The impact that Blake Snyder's Save the Cat® book series has had on Hollywood screenwriting is incalculable. Rarely does a book change the way screenwriters approach story and structure. In his best-selling book, Save the Cat! Goes to the Movies: The Screenwriter's Guide to Every Story Ever Told, Blake Snyder provided 50 “beat sheets” to 50 films, mostly studio-made.Now his student, screenwriter and novelist Salva Rubio applies Blake's principles to 50 independent, auteur, European, and cult films (again with 5 beat sheets for each of Blake's 10 genres in the book Save the Cat!® Goes to the Indies: The Screenwriters Guide to 50 Films from the Masters. If you're a moviegoer, you'll discover a language to analyze film and understand how filmmakers can effectively reach audiences. If you're a writer, this book reveals how those who came before you tackled the same challenges you are facing with the films you want to write. Writing a “rom-com”? Check out the “Buddy Love” chapter for a “beat for beat” dissection of Before Sunrise, The Reader, Blue Is the Warmest Color, and more to see how Linklater and Krizan, David Hare, and Kechiche and Lacroix structured their films.Scripting a horror film? Read the “Monster in the House” section and discover how 28 Days Later and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre are the same movie – and what you need to do to write a scary story that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.Want to execute a great mystery? Go to the “Whydunit” chapter and learn about the “dark turn” that's essential to the heroes of The Big Lebowski, The French Connection, and Michael Clayton.Want your protagonist to go up against an evil “institution”? Consider how Mamet handled Glengarry Glen Ross and Tarantino's famed Pulp Fiction.Writing a “Superhero” story? See how Susannah Grant structured Erin Brockovich, Anderson & Baumbach worked out Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Gilliam & Stoppard & McKeown laid the foundation for Brazil. With these 50 beat sheets, you'll see how “hitting the beats” creates stories that resonate the world over for these outstanding writers—and how you can follow in their footsteps.Salva Rubio is a novelist, screenwriter, and author. He has been nominated at the Spanish Goya Awards for Best Animation Feature. It's no secret that there is a labor shortage in the trades and it's no secret that a lot of the younger generation has turned away from it. There are so many things stacked against employers right now that make it a lot harder for them to make the next generation excited about getting into the trades. The CEO of Windy City Equipment, Josh Zolin, thinks this is mainly a result of the societal norms pushing the perception that blue-collar jobs indicate a lack of success. In his book, Blue Is the New White, Josh emphasizes how some of the most lucrative jobs out there are blue-collar jobs. Josh joins Ryan Englin in this episode to discuss how there is more than one path to a stable career and a great financial future. Success doesn't always have to mean a college degree and Josh is here to clear that trade misconception.

The controversy was compounded by Exarchopoulos and Seydoux's accounts of Kechiche's abusive behavior on set. Is it possible to view such a talked-about movie in isolation? How to Encourage Gen Z to Embrace Skilled Trades with Josh Zolin & Greg Crumpton

What's the single most valuable skillset for a skilled tradesman? Surprise, it's not 100 percent talent. Soft skills can be the secret ingredient for success in blue-collar trades, according to Josh Zolin, author of the book Blue Is the New White: The Best Path to Success No One Told You About and CEO of Windy City Equipment Services. Josh joined Service Logic Vice President Greg Crumpton and host Sean Heath on this new episode of Conversations from The EDGE with Service Logic. "I used to think soft skills were 50/50 versus technical prowess, but now I think overall EQ is superior," Josh said. "There's always help on the technical side, but being able to put the customer at ease far outweighs being able to read a meter or a set of gauges." Josh and Greg point to emotional intelligence, empathy for customers, and a service-minded attitude as traits that fall under the "soft skills" umbrella. "That's really the path to success," Josh said. But before the industry can extoll the virtues of soft skills, it must first change its perception. A career in the skilled trades was once well-regarded as a good, lucrative profession, but somewhere along the way society labeled skilled tradesmen as blue-collar and less desirable than college-educated white-collar workers, Josh explained. "The responsibility falls on us inside the trades to bring to light what a career in the trades actually means and how many different trajectories are available," Josh said. Greg said, "That means you have to reach out and bring people with you. It's all about relations."

Welcome back to the dHarmic Evolution podcast with me James Kevin O'Connor, singer/songwriter, audio/video artist, and master storyteller. On today's episode, we visit the Land Down Under once again via the talented artist, Susan Muranty!   Susan is not only an amazing singer-songwriter, she also is a painter, and sculpter! Talk about a creative soul. Susan and I talk about her music, her passion, and how she loves to live her life in beauty. We delve into a creative talk about how a painting touched her life, opened her eyes as to the importance of injecting beauty in everything we do.   During the interview, she told me about her experience in Nashville - comparing it to Narnia when she landed! It was completely covered in snow! Susan is a fantastic conversationalist and I had a great time talking with this Aussie lady! Go check her out. On this episode: Susan takes us back to her arrival in Narnia (aka Nashville during a snow storm) There's something about islands that put music into people! That's what Susan Muranty believes. She discusses the story behind her songs and how she has a knack for beautiful lyrics - you can feel the love in her songs! Blue makes everything more beautiful! Don't you agree? Susan and I think so! Hey! I might have proposed to Susan, and she agreed to buy a dress if I get her ethically sourced diamonds! What! Of course, Susan talks about her influences, what helped her to become the poetic wonder she is today. Episode 106 - Reviews of Skandalon, Meteor Men, and Punks: The Comic #1

This week on the podcast, Derek and Andy discuss three new titles that range from the profound to the insane. They begin with the new book from Julie Maroh, Skandalon (Arsenal Pulp Press). It's the story of a French rock star, Tazane, with international appeal and the power to move a vast legion of fans. The book is thesis driven, with Maroh exploring the dynamics, and the costs, of modern celebrity status and its affects on both the personal and collective psyche. Neither of the guys have yet read Maroh's first graphic novel — and the one for which she's best known — Blue Is the Warmest Color, but after digesting Skandalon they feel that their appreciation of the work may be enhanced, or at least contextualized, by the earlier book. Next, the Two Guys with PhDs move on the new work from Jeff Parker and Sandy Jarrell, Meteor Men (Oni Press). While at first they were skeptical of the potential formulaic nature of the narrative — aliens coming to Earth and the resulting aftermath — they're fascinated by the ways in which Parker complicates conventions to make the story unique. They're particularly struck by the book's teenage protagonist, Alden, the complexities of his character, and the circumstances surrounding his link to the extraterrestrials. While the guys disagree as to extents of Parker and Jarrell's deviation from the genre — Andy feels that the governmental/military response to the aliens is nuanced, while Derek thinks that it's more predictable and even heavy-handed — they both conclude that Meteor Men presents a different perspective on a popular formula. This is no E.T. Finally, the guys wrap up with what both feel is the highlight of the week, the first issue of Joshua Hale Fialkov and Kody Chamberlain's Punks: The Comic (Image Comics). This has to be one of the most whacked out comics they're read in a long time, rivaling the craziness and no-holds-barred fun of Ryan Browne's God Hates Astronauts and Evan Dorkin's Milk and Cheese. In this first issue of the new ongoing series, we get two short stories — the funniest being the lead off, “Firsts” — a portion of an earlier, self-published Punks comic, and a three-page fun-and-activities section, complete with a card game called Nutpuncher. Andy and Derek laugh their way through the final part of the podcast, and they eagerly look forward to following the future exploits of Dog, Skull, Fist, and Abraham Lincoln. Also, the Two Guys welcome a new Podcast Patron, Tom Mathews, who believes The Comics Alternative does for comics what Sound Opinions does for music. You can't get much better praise than that!
