Welcome To The Party Pal: The Mind-Bending Film & Television Podcast You Didn't Know You Needed!

This episode of Welcome To The Party Pal breaks from its normal singular-focused episodes and dives deeply into not one, but two films. First up (6:06) is the action-comedy blockbuster Fall Guy, directed by David Leitch and written by Drew Pearce, loosely based on the 1980s TV series. The plot follows a stuntman (Ryan Gosling) working on his ex-girlfriend's (Emily Blunt) directorial debut action film, only to find himself involved in a conspiracy surrounding the film's lead actor (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). The cast also features Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, and Winston Duke. That is followed (13:36) by an examination of the weighty themes and cunning black comedy of American Dreamer, a film directed by Paul Dektor (in his feature debut) and written by Theodore Melfi. Based on a segment from the radio show This American Life, it stars Peter Dinklage as a professor who tries to buy the estate of a lonely widow played by Shirley MacLaine. Kim Quinn, Danny Pudi, Danny Glover, and Matt Dillon also star. Join in as hosts Michael Shields and River Jordan talk two very different, but extremely entertaining, films.River Jordan is the author of four novels and three works of creative nonfiction. She holds an MFA from Seattle Pacific University and her work has been featured in Publishers Weekly, Booklist, NPR's Book Talk, the Southern Literary Review, and Radix Magazine among others. When not working on her new novel, A Muddy Grace she can be found bartending at, God on the Rocks, a virtual blues and jazz bar located in the City by the Bay where she has soulful conversations great humans talking about the things they love. Tommy Hilfiger: The Blueprint for Building an Inclusive Global Brand

On this Flight of The Retail Pilot Ken speaks with LEGEND, Tommy Hilfiger, Principal Designer, Tommy Hilfiger Global.Uplifting and inspiring consumers since 1985, Tommy Hilfiger has pioneered one of the world's most recognized premium lifestyle brands. With Hilfiger's vision and leadership as Principal Designer, his eponymous brand celebrates the essence of classic American style with a modern twist. Tommy Hilfiger offers premium quality and value to consumers worldwide under the TOMMY HILFIGER and TOMMY JEANS lifestyles, with a breadth of collections including men's, women's and kids' sportswear, denim, accessories, and footwear.Hilfiger's career in fashion began when he was a high school student in 1969 — opening his first store, People's Place, in his hometown of Elmira, New York. A decade later, he moved to Manhattan to pursue a career in fashion design, before launching his namesake brand with a single menswear collection. Since then, global retail sales of TOMMY HILFIGER products have grown to reach approximately $9.1 billion in 2022, powered by more than 16,000 associates worldwide — present in 100 countries and more than 2,000 retail stores, including its largest global flagship store at tommy.com.Hilfiger has a longstanding passion for philanthropy and making the world a better place for future generations. Through the global TommyCares organization, the brand supports various international initiatives and charities like Save the Children, the World Wildlife Fund and Fashion Minority Alliance. Hilfiger currently sits on the Board of Next for Autism. Through the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Frontier Challenge and People's Place Program, the brand is also making strides in its ambitious vision to create fashion that Wastes Nothing and Welcomes All – which actively focuses on topics such as social and environmental sustainability, diversity, and inclusivity in fashion and beyond.Diverse achievements in business and fashion have earned Hilfiger numerous distinguished awards including the CFDA's prestigious Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, British GQ's Design Legend of the Year in 2020, BFC's Outstanding Achievement Award in 2021 and WWD's John B. Fairchild Honor for Lifetime Achievement in 2022. Hilfiger's life and career have been chronicled in his memoir, American Dreamer, published in November 2016 — reflecting his experiences in the fashion industry from the last 35-plus years. Recounting his early childhood and formative years, it explores the setbacks, triumphs, and sheer determination that drove him to build a multi-billion-dollar global brand.Key takeaways from this interview include:Tommy Hilfiger's Background: Tommy Hilfiger began his journey in retail and design at a young age, starting his own business at 18 years old by opening a retail store -People's Place - selling jeans in 1969. This venture eventually led him to designing and creating products for his stores, culminating in the establishment of his own brand.Innovative Store Concepts: Hilfiger's early stores, particularly People's Place, were not just retail outlets but cultural hubs influenced by music and fashion. They offered a variety of products, hosted band practices, and provided an immersive experience for customers, aligning with the youth culture of the time.Cultural Influences on Brand Identity: Hilfiger aimed to differentiate his brand from traditional preppy styles by infusing it with elements of music, particularly hip-hop, and embracing a more inclusive approach to fashion. This cultural fusion helped establish the personality of the Tommy Hilfiger brand.Disruptive Advertising Strategy: The Hangman ad campaign, conceived by advertising executive George Lois, was a bold and disruptive move that garnered attention for the brand. Despite initial criticism, the controversial campaign succeeded in sparking conversation and establishing Tommy Hilfiger as a distinctive player in the fashion industry.Strategic Partnerships and Growth: Strategic partnerships, such as those with Marjani International and later with Silas Chao and Lauren Stroll, played a crucial role in the brand's growth and expansion. These partnerships facilitated strategic decisions like expanding into Europe and launching successful product lines such as fragrances, contributing to the brand's success and eventual IPO.Archives and Relevance: Both Tommy Hilfiger and Karl Lagerfeld emphasized the importance of going back to fashion archives and making past designs relevant for today's market. This approach ensures a timeless appeal while staying fresh.Strategic Partnerships: The acquisition by Apex and subsequent sale to PVH provided strategic opportunities for Tommy Hilfiger's brand growth. Apex helped in repositioning the company, while PVH's ownership of other brands like Calvin Klein created synergies beneficial for both.Brand Positioning: The positioning of Tommy Hilfiger's brand differs between the US and Europe. Understanding regional customer preferences and pricing strategies is crucial for successful brand positioning.Design Process: Tommy Hilfiger's use of technology, such as 3D design, and the centralization of its design team in Europe contribute to a more efficient and precise design process. This enables faster response to market trends and ensures product quality.Marketing and Brand Communication: The brand utilizes a mix of influencer collaborations, celebrity endorsements, and unique marketing campaigns to amplify its brand message. Embracing digital technologies like augmented reality and exploring AI's potential are also part of the brand's forward-thinking approach to marketing.

This week Megan and Dave tackle AMERICAN DREAMER (2:07), and it ain't pretty. Sure, Peter Dinklage and Shirley MacLaine are fine. And sure, Dave laughed at a few things. But that's about all the positives we have for it (hoo boy, do we get amped up during this talk!). Then Evan, Megan, and Dave watched DAMSEL (22:40), the new dragon's-gonna-eat-ya-but-not-if-I-can-help-it flick starring Millie Bobby Brown as a princess who meets said dragon after a bit of marital subterfuge orchestrated by Robin Wright as her nefarious would-be mother-in-law. Following an uneven opening, we thought it pulled together (even if Dave had some choice things to say about his favorite actor ever, Ray Winstone, who plays Brown's father). And did we like DAMSEL as much as we liked the similar-ish THE PRINCESS from 2022? Over on Patreon, we talk about the 1954 GODZILLA in honor of its 70th anniversary.

In honor of the 40th Anniversary of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, I'm taking a look at dreamwork and how our connection to is has changed in the recent decades. Back then, most dreamers felt they were alone, and the IASD gave them a community where they could share research, insights and help promote the idea that dreams were important for everyone. Today the IASD has grown into a worldwide organization that promote an awareness and appreciation of dreams in both professional and public arenas.Although not there at the beginning, renowned Dream Researcher Kelly Bulkeley has been an integral part of the IASD'S growth over the years. Kelly's knowledge and insights have helped legitimize dreamwork as a serious discipline. He's a past president of the organization and in this episode, he shares his views on dreamwork today and what we can expect in the future. Kelly tells us:• Why he believes the 1980s was the birth of the dream movement.• How he turned heads at his first IASD conference • The reason more people are interested in dreamwork today• The connection between dreams and news events• Why he got interested in collecting dreams – and what he does with them• The connection between dreams and spiritualityIf you're interested in the role of dreams in our world today, check out this fascinating episode of Dream Power Radio.Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D., is a dream researcher and author with a background in the psychology of religion. He is director of the Sleep and Dream Database (SDDb), a Senior Editor of the APA journal Dreaming, and a former President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. He earned a B.A. at Stanford University, an M.T.S. at Harvard Divinity School, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago Divinity School. He is author and editor of several books, including The Wilderness of Dreams (1994), An Introduction to the Psychology of Dreaming (1997), Dreaming Beyond Death (2006), American Dreamers (2008), Dreaming in the World's Religions (2008), Lucid Dreaming (2014), Big Dreams: The Science of Dreaming and the Origins of Religion (2016), Lucrecia the Dreamer: Prophecy, Cognitive Science, and the Spanish Inquisition (2018), and Escape from Mercury (2022) He has written three books that will be published later in 2023: The Scribes of Sleep; 2020 Dreams; and The Spirituality of Dreaming. The Good, The Pod and The Ugly

SPECIAL EPISODE: DENNIS HOPPER'S PAYCHECK ERA IN HORRORNote: We apologize for the title "Hopperween". Earlier in 2022 we released an episode called HOPPED UP covering Dennis Hopper's "madman" period as director, covering Easy Rider, American Dreamer (erroneously called American Movie in the episode by one of our dumber hosts), The Last Movie and, finally, early 80s masterpiece Out of the Blue. For some reason it has become our most popular episode so when contemplating a Halloween episode this year we decided to make a disappointing sequel!Horror expert and screenwriter Erik joins us for THREE horror movies featuring our favorite reformed madman, Dennis Hopper! Hell yeah.  TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE II from 1986 starts us off. Now a cult classic that guest Erik can quote at length. But it was a sharp turn from the grim, somber original that hints at gore it never really shows. For this sequel, returning director Tobe Hooper decides on a... slightly different approach. He also claims the original was funny (ok, yeah...) but that didn't come through so he made sure it was at the forefront here. What results is a bizarre artifact of the 80s, part day-glo, part coke-fueled insanity. Hopper does not look happy here as Lefty but he wields three chainsaws at one point so maybe it evens out?CROW: WICKER PRAYER, or CR4W as we call it, from 2005 is Lance Mungia's follow-up to no-budget cult classic SIX-STRING SAMURAI.  Other than what amounts to a cameo by Hopper, the film features Edward Furlong, David Boreanz, Danny Trejo and podcast legend, Tara Reid. If those actors give you pause about getting within 4,000 feet of this toxic turd, you are correct! This film on the roster almost broke the podcast. If the worst movies make for the best content on our pod, then this may be the greatest segment we have ever recorded. LAND OF THE DEAD, also from 2005 but filmed a few years after CR4W but released a few weeks afterwards, is George Romero's return to the cinematic world of zombies. Class struggles are sadly evergreen in modern society and, sadly, nothing seems to change after the zombie apocalypse. Hopper plays a man Large and in Charge of Fiddler's Green, a Pittsburgh, PA closed-society surrounded by zombies. Romero's patented satire is in full force in what amounts to a minor zombie film in his filmography.  How does it hold up 17 years later? •   The shopping is a big portion of it, we look at the price of the kitchen, the cabinets and the countertop, or would take up the majority of that cost... Right. So once they have that estimate, we then start show rooming, we go on a journey to find the things that they like. So second visit with American Dreamers is always in the showroom, and we kind of think of it as window shopping. Okay, so you're going to pick out what that door style looks like, the colors that you want, do you want custom colors? How custom do that you want them? Do you want them to be in the Sherman Williams pallet? We can use a code number or are you just going to bring me a Swatch or something that you found on the internet? How custom are we talking? What type of door style do you want? What kind of cabinet style do you want? We go through the whole thing. What kind of insights have you seen on Pinterest that you can't live without? (4:02)•   That is mostly the process and it is the longest process, especially because when you're looking at some sort of a CAD drawing or a 3D drawing, or something. We want it to be creative and we want people to think really in-depth about it and how it looks and what it's going to be and make edits. You know, go home, sit on it for a bit, don't just pull the trigger because we do want it to be spectacular. I have a few clients that say, Look, I only know what I know, I would like to do something different and unusual that maybe hasn't happened often or at all yet, what can we do there? And so in those instances, that gives us a chance to really be creative and there's only paper sketches and it doesn't get to go into CAD and I can't show it. (7:21)•   I think when you own a business, okay, you automatically start setting your kids up with expectations of your availability. And that's super important because we want their mindset to be that this is for them, although, that you aren't there all the time, what you're doing is building a future for them. And in order to do that, you can't be home every single day, right? And so I had the most interesting conversation, I heard amongst my kids, because I've got step kids and then I've got a daughter. Okay, so the boys were split, I have two boys, the boys were more of this belief that if you're not home all the time, then you don't love me as much. And my daughter had stepped up to bat that one day because, Brandis' youngest boy our best friends... Okay, which isn't always great to have your kids be able to team up on you, but nevertheless. And she says to him, Well, she goes, How do you think that we are going to be able to go to Disney World? And all, they call us the parents, because it's not exactly Mom and Dad, and she goes, how do you think the parents are going to afford to take us to Disney World and all these cool vacations if they don't get to work, she's like Dominic...They're out there making money so we can have nice things. (26:50)•    You can't just say, Well, I like to X, Y, and Z. Why don't we expand upon that? Okay, why do we have to focus so much on where the missteps are, because honestly, it drives us down as a whole... It does. So that has always been a really big mission of mine, it's my mission, on top of seeing more emails to be interested in construction... Right? That's always one. But yeah, I go to local tech schools and I talk about this, we want to build each other up, I said, You want to look around the room because you don't understand the person three chairs down could be a building inspector one day, right? And two chairs down, might be the foremost master carpenter in his industry and he may be looking for a job one day, and you'll have the inside scoop to scoop him up, because you know him, right? So watch what you say, try to really air on the side of being positive because it really is a reflection of our industry, not just us. 2021 has been kind of a mess, honestly, and Sarah hasn't been reading as much as usual, because *waves hands at the world.* But Hana Khan Carries On is a total delight and exactly the book she needed this year, so we're reading it with you! We'll talk about romcoms, authorial voice, podcasting heroines, about how much we enjoy heroes who deserve a bit of cold storage, about writing contemporaries that reflect the time we live in, and about first person narration and why it works really well when it works really well. Also, Sarah tries to get herself invited to hang out with Uzma Jalaluddin and tries to trademark a Ted Lasso reference all in one episode. It's rough out here. Leave her alone.Get ready for more trailblazers and our Best of 2021 episode this month! Our next read-alongs will be the Tiffany Reisz Men at Work series, which is three holiday themed category romances. Read one or all of them: Her Halloween Treat, Her Naughty Holiday and One Hot December.Show NotesThis week's book is Hana Khan Carries On by Uzma Jalaluddin. Her first novel was Ayesha At Last, which was a Pride & Prejudice retelling. Mindy Kaling is adapting Hana Khan for Amazon. The Folio Society has a new version of Georgette Heyer's Venetia. The introduction is by Stephen Fry, who is a real champion of poetry, including a great book about the joys of reading and writing poetry called The Ode Less Travelled. The dating app invented for Ted Lasso is called Bantr. If you can't identify different voices, maybe it's because we all have podcast voice. In the ReadsRomance family, we call Toronto Clean Chicago….because well, I think it explains itself. The Golden Crescent might be an invented neighborhood for this book, but it seems similar to Toronto's Crescent Town. If you'd like more information about what it means when food or a restaurant is Halal. Perhaps you do not know about biryani, an Indian delicacy, or poutine, a Canadian one.Jen was right about the meaning of the word pillory. This book has aspects of the 1998 movie You've Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, which had a terrible ending. From what we can tell, the NPR of Canada is CBC radio. In some recent books, we get an unflinching portrayals of toxic white women on page---characters like Marissa in this book, or Misty in American Dreamer. Adriana Herrera was a guest on last year for an interstitial about the immigrant experience. Our next read-alongs will be the Tiffany Reisz Men at Work series, which is three books.
