Although this started as a conversation about Gwangju and Professor Don Baker's experiences there starting in 1971, including witnessing the aftermath of the massacre in 1980, we quickly understood there was much more for us to explore. This includes Don's impressions of Kim Dae-jung, gender and women in the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's historical relationship with China, Confucianism and ancestor worship, the effects of Japanese colonization, and the field of Korean Studies more broadly. It was completely spontaneous, but I also noted the following people and their work referenced throughout this conversation, demonstrating the depth and breadth of Don's knowledge: Alexis Dudden, Dave C Kang, Alexander Woodside, Jisoo Kim, Hyaeweol Choi, Carter Eckert, Andre Schmid, Jahyun Kim Haboush, Gregory Henderson, Robert Carlin, Eugene Park, Michael Seth, John Jorgensen, Kim Sun Joo, BR Myers, Bruce Cumings, James Palais, Mark Peterson, John Duncan, Steve Shields, and David Dolinger. Despite knowing the tragedy and violence taking place in Gwangju, Don snuck into the city to find his friends and understand what was really happening. His descriptions of the attacks and murder that took place in Gwangju are heartbreaking to listen to. And through all of this, he nevertheless finishes with words of hope and positivity.    Discussion Outline 0:00 Unpacking Gwangju  6:00 Kim Dae-jung 10:20 1970s Korea 20:50 On Confucianism 24:30 Korean Studies 30:00 The Joseon Dynasty 38:50 Japanese Colonization and Collaboration 51:55 Korean Studies and Factions 1:08:50 Confucianism vs Catholicism (Ancestor Worship) 1:15:30 The Assassination of Park Chung-hee 1979 1:21:40 The Gwangju Massacre 1980 1:47:00 American Involvement in Gwangju 1:55:30 Representations of Gwangju 2:03:46 Conclusions on Life and Korea Dr. Baker's Books A Korean Confucian's Advice on How to Be Moral: Tasan Chŏng Yagyong's Reading of the Zhongyong (University of Hawaii Press, 2023) Catholics and Anti-Catholicism in Chosŏn Korea (University of Hawaii Press) with Franklin Rausch. Despite several clear warnings against Homosexual sin in the Bible, many groups that call themselves religious race to conform to the demands of the LGBT movement. The Catholic Church has resisted. This resistance has earned Catholics the enmity of these so-called activists. These social revolutionaries control most of the media. This combination has sparked a new and very overt form of anti-Catholicism. Two of the three essays in this week's episode concern the recent decision of the Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball Team to make a "Citizen Hero Award" to the blasphemous anti-Catholic group, "The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence." The last of the essays is more philosophical and describes some of the reasons that the left hates the Catholic Church. May 21: Saint Christopher Magallanes, Priest and Martyr, and Companions, Martyrs Fr. Magallanes: 1869–1927; 22 priests and 3 laymen: 1915-1937, the majority killed between 1926-1929 Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: Red A Mexican bloodletting The governor of Mexico's Tabasco state in the 1920s, Garrido Canabal, was so insanely anti-Catholic that he named his three sons Lenin, Satan, and Lucifer. He was also a farmer and named one of his bulls “God,” a hog “Pope,” a cow “Mary,” and a donkey “Christ.” He ordered the removal and destruction of all crucifixes from public buildings and graveyards in Tabasco. Painful photographs of the destruction prove that it happened. For his vicious persecution of the Church, he was elevated to a national cabinet position in the 1930s. Canabal was a political protégé of the Mexican president, and later strongman, Plutarco Calles. Calles was an illegitimate child, born to unmarried parents. Calles hated being called an illegitimate child and especially resented the Roman Catholic Church for this title of illegitimacy. In time, Calles became a devout believer in the religion of atheism, eagerly shared his beliefs with others, and put great energy into evangelizing others to his side. As governor of the state of Sonora, he expelled all Catholic priests. As president of Mexico, he carried out an overtly violent, ferocious, scorched-earth attack on Catholicism without par in the twentieth century. Priests were killed for no other reason than for being priests. This led to a popular counterreaction known as the Cristero War, a slow burn of assassinations, pitched battles, skirmishes, and reprisals. Central Mexico was in a full-blown meltdown in the 1920s. For a visitor to Mexico today, or to anyone familiar with its culture, such events are difficult to imagine or comprehend. Mexico harbors one of the most vibrant Catholic cultures in the entire world, thick with devotions, processions, Masses, feast day celebrations, and religious song and dress. Yet the Cristero War did happen, and not a thousand years ago. The militant, anti-religious mentality of Anglo-Saxon secular humanism is familiar to many believers today. It is the air we breath. This educated secularism opposes the very idea of God, exalts a narrow understanding of freedom, denigrates the concept of belief, and transposes science as an object of faith rather than a formal creed. The militant anti-religious mentality of 1920s Mexico, and of other culturally Catholic nations, was and is different from Anglo-Saxon secularism. Anti-Catholicism in Catholic nations expresses itself in anticlericalism. Hatred is unleashed against bishops and priests and their instruments of ministry—altars, crucifixes, vestments, rosaries, statues, etc.—not so much against creeds or ideas. You don't need to read Nietzsche or to master the Enlightenment canon to hate the Church. Whereas Anglo Saxon secularism wages its battles in the higher echelons of university classrooms and the courts, Latino anticlericalism is not too complex. Just kidnap a priest, blindfold him, tie his hands tightly behind his back, and shoot him in the head. Anticlericalism liquidates its enemies against the dirty brick wall behind the local police station. No courtrooms are needed. Today's saint, and the others canonized with him, were caught in the storm that was Plutarco Calles. Father Magallanes was a priest of humble origins similar to those of Calles, but Magallanes walked a different path than the strongman. After working the land as a youth for his poor family, he entered the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1899. He then served faithfully as a chaplain and as a pastor to the Huichole Indians for many years. By middle age, he was a priest of some stature. But the otherwise ordinary arc of his life took an extraordinary turn when, on May 21, 1927, he was on his way to celebrate the Feast of St. Rita of Cascia (May 22) in a small village. A shootout between Cristeros and Federal forces near the village led to Father Magallanes' arrest, along with a brother priest, Father Caloca. There were no accusations and no trial. There was neither the presentation of evidence nor the right of defense, since priests had no civil rights in Mexico at the time. On May 25, 1927, the two priests were led to the courtyard of a municipal building for what always happened next. Father Magallanes stated: “I am innocent and die innocent. I absolve with all my heart those who seek my death and ask God that my blood bring peace to a divided Mexico.” The priests absolved each other, spoke some few words of comfort, and then were shot to death by a firing squad of fellow Mexicans in soldiers' uniforms. Father Caloca's last words were: “For God we lived and for Him we die.” Twenty-five martyrs are commemorated today. All were diocesan priests, except for three laymen who died with their parish priest. They died in eight different Mexican states under circumstances similar to those of Frs. Magallanes and Caloca. One was hung from a mango tree in a town square, another from an oak in the country; one was shot for not revealing the confessions of his co-prisoners, one was bayoneted and beaten to death; one was shot and his body placed on railroad tracks to be mutilated by a train. The executioner of one priest refused to fire his rifle. He was shot right after the priest. Pope Saint John Paul II beatified the group in 1992 and canonized them in 2000. In addition to Frs. Magallanes (Cristóbal Magallanes Jara) and Caloca (Agustín Caloca Cortés), these martyrs were: Román Adame Rosales, Rodrigo Aguilar Alemán, Julio Álvarez Mendoza, Luis Batis Sáinz, Mateo Correa Magallanes, Atilano Cruz Alvarado, Miguel De La Mora, Pedro Esqueda Ramírez, Margarito Flores Garcia, José Isabel Flores Varela, David Galván Bermúdez, Salvador Lara Puente (layman), Pedro de Jesús Maldonado Lucero, Jesús Méndez Montoya, Manuel Morales (layman), Justino Orona Madrigal, Sabás Reyes Salazar, José María Robles Hurtado, David Roldán Lara (layman),Toribio Romo González, Jenaro Sánchez Delgadillo, David Uribe Velasco, and Tranquilino Ubiarco Robles. Father Magallanes, your quiet witness and noble death are an inspiration to all who suffer physical violence for the faith in unknown ways and in unknown places. May your intercession and courage be an inspiration for all priests, laymen, and religious who are tempted to bend in the winds of persecution.

“Nothing can do men of good will more harm than apparent compromises with parties (political) that subscribe to anti–moral and anti–Democratic and anti-God forces. We must have the courage to detach our support from men (and women) who are doing evil. We must bear them no hatred, but we must break with them.”The straightforward, uncompromising words of former Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, no longer among us. Archbishop Sheen had his own television program some decades ago. It was avidly watched by Catholics and indeed some non–Catholics as well. Sheen was powerful, straightforward, deeply concerned with right and truth and a real champion of the Roman Catholic Church. This powerful institution, not really what it once was, needs more men, more leaders, men and women for that matter to truly champion the truth, the right and all things moral. It, like all religious institutions, needs men and women like Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Here his profound and straightforward words again:“Nothing can do men (and women) of good will more harm than apparent compromises with parties (political) that subscribe to anti–moral and anti–Democratic and anti–God forces.”Sheen was deeply concerned with compromise. If there is truth, absolute truth, it can NOT be compromised. It is what it is, it speaks for itself, it cannot be interpreted and it must be fully observed and respected. And if, said Archbishop Sheen, there comes a political party which “subscribes” to anti–moral, anti–Democratic and anti–God forces, all Roman Catholics, and in fact all people of faith:         “MUST BREAK WITH THEM.”And there has come that time, that party in our beloved America. It is here, and it is now. They are the progressives, the radicals, the anti–Americans who continue to call themselves:         THE DEMOCRAT PARTY.Former Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Baines Johnson and Jimmy Carter among others would be stunned, shocked and disengaged from the conduct, beliefs, platforms and promises of the current Democrat party. That led one Catholic political pundit to state:          “This (the Democrats) is no longer your daddy's democratic party.”And is that ever an understatement. It is nothing at all, absolutely nothing like the pro American Democrats of old. Anti–Catholicism existed at the very beginning of the immigration of Catholics to America in the early 1800s. There was, to be sure and unfortunately so, considerable bias against them. Not as people are human beings, but because they were Roman Catholic. Prejudice was everywhere. But, through the decades, it ameliorated and although there were always differences between Protestant and Catholic, and of course people of other religions and faiths, and there are today, a gentle tolerance replaced hostility and animosity and those differences were confronted peacefully, with discourse and dialogue, with charitable conduct and not, NOT with hostility or political attacks. And then came Obama in 2008. Barack Hussein Obama and Joe Biden (remember him?) came to power in 2008 following the lazy years of the George W. Bush Administration with influence and control over the House and Senate, Obamacare, THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT was passed and became the law, the medical law of our great country. Many think and many more know that this law as implemented was an absolute disaster and continues to be so. But the law and its nefarious provisions were aggressively implemented by Obama and company and no matter the effect, forced upon all Americans. It was supported by political untruths (if you like your present medical coverage, you can keep it) and implemented by those who were anti–capitalist and most importantly, anti–religion. They cared little or nothing about the First Amendment and the so called first freedom:         FREEDOM OF RELIGION!Obamacare mandated that employers provide contraceptives to their employees as part of medical insurance. Abortive fasciant – contraceptives were required and the right of all employees who wished to take advantage of them, so said Obama and company. The rules for such were developed by the Departments for Health and Human Services, the Labor Department and the Treasury Department. Contraceptives were required free of charge and abortion–causing drugs were fully legal and to be paid for by insurance. Many millions objected but few if any stood up. EXCEPT, of all things Catholic Nuns. These nuns were known as:         THE LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR SAINTS PETER AND PAUL HOMEin Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When Pennsylvania tried to force these sweet little ladies, as Joe Biden calls them, to provide contraceptives and abortive fasciants to their employees, the nuns objected and refused, God bless them. They sued the once great state of Pennsylvania. They got to the Supreme Court, which took their case, the landmark case known as:LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR SAINTS PETER AND PAUL HOME v. PENNSYLVANIAThe fight was on for morality, freedom and all things pro Christian. The plaintiff LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR are a group of Catholic nuns who sacrifice all worldly possessions to care for the sick and elderly. This uncompromising Catholic group, began their fight with the government in 2011 when the Affordable Care Act required employees to cover all FDA approved contraceptives in their PRIVATE health plans. Religious groups like THE LITTLE SISTERS were not exempted even as churches were. The Sisters asked the U.S. Supreme Court to respect their right to moral and religious freedom. Again, the Supreme Court took the case. The case was heard in its own right and also as a result of the Trump Administration putting forth regulations in 2017 and 2018 which expanded EXEMPTIONS for employers with good faith objections, religious and moral based objections, founded upon the First Amendment to furnishing and paying for all such. Ministers had been exempt but not other legitimate organizations which had sincerely held moral or religious objections to the Obamacare abortive fasciant – contraceptive mandate. Now, they were under the new Trump Administration regulations. Both the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey objected and aggressively entered in to the litigation, defending their objections that no such exemption was legal or constitutional. Then came the decision from the nine Supreme Court Justices. Seven Justices, joining in an opinion by Justice Clarence Thomas and others, ruled that the exemptions for religious organizations and for businesses with “SINCERE MORAL” objections were in fact exempted from the mandate and could not be forced to provide the coverage required by the Affordable Care Act. With the liberal–skewing current bent of the Supreme Court, it is indeed amazing or perhaps even divinely inspired that the Court came to this conclusion and with such a large majority. Normally predictable liberal-skewing Justices Kagan and Breyer sided with the five other so called Justices Roberts, Thomas, Alito, Kavanaugh and Gorsuch in favor of this exemption for religious organizations and for businesses with “sincere moral objections.” There are two liberal, ultra–liberal Supreme Court Justices who vote virtually 100% of the time for radical liberal results in virtually every case, namely Justices Ginsburg and Sotomayor. They often appear on record as crusaders rather than jurists. They were completely against the opinion, really the opinions of the majority seven. But the LITTLE SISTERS won, a major victory for these sweet little ladies (Biden) who really had more muscle and political clout than old Joe realized. All of us, and all organizations, and all businesses who hold these SINCERE MORAL BELIEFS should be absolutely delighted with the results and we should thank these Catholic Nuns and those who represent them for pursuing this legal victory since 2011 (9 long years), at least for now. If Biden wins the presidency and the Democrats win House and Senate, you can be certain that this exemption will be done away with either by legislation or executive order and back they go, these LITTLE SISTERS to court. The hostility on the part of DEMOCRATS for anything religious, for any beliefs or convictions sincerely and morally held is palpable and will become the full law of the land as the Democrats will. It is hard to believe that any person of faith, especially Catholic, could vote for the Democrats knowing what they stand for and what they feel about and will do to anything RELIGIOUS. These are scary times. If you like we believe in the Constitution and the freedoms of the First Amendment including and especially Freedom of Religion, you should be deeply concerned should the Democrats win. But there is a matter of six weeks to make sure that doesn't happen and to abide by the pungent and poignant words of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen referring to anti–moral and anti–God parties and politicians, like modern day Democrats:         “WE MUST BREAK WITH THEM!”And we must break with these modern–day Democrats if we wish to preserve our First Amendment rights to Freedom of Religion. WE MUST!Today, the Catholics. Tomorrow, Evangelicals, and Jews, and perhaps finally Muslims although they would be last, and then all people of faith. It is the avowed goal of Democrats to excise religion from the public square, out of politics and out of power. It is happening and it will continue to happen, of that you can be sure. So I say to you my fellow Americans, my fellow Christians, and all people of faith, you cannot and you should not vote:         DEMOCRAT.That of course is a blunt, aggressive, highly opinionated point of view but one which I believe to be extremely accurate, based on current fact, and an understanding of what the democratic party platform will yield and what its aggressive, anti–constitutional politicians and leaders will do if in power, and especially FULL POWER. It would be the end, THE END my fellow Americans of the freedoms we have enjoyed for 240 years and so often taken for granted. THE END!So I reiterate the words of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen with which I most fully agree describing without knowing the current Democrat Party 2020:         WE (THE PEOPLE OF FAITH) MUST BREAK WITH THEM!That means don't vote for them. That means keep them out of power and let them do no further harm to our Constitution and our religious way of life. For, under their control and power, those freedoms will be lost, and once lost:         GONE FOREVER!

According to Udi Greenberg, many anti-Communist commentators in the early stages of the Cold War resurrected anti-Catholic tropes that had been deployed in the nineteenth century. Redirecting and adapting those tropes, Greenberg argues, played a crucial role in the effort to portray and vilify the Communist project. Shortly after the introduction of Catholicism into Korea in the late 18th century, Korea's Confucian government began to persecute Catholics. Why would a Confucian government torture and kill the people it was supposed to protect and nurture? Why would Koreans turn to a religion that differed fundamentally from the established norms of their country, particularly when following that religion could lead to their deaths? Dr. Don Baker, in his book Catholics and Anti-Catholicism in Chosŏn Korea (University of Hawaiʼi Press, 2017, with Franklin Rausch) answers these questions, both through his own words and through translations of works by a leading Catholic who died a martyr and a Confucian scholar who criticized Catholicism. In this meticulously researched, annotated, and refreshingly clear work, Baker reveals the perspectives of both sides in an easy to understand fashion, making this book suitable both for scholars and for a text in undergraduate or graduate classes. Church Militant The Vortex Feed

TRANSCRIPT Church Militant (a 501(c)4 corporation) is responsible for the content of this commentary. The world of politics is the arena in which the culture and the Church are now colliding head-on in a war for the ages. It's taken a man like Trump to actually set the stage for this epic battle, to set the table for everything to come together. For example, in a stunning admission this past weekend, in light of the announcement of Catholic Amy Coney Barrett by Trump to the Supreme Court, New York Times columnist Elizabeth Bruenig just flat out said, "Judge Barrett's nomination has merely renewed attention to a fundamental conflict, centuries underway, between Catholicism and the American ethos." Well, at least Bruenig has the decency to be upfront about her anti-Catholic bigotry. Most of her Marxist-minded allies do not. But more and more of them are beginning to speak of actual Catholics as some sort of pariahs, speaking of us in terms of the enemies of the State. It's not been that long in this country since Catholics were treated as the enemy. It was really only in the wake of World War II where Catholic servicemen fought alongside millions of their non-Catholic American brothers-in-arms that we caught a break. Ten years later, Abp. Fulton Sheen was dominating the airwaves, speaking of Catholic majesty and truth and virtue. His Life Is Worth Living television show was the number-one-rated show when it aired from 1952 till 1956. He even won the Emmy award for "Most Outstanding Television Personality" in the show's first year. Sheen — American born and Catholic formed — was a strident patriot and a zealous anti-communist. He often railed against the evil of Marxism, even famously saying of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin on the air, "Stalin must one day meet his judgment." The next week, Stalin hit the floor, dead from a stroke. America has Marxist creep. Of course, this was all nearly 70 years ago, and a lot has changed in America since then. America has Marxist creep. It has become this way because the American experiment is based on the foundation of a virtuous people. Once virtue leaves the room, chaos sets in. Sheen never had to talk about widespread ills of our society — fatherless children, shattered families, an acceptance of homosexuality, abortion as the most common surgical procedure performed in the country. It was precisely to prevent evils like this that Sheen preached to begin with. Yet here we are, a nation sunk so low that many are questioning, "Is America on life support; is this its demise?" Despite this past weekend's prayer rally organized by Frankin Graham (with a conspicuous absence of Catholic bishops, incidentally) the large gathering of thousands does not mask that America has traded vice for virtue. Little by little, each election cycle, fewer believers vote, ultimately because there are simply fewer believers to vote. The scales are at the tipping point, and soon, barring some action by Heaven, they will complete their tilt toward godlessness, enshrining immorality into law and eviscerating any opposition to that what Bruening calls "the American ethos." What has happened though is that what she describes as the American ethos is little else than a sophisticated way to speak of Marxism. Her American ethos is as far from the actual American ethos as James Martin's version of Catholicism is from actual Catholicism — which is to say light-years away. Anti-Catholicism will soon become etched into that new ethos if the Marxists win this election. In some ways, in fact, it already has. President Trump had to actually come out this past weekend and address the entire topic of anti-Catholicism. Now the last battle is being waged in the arena of politics. A win here for the Marxists means it's over. Time will be all there is standing between faithful Catholics and those who want to destroy them. Consider, almost a hundred Catholic parishes or shrines around the nation have been vandalized this year. Faithful Catholics have been insulted, spit on at pro-life prayer sessions and vilified in the media for defending Catholic teachings. This will not go away if Biden wins. It will increase — it will, in fact, come to be blessed by the State (for how else should an enemy of the State be treated?). The Church had been neatly prepared to be offered up to the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s. The case could be made — strongly — that 70 years ago, America was on the verge of becoming Catholic. But that was not to happen. Many of the religious orders — even back then — had already been penetrated (as well as Catholic colleges and universities). The seminaries were beginning to stink of subtle heresy. The Church had been neatly prepared to be offered up to the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s. By that time, enough of the hierarchy had become corrupt — doctrinally, liturgically, financially or sexually, or in some cases, all of the above. A giant structure of the Church in America had been constructed in those first hundred or so years, and it would take a number of generations to dismantle it. But over the decades, dismantle it they did — the enemies of Christ inside the Church we're speaking of. Their champion is Joe Biden; he is the very model of everything the current American ethos is about. And he is the very model at the same time of all that fraudulent Catholicism is about. He is the son of the fraudulent Church of Nice, and those in his entourage would turn around and smash the authentic Church to pieces. Understand, Catholics who actually believe, understand everything that is at stake here.
