For those unfamiliar, the Machete Order aims to streamline the viewing experience and to make it more enjoyable; by removing Phantom Menace and watching the films in the following order: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, and Return of the Jedi. But as a treat, we included (and started with) Rogue One.  And so, this show is about the last two films in the order, Revenge of the Sith & Return of the Jedi. These movies feature some of the greatest lightsaber battles of all-time, a few confounding plot holes, Yoda's similarity to Roger Murtaugh from Lethal Weapon, and more.

In honor of the release of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, I'm joined by returning guest Tian Tian Cai to make some curling teams out of our favorite Star Wars characters! We dive deep into the original trilogy and the new Disney films to come up with representative curling squads for both light and dark sides of the force. Also, we mostly ignore the prequels, for reasons that should be obvious. Who should skip the old school light side team? Is Jabba the Hutt capable of curling? What of Porkins and Wedge Antilles, and all the other pilots? And did any of the original characters hold on to their roster spots for the new trilogy? We answer all of these questions and more in this Star Wars BYOC Special!  SHOW NOTES: FiveThirtyEight did indeed do a bit of force projection for the original trilogy, but really only for the Empire. You can see their tidy little graph here (spoiler: losing entire Death Star crews really hurts).  Turns out the Machete Order and the order I recalled are very similar! It's not a bad idea if you want to incorporate the prequels into a marathon watch (or for viewers new to Star Wars). Here's a look at the Machete Order in particular. Apologies for our voices on this one: though we were half a world apart, both Tian Tian and I were recovering from illnesses when we recorded.

Claire is a geomorphologist who studies the evolution of the shape of mountains over time. In the first part, we talk about a bit about the basics of her field and some of the techniques she employs. Paul’s phone confirms he’s been doing this for a while as we hear the lock sound during the show. Advice from a web comic for password security? Put a password following this advice in the link above. Crazy secure, but hard to remember. The idea of Last Pass is to only remember one password. This web service will store all your other passwords so you don’t have to recall them. Prior to Last Pass emerging, Chris purchased 1Password to store passwords. Paul is the Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes so he remembers all his passwords. Speaking of passwords, make sure to enable Two-factor authentication everywhere you can. You can use FreeOTP on Android devices to serve up the authentication codes. Check out the new Cosmos and get your science fix. Chris took in a classic recently, The Maltese Falcon.
