In this episode we discuss Jörg Frey's book "Qumran, Early Judaism, and New Testament Interpretation." In it he perpetuates a diabolical form of interpreting the New Testament by using Anti-Jewish tropes instead of a careful examination of the texts, as he proclaims the following: "Dualistic concepts are rather used to qualify the enemies of the communities, the Roman power as well as the synagogue (Rev 2:9; 3:9), the Jews, and also deviant or “heretic” Christians. Thus 1 and 2 John explicitly draw on the concept of an “antichrist,” and label the deviant teachers as “antichrist(s)” (2 John 7; cf. 1 John 2:18; 4:3) pp.322-324. Claiming that all of this is part of "Jewish apocalypticism” he thinks he can get away with pilling other Jews among the enemies of the new Israel (church/followers of Jesus) without taking into consideration that Jewish-Christians at that time were being persecuted by either other Jews who were aligned with Rome, religious leaders who found their teachings objectionable or Roman authorities who saw them as a threat to world peace. Mr. Frey calls "the synagogue" or "the Jews" the enemies of Christianity showing his inherent bias and Judeophobia which as we show on our program he attempts to attribute to Jesus (Jewish) Movement.Mystic-Skeptic Media produces podcasts such as Uncensored Radio Show, Raiders of the Unknown and Jesus The Israelite. It's finally here... Today, we turn to the Gospel According to Andrew Lloyd Webber: the phenomenon that is Jesus Christ Superstar (1970)!   We talk about: – The context of the late 60s/early 70s that gave rise to a rock opera treatment of the Jesus story – The eroticism in Mary Magdalene's (and maybe Judas'?) relationship with Jesus and the question of how sexuality & love intersect in the Christian tradition. What does it mean to fall in love with a God with a human body? – Mary Magdalene (not a prostitute in the Bible!) and the way the musical treats her as a woman, a sex worker, and a romantic lead. – Anti-Judaism and Anti-Semitism in Jesus Christ Superstar and in the New Testament and what responsibility Christians bear in challenging it. – What kind of Christology (big fancy theological word for “understanding Jesus”) undergirds Jesus Christ Superstar, and whether there's any good news in this musical.   You'll hear: – Ian Gillan, Murray Head, Yvonne Elliman and the cast of the Original Studio Recording (a.k.a. “The Brown Album”) from 1970. – "Could Ye Not Watch With Me One Hour?" from John Stainer's Crucifixion sung by the St. Michael Singers (Fox Records, 2009). – Joshua Mostel singing "Herod's Song" from the 1973 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.   Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt!

In the wake of a recent surge of antisemitism, we talk to historian David Nirenberg about what connects the hatred of Jews in the past and present. Anti-Judaism is more than simply a form of prejudice against a particular ethnicity. Rather, it is a foundational and essential idea in Western civilization which provides cultures with a way of thinking about the dangers of the world. As we connect the dots between past and present, how does thinking in the longue durée help us to move forward? And can an understanding of history lead us towards a better future?  David Nirenberg, a distinguished historian of medieval Europe and the Mediterranean, is Director and Leon Levy Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University.

E o conhecido cientista bíblico Julius Wellhausen (1844-1918), para muitos, seria igualmente suspeito. In this episode of our Anti-Judaism series we turn to discuss the nature and purpose of Israel's election. Specifically, we discuss how this may have been understood by the Apostle Paul relative to the kinds of understandings that we find in the Hebrew Bible. Joining us for this conversation we have Dr. Joel Kaminsky, who is Morningstar Professor of Jewish Studies and Professor of Religion at Smith College, and Dr. Mark Reasoner, who is Professor of Biblical Theology at Marian University. The two of them co-wrote an article that situates their understanding of these matters in contrast to the position of Prof. N. T. Wright. Our discussion largely centers on the arguments that they make in their article, which is entitled, “The Meaning and Telos of Israel's Election: An Interfaith Response to N.T. Wright's Reading of Paul,” which was published in journal Harvard Theological Reviewin 2019 (Volume 112, Issue 4). The reality of historic Christian ant-Judaism and anti-Semitism cannot be ignored or dismissed though it often is. As difficult as it is for most sincere Christians to acknowledge, elements of Christianity have generated and spread hatred of Jews. This is not a matter of personal opinion. It's something that academics, Jewish historians, and most importantly Christian historians and theologians have documented and admitted to their credit. Many Christians desire to rectify this great injustice. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/juan-marcos-gutierrez0/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/juan-marcos-gutierrez0/support

In this episode we kick off our brand-new series on Christian Anti-Judaism. Here we introduce the key topics of the conversation, and provide some context for why we regard this conversation as an ethical imperative for Christians, since our collective history is steeped in anti-Judaism. Along the way, we define some of the key terms, including anti-Judaism, which we distinguish from anti-Semitism as being more focused on essentialist religious ideas than strictly ethnic categories (even though there is a lot of overlap at times), supersessionism, which is the idea that the Church replaces Israel, and philo-Judaism, which can be a form of anti-Judaism that is characterized by cultural appropriation. We hope that this introductory episode helps to set up the conversation that will unfold with our special guests, including both Christians and Jews, over the next several weeks. In this awesome presentation Dr. Jacob Lackner explains Medieval Antisemitism and the differences between it and Anti-Judaism, we will begin n Antiquity and then expand to explain events, laws, movements and negative stereotypes in the Middle Ages. In this lecture we see how in many ways Medieval Antisemitism provided the foundation for future acts of antisemitism and in many cases we will also see a parallel with dark periods in our history such as the 20th Century and the Third Reich. Dr. Lackner is the first expert that I have hosted on the show and I was very thankful that he chose to dedicate his time to us so he could teach us about subjects involving the eras that we all love. Lately, she's been a really loud Jew. Will her music people remain interested when Judaism is the topic? Will the massive influx of new followers via Judaism read her music writing? Can she be a music journalist who is also an activist around Judaism? What about Zionism? What about the conversation around Israel as a state? Antisemitism? Anti-Judaism? Anti-Israel? Anti-Zionism? Where does racism come into play? What about intersectionality? Right and left? Right and wrong? Shortly after George Floyd was killed, I spoke out that this was not a moment for Jews to make any noise, that this was a moment specifically about oppression against people with black skin. Eve and others like her friend @benmfreeman made me come to the opinion that that rhetoric was repeated often enough and spun enough to create a real moment of Antisemitism. We get into it. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/teawithsg/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/teawithsg/support

In this episode, I talk with Amy-Jill Levine, a Jewish New Testament scholar, about this Good-Jesus / Bad-Judaism binary, and other us-versus-them mentalities in public life. Rather than demonize those who are different from us, Amy-Jill encourages conversation and embracing genuine curiosity about their side of the story. His presentation on December 9 will center on Bach's Magnificat, to be performed as part of the All Souls Christmas Eve services this year, and how its musical setting helps to interpret the great Canticle of Mary, the expecting mother as she prepares herself for the birth of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. Michael Marissen is the Daniel Underhill Professor of Music Emeritus at Swarthmore College, and has also served as a visiting professor on the graduate faculties at Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania. His many books include The Social and Religious Designs of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos (Princeton, 1995), Lutheranism, Anti-Judaism and Bach's St. John Passion (Oxford, 1998), Tainted Glory in Handel's Messiah (Yale, 2014), and Bach and God (Oxford, 2016). In this week’s show we are honored to have back on the program Dr. Bejarano Gutierrez, a graduate from Siegal College and Spertus Institute of Jewish Learning and Leadership. Our topic is Reclaiming St. James: A Jewish perspective on Jacob brother of Jesus. In the past three decades many books have been written about this enigmatic figure and we are still at a loss to understand a complete picture of his person. There is even less historical data on James that there is on Jesus; however he is a crucial character in the saga of Jewish Christianity, early Christian tradition and the bridge between the many Second Temple Judaisms and Rabbinic Judaism as it is known today. According to the Jewish historian Josephus, who joined the ranks of the Roman Empire after leading charge against them in the first century: “And so he convened the judges of the Sanhedrin, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, the one called Christ, whose name was James, and certain others, and accusing them of having transgressed the law delivered them up to be stoned. Those of the inhabits of the city who were considered the most fair-minded and who were strict in observance of the law were offended at this…” Antiquities 20. 9.1 199-203 Another enigmatic figure we discussed is John The Immerser or as he is known in the West as John the baptizer. We explore if he was influenced by the Essenes, as many people claim and how the information available about him can help us learn more about the person of James.

In this week's episode we discuss the Christian roots of Anti-Semitism and what history and archeology can tell us about the original Jesus movement. The show comprised of two interviews. One with Amy-Jill Levine, University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University and the other with Israel Knohl, the Yehezkel Kaufmann Chair of Biblical studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Amy-Jill Levine’s discusses her book The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus and the historical framework of the writing of the New Testament. She shares alternatives for interfaith relations. Israel Knohl discusses his book Messiahs and Resurrection in ‘The Gabriel Revelation’. Which focuses on his research on the Gabriel Tablet, an ancient document believed to support Knohl’s theory. He believes that a group of surviving followers of a ‘messianic king’ wrote the document to make sense of their loss, just like Jesus’ disciples. Historically, an Anti-Jewish bias from people claiming to follow the teachings of the Jewish preacher from Nazareth, has caused much prejudice and persecution. To heal the hearts of those affected by this, we must seek to understand the roots of these sentiments to gain insights on how not to perpetuate this conflict.

In the fourth century, when the organized Church decided to divorce herself from her spiritual mother, Judaism, she unwittingly planted the seeds of anti-Judaism. Anti-Judaism is not to be confused with Anti-Semitism. The former is the dislike or disinterest of Jewishness and Judaism specifically; the latter is the dislike or disinterest in the Semitic race altogether. By the way, both fall into the category of violating the verse in examination and both are disrespectful to Father Avram and displeasing to HaShem! Over the centuries, this seedbed has blossomed into a full-grown weed called Replacement Theology. This heretical belief fosters the mistaken idea that “God gave up on the Jews when they corporately rejected his Son Yeshua, and instead, adopted the newborn Gentile Church as his chosen people. The unfortunate Jews were left to face the curses of the Torah, and the Wrath of an angry Father, while the Church inherited (spiritually of course) most of the blessings and promises to the Jews, as pronounced in the Torah.” Fortunately, this theological framework is neither blatantly taught to Christians, openly favored by the same, nor endorsed by HaShem!
