In this episode, FAQ is: What are the best stretching methods for solo travel. Today's Destination is: Kerala, India Today's Misstep- I did not get to use my airline credits on Spirit. Travel Advice: U-shaped airline pillows can be stuffed with clothes. FAQ: What are the best stretching methods for solo travel? Stretching offers several benefits for your solo female traveler's body, including improvements in flexibility, range of motion, and overall well-being. Here are some ways stretching can positively impact your body: Increased Flexibility: Stretching helps lengthen muscles and tendons, which can improve your flexibility. This increased flexibility can enhance your ability to perform various activities and exercises. Improved Range of Motion: Regular stretching can contribute to an increased range of motion in your joints. This is particularly beneficial for activities that require a wide range of motion, such as playing sports or performing certain exercises. Enhanced Circulation: Stretching promotes better blood circulation throughout the body. Improved circulation can help deliver nutrients to muscles and remove waste products, improving overall health. Reduced Muscle Tension and Soreness: Stretching can help alleviate muscle tension and reduce soreness after physical activity. It can also aid in preventing muscle imbalances, leading to discomfort or injury. Improved Posture: Stretching the muscles around the spine, shoulders, and hips can contribute to better posture. Proper posture is essential for preventing musculoskeletal issues and promoting overall spinal health. Enhanced Athletic Performance: Athletes often incorporate stretching into their warm-up routines to prepare their bodies for physical activity. Improved flexibility and range of motion can positively impact athletic performance and reduce the risk of injuries. Stress Relief: Gentle stretching exercises like yoga can promote relaxation and reduce stress. This is achieved through physical movement, controlled breathing, and mindfulness. Joint Health: Stretching helps maintain the health of your joints by promoting fluid circulation and preventing stiffness. This is especially important as you age, as flexibility and joint health become increasingly crucial. Improved Balance and Coordination: Stretching exercises that target specific muscle groups can enhance balance and coordination. This is beneficial for activities that require stability and precise movements. I would like to point out that stretching should be done gradually and in a controlled manner. Avoid bouncing or forcing your body into extreme positions, as this can lead to injuries. A well-rounded fitness routine that combines strength training, cardiovascular exercise, and flexibility training (including stretching) is generally recommended for overall health and fitness. Today's destination: Kerala, India Kerala, a state on India's tropical Malabar Coast, has nearly 600km of Arabian Sea shoreline. It's known for its palm-lined beaches and backwaters, a network of canals. Inland are the Western Ghats, mountains whose slopes support tea, coffee and spice plantations and wildlife. National parks and other sanctuaries are home to elephants, langur monkeys, and tigers. Named one of the world's ten paradises by National Geographic Traveler, Kerala is famous especially for its ecotourism initiatives and beautiful backwaters. Its unique culture and traditions, coupled with its varied demography, have made Kerala one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. I flew Indigo Air to Cochin, near Kerala. I was in southwestern India now. Today's Misstep- I did not get to use my airline credits on Spirit. Today's Travel Advice-U Shaped Airline pillows can be stuffed with clothes. If asked to think of parts of the world that lead in social measures like literacy rates, life expectancy and low infant mortality rates, you might first imagine a small, affluent country in Northern Europe or East Asia. But in this episode, we explore a place that achieves remarkable results on these and other measures without having the high income levels typically associated with states that have broad-based social welfare programs. Dan Richards talks with Patrick Heller, professor of sociology and international and public affairs at Watson, about the surprising story of the Indian state of Kerala. Despite being a relatively low-income part of the world, Kerala has managed to foster social welfare programs in a way few countries in the world can match. And it does so while maintaining widespread participation in what Heller describes as “India's noisy democracy.”So how does Kerala do it, and what lessons can the rest of the world learn from its example? Listen to find out. Read Patrick Heller and Olle Törnquist's recent article on Kerala. Learn more about Watson's other podcasts. Transcript coming soon to our website.

Akhina Mohan from Kerala India, plans to start alarmo, a youth driven, Kerala based task force that nudges people to act immediately. Nothing makes her more furious than the mistreatment and irresponsibility towards the environment. But Akhina never had the courage to stand up and speak out. Participating in relief work during the 2018 Kerala floods, helped her to break out of her shell. Now, she knows, her actions can make a difference! The younger generation needs to realize that their planet is on fire, and together they have to start saving it.

We’ve all heard the phrase “stay in your lane,” an admonition that can actually cause paralysis for people just stepping into social change work. When thinking about activism, I wanted to share a framework that holds the concept of “lanes” more loosely and graciously. Deepa Iyer, author of We Too Sing America: South Asian, Arab, Muslim and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial Future and creator of the podcast Solidarity Is This, created a tool, “Mapping our Roles in Social Change Ecosystems” in 2017. Deepa describes the framework as a tool that “can help individuals, networks, and organizations align and get in right relationship with social change values, individual roles, and the broader ecosystem.” It is a framework that can deepen our understanding of the many necessary roles that people play in social change. The Social Change Ecosystem Map can be a mirror we hold up to ourselves, prompting necessary introspection. Looking at the wheel of roles I might ask myself: Is my “occupation” of multiple roles actually harming the success of this organization? Is there someone else who might step into a role I’ve traditionally held onto? Is the role I play the best use of my interests and skills? Does it give me joy? A map is also a tool that helps us understand the nuance and dynamism of social change organizations. Importantly, it can help each of us respond more confidently to the question “Where do I fit in? What is my role?” Like most frameworks, the Social Change Ecosystem allows for fluidity and change. For example, we might find that in one organization or area of social change, we play one role. In another organization, we may find we fit most comfortably into another role. In addition, our roles may change over time. The beauty of this framework is that it compels us to see these roles as equally important, even though traditionally, we may hold up Frontline Responders or Disruptors as more important than, say, the Caregivers or Storytellers. It is interesting to consider the ways that white patriarchal supremacy has infiltrated the social change ecosystem, causing us to hold certain roles as more or less valuable. Deepa and I begin the conversation by talking about co-liberation and the importance of centering anti-Black liberation as a means of liberation for all. At the same time, centering anti-Black liberation does not mean that understanding other forms of oppression is not important. Again, we must be on the lookout for the ways that supremacy divides us even in our anti-racism work. We’d be delighted to hear what questions this conversation raises for you and encourage you to take advantage of the Roles for Social Change Map and Reflection Guide (see below). Consider not only your role in your organization but also in your family and community. In this podcast, Deepa and I talked about: How galvanizing moments invite us to integrate action into our lives; What solidarity means: a bridge between our internal commitment and an active commitment to end anti-Black racism; Why a commitment to ending anti-Black racism is a commitment to ending racism altogether against everyone; Why social change work is at its core relationship building; Deepa’s Social Change Ecosystem and its roles; How to use it personally and within organizations How it can push a person to step more deeply into a role, or let go of outgrown or less aligned roles; How organizations can use it as a tool for analysis about its ecosystem Why the Ecosystem of Social Change disrupts the concept of hierarchy in social change Bio: Deepa Iyer is a South Asian American writer, strategist, lawyer, and racial justice advocate. Currently, Deepa is a Strategic Advisor at Building Movement Project and Director of Solidarity Is, a project that provides trainings, narratives, and resources on building deep and lasting multiracial solidarity. Deepa’s areas of expertise include the post 9/11 America experiences of South Asian, Muslim, Arab and Sikh immigrants, immigration and civil rights policies, and racial equity and solidarity practices. Deepa has worked at various national and local organizations with a focus on immigrant and racial justice. She served as executive director of South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) for a decade, and has also held positions at Race Forward, the US Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, the Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center, and the Asian American Justice Center. Deepa has received fellowships from Open Society Foundations and the Social Change Initiative, and in 2019, she received an honorary doctoral degree from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Iyer serves on the Advisory Council of the Emergent Fund, which resources grassroots organizing and power building in communities of color who are facing injustice based on racial, ethnic, religious and other forms of discrimination. Deepa’s first book, We Too Sing America: South Asian, Arab, Muslim and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial Future (The New Press 2015), received a 2016 American Book Award and was selected as a top 10 multicultural non-fiction books of 2015 by Booklist. Since We Too Sing America was published, Deepa has been part of over 50 community conversations around the country on the themes in the book, at college campuses, non-profit organizations, faith-based institutions among others. Deepa hosts a podcast called Solidarity Is This, available on iTunes, and provides trainings on racial equity and solidarity to non-profits, government agencies, public and private stakeholders, educators, and institutions of higher learning. Iyer also regularly facilitates group gatherings and strategy sessions. Dr. D. Dhanuraj, the chairman of the Center for Public Policy Research in India (CPPR) discusses the institutionalized discrimination against women that is a direct product of the Kerala Shops & Establishments Act in Kerala, India. CPPR worked tirelessly with the communist-led government of Kerala to implement significant policy reforms that allow women more freedom in the market. CPPR’s policy prescriptions dismantled discriminatory measures in the Kerala Shops & Establishment Act by providing an amendment that allows shops to remain open all hours of the week, introduces shifts for employees, allows women to work beyond the previously described hours of 6am-7pm, and establishes an online business registration platform that will allow businesses to act more freely in the market.Register for Liberty Forum & Freedom Dinner 2020

0:12 – New York Times economics reporter Conor Dougherty (@ConorDougherty) has written an extensive portrait and history of the movement swarming local governments to demand they build more development — known as YIMBY (Yes In My Backyard). His new book is Golden Gates: Fighting for Housing in America. He argues that when the U.S. built the suburbs, it didn't just create sprawl, it created a political problem: fragmented political power among spread-out homeowners who agitated to protect their style of living and neighborhood property values. 1:08 – A new book, Migrating to Prison: America's Obsession with Locking Up Immigrants, traces U.S. discrimination and efforts to criminalize immigrants across history, from the Chinese Exclusion Act to today's “baby jails” and deportations under Democratic and Republican administrations. We talk with César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández (@crimmigration). 1:53 – How did the Indian state of Kerala, which has nearly the population of California, contain the coronavirus without leaving its poor and vulnerable residents stranded? Just four people in Kerala have died from Covid-19. Reporter Jasvinder Sehgal looks at what drove the strong health and social welfare response in the region. The post Explaining America's obsession with locking up immigrants; plus, a history of YIMBYism; and how Kerala, India is beating Covid-19 appeared first on KPFA.

India is undergoing a deep transformation at the moment of which politics is just the surface. The rise of the BJP and his Hindutva ideology -- the idea of "Hinduness" rather than the religion of Hinduism -- is convulsing much of the nation, while pushing forward and remaking it from its recent past, which was more liberal, socialist, and minority-focused since Independence. There is still significant resistance to the BJP's intended transformation of India, and in other circles, also scepticism that the BJP will be able to change much.English-speaking intellectuals -- either liberal or Marxist -- are one such group. Muslims and Christians, in general, are another. And Hindus from the South also resist the BJP tide.As India seeks to navigate itself in the new, emerging global order, with Russia and China becoming major players, how does this bode for India's place in the world? How is India's redefining of itself related to the global emergence of populism and nationalism, against the liberal and globalist elites?Today, my guest is Indian journalist Pramod Kumar, based in Kerala, South India. Pramod has been a journalist with one of the leading Indian newspapers, THE HINDU, for about a decade and then a senior advisor with UNDP in Asia Pacific for another decade. He has since left the UNDP to concentrate on his writing. His subjects include contemporary politics, socio-economic issues and public health. The history of indenture and the life of the Indian diaspora that emerged from indentured labour has been a subject of deep interest to him as well, which is of great interest to me, as I am a descendant of Indian indentured labourers here in the Caribbean.Topics discussed include:- the decimation throughout India of the Indian National Congress, the once dominant party of Nehru and Gandhi that led the country into Independence- the political march of the BJP into the South of India- the underlying, deep, existential nature of the rise of the BJP- the failure of Congress and the failure of liberalism- the importance of global Indians for the BJP and its transformation of India- the distinctive politics of Narendra Modi- the BLP's so-called "fascism" and the (weakening) resistance of communists, Muslims, Christians, and South Indians to the BJP- the opposition of the Western media to Modi and the BJP- BJP is now the only national party- BJP's dominance may now last for several decades- examining Dr. Shashi Tharoor's exceptional victory over the BJP in Kerala- the importance of the Communist Party in Kerala- India's changing place and difficulties in international relations with the US, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia- the interest of the Indian Diaspora in Indian affairs- redefining the boundaries of the Indian nation to include the Diaspora- the new challenge for the BJP now that they have vanquished the Congress Party - delivery on promises- defining the new India
Thank you! ::: Sailing and Exploring the Dominican Republic with Kids Meet Cole. He already has 20 stamps in his passport and is an integral part of a sailing team and he 's not even old enough to drive yet. Cole's sailing partners are his mom, Krista and his father, Brad. Together, these three have explored many south Pacific destinations as backpackers and much of the Caribbean as sailors. I spoke to them from the Dominican Republic, where Cole was just about to start school. Joining a local school for a while in the Dominican Republic is a great way for kids to make friends, learn more about the culture and practice the language in a real-world scenario. In this Epic Education Radio interview, Brad and Krista talk about parenting and education on the boat and what a typical day is like for a sailing family (hint: there isn't a "typical" day). We also talk about the real risks and rewards of a sailing life, including stories of danger and triumph on the high seas. Listen in if you're interested in boatschooling, sailing with children, and what it's like anchoring in the Dominican Republic with kids. Listen in! And please share! Fort Kochi or Cochin is an extrordinary place to visit in South India. Ruled by the Portuguese, the Dutch, and British and of coarse Rajahs it is a wonderful mix of architecture, history, and a harmony of local people and various cultures that is unique in India. As local resident experts have explained to me the most rewarding part of a visit to Fort Cochin is not necessarily the sights you’ll see. It’s more about the appreciation of the local culture and people and the relaxed feeling you will easily pick up on right away. It’s one of my favorite destinations in India. On my last visit I spent time broadcasting from a number of locations around the Fort Cochin area relaying my thoughts and impressions of the region and answering questions from viewers on Periscope about travel to Kerala and general travel related questions and subjects on Asia. One of the highlights of my stay in Cochin was enjoying the sunsets from the town’s nearby beaches.Help others discover Far East Adventure Travel in iTunes-Submit a review:https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/adventure-travel-far-east-inspired-by-rick-steves-lonely/id890305531?mt=2Support Far East Adventure Travel and become a sponsor for as little as $1/month visit my Patreon page:https://www.patreon.com/user?u=4035923
What's worldschooling? What's a gap year family? Read on and you'll find out...and hopefully consider both for you and your kids, as well! A Gap Year Family, a Lesson in Worldschooling Meet the Kraymoores. That's Charlie Kramer and Brenna Moore. Charlie and Brenna have two kids, they're doing what many a gap year family are doing: pulling their kids out of school for a year (or more) to travel. So far, the Kraymoores have visited multiple destinations in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and are now in Asia. What is Worldschooling? As the name suggests, worldschooling is all about using the world as your school. You don't have to travel internationally...or travel at all to practice worldschooling. But it helps! For Charlie and Brenna's kids so far, worldschooling means learning about Anne Frank at the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam, and learning about the Massai people in Kenya. Worldschooling can also happen in conventional schools, as well, as you'll hear about in the interview. A Gap Year Family Plan Diverted The Kraymoores' gap year family plans took an unexpected turn while in France. Out for the day with a local guide, they began to talk about Kerala, India. Before having children, Charlie and Brenna had spent time in the ssouthernIndia state. They were so enamored with it that they named their first child after it. Their daughter's name is Kerala, and it so happened that this guide had friends and family in the state of Kerala. One thing led to another and the Kraymoores changed their plans and returned to Kerala. They stayed with the guide's family, and their daughter enrolled in the same school as the family's daughter. There was even room for their son Julien in the preschool! Such cultural exchanges are at the heart of worldschooling. Taco Tuesday: A Gap Year Family Routine When a family takes a gap year to travel, many old routines get thrown out the window. However, one routine this family kept is Taco Tuesday. Every Tuesday, they make tacos...or something similar. "You can find the ingredients almost anywhere," says Charlie, "If not, you can find something close to a tortilla." Worldschooling has also let this Gap Year Family have more time together for education, as well. The kids have spent some time in local schools in India, but before and after that, they are with their parents all day, every day, which allows them to get the individual attention their education — and their emotional needs — require. Funding a Family Gap Year Brenna and Charlie talk about how they leveraged their home in LA to save money for travel. Renting it out through various means, the family has saved a ton of money. They talk about it in more detail in the podcast. An ancient Chinese fishing net and traditional fishing boats are still used to catch a variety of fish and creatures from the sea in Fort Cochin-Kerala, India[/caption] Kerala is one of my favorite states to travel through in India. It has an interesting history filled with some of the most varied culture and religion in all of the country. Fort Cochin at 35% has the highest per capital Christian population in India. Coupled with a smoothly assimilated remainder of mostly Hindu and Muslims, the feeling of harmony amongst the groups could be the highest than anywhere else in India. Kerala also boasts the highest literacy rate in the country, 93%, and the highest life expectancy, 77 years. Spices have been exported from the region since 3000 B.C. Walking through the streets and alleys of Matancherry next to Fort Cochin can still feel romantic and like a slice from another time with small warehouses piled high with sacks of nutmeg, mace, cumin and many other spices. Much of which is used in Ayurvedic medicine, one of the main reasons tourists visit the state. Ayurvedic clinics, yoga retreats, beach side resorts and backwater houseboat cruises are some of the most popular draws to Kerala. On my last visit to Kerala I spent a few weeks in the Fort Cochin area before traveling further south to the beach towns of Varkala and Kovalam, with stops in the capital, Thiruvananthapuram, or the older and easier name to pronounce, Trivandrum, as well as the backwater capital Alleppey. Join me in this episode of Far East Adventure Travel for live stream highlights of "God's Own Country"-Kerala, India.
