Episode 195!? This week we are giving our thoughts on "Batman: Beyond the White Knight"! Batman: Beyond the White Knight is an American comic book published by DC Comics under its Black Label imprint. The eight-issue limited series — written and illustrated by Sean Murphy, lettered by AndWorld Design and colored by Dave Stewart — began its monthly publication on March 29, 2022 and ended on February 14, 2023. It is the sequel to both Batman: White Knight (2017–18) and Batman: Curse of the White Knight (2019–20), and is also the fifth installment in Murphy's self-titled Murphyverse line. It is also an adaptation of the animated television series Batman Beyond (1999–2001), with the plot of the comic book being based on the original premise of the TV show. Batman: Beyond the White Knight takes place 12 years after the events which are described in the previous volume Batman: Curse of the White Knight, which ended with Bruce Wayne exposed as Batman to the general public and donating his entire fortune to the people of Gotham City, and then turning himself in to the police. Since that, the city has evolved into a futuristic megalopolis known as "Neo-Gotham". Following the murder of his father Warren, young Terry McGinnis — under the orders of his employer Derek Powers — steals a technologically advanced Batsuit to become the new Batman and avenge his father's death. At the same time, a middle-aged Bruce escapes from prison in an attempt to rid Neo-Gotham of Batman for good, all while a civil war slowly rages through the city and Powers transforms into the supervillain Blight. Batman: Beyond the White Knight received critical acclaim from critics and readers alike, with praise for the comic's plot, dialogue and dynamics between characters, art style, and faithfulness to the source material. A two-issue limited series titled Batman: White Knight Presents: Red Hood — which serves as a prequel to Batman: Beyond the White Knight — began publication on August 2, 2022 and ended on the 23rd of the same month. A six-issue limited series titled Batman: White Knight Presents: Generation Joker — which serves as a follow-up to Batman: Beyond the White Knight — began publication on May 9, 2023. Jace and Rocky from Comic Boom are back with another week of DC Comics. It's a pretty solid wee , but with so many books, the guys are dividing it up into two episodes and here is the part 2! Detective Comics #1042 - We've reached the end of the Hue Vile saga as that villain meets his ultimate fate, but like anything in Gotham, we aren't sure we've seen the last of him. Also while this is a satisfying conclusion and certainly does a great job leading into Fear State, where the story really shines is in the humor and quieter moments writer Mariko Tamaki brings to the story. The back-up story, Task Force Z is always a pleasure to read. Writer Matthew Rosenberg is quickly becoming Jace's favorite when it comes to dialogue and both the guys really enjoy the characterization of Deb Donovan and the interesting contrasts that exists between her and Vicki Vale. Writers - Mariko Tamaki & Matthew Rosenberg, Artists - Viktor Bogdanovic, Daniel Henriques & Max Raynor, Color Artists - Jordie Bellaire & Diego Rodriguez, Letterer - Aditya Bidikar & Rob Leigh Icon & Rocket Season 1 #2 - The best thing about a comic when it gets into accurately portraying social issues is for it to feel natural and that is exactly what we see in this issue. As the background of Augustus Freeman is explored and we see the consequences of his actions as Icon affect his present, the subtext of his agency as a person of color is always there. As we are introduced to a potential powerful new threat to Icon and Rocket, the subtext is there. It's fantastic storytelling that makes this story so relevant and grounds it in a realism for present day issues. Plus the artwork is FANTASTIC. Writer - Reginald Hudlin, Penciller - Doug Braithwaite, Inker - Andrew Currie, Color Artist - Brad Anderson, Letterer - Andworld Design Superman Son of Kal-El #2 - Jon Kent attempts to re-establish a secret identity but it falls apart quickly. That leads him to have a very serious conversation with his father about there respective rolls as earth's protectors. What is interesting is how Kal-El sees Jon's role as different than his own, but how does Jon see it and how will the events of this issue affect him going forward. Writer - Tom Taylor, Artist - John Timms, Color Artist - Gabe Eltaeb, Letterer - Dave Sharpe Superman vs Lobo #1 - Lobo takes offense when Superman swoops in and not only helps him save people at an interstellar resort, but gets all the credit for the rescue while Lobo doesn't even get mentioned. This leads the Main Man to come to earth where he plots a rather sophisticated and very meta revenge by attacking Superman on Lex Luthor's recently released social media platform Lexer. It's wild times on this Black Label title. Wonder Woman Black and Gold #3 - Some great stories celebrating Wonder Woman and her different roles throughout her history. A particular highlight is the ESPIONAGE story which hearkens back to the Mike Sekowsky error of Wonder Woman when she was much more spy, than superhero. Writers - Janet Harvey, Robert Venditti, Paula Sevenbergen, Nnedi Okorafor & Aimee Garcia, Artists - Megan Levens, Steve Epting, Inaki Miranda, Jack T. Cole & Sebastian Fiumara, Color Artist - Eva De La Cruz, Letterer - Becca Carey, Andworld Design, Pat Brosseau & Rob Leigh Robin #5 - We see the Bat-family confront Damian about his recent disappearance and what he's been doing while out on his own. There is an especially heartfelt moment between the first Robin, Dick Grayson and the last, Damian himself. How will this affect Damian as the League of Lazarus tournament finally gets underway? Also what is the mysterious book Mother Soul has given so much to acquire? Writer - Joshua Williamson, Artist - Gleb Melnikov, Color Artist - Luis Guerrero, Letterer - Troy Peteri Wonder Woman #778 - The journey continues for Wonder Woman and Siegfried as they travel through both the Phantom Zone & the Fifth Dimension. The guys feel like this story may be starting to drag a little and Janus herself, as an antagonist, may be a little too derivative. If this story sticks the landing maybe all will be forgiven? Hi All, the CBD Crew is back and this time Darci has brought a comic anthology exploring sound through comics to the table for us to discuss. All the contributors for this anthology are from Southern and Southeast Asia so it was a great way to broaden everyone's comic horizons. They talk about each entry but each host had a primary comic they wanted to feature. Brian had The Cat who Barks by Bryan Arfiandy, Carrie had Bonus Points by Benjamin Chee and Darci chose two with Hokken for Beginners by Nicolette Lee and On:Off by Xie Shi Min, Richard Phua, and Xiao Yan. The official Podcast Dog, Jonny, wanted to get in on this whole discussion of sound by providing very audible whines and toy squeaking in the background at points. For this week's Round Table, the group talks about why there is not as many non-English written books translated into English than there should and could be, aside from the main factor of money, of course. Other books discussed this week: Eve #1 (BOOM) by Victor LaValle, Jo Mi-Gyeong, Brittany Peer and AndWorld Design; Out and About #1-3 (Self Published) by Corinne Roberts, and the Medikidz Explain Epilepsy series. Corinne Robert's website and store that includes Out and About can be found here: http://www.corinneroberts.net/. Comics Deserve Better is a weekly podcast hosted by Brian Stafford, Carrie Stafford and Darci Meadville and covers the world of Independent Comics. Mike, Kait, and Nick sat down to discuss our Goodreads Book of the Month: Something Is Killing The Children, Vol. 1 by James Tynion IV, Werther Dell’Edera, Miquel Muerto, and Andworld Design.
Piggybacking on last week’s episode with Marissa Louise where we did a deep dive into coloring, I’ve got another chunk of knowledge for you today with my guest, DC Hopkins. We dig into lettering as a whole, working as part of AndWorld Design, his approach to horror comics, and much more. After reading comics all my life, I love that I can still learn so much about this medium. DC can be found online at his official site, HopkinsLetters.com and on Twitter as @DC_Hopkins. Brian, Darci, and Logan court controversy yet again by discussing the news about the Keanu Reeves/BOOM! Studios KickStarter BRZKR as well as the announcement of the 4 Kids Walk Into the Bank film and the 2020 Ignatz Awards. But the main event of the episode is a discussion of Ryan O'Sullivan and Andrea Mutti's Vault Comics fantasy series Fearscape. Two of our hosts liked this book, but one was definitely drinking the haterade. You'll have to listen to the episode to find out who's who. Finally, other comics mentioned in this episode include Tartarus, Akagami no Shirayukihime, Grendel Kentucky, Ice Cream Man Presents: Quarantine Comix, Seance Tea Party, and Powers: The Best Ever. Ahoyhoy! It's time to get a little ghoulish with the CDB Crew as we cover Night of the Ghoul by Scott Snyder, Francesco Francavilla, and AndWorld Design (Comixology/Best Jacket Press) which was the intrepid Richard's choice. What makes Richard intrepid you may be asking? Well it's because he chooses books like Night of the Ghoul to cover on the pod. So yes, we have entered into a paradox.
