POPULARITY
Opening Doors: The Unlikely Alliance Between the Irish and the Jews in America (St. Martin's Press, 2024) tells the extraordinary story of how Irish and Jewish immigrants worked together to secure legitimacy in America.Popular belief holds that the various ethnic groups that emigrated to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century regarded one another with open hostility, fiercely competing for limited resources and even coming to blows in the crowded neighborhoods of major cities. One of the most enduring stereotypes is that of rabidly anti-Semitic Irish Catholics, like Father Charles Coughlin of Boston and the sensationalized Gangs of New York trope of Irish street thugs attacking defenseless Jewish immigrants. In Opening Doors, Hasia R. Diner, one of the world's preeminent historians of immigration, tells a very different story; far from confrontational, the prevailing relationships between Jewish and Irish Americans were overwhelmingly cooperative, and the two groups were dependent upon one another to secure stable and upwardly mobile lives in their new home. The Irish had emigrated to American cities en masse a generation before the first major wave of Jewish immigrants arrived, and had already entrenched themselves in positions of influence in urban governments, public education, and the labor movement. Jewish newcomers recognized the value of aligning themselves with another group of religious outsiders who were able to stand up and demand rights and respect despite widespread discrimination from the Protestant establishment, and the Irish realized that they could protect their political influence by mentoring their new neighbors in the intricacies of American life. Opening Doors draws from a deep well of historical sources to show how Irish and Jewish Americans became steadfast allies in classrooms, picket lines, and political machines, and ultimately helped one another become key power players in shaping America's future. In the wake of rising anti-Semitism and xenophobia today, this informative and accessible work offers an inspiring look at a time when two very different groups were able to find common ground and work together to overcome bigotry, gain representation, and move the country in a more inclusive direction. Hasia R. Diner is a professor emeritus of American Jewish History and former chair of the Irish Studies program at New York University. She is the author of numerous books on Jewish and Irish histories in the U.S., including the National Jewish Book Award winning We Remember with Reverence and Love, which also earned the Saul Veiner Prize for most outstanding book in American Jewish history, and the James Beard finalist Hungering for America. Diner has also held Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships and served as Director of the Goren Center for American Jewish History. Geraldine Gudefin is a French-born modern Jewish historian researching Jewish family life, legal pluralism, and the migration experiences of Jews in France and the United States. She is currently a research fellow at the Hebrew University's Avraham Harman Research Institute of Contemporary Jewry, and is completing a book titled An Impossible Divorce? What is it about being terrified that brings people so much joy? Why do some relish thrills so chilling it could lead to heart palpitations? This is certainly the time of year curiosity gets the best of anyone looking for a scary good time. When you think of creepy stories — whether in real life or in the movies — strange, unexplained things almost always happen in places that have stood the test of time. They are old, musty and mysterious. Think of the creepy hotel in The Shining, the mansion in The House on Haunted Hill or the house in The Amityville Horror. All places that send a chill up the spine just thinking about them. This week on Florida's Fourth Estate, hosts Matt Austin and Ginger Gadsden get the haunting details on what is considered to be one of, if not the most haunted cities in America: St. Augustine. The man brave enough to pull back the curtain on the dark side this haunting season is Stephen Mitchell. Mitchell, with Historic Tours of America, knows about things that go bump in the night in St. Augustine because he has been bumped by a spirit or two while working at the Old Jail in St. Augustine. Mitchell has been featured on shows that conduct paranormal investigations and St. Augustine is a hot spot. Mitchell said while doing research on ghost tours in America he discovered the first ghost tours may have started in St. Augustine. “There is so much history and so much happens, people come looking for the ghosts and they have been for much longer than we've had ghost tours,” he said. “But the ghost stories keep building and building and so much keeps happening there it's no wonder that hundreds of tours go out on any given night all over the city. It's really incredible.” One of those takes place at the Old Jail on San Marcos Avenue, just north of downtown. It served the city from 1891 to 1953 and housed some of the most violent criminals within its walls. A tourist attraction now but at one point the Old Jail carried out capital punishments in public. It should come as no surprise when Mitchell explains there are nightly sightings and encounters with spirits and dark energies at the jail. Mitchell said each night there is a paranormal investigation being conducted. “Every night people are in there from midnight until two o'clock looking for the ghosts, looking for evidence, looking for a sign of some sort of paranormal activity because in that building something happens at least once every 24 hours that nobody can explain. It is truly and certifiably, incredibly haunted,” he said. Mitchell has had his own encounters with dark forces in the Old Jail. He said he has come across things he can't explain, like the time he was pushed down some stairs. “I was going up the staircase, it was late in the day and all of a sudden I was stopped. I could feel that push right on my chest as it pushed me backward right back down the stairs. I didn't get hurt. I didn't fall entirely. I was able to catch myself, turn around and run the rest of the way,” he said. If you would like to hear more about the local haunts in St. Augustine take a tour and experience the unknown for yourself. Click here for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. ArchCity Defenders and Action St. Louis present the premiere collaborative podcast, "Under The Arch." Your hosts Blake Strode, Executive Director of ArchCity Defenders, and Kayla Reed, Director of Action St. Louis, explore the issues facing our community and the people working to transform them. Our next episode features a special conversation with author and professor Walter Johnson discussing his book "The Broken Heart of America: St. Louis and the Violent History of the United States," which was published in 2020. In this highly acclaimed book, Johnson challenges readers to think analytically about racial capitalism by joining the history of the US Empire to the history of anti-Black racism, suggesting that St. Louis's own anti-Black racial history is influenced by the extermination and removal of Native American populations.Join the conversation around this week's episode using #UnderTheArch and send us your feedback at underthearchpod@gmail.com. For this episode, we spoke with Charles Postel about his recent book *Equality: An American Dilemma, 1866-1896.* After the Civil War, many social movements in favor of "equality" flourished in the U.S. -- champions of racial, sexual, regional, and economic equality pressed their case like never before. Organizations like the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and the Knights of Labor mobilized women and workers on a massive scale, while the Grange - a project initiated by federal bureaucrats from D.C. - assembled farmers into the largest and most coherent organ for class-interest in the country. Each had to face up to the practical dilemmas of pursuing national political power in an uneven and divided country.****** LINKS *******The Populist Vision* - https://global.oup.com/academic/product/the-populist-vision-9780195176506*Equality: An American Dilemma* - https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780809079636/equality"If They Repeal the Progressive Era, Should We Care?" - https://www.jstor.org/stable/43903026*** REFRESHERS ***The Grange - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Grange_of_the_Order_of_Patrons_of_HusbandryWomen's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman%27s_Christian_Temperance_UnionFrances Willard - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_WillardKnights of Labor - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_of_LaborTerence Powderly - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terence_V._PowderlyChinese Exclusion Act - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Exclusion_ActHomestead Acts - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestead_ActsFrances Ellen Watkins Harper - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_HarperElizabeth Cady Stanton - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Cady_StantonHenry George - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_GeorgeThomas Piketty - Capital in the Twenty-First Century - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_in_the_Twenty-First_CenturyT. St. Louis, Missouri is the city with the highest rate of police shootings in the United States. It's the city with an 18 year difference in life expectancy between Black and white neighborhoods which stand just 10 miles apart. It's the city where, after Mike Brown was shot in 2014, the Black Lives Matter movement was born. It is also, now, the city whose history offers essential lessons about the history of the United States as a whole, thanks to Walter Johnson's indispensable new book The Broken Heart of America: St. Louis and the Violent History of the United States (Basic Books). The book tracks how anti-Blackness in America has long had everything to do with imperialism, working as much by removal as by predation. Imperial racism was at play when 19th-century settlers demanded Native land west of the Mississippi as compensation for abolition, when they tried to make the end of slavery would go hand in hand with the removal of free black people, or when they massacred black workers for strike-breaking instead of organizing across racial divides in the 20th century. However, the book also shows that the city's radicalism has never been far from the surface. From the 1877 strike where the proletariat literally took control of the city for a day, to the 1930s when Black women led successful multiracial organizing, people have fought the racial capitalist status quo. The status quo has fought back, shapeshifting from genocide to lynching to strike-breaking to redlining, ultimately building white supremacy into the very fabric of the city's material infrastructure. It is this “structural racism” which we need to understand and unbuild if we are to create truly anti-racist, decolonial futures, and this book is a must-read for everyone – historians, organizers, allies, citizens – interested in taking that first step. Walter Johnson is Winthrop Professor of History and Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. Aparna Gopalan is a Ph.D. Candidate in Social Anthropology at Harvard University studying the reproduction of inequality through development projects in rural western India. Rebecca Fraser is a writer, journalist, and broadcaster whose work has been published in Tatler, Vogue, The Times, and The Spectator. President of the Bronte Society for many years, she is the author of a biography of Charlotte Bronte that examines her life in the context of contemporary attitudes about women. Her last book was The Story of Britain, a single-volume history of how England was governed over the past 2000 years. Now, just in time for Thanksgiving, comes her new book, The Mayflower: The Families, the Voyage, and the Founding of America (St. Martin's Press 2017). It tells the story of the Plymouth colony by focusing on the adventures and trials of Edward Winslow, who sailed over on the Mayflower in 1620, and then his son Josiah, who played a crucial role in the growing wars with the American Indians in the late 1670s. Over the course of the hour, we talk about how Edward, a largely ignored protagonist of America's founding story, was foundational to maintaining early relationships with the Indians (including for the exchange of food for the ‘first' Thanksgiving). Fraser talks about how Edward's ideal of community, and Plymouth's more ‘tolerant' society compared to the Massachusetts Bay Colony to its north, was troubled by the influx of new colonists, the consolidation of colonial governance in the region, patriarchal power grabs, and the re-entrenchment of religious orthodoxies. Both in our discussion and in the book—a dramatic, highly detailed narrative of promise and nightmarish turns—Fraser adds much nuance to the emotional, psychological, and material complexities of the early colonists conflicted lives. We dive into Edward's interest in and writing of ethnographical accounts, particularly of the Indians, as well as the place of women in the Plymouth story. Fraser reveals the wry perspectives women take on the men in their lives as we come to feel the effects of deaths, fluctuating fortunes, the formations of new churches, and the dangers of giving birth on the structure of life. The particularly adventurous energy, and personality, of Edward Winslow, and his less curious son's re-assertion of an English identity, are the engines of the story. Their paths afford a new view of both the intercultural relationships and negotiations that kept the nascent country alive, and their eventual dismissal by the next generation. The result is a war with the Indians that would forever change the story. Michael Amico holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale University. His dissertation, The Forgotten Union of the Two Henrys: The True Story of the Peculiar and Rarest Intimacy of the American Civil War, is about the romance between Henry Clay Trumbull and Henry Ward Camp of the Tenth Connecticut Regiment. He is the author, with Michael Bronski and Ann Pellegrini, of “You Can Tell Just by Looking”: And 20 Other Myths about LGBT Life and People (Beacon, 2013), a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in Nonfiction.
