old episodes. Her first novel, All I Need to Get By, was nominated for best new author at the African American Literary Awards and Sophfronia was hailed by Henry Louis Gates Jr. as "one of the best writers of her generation." She is a prolific writer whose work spans both fiction and nonfiction, and her other books include Unforgivable Love, Love's Long Line, and This Child of Faith: Raising a Spiritual Child in a Secular World, which she co-wrote with her son Tain. Her essays “The Legs On Which I Move” and “Why I Didn’t Go to the Firehouse” are listed in the Best American Essays series. Her next book is The Seeker and the Monk: Everyday Conversations with Thomas Merton, and is out now from Broadleaf Books. The recipient of a 2020 Artist Fellowship Grant from the Connecticut Office of the Arts, Sophfronia holds degrees from Harvard and the Vermont College of Fine Arts. She is currently director of Alma College’s MFA in Creative Writing, which is a low-residency grad program based in Alma, Michigan. This interview is a little bit of a departure from our usual subject matter of authors talking about their latest books and instead Sophfronia and I will be doing a deep dive on MFA pedagogy. As you know, the DIY MFA philosophy is not anti-MFA, and we strive to complement what MFA programs are already doing quite well. And, of course, when I build new curriculum for DIY MFA, I draw from my own experiences as a MFA student, along with several other sources as well. I am beyond thrilled to have Sophfronia on the show to talk about writing, MFA programs, and a writer’s education. Embed Audio Here In this episode Sophfronia and I discuss: How her background in journalism, ghostwriting, and her desire to coach other writers inspired her to pursue an MFA. What a low residency MFA program can prepare you for as a full time career writer and the logistics and benefits of attending one. Why reading and building community are imperative to the DIY MFA experience as well as a writer’s life and growth. Plus, their #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: diymfa.com/351

Success is not in your comfort zone and once you accept that it opens up all types of possibilities. Our guest Tamika Newhouse knows all too well about moving outside your comfort zone. In this episode, she shares some powerful truths and aha moments that she has endured during her personal journey from teen mom to CEO. Limitations are only as strong as you allow them to be. You must be willing to shift your words, your mindset and sometimes your surroundings to be able to achieve success. Tamika can share all about limitations. As we know when someone has a child at any age there are those in the world that look at the mother as now being handicapped. Well, Tamika showed the world that she wouldn't be limited by anything. There is also the idea that one must pay close attention to their creative wellness. Our mental health, as a creative, needs to be a priority because of all the people and scenarios we come in contact with. Many creatives find themselves depleted and stressed out due to the everyday wear and tear of being a CEO. That is one of the reasons Tamika created a wellness weekend retreat for creatives in Atlanta. It takes a lot of mental strength to go on this journey. How many of you have gone through some form of mental fatigue from your business, your job, relationships or just from life in general? Ask yourself these questions:Do you feel depleted at the end of the day? Are you frustrated or uninterested in your business?Do you find yourself getting frustrated with people easily? From teen mom to CEO by the age of twenty, Tamika Newhouse, the author of 16 novels, has landed on numerous bestsellers' lists and is the winner of 8 African American Literary Awards. To date, she has published nearly 200 titles, launched the careers of hundreds of writers, and produces the only entertainment award show for writers, called the AAMBC Literary Awards. She recently served as co-producer and writer on the bio-pic for legendary Hip-Hop group 8 Ball & MJG film, Comin Out Hard. In 2019 she released Traces of Mika, an audio series, channeling her journey as a young entrepreneur and influencer in the publishing industry.Social Media Handles (LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.)Twitter and Instagram @tamikanewhousehttps://www.facebook.com/bossladytamika

She's a master at naming things. Just you wait 'till you listen to the episode) Flashback for context: seven years ago, I was going through a huge life shift. Or, rather, I was about to go through a huge life shift - I just didn't know it yet. I had just moved to Venice Beach, gotten a steady job at one of my favorite fitness studios, finally gotten over a rough breakup, and was starting to feel more like myself than ever. I was starting to realize that maybe the life I'd planned out for myself wasn't the life I was really supposed to lead...and instead of being scary, that glimmer of a thought was actually starting to feel freeing. Basically, all of my channels were open for change - I just didn't know what was coming next. It was also around this time I started running. Every week, I'd lace up my New Balances and drive to the long stretch of grass along Ocean Avenue and just go. I'd call them my thinking runs: the time that was just for me, where I could zone out and tune into what my heart was really saying. One day before a thinking run, I was looking for a way to tune into the radio show I'd been listening to on my drive over (I miss the car radio in NYC!) and came across these new things called "podcasts." My first observation? There weren't a lot of female hosts. Finally, I found one. The Goddess Factory by Abiola Abrams. Looked promising. I could get down with goddess talk. Well, I ended up becoming HOOKED. I found Abiola's enthusiastic yet no-bs outlook on life just the type of inspiration I needed. It felt like she wasn't just talking directly TO me, but like she was a friend who was giving me permission to be as passionate, deep, silly, funny, and BIG as I wanted to be. It was just what I needed to catapult me into the next stage of my life, which ultimately, has led me right here. It sounds kinda cheesy to say I couldn't have done it without her, but honestly - I couldn't have done it without her. I LOVE each twist and turn of this conversation, talking everything from what to do when you feel like other people just don't quite GET what you're about yet and sticking to your guns when it seems like everyone else is getting ahead, to getting your voice heard even when other people are trying to manipulate it to their liking along the way. We also talk about being an extroverted introvert and getting swept up in the bigness of whatever's going on around you, and whether you're super extroverted or incredibly introverted, how to stay grounded AND enthusiastic even when life is demanding a lot of you (especially when things are really good and borderline overwhelming, which are the times that can sometimes throw us off the most if you're anything like me). We seriously could have talked for ages - you'll hear, her energy and genuine enthusiasm are infectious. Make sure you download this one everywhere you listen to podcasts, because you're gonna wanna go back and re-listen later. I know I will.
