We are diving into part two of my conversation with author and advocate Ally Henny. If you missed part one of this conversation I would strongly recommend you check that episode out first so you can hear some context of Ally's life, ministry, and some of her experiences as a Black woman in predominately white Christian spaces, and a glimpse into her journey of allowing herself to speak up and not just allow racism to be what is just an accepted part of her occupying space in the world. Ally shares with us what it can really look like to fight racism from the inside, offers ideas of how to be welcoming in predominately white spaces, and how white people's good intentions can still cause harm if they (including me) aren't willing to lean in when it's uncomfortable and admit we don't know what we don't know. She challenges people to consider what it might look like to embrace discomfort in these conversations. and embracing what we didn't know and engaging people who do know, and then being willing to learn and sit with it. Over the weekend, news broke of another mass shooting, this time in Buffalo, New York. The shooting took place at a grocery store in a predominantly Black neighborhood. 10 people were killed and three others injured. The 18 year old gunman had a racial slur written on the barrel of his gun and livestreamed the shootings. Dr. Jemar Tisby is an author, educator, historian and speaker on a mission to share truths from the Black experience, witnessed and known in his own life, particularly within the Christian sphere. He sums it up this way: “To me as a historian that's what I do is I tell stories. I tell stories of import and consequence and try to contextualize them to make them stand out for how they're still relevant for others today.”  He shares with us today his story of his experiences growing up, and later through becoming a Christian in high school through a predominately white evangelical church where he began the strange dance of growing in his faith and knowledge of Christ, while most commonly being one of the only people of color in the room. Dr. Jemar's story, and his work in trying to call racism out into the light and then address it, especially within the church has been wildly transformative in my life. His book Color of Compromise: The Truth About the American Church's Complicity in Racism was so incredibly eye opening and galvanizing. His next book How to Fight Racism: Courageous Christianity and the Journey Towards Racial Justice takes that to the next level. There's an adult version, and now a youth edition. In our conversation today, Dr. Jemar shares some of the key racial justice ideologies of his books, and how to begin addressing some of the pressing issues we may not even be aware of in our own churches, families, and communities. We want to examine the foundations that have been laid historically and see how they are still impacting people and communities today so that if it's being repeated we do something about it or that we take great stewarding care to dare not repeat it again.  One key point Dr. Jemar makes is that much of the dialogue around racial justice in many Christian spaces is heavy on the diagnosis and light on the prescription. He faces that issue head on in his works, and in this conversation, saturated in scripture and full of a desire to see Christians grow in this area and in their faith as a whole. Dr. Jemar challenges us, equips. and encourages us with how we engage this work of racial justice well and not add to the hurt in our attempts to help.  There is so much that is challenging about this conversation, my friends, but this is hard and holy work. Today I am sitting down with the incredible Kat Armas. Kat is a Cuban-American author and podcaster who is passionate about elevating the voices of women of color, asking big questions and wrestling with American culture to have a more clear view of God and how He makes Himself known through people and their experiences. She invites readers into the wrestle of our ideas about wisdom, or ideas we have developed about what makes someone a “theologian,” and perhaps how we limit who is influential in our faith development in beautiful book Abuelita Faith: What Women on the Margins Teach Us About Wisdom, Persistence and Strength. After being raised in Miami, Florida, surrounded by Cuban culture, and then moving to predominantly white evangelical world in seminary, Kat struggled to find her footing as a woman in male-dominated space, and as a woman of color, raised by women, and called by God to use her gifts for His glory. We'll talk about things like: What do you do when your life doesn't pan out into what may be described as a typical “American” family or faith? How do you really wrestle with the Christianity that has been passed down to you when that's its history? We'll define some buzzword terms and try to take the sting out of them that can keep us from actually having productive conversations about them  like patriarchal vs. matriarchal society, a colonized Jesus vs. Jesus in the context of the Bible. Decolonizing, Deconstruction, etc. We're going deep, friends. This is an opportunity for you to sit at a table where you may not be the most comfortable, but where there is such beauty to behold, things to learn about a culture unique from your own, and a fuller picture of how God makes Himself known in other communities in the world, and how He may have something to share specifically with you about who YOU were uniquely made to be in our homes, in our faith families and the body of Christ as a whole.  Reading Kat's book, and spending time with her has really stretched me. One thing that encourages me so much is that God is there in the midst of our complicated and messy stories of being a human. Jesus meets ALL of us exactly where we are, Living in the middle place, where so much of what we have known and seen, where we're from, and being willing to process a more robust view of God, and seeing Him through the eyes of our friends and neighbors in scripture has just made God all the more powerful, merciful and beautiful to me. It makes the call to go and share the Gospel with ALL nations so much more powerful and dare I say possible? When we are willing to learn about what life may look like for various nations, tribes, tongues and cultures unique from mine, then there is compassion to come together as we are, where we are, and there we can talk about Jesus. There, we can see how much all our stories matter. Your story matters, friend. You matter. Additionally, I don't know who Kat's hermeneutics professor was that said what he said to her, but I pray the Lord meets him and shows him the gift that the daughters of Eve offer to the Kingdom of God no matter where God leads them and regardless of their marital status. We're all being stretched. Jemar Tisby is a historian, writer, and speaker. His first book is The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church's Complicity in Racism (Zondervan, 2019). The episode was recorded just after the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. In that light, Jemar speaks about the history of racism in the American church, and of what it will take to move from complicity to courage for racial justice. Jemar is President of The Witness: A Black Christian Collective, and he is a cohost (with Tyler Burns) of the "Pass the Mic" podcast. After President Trump publicly addressed the unrest following the killing of George Floyd, peaceful protesters were violently dispersed and the president posed for a photo holding a Bible in front of a church. This week, Amanda Tyler and Holly Hollman talk about the photo op and what it means in terms of religious liberty and Christian nationalism. They also review the most recent legal developments related to houses of worship and the coronavirus, including a late-night Supreme Court order and an unexplained change on the CDC's guidance for houses of worship. In the third segment, Amanda and Holly answer listener questions and share important books for self-reflection and action to take a stand against systemic racial injustice. Jemar Tisby is the president of The Witness: A Black Christian Collective, where he writes about race, religion, and culture. He is also the co-host of the Pass the Mic podcast. His first book, The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the American Church's Complicity in Racism, was released earlier this year. He received his M.Div. from Reformed Theological Seminary and is a Ph.D. candidate in history at the University of Mississippi.

With so many contemporary examples of racism in American society, it is tempting to see these as the actions of racist individuals. However, many social critics have increasingly pointed to the structure and system of racism as an active part of American society today, and the Church is no different.
