A Taste of Evil (1971), Snowbeast (1977), This House Possessed (1981) We're back on the small screen for our fourth dive into the world of made-for-TV horror—which should tell you something: we love these things. Maybe it's nostalgia from growing up in an era when you couldn't stream whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted. Or maybe it's because some of these films were just plain good—tight, creepy little stories that managed to leave a mark. This time around, we're not talking about the crown jewels of the genre, but rather three solid, middle-of-the-pack entries: well-made, weirdly memorable, and wildly watchable. You've got disturbed minds, ski lodge mayhem, and a haunted house that's a little too into you. If the stories don't grab you, the casts just might. Films mentioned in this episode: 1941 (1979), Abominable (2006), Alien (1979), Amityville Horror (1979), Asylum (1972), Beetlejuice (1988), Beyond the Door (1974), Blazing Saddles (1974), Butcher Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981), City of the Dead (1960), City Slickers (1991), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Don't be Afraid of the Dark (1973), Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), Devil Dog: Hound of Hell (1978), The Devil's Daughter (1973), Double Indemnity (1944), Drag Me to Hell (2009), Duel (1971), Frankenstein: The True Story (1973), Halloween (1978), House by the Cemetery (1981), House that Wouldn't Die (1970), Horror of Dracula (1958), I, Desire (1982), The Dirty Dozen (1967), Jaws (1975), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Night of the Creeps (1986), The Night Stalker (1972), The Night Walker (1964), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987), Psycho (1960), Re-Animator (1985), Salem's Lot (1979), Satan's School for Girls (1973), Scream of Fear (1961), Shriek of the Mutilated (1974), Snowbeast (1977), Strange and Deadly Occurrence (1974), Suspiria (1977), A Taste of Evil (1971), Three Stooges Meet Hercules (1962), This House of Possessed (1981), The Tingler (1959), Trilogy of Terror (1975), Videodrome (1983)
Suggested by our listener Dave Man (thanks, Dave!), this episode dives into the chilling legend of Cortijo Jurado, an abandoned 19th-century mansion near Málaga, Spain. Often called “the Spanish Amityville”, this grand but decaying estate is infamous for satanic rituals, alleged torture chambers, and ghostly encounters.Over the decades, Cortijo Jurado has gained a terrifying reputation as one of the most haunted places in Spain. Locals whisper about missing girls, dark rituals, and paranormal phenomena—from shadowy figures in windows to voices echoing through the empty halls.Anne and Renata dig deep into the history, the hauntings, and the controversies. Is this just a case of gothic folklore run wild, or is there something truly sinister in the shadows?
Tonight, we're stepping into a world where the darkest corners of human nature collide with forces we can't quite explain. This episode is all about true crime cases that twist into the supernatural—murders, trials, and hauntings where the line between evil deeds and otherworldly influence blurs. We're diving into four chilling tales: the infamous Amityville Horror, Arne Cheyenne Johnson's “Devil Made Me Do It” trial, the unsolved Villisca Axe Murders, and the Smurl family's demonic ordeal. These aren't just campfire stories—they're real cases that left investigators, families, and entire communities grappling with questions no one can fully answer. Picture this: a man guns down his family, and the house he leaves behind becomes a nightmare of voices and apparitions. A brutal stabbing leads to a courtroom defense of demonic possession. An axe-wielding killer vanishes, but the echoes of his victims linger in a cursed home. A family fights an unseen tormentor for 15 years, claiming it's hell-bent on their destruction. We've got the gritty details—court records, witness accounts, and expert takes from cops, paranormal investigators, and skeptics alike. Is this just human horror with a spooky twist, or could something truly sinister be at play? “It was chaos, things started flying around, people were screaming.” In 1977, hot on the heels of the publicity they received after the Amityville Horror case – which is show in the cold open of the film – the Warrens claimed that they investigated the happenings in Enfield, undoubtedly drawn there by all the press the case was getting at the time. Before they even arrived at the Hodgson home, several independent observers dismissed the case as a hoax carried out by "attention-hungry" children, but the Warrens would, of course, state that it was a case of demonic possession.Have a question or comment? Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! In this week's episode we explore the world of haunted or otherwise cursed Hollywood films which are quite a bit more numerous, violent and even deadlier than you would first imagine. In the free section of the show we discuss the weird monsters hidden in Return to Babylon, Ti West's Innkeepers and House of the Devil, The Amityville Horror remake, the Dybbuk of The Possession and of course the grizzly deaths associated with the curse of The Omen. In the extended show we go for all the heavy hitters and tell the tale of the misfortune's associated with The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Conjuring, Dark Water (along with some Los Angeles true crime history), the infamous tragedies that orbit Polanski's Rose Mary's Baby and of course the deadly controversies surrounding Spielberg's Poltergeist. Along the way we also speculate about the occult principles which make haunted movies and cursed films even possible in the first place. Thank you and enjoy the show! To tell the story of this once very famous haunted house seems like it should be simple, oh, but it's not. In fact, there's nothing simple about this story at all. But I'm not going to tell you what to believe. I get it – every story gets started for a reason, even if that reason is greed. But believe it or not, there is much about this story that has the potential to be the truth. What part of it? I guess we'll see...Please check out Troy's GoFundMe page here! - https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-troy-taylor-american-hauntings-recover-from-theftNew Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/troytaylorodditiesCheck out our updated website and sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.comWant an episode every week, plus other awesome perks and discounts? The Amityville Horror is a book published in 1977 by Jay Anson and then turned into a cult classic horror film franchise. The story is based on the experience of the Lutz family when they moved into a home in Amityville on Long Island, New York - a home that was the location of a familicide when Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his siblings and parents in 1974. On December 18, 1975, George and Kathy Lutz moved their family into their new house on Ocean Avenue in Amityville, NY, where, just one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo Jr. had murdered all six members of his family. Twenty-eight days later, the Lutz family fled the home, leaving behind all their belongings and vowing never to return again. According to the Lutzes, their time in the house on Ocean Avenue was a nightmare of psychic attacks and demonic activity that put them in fear for their lives. The supposed experience of the Lutz family served as the basis for the iconic haunted house story, The Amityville Horror, and the countless films adapted from or inspired by the original novel. However, unlike most other stories of paranormal experiences, The Amityville Horror became a phenomenon that influenced everything from Ronald DeFeo's criminal defense to the American public's belief in the supernatural. Yet for all their talk of it being a genuine story of demonic activity, in the years since the publication of The Amityville Horror, a large body of evidence from skeptical evaluations to court records and interview transcripts suggest that America's most notorious haunted house might not have been quite so haunted after all.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!!ReferencesAnsen, Jay. 1978. Beware of scams… and beware of haunted objects, ESPECIALLY the objects discussed in this episode. Greg and Dana Newkirk are the world's only full-time paranormal investigators. They have spent their lives collecting and caring for cursed artifacts, possessed dolls, and other mysterious artifacts believed to exhibit supernatural activity. They also joined Two Girls One Ghost on their first ever paranormal investigation at The Conjuring House and have become our paranormal idols. We chose a couple items from their haunted collection to share with you in this episode... but something DID NOT want to be talked about and so, we must warn you: THIS EPISODE MIGHT HAUNT YOU because it haunted us. The following are the haunted items from Greg & Dana's collection that we speak about... or attempt to: The Well of Intentions, The Little Liar Painting, Smiley the Clown, The Corrupted Testament, The Black Hen Planchette and the Conjuring Crystal. Check out the Newkirk's LIVE ON TOUR from September 11th through November 1st: In this incredible live show, join the Newkirks on a journey through the history, folklore, and true-life accounts of supernatural encounters with objects that seem to possess a life of their own. You'll learn the untold truth about famous paranormal cases like The Amityville Horror, discover why the infamous Dybbuk Box is scarier than the demon it's rumored to imprison, and tag along as Greg & Dana reveal how they broke the curse of the Catskills Crone, as featured in their haunting new documentary film The Unbinding! But this show isn't just about sharing terrifying true stories. You'll also come face-to-face with iconic haunted artifacts from the archives of the Newkirk Museum of the Paranormal, using what you've learned about ghosts to help Greg and Dana manifest two new, eerily familiar spirits.. with nothing but the power of your mind. https://www.newkirktour.com/ @pals_animal_life_savers https://www.facebook.com/palscats/ https://palscats.org/ Have ghost stories of your own?
