“Snorri's out here gatekeeping the real Norse mythology.” Time to take a journey to Hel, which isn't too far from Midgard! That's fortunate since the dead have to arrange their own transportation. Other topics include actually having the soul of the protagonist's mother before trying to make a deal, Darien leaving the recording not once but twice, directions to Hel, extrapolating cultural meaning from the differences in how souls arrive in the afterlife, Snorri doing his own thing (again), the conflicting requirements for a soul being sent to Hel, how Hel and Hades became Hell, and whether or not the Norse people actual had a goddess with the same name as their icy afterlife. We conclude our Angela & Sera sessions by journeying into the FUNderworld! After two tumultuous mini-series, our Hevenly warriors finally get to spend some time together...jumping through Hela's hoops and the various trials of Hel. If these two lovers must have a climax, Angela: Queen of Hel is the best one for them. The seven-issue storyline subverts expectations and challenges the two Marvelous bounty hunters in ways unimagined after their last two quests together: Angela: Asgard's Assassin and 1602: Witch Hunter Angela. We know they belong together, but do they know they belong together? Yes. No. It's complicated. Every relationship requires each partner to choose the other continually. It's a hard lesson but easily achievable if you follow Angela & Sera's path. Helping us navigate Hel's complicated hold on our romantic heroes is Robin Roberts' Brighter by the Day: Waking Up to New Hopes and Dreams. The Good Morning America host and Women's Basketball Hall of Fame inductee examines her history, filled with regrets and joys, and considers how those piercing moments shaped her present, giving her hope for the future. In this week's episode, Lulu and Pie take a dive into two mythology-infused superhero comics: Angela: Queen of Hel by Marguerite Bennett and Midnighter and Apollo by Steve Orlando. Topics include the way these two comics retell the classic myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, LGBTQ+ representation, demons made of ramen, and monopoly-playing supervillains. Content warnings: discussions of death, slavery, homophobia, and human experimentation You can learn more about Never the Twins Shall Meet at our website.
The tale of Orpheus and Eurydice is one of the great Greek tragedies. This is why we invited alleged comedian Dylan Hunter (he/him) to help keep up the mood during this episode! We discuss human nature, the ship of Theseus (before Vision made it cool), and the importance of choosing your wedding venue carefully. Listen to the cover of the song Why We Build the Wall here. Hello ACC-tion heroes! We have five--yes five!--stories of good and evil to talk about this morning! Each one of our storytellers will be getting a pocket constitution! Thanks to everyone who shared a story OR shared a post. Sergio The story of good defeating evil that I love the most is Angela Queen of Hel. Hella is oppressing angels but the journey is more personal than that. It's a story of love, love between a trans women of color and her beloved lady getting over the evils of Hel itself. It's powerful on so many levels when Angela manages to become the queen of Hel and gets to be free with her love again. Sera and Angela's love combating their own evils, their own fears, and very real threats makes it just such an amazing tale. Aidan Halligan My choice is actually the opening pages of the Saga series, where Marko and Alana overcome the prejudice that has sustained the seemingly eternal war between their people, fall in love and bring new life into the universe. In doing so, they commit a cardinal sin in the eyes of their people but (in a delightfully gritty and 'real' birth sequence) show the triumph of love over learned animosity. As the Pakeha/European half of an inter-racial couple (raising two kids who have to tick a number of 'ethnicity' boxes on census forms) this felt pretty damn real. Given our current political climate, we need more Markos and Alanas out there who are willing to reject the lessons of hatred and embrace. Just embrace. So yeah, that's my choice. Not a triumph as such (given its place at the start of the narrative) but an act of defiance and rebellion that is all the more real because it marries political/personal so brilliantly. Fred Zeleny Lots to choose from, but I was surprisingly touched by the recent issue of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (the latest #1, I think?--pretty sure you’re right, Fred!), where SG meets Brain Drain, realizes something is wrong, and it unexpectedly turns into a tale about growing beyond our past selves and becoming better people over time. Adam Anthony Also, there was this Alan Moore story, I'm not sure where it was originally printed but it tells the story of a Green Lantern (Katma Tui) who had to try to recruit someone to the Lantern Corps whose species has no concept of light. Roger!
Comics too expensive to read, blatant podcast promotion, figure skating to the Spider-man theme song and Siri’s inability to open up are all the topics covered in the second half of the conversation with Danica & Brandon of Variant Edition. We discuss the many different versions of a single comic book character & Brandon tells us a tale of The New 52. Paul challenges Brandon & Danica with a “pick 3” of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Right Stuff and The 100. Danica’s pick for Paul is Letter 44. Brandon’s cross section of Paul’s pick is called Red Wing. The difference between single issues and graphic novels? Danica tells us that single issues like Bitch Planet have really great essays in them, but the collections are missing those and the letters section. Sex Criminals has a hardcover version with a special section on the art process and all the covers of the single issues. Danica tells us that Variant Edition has a mail order service and welcomes listeners to email comics@variantedmonton.com if they’re interested or want recommendations about great comics to read! Brandon posts “The Retailer’s View” over at The Beat. Marvel allows you to subscribe to digital comics, but if you buy a Marvel hard copy you’ll receive a code to get the digital version for free. Danica, and the women shopping at Variant Edition enjoy books by Marguerite Bennett like Angela: Queen of Hel and Insexts. Danica says The Infinite Loop, a time-travel, same-sex romance story has an amazing letters section that will make you tear up. A listener in the chat room wonders if our guests like Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel. Also from the chatroom, Arturo, a former guest on the podcast, asks for suggestions for a good feminist leaning comic for a 12 year old girl. Danica & Brandon suggest Princeless and Lumberjanes. Be sure to find Variant Edition on Twitter, Facebook or their podcast Yegs & Bacon. You can find both guests on twitter, Brandon is @soupytoasterson and Danica is @DanicaHere. You might also like Doctor Whooch, where Danica and Brandon consume alcohol and talk Doctor Who. Thanks for listening! Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon

Episode 12 of The Comic Book Commute Podcast with vmcampos: "Female-Focused." If you're looking for a full, cool, or interesting comic, have you checked out the many female-focused books out there? In this episode I talk about three that I've enjoyed: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (http://amzn.to/1N8FV6j), Angela: Queen of Hel (http://amzn.to/1N8FZD2) and the Mighty Thor (http://amzn.to/1RUbxwJ).
Derek is back at his local shop, Collected Comics and Games in Plano, TX, for the March on-location episode of podcast. (Unfortunately that was no February episode at Collected due to unforeseen circumstances.) While there, he talks with several shop employees and customers about a variety of comics-related matters. Folks spend a lot of time discussing some of the titles they've been reading lately. Matt Kuzio, who usually participates in these shows, was unable to be there this month, but he shared in absentia some of the comics he's been enjoying, including Emma Ríos and Kwei Lim's Mirror (Image Comics), Kate Leth and Brittney Williams'a Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! (Marvel Comics), Chris Lewis and Tony Gregori's Karma Police (Comics Experience), and Sarah Andersen's Adulthood Is a Myth: A Sarah's Scribbles Collection (Andrews McMeel Publishing). Sabrina, the shop manager, talks up some of the preview copies she's been receiving, such as the first issues of Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber's The Fix (Image Comics), Christopher Sebela and Robert Wilson IV, Heartthrob (Oni Press), and Matthew Rosenberg and Tyler Boss's 4 Kids Walk into a Bank (Black Mask Comics). Chris, a regular customer of Collected, discusses his enthusiasm for Angela Queen of Hel (Marvel). And shop employee, Stephanie, mentions Marguerite Bennett and Ariela Kristantina's Insext, although Derek references his less-than-enthusiastic discussion of the title in the recent publisher spotlight on AfterShock Comics. There's also quite a bit of talk over recent comics in TV and film -- such as the new Lucifer series and the second season of Daredevil -- and, on a very special note, everyone there sings the praises of Andy Hirsh, a local artist (and friend of the show) who is also a Collected customer. His series, The Baker Street Peculiars (written by Roger Langridge and published by BOOM! Studios) just began this month, and his new book, Varmints, is due for release this fall from First Second. Needless to say, there's plenty to discuss, and the guys cover a lot of ground this month!

This week’s episode was recorded on January 24th, 2016. This week, Tia Vasiliou, Kate Skocelas, and Mike Rapin chat about comics they read in the past week or so and books they’re excited for this upcoming week (Angela: Queen of Hel #4, Black Magick #4, and Cry Havoc #1) with only a little meandering onto various other topics. Then, for this week’s primary topic, Kate brought up the idea of following up on books you may have dropped and what ever happened to them. The topic diverged from there and was ultimately pretty awesome.
