A few weeks ago I was in Los Angeles on a family reconnection tour seeing relatives I had not seen during the pandemic. I was speaking with my niece Megan and her husband Randy, and they shared an improbable story about a dog. Randy and Megan and their children had loved their dog, a miniature schnauzer, named Kelsie, that was a part of their family for 15 years. That is a long life in dog years. When Kelsie passed away, it was a big loss, and they mourned her. She died just as the pandemic was setting in. Pets became intensely popular during the pandemic. Cute little puppies were in great demand. Megan and her family would have wanted another dog to love, but given the great demand for puppies during the pandemic, they thought it would be a very long time until they had their new puppy. Then one night something unexpected happens. Megan is preparing dinner, getting ready to put chicken in the oven. The phone rings. It is her mother-in-law Helene who says to her: If you want a really cute puppy, a Cavapoo, come to my house right now. Off to her mother in law's she goes.

Beth Bashert is the Mayor of Ypsilanti, MI. She’s incredibly passionate about music and the arts and has been an active community organizer. We met this year as fellow speakers for a Grove Studios event where I was inspired by her passion for Creatives and community building. In this episode, we discuss her role as a key player in community activism, the importance of dealing with mental health issues, why society must ensure creatives are paid, the power of truth, and the value of silence and patience. About the Guest: After over having lived here for 25 years, raised our family, and have been active in our community and in politics as a campaign manager and community organizer, I am proud to serve our city as an elected member of City Council. Ypsilanti has many challenges we have to meet and resolve in the next period of time. Water Street, a looming fiscal problem, changes in the economy and the need to lure businesses and residents to choose our community. I want to be a part of the solutions. In my work as a community organizer, I have been a leader who has brought people together time and time again. I have worked with hundreds of volunteers, communicated difficult and complex issues to a broad range of people, and had both victories and losses. In all that work, I was always trying to solve a problem, make our community safer or more comfortable for all people, or move a process forward. Whether you agree with every campaign or issue I have worked on, it is clear I am working towards solutions and cures. I regularly hold office hours where citizens can meet with me about any topic, question, concern, or just meet to get to know each other. Meeting one on one is also something I am happy to do. Advocacy, leadership, and the balance between both of those roles will be my goal. Agree or disagree, I will listen to everyone. Activist, advocate, leading salesperson, councilwoman, she's been called many things in her lifetime but "Your Honor" is something Beth Bashert is still getting used to. In 1993 she and her wife Lisa were the first lesbian couple to have an engagement announcement in The Ann Arbor News. At the ceremony later that year, they legally took the name Bashert (meaning “destined, meant to be”) a new family name for both. When the window opened up five years ago for same-gender loving couples in Michigan to be legally married the Basherts joined the 300 couples who took advantage of that window. Already a member of Ypsilanti’s City Council, in 2018 Bashert ran for and won the mayoral race with 63 percent of the vote. She ran on a platform that advocated for changing the city’s budget, bringing back services and increasing development. She is the recipient of many awards including Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign, Living Pride Award from Washtenaw Rainbow Action Project, Political Action Award from PFLAG and the Gay & Lesbian Pride Award. Being both the Mayor of a small city and a leading salesperson at a local family owned car dealership is hectic and exciting nut Beth Bashert manages to do both working and talking with people about their needs at both. It turns out serving people does not change much even in different environments. She has focused on serving people long before taking on either of these roles.  In 1999, she was selected as the founding President of Michigan Equality an organization designed to identify, educate and mobilize voters to help further equality for LGBT people in Michigan. She was the first Director of Fund Development for the Ruth Ellis Center serving LGBTQ youth including many who were homeless.

The Shadchan says, "So tell me, what are you looking for?" And, out comes the laundry list."I need someone who is extroverted, funny, and outgoing.""I need a woman who is very frum, good, kind, tolerant, and funny.""I need a guy who is tall, a take-charge type, strong but not headstrong."And unwittingly, many people make the first mistake of the dating game - they aren't looking for their Bashert- they have already formed him in their minds, and now are out to find the one that comes the closest to that image. It is almost like the children's toy Mr. Potato Head. You get to design the doll, choose red lips, big ears, small eyes, short legs Before going out most people go through a sort of personal inventory: "Let's see. Since I am., I need" Unconsciously, they put together a wish list of qualities to take out into the market place. Then amazingly, they find themselves frustrated. "I just can't find Mr. Right."This is a must-listen-to Shmuz offering a practical down to earth way to avoid the two most common mistakes made in finding and keeping your Bashert. Would you recognize your soul’s complement in another? Beyond the bliss of actually finding your soul mate, there is a belief that the universe hinges on predetermined people finding their other half, their bashert, to maintain cosmic balance. To be immersed in heady intoxication, passion, courage, adventure, intertwined in a duality, a divine double twinned in heart and soul. Heartfelt, magical, mystical, soulful - all of this is what is felt with bashert. A fabulous novel that will ignite all of your senses, shift your perspective on how to truly live life to the fullest in love, passion, deep intimacy at all levels. So very uplifting and much needed in this cynical world of violence, hatred, war, bullying and destruction. You will be taken away and you will come back changed - in awe of all that is possible, all that is available, and appreciative of the entanglements that bring us to where we are and who we are meant to be with on our journey.

Hey there word nerds! This episode is brought to you buy our amazing word nerd fans and supporters on Patreon. If you’d like to help support this show, hop over to patreon.com/DIYMFA Today I’m thrilled to have Herb Freed on the show. Herb started his adult life as an ordained rabbi and became the spiritual leader of Temple Beth Shalom in Lake Mahopac, New York, at the same time producing and directing three shows at the Maidman Playhouse in New York City. Eventually, he resigned his pulpit to become a movie director. Today we’ll be speaking about his book Bashert, which is out now.   In this episode Herb and I discuss: When you’re writing based on true events, which elements do you change for the book? Which things do you keep the same? What are some of the considerations that drive these choices? Why tell a story as a novel instead of a memoir, if it’s based on true events? What do you need to consider when you are deciding between telling the absolute truth versus the conceptual Truth? Write about things you are passionate about. Write the story you can’t not tell. How screenwriting can shape a novel writer’s process. What skills transfer over? What aspects don’t translate? Plus, his #1 tip for writers. About the Author Herb Freed started his adult life as an ordained rabbi and became the spiritual leader of Temple Beth Shalom in Lake Mahopac, New York while producing and directing three shows at the Maidman Playhouse in New York City. Eventually, he resigned his pulpit to become a movie director. He has directed and produced 15 feature films most of which have had psychological, spiritual and/or social themes in spite of their commercial categories. He is best known for Graduation Day, a horror film, and Tomboy, a teenage romp, as well as the psychological drama Haunts, and CHILD2MAN, a story of survival during the Watts riots. You can find out more about Herb Freed at herbfreed.com Bashert Would you recognize your soul’s complement in another? Beyond the bliss of actually finding your soul mate, there is a belief that the universe hinges on predetermined people finding their other half, their bashert, to maintain cosmic balance. In Bashert (Bellrock Press; February 14, 2017) author, screenwriter, director and former rabbi Herb Freed immerses us in the heady intoxication and thunderous losses of what it really means to be bashert. Dan Sobol and Marion Gladstone meet by chance at a screenwriter’s event in Los Angeles. He’s a rabbi turned director known for his cinematic television commercials; she’s a writer and film editor who is recovering from a tabloid-headline screaming Hollywood divorce. From the moment Marion hears Dan’s voice, she knows—and so does he. It’s bashert. But when did the course of true love ever run smooth? Dan and Marion are soon partners in business as well as life, traveling the world to create movies. He directs, she writes and edits, and life becomes an amazing adventure—until Cancun. There, among the ruins of the Mayan civilization, Marion has an eerie premonition that has the potential to change everything. Drawing upon his own personal experience, Freed spins a tale unflinching in its examination of life, but weaving along the edge of magical realism. From the bright lights of Hollywood to Mexico, Israel, Paris and the dreamy exhilaration of Jamaica, Bashert is a love story about transcending life, loss and the boundaries we mistakenly place on our lives and our hearts. I was fortunate enough to meet David Sable over a lunch that we hosted almost a couple of years ago. David is the Global CEO of Y&R, one of the world’s largest advertising agencies with over 16,000 employees around the world.   This Podcast is brought to you by Exact Media, which works with brands to sample their products using the excess space in eCommerce parcels. Companies like P&G, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, L'Oréal, Coca-Cola and Pepsi have all used Exact Media to reach consumers in their homes. Learn more at www.exactmedia.io.  Here’s a sneak peak and some of my favorite moments from our conversation:  Was the son of a rabbi and so because his dad was always in the spotlight, he always had to be careful of his actions.  Incredible mentors were critical to his development. People such as Edward Chapman III, Harold Burson and Lester Wunderman. Getting mentors was serendipitous and never planned.  Career was never planned and was non-linear. Instead, he chased after opportunities where he could constantly learn and grow. There’s a Yiddish term called Bashert which means "It was meant to happen". If you don’t grab the opportunity, it’s not going to happen.  Nearly botched a major advertising campaign for Kinney Shoes (now Foot Locker) because CBS decided to change the date that they were going to air The Wizard of Oz.  Huge proponent of reading. He recommends reading the classics like Shakespeare and Harry Potter as there's a reason why they have survived through so many generations.   Being in the ad industry during the period of Mad Men was not always easy. There were projects that people wouldn’t give him because he was Jewish and "different". He shared some of those stories on the PBS special, The Real Mad Men of Madison Avenue.   On spending time with family, he believes that if you’re present 100%, it covers the times that you’re not able to be there.  As part of practicing Sabbath, he disconnects from all devices from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. It’s an incredibly powerful way to practice mindfulness, read and listen more. It can almost feel like you’re on vacation once a week. David wrote about this in one of his posts for the Huffington Post. This is something that another leader in the marketing world, Gary Vaynerchuck (4x NYT Best Seller, CEO of VaynerMedia) also practices with his family time.  Always wanted to be an astronaut. He’s scared shitless of heights but would still love to be able to travel to space one day.
