Mandolinist John Reischman joins me on the show this week. I've actually known John for many years, as he moved to Vancouver in the 90's and when I was starting to do more acoustic music, our paths would cross at festivals and I'd also bring him in for various projects and sessions. John is an absolute master of his instrument with a unique touch and tone that is truly remarkable. He grew up in California and came up in the Bay Area music scene, where he joined The Good Ol' Persons, which was up until then an all-female bluegrass band that featured Kathy Kallick and Sally Van Meter. After touring and recording with them for a couple of years, John scored a gig in the groundbreaking Tony Rice Unit, one of the ultimate ensembles in modern bluegrass and acoustic music. John toured and recorded with Tony for a few years and developed an incredible style that owes almost as much to jazz horn and piano players as well as different kinds of world music as it does to traditional bluegrass, although John certainly can stand up with the best in the world in any traditional setting. The Tony Rice albums Backwaters and Devlin feature this lineup with John's amazing playing. After leaving Tony Rice, John moved to Vancouver, where he formed the Jaybirds, a group he has been performing with now for over 20 years. John also made a solo record during the pandemic called “New Time and Old Acoustic” which features guest appearances by Molly Tuttle, Chris Eldridge, Todd Phillips and many more. It was great to re-connect with John, and get a chance to talk about meeting and playing with Bill Monroe, his coveted mandolin, and his history recording and touring in the world of bluegrass and acoustic music. With Ravana defeated, Arya goes to visit the Medicine Woman one last time. He realizes it is Ma as her True Self. As they talk, many things become clear. The reason for his journey to the backwaters wasn't to find Deep Medicine but to see his Ma, not as a helpless woman on life support, but here guiding him. The Deep Medicine he sought, was in the Ramayana the whole time. Just as Arya was key to the epic's survival, the epic was also key to his survival. Its stories were real and powerful. With the power of the Ramayana in his hands, he could finally say goodbye to Ma. Complex stream systems require tailored approaches to address the conservation and resource concerns of Kansas landowners. Andy Klein and Jarran Tindle are normally found on the streambanks of Kansas, but we persuaded them to share their wealth of experience with us on episode 3 of the Kansas Forest Service Podcast. What does a Riparian Forester do? Andy Klein explains that as a riparian forester, his job is to re-establish riparian forests along the rivers and large streams of Kansas. He most often works in the state's steambank protection program. Jarran works closely with NRCS to plant buffers on small streams and creeks with Kansas landowners. The root of it all. Both Andy and Jarran were drawn to forestry because of their love of the outdoors and a desire to do something positive for the environment. While Kansas is not always known for its forestry, streambank systems contribute greatly to the ecosystem that fuels the natural resource systems of Kansas. Jarran speaks about the ways he helps landowners realize that they can meet their conservation goals and financial needs with practical approaches to streambank management. Conservation goals of landowners. Erosion and the visual change and movement of streams is of great concern to landowners. Jarran finds that many landowners are driven by a desire to improve their land and make it more productive. By understanding the natural processes of streams to heal themselves, Jarran walks landowners through natural processes of flooding, sedimentation and movement that may have negative impacts. Riparian forestry and flooding. Riparian areas of Kansas took a hard hit from scouring flooding and backwater flooding in the spring of 2019. Andy sees the destructive impacts of flooding firsthand on the watersheds he works in daily. Backwater in the Tuttle Creek Reservoir deposited over two feet of sediment on top of newly established seedlings and killed or stress many mature trees. Farmers were then faced with difficult decision on how to handle sediment deposited on their fields. Flooding and sediment deposition has made Kansas farm ground productive and fertile. What can communities do to reduce the risk of flooding. Municipalities can invest in watershed through financial support to improve water quality for their cities and by planting wider riparian corridors in areas they manage. Slowing down flood waters reduces the sedimentation of water in streams and rivers. Investing in the land and streams has positive results for all involved. How to contact Jarran and Andy. Andy Klein, Water Quality Forester Email: ajklein@ksu.edu Phone: 785-564-6673 Jarran Tindle, Watershed Forester Email: tindle@ksu.eduPhone: 785-532-3340 https://www.kansasforests.org/streamside_forestry/ https://www.facebook.com/kansasforestservice/ Interesting streambank finds. Backwaters in the Tuttle Creek Reservoir area also deposited this chest freezer in a tree 20 feet in the air. Backwater areas are designed to be part of the flood storage of federal reservoirs.

PODCAST #10: GUMILEV, WORLD TRAVELER by Martin Bidney Nikolay Gumilev (1886-1921) was Russia's pre-eminent traveler poet. He has even said that his sponsor, his supernatural patroness, was the “Muse of distant travel,” the Goddess of Journeying. His journeys were adventures in self-discovery. TRAVEL, ADVENTURE, RISK, & SELF-DISCOVERY could be the motto of his life-work. Is it a surprise that, working in the literary department of the Soviet bureaucracy to translate, compile, and publish major poems of world literature, he should focus on translating England's greatest poem of travel, adventure, risk, and self-discovery? And this is Samuel Taylor Coleridge's “Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” I'll offer a few lines of each, to show Gumilev as connoisseur-translator. Then I'll use 97. Adam's Dream as a frame narrative to orient us to the twofold character of Gumilev's poetic travels: joyful self-discovery in the face of risk, peril, and death. Adam and Eve were legendary history's first self-discovering travelers, having left a protected garden for a protracted Time of Transition. In Romantic Flowers 35. Giraffe playfully suggests to a young person a trip to present-day Africa, and 36. Rhinoceros continues in that spirit. The poet identifies with both traveler and animals. Yet risks for travelers are shown in 33. Contagion and 52. Forest Fire. Gumilev's travels to far-off places and cultures resulted in poems of peril and alarm. But also humor, and amusement! My favorite is one of his last lyrics, 258. Drunken Dervish, portrait of a hippie mystic. In contrast, 260. Prayer of the Masters portrays a spokesman for traditional icon painters in a Greek monastery. Gumilev, adventurer and studious literary organizer, can identify strongly with each: the rule-breaking rebel and the spiritual seeker bound to the constraints of duty. Poem 1. Sonnet presents the poet as youthful knight in shining armor, an early Spanish explorer of the Americas, triumphantly envisioning his beauty-adorned death. Then, already in 58. Old Conquistador (Pearls), the explorer plays dice with death as rival. Who can win such a game? In 72. Antiquity boredom generates a burst of desire for visionary journeys. Gumilev's travel gets spooky when he enters the dream world and encounters the preternatural, as in 49. Possessed. Life and death, travel and risk, peril and self-discovery combine in Gumilev. 75. Backwaters, a poem astonishing for sudden power, contrasts with 211. Ezbekiyeh, where the hero's life hangs in the balance between affirmation and a sudden end.

Nestled along the coast of India's most southwesterly state, the Backwaters are a 600 km-long series of lakes, rivers, channels and canals linking the jungle to the sea. Their story, and Kerala's story, is the tale of maritime trade, and to help tell that story, Brandon Huebner from the Maritime History Podcast stops by. Kerala is the birthplace of pepper, and given how rancid meat would get in the age before refrigeration, the Mediterranean world craved it. The Romans traded extensively with the kingdoms of Southern India, we discuss how they figured out the monsoons, and what they brought in exchange for that piquant spice. Tianna Gratta from Passportchronicles.com was just in Kerala, and she gives her insights about traveling there today and riding on a houseboat along the backwaters: definitely the most chill of all the wonders on this show. We try different Keralan curries, rich with coconut, curry leaves, and pepper, and as the coup de grace, Marcus Aurelius makes a cameo, as trade to Asia had brought something unexpected to Rome: a plague. You take the good, you take the bad...
