Finding Brave
307: Visibility Starts with Recognizing Your Value

Finding Brave

What if the key to career growth isn't doing more but recognizing what you've already achieved? Today on Finding Brave, we're joined by inspiring author and career coach Octavia Goredema to discover how true visibility begins with valuing yourself. Octavia is the CEO of Fire Memos, a passionate advocate for helping people unlock their full potential at work, the author of PREP, PUSH, PIVOT, and host of two Audible Originals, Brand Yourself for Success and How to Change Careers. Previously featured on Finding Brave (check out Episode 248!), she returns to share new insights on personal branding, professional visibility, and why it's more important than ever to own your worth and leverage more fully your amazing talents, abilities and experiences. In this episode, you'll learn why great work alone isn't enough to stand out in today's competitive job market and how many high performers remain invisible despite their incredible contributions. We also unpack the connection between visibility and self-recognition and how naming your strengths and tracking your accomplishments form the foundation of a strong personal brand. Octavia also offers empowering tips on embracing personal branding without feeling “cringy,” even for those who avoid the spotlight, and shares the traits that define her own brand. (And the fascinating responses Octavia offered in answer to my impromptu question her own brand were very enlightening!). Want to learn how to build a memorable personal brand that embodies who you truly are? Tune in today!   Key Highlights From This Episode: Why visibility begins with self-recognition (and why so many people struggle with this). [04:55] How naming your strengths, even the most obvious ones, is key to owning your worth. [08:43] Using discomfort as a diagnostic tool to guide your next steps and fuel growth. [17:23] The power of sharing your struggles: it might be the inspiration someone else needs! [21:45] Embracing authenticity and aligning your brand with who you truly are. [25:21] Tips for identifying the key traits of your personal brand and building a presence for it. [27:41] Redefining success by how you honor your own progress, not others' opinions of it. Into the Madness is a new Audible Original from Trevor Aaronson and Western Sound. On July 4, 2022, a shooter climbed onto a rooftop in Highland Park, Illinois, and opened fire on a Fourth of July parade below, killing seven people and wounding dozens more. Prosecutors charged Robert “Bobby” Crimo III with the mass shooting. But this attack was part of something even more insidious. Bobby had created an elaborate game—complete with cryptic videos, a book of numbers, and an eerie online presence—designed to seed a conspiracy theory about the massacre. Into the Madness is a deep dive into the events leading up to the mass shooting and the story of a woman who became a confidant to Crimo and the final player in his game. Drawing from dozens of interviews and more than 48 hours of recorded calls with Bobby, investigative journalist Trevor Aaronson tells a story that will challenge everything you think you know about mass shootings, conspiracy theories, and the fragile boundary between reality and illusion. The series explores the rise of nihilistic violence, the role of technology in fostering extremism, and America’s collective descent into conspiracy thinking. Into the Madness will leave you questioning where the truth ends—and the madness begins. Into the Madness is an Audible Original, produced by Trevor Aaronson and Western Sound. When researchers found that providing stimulants to hyperactive children improved their behavior in school, educators, pediatricians, and drug manufacturers helped build interest in identifying and treating a new condition: Attention Deficit Disorder. The Gut Feeling Is the Way: How to Complete An Arc and Pivot Into the New w/ Jesse Israel

Be. Play. Love.

In life, relationships and business, big pivots are preceded by an internal pull towards something new. Your intuition is telling you it's time to complete a cycle and follow the surge of expansion into the unknown. There's an inner knowing that it's time to leap into what's next. This creates a rollercoaster of emotions - on one hand, you feel the peace and clarity that comes with honoring yourself. On the other hand, you have to deal with the fall out of parting ways with something you've been doing. Here's the thing: the back and forth, the doubt, the tears and the joy and expansion are all part of the pivot. In order to complete the arc and land gently in the new thing, we have to honor the messiness. We have to let the cycle complete organically. This was the journey Jesse Israel found himself on. On two occasions, he's felt that inner pull to something new, and as scary as it was, he honored it. How did tapping into his intuition trigger a transition? How do we move through a transition by letting intuition lead the way? In this episode, the meditation leader, speaker, leadership coach and founder of The Big Quiet tells us what the process of pivoting was like, and how he was able to move through it with grace. There's so much power and potency in honoring that intuition. The wavering and back and forth was so necessary because it helped me understand even more why the gut is the way. -Jesse Israel   Things You'll Learn In This Episode   -Make your inner knowing louder than external pressure Very often, pivots push us in the opposite direction of what we've been doing for years. How do we lean into our intuitive calling to transition when the external world is [loudly] telling us to stay where we are?   -The turmoil (and triumph) of transitions Pivots bring up doubt and we constantly go back and forth on the decision, even when we know it's right. How do we cultivate trust and find joy in the not knowing and emotional ups and downs?   -Let the cycle end organically Completing cycles is really hard - so hard in fact, that people tend to resist the change. Why does this only lead to more pain and difficulty?   Guest Bio   Jesse is a meditation leader, keynote speaker and leadership coach known for founding the mass meditation movement The Big Quiet. Named "The Meditation Expert" by The New York Times, Jesse has led some of the largest meditations on earth — having toured arenas with Oprah Winfrey and co-hosted international broadcasts with Deepak Chopra. As you're about to discover, we're doing something a little different on our channel today. We've been looking for ways to highlight and promote shows across the Writer's Bone universe and don't you know it, we've got a passionate, informed, and engaged audience right here on our airwaves, why not share stand out episodes like the one you're about to hear. Daniel Paisner has been on quite the heater on his show As Told To: The Ghostwriting Podcast. The conceit of his show is talking to ghosts like him about how they got into this kind of work, how they interact with their well known clients, what material they produce from their own imaginations, and how one goes about building a writing life in service of someone else's voice. He's talked to the likes of Michelle Burford, Frank Santopadre, Seth Davis, Amy Ephron, Jodi Lipper, Jon Sternfeld, and the granddaddy of ghostwriters William Novak. Almost a year ago, Daniel called us and said that he was in talks with Jeff Daniels to appear on the show to discuss his audible original “Alive and Well Enough.” And as an added wrinkle, this all happened during the writers' strike in Hollywood, so we couldn't do a deep dive into his oeuvre, which actually led to a more intimate, in-depth conversation. Please enjoy this conversation that originally aired Oct. 10, 2023. Also subscribe to As Told To and continue the conversation with us.  Note: This episode of As Told To: The Ghostwriting Podcast features narrative and song excerpts from Jeff Daniels's audio memoir “Alive and Well Enough,” presented courtesy of Audible Originals. Welcome to Episode 214! This episode contains a lot of biblio adventuring. Emily is in Traverse City, Michigan, helping her daughter, getting to know her new granddaughter, and discovering the many excellent Little Free Libraries in the area. She also shopped at Horizon Books and has been spending time at the Traverse City Library. Meanwhile, back in New England, Chris and “Colleen from Chicago” hit the road for a four-day Biblio Adventure Extravaganza that included Melville's Arrowhead, Wharton's The Mount, Emily Dickinson's family homes, The Homestead and The Evergreens, Amherst Books, and The Yiddish Book Center. The former bookstore coworkers capped it off with the annual Moby Dick marathon aboard the Charles W. Morgan at Mystic Seaport Museum. Oh, and she forgot to mention that they also went to the Odyssey Bookstore at Mount Holyoke. Phew, what a blast! We managed to finish a few books, too: Emily loved THE SNOW CHILD by Eowyn Ivey and appreciated its cold Alaska setting while reading in the heat of Michigan's summer. She listened to the audiobook version of Ann Napolitano's first novel, WITHIN ARM'S REACH, which features six narrators, and then two Audible Original short stories by Alice Hoffman, "The Bookstore Sisters" and "The Bookstore Wedding.” Chris read MOBY DICK by Herman Melville (that's twice this year) and a novelization about his relationship with Nathaniel Hawthorne, THE WHALE: A Love Story by Mark Beauregard. She also read her first book club selection from Book Browse, THE ROSE ARBOR, by Rhys Bowen. Happy Listening!
